Between the Temple and the Market Place - Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist Part Three - #59 Stories From The Earth Podcast
Today we are continuing a chat review of “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth. This book has a lot of discussion worthy subject matter, so we will be covering it over the course of a couple episodes. Today is part THREE. If you have not listened to part one OR part two please do so before listening to this episode.

Link to part two:

Brief summary of what the book is about this book:
Paul Kingsnorth was once an activist―an ardent environmentalist. He fought against rampant development and the depredations of a corporate world that seemed hell-bent on ignoring a looming climate crisis in its relentless pursuit of profit. But as the environmental movement began to focus on “sustainability” rather than the defense of wild places for their own sake, and as global conditions worsened, he grew disenchanted with the movement that he once embraced. He gave up what he saw as the false hope that residents of the First World would ever make the kind of sacrifices that might avert the severe consequences of climate change.
This iconoclastic, fearless, and ultimately hopeful book, which includes the much-discussed “Uncivilization” manifesto, asks hard questions about how we’ve lived and how we should live.

🌼Why Stories From the Earth? Humankind’s relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography. There are many ways that we can engage with our living planet, be it through herbalism, gardening, hiking and other explorations, meditation and observation, and even artistic expressions. There are many ways for us to connect, and it is important to do so, as the human species is not a separate entity from the whole web of life. Each takes their own path. This series explores some of the many ways in which people may weave a tapestry of meaning in coexistence and mutuality with what surrounds us, these are Stories From the Earth. 🍄Follow us on Instagram

#47 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Book Chat - “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth - Part Two
Today we are continuing a chat review of “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth. This book has a lot of discussion worthy subject matter, so we will be covering it over the course of a couple episodes. Today is part two. If you have not listened to part one please do so before listening to this episode. Link to part one: https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/PYd3NXHATwb

#46 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Book Chat - “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth - Part One
Today we are starting a chat review of “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth. This book has a lot of discussion worthy subject matter, so we will be covering it over the course of a couple episodes. Today is part one.
Brief summary of what the book is about this book:

But as the environmental movement began to focus on “sustainability” rather than the defense of wild places for their own sake, and as global conditions worsened, he grew disenchanted with the movement that he once embraced. He gave up what he saw as the false hope that residents of the First World would ever make the kind of sacrifices that might avert the severe consequences of climate change.
Full of grief and fury as well as passionate, lyrical evocations of nature and the wild, Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist gathers the wave-making essays that have charted the change in Kingsnorth’s thinking. In them he articulates a new vision that he calls “dark ecology,” which stands firmly in opposition to the belief that technology can save us, and he argues for a renewed balance between the human and nonhuman worlds.
This iconoclastic, fearless, and ultimately hopeful book, which includes the much-discussed “Uncivilization” manifesto, asks hard questions about how we’ve lived and how we should live.

#45 Stories From The Earth Podcast - The Forest Unseen - A book Chat - The Wet Chemical Core of Ourselves
Join Ellen and Jennifer and making her debut as their 3rd co host is tiny human Kaeda! You have been warned now that there will be some cute baby noises in this episode! They will be chatting all about the book: The Forest Unseen by David George Haskell
⭐Why Stories From the Earth? Humankind’s relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography. There are many ways that we can engage with our living planet, be it through herbalism, gardening, hiking and other explorations, meditation and observation, and even artistic expressions. There are many ways for us to connect, and it is important to do so, as the human species is not a separate entity from the whole web of life. Each takes their own path. This series explores some of the many ways in which people may weave a tapestry of meaning in coexistence and mutuality with what surrounds us, these are Stories From the Earth.
⭐From the cover: Visiting a one square meter patch of old growth Tennessee forest almost daily for 1 year, biologist David Haskell traces nature's oath through the seasons and brings the forest and it's inhabitants to vivid life. Beginning with simple observations - a salamander scuttling across the leaf litter; the first blossom of spring wildflowers - Haskell spins a brilliant web of biology, ecology, and poetry. He explains the science that binds together the tiniest microbes in the largest mammals, and describes the ecosystems that have cycled for thousands - sometimes millions - of years. Written with remarkable grace and empathy, The Forest Unseen is a grand tour of nature and all its beauty and complexity.

Humans in Space - #35 Stories From The Earth Podcast - A Book Chat - Biophilia by Edward O. Wilson
Today Ellen and Jennifer are going to be doing a book review episode of Biophilia by Edward O. Wilson. Ellen learned of this book from Her sister, who’s a biologist and works in conservation. She knows Ellen has always had a fascination with Ants, and E.O. Wilson here’s specialty was entomology, particularly with regards to the study of ants. But this book is not his main “Ant” book, this book is considered his “most personal” work, reflecting on what he feels to be the important and intrinsic connection humans have to the natural world, and why it is important we realize such. Jennifer had not heard of this book before reading it for this episode. She is just ok on the subject of ants but she is very interested in how to unweave rainbows.

⭐Why Stories From the Earth? Mankind’s relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography.

#28 Stories From The Earth Podcast - A Book Chat - Black Elk Speaks
⭐In honor of Indigenous People’s Day on October 11th, Ellen and Jennifer are going to be delving into the book “Black Elk Speaks” by John G. Niehardt
Why this book?
Ellen: I think this book would have aptly made it into our review of an episode sooner or later, because I think it very much fits our theme of talking about and exploring various ways mankind is connected to nature and the earth. In the particular context of this book it could be said, and seen to be, as coming from a particularly spiritually influenced angle. But then I’d like to pose the question ‘where does spirituality and science of reality meet, if not but in nature, and the human drive to reconcile ourselves within it?’ It seems that Indigenous peoples the world over, or anyone embracing a more animistic purview, are more adept at understanding and balancing along this line; and that a book like Black Elk Speaks, if it is even a fraction true to Black Elk’s own word and vision, thus becomes an insightful gift or gentle guide to appeal to the connection of all life.
Jennifer: Simply because I have never read anything like this book before and I was extremely interested in hearing Black Elk’s story. I feel that many Indigenous people have a way of looking at the world that we have lost. Maybe by learning about indigenous people we can re- learn some of what we as non native people have lost and this will help us change the way in which we have been living. At the very least we need to find a less destructive way to live on this planet so that we can survive. Black Elk is a man who has essentially been through the end of the world and I think there is a lot we can learn from him in this time of change.

#27 Stories From The Earth Podcast - A Book Chat - The One Straw Revolution
Join Ellen and Jennifer as they chat about the natural farming book - The One Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka.
Ellen: "had heard about and stumbled across this book numerous times 10, 15, 20 years ago and just never got around to reading it. I’m not even sure what finally prompted me to pick it up so many years later in the thick of educating myself about permaculture and other resilient farming methods, but let me tell you, when I finally read it I kind of felt like kicking myself for getting to it so late! Because I honestly believe had I read it all those years ago it could have helped propel and inform me in so many ways that I longed for back then and couldn’t conceptualize."

#20 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Interview with the band Holy River
Ellen and Jennifer chat with Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price of the band Holy River!!
About Holy River:
"Høly River is founded by multi-instrumentalists Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price. Fusing together the pulse of drone pop, worldly instrumentation, this experimental music would best be described as a landscape, as a biome all its own. This musical phenomenon has come to be known as, Earth folk, a type of music inspired thematically by the natural environment: flora, fauna, soil, stars, and the human experience. From harmonium engulfed melodies to mouth-harp stomp grass, Høly River taps into an embodied and innate celebration of internal and external worlds, attempting to bring them closer together with each beat. On record or in-person, a listener is entranced in the soaring vocal ballads bathed the in moonlight of dance beats and folk-inspired roots. The music of Høly River carries the message of humanity’s need for reconnection with itself and the earth. Mystically political and wholeheartedly grassroots this DIY band finds themselves playing on large festival stages as well as backyard fire pits of intentional communities around the world." - Holy River YouTube Channel
