Stories From The Earth

Stories From The Earth

By Jennifer Braverman and Ellen Selm

Humankind's relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography. There are many ways that we can engage with our living planet, be it through herbalism, gardening, hiking and other explorations, meditation and observation, and even artistic expressions. This series explores some of the many ways in which people may weave a tapestry of meaning in coexistence and mutuality with what surrounds us, these are Stories From the Earth.

Between the Temple and the Market Place - Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist Part Three - #59 Stories From The Earth Podcast

Today we are continuing a chat review of “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth. This book has a lot of discussion worthy subject matter, so we will be covering it over the course of a couple episodes. Today is part THREE.  If you have not listened to part one OR part two please do so before listening to this episode.

Brief summary of what the book is about this book:

Paul Kingsnorth was once an activist―an ardent environmentalist. He fought against rampant development and the depredations of a corporate world that seemed hell-bent on ignoring a looming climate crisis in its relentless pursuit of profit. But as the environmental movement began to focus on “sustainability” rather than the defense of wild places for their own sake, and as global conditions worsened, he grew disenchanted with the movement that he once embraced. He gave up what he saw as the false hope that residents of the First World would ever make the kind of sacrifices that might avert the severe consequences of climate change.

This iconoclastic, fearless, and ultimately hopeful book, which includes the much-discussed “Uncivilization” manifesto, asks hard questions about how we’ve lived and how we should live.

#47 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Book Chat - “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth - Part Two

#47 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Book Chat - “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth - Part Two

Today we are continuing a chat review of “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth. This book has a lot of discussion worthy subject matter, so we will be covering it over the course of a couple episodes. Today is part two.  If you have not listened to part one please do so before listening to this episode.  Link to part one: https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/PYd3NXHATwb

Why Stories From the Earth?  Humankind’s relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography. There are many ways that we can engage with our living planet, be it through herbalism, gardening, hiking and other explorations, meditation and observation, and even artistic expressions. There are many ways for us to connect, and it is important to do so, as the human species is not a separate entity from the whole web of life. Each takes their own path. This series explores some of the many ways in which people may weave a tapestry of meaning in coexistence and mutuality with what surrounds us, these are Stories From the Earth.

#46 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Book Chat - “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth - Part One

#46 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Book Chat - “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth - Part One

Today we are starting a chat review of “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth. This book has a lot of discussion worthy subject matter, so we will be covering it over the course of a couple episodes. Today is part one.

Full of grief and fury as well as passionate, lyrical evocations of nature and the wild, Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist gathers the wave-making essays that have charted the change in Kingsnorth’s thinking. In them he articulates a new vision that he calls “dark ecology,” which stands firmly in opposition to the belief that technology can save us, and he argues for a renewed balance between the human and nonhuman worlds.

This iconoclastic, fearless, and ultimately hopeful book, which includes the much-discussed “Uncivilization” manifesto, asks hard questions about how we’ve lived and how we should live.

#45 Stories From The Earth Podcast - The Forest Unseen - A book Chat - The Wet Chemical Core of Ourselves

#45 Stories From The Earth Podcast - The Forest Unseen - A book Chat - The Wet Chemical Core of Ourselves

Join Ellen and Jennifer and making her debut as their 3rd co host is  tiny human Kaeda!  You have been warned now that there will be some cute baby noises in this episode!  They will be chatting all about the book:  The Forest Unseen by  David George Haskell

⭐Why Stories From the Earth?  Humankind’s relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography. There are many ways that we can engage with our living planet, be it through herbalism, gardening, hiking and other explorations, meditation and observation, and even artistic expressions. There are many ways for us to connect, and it is important to do so, as the human species is not a separate entity from the whole web of life. Each takes their own path. This series explores some of the many ways in which people may weave a tapestry of meaning in coexistence and mutuality with what surrounds us, these are Stories From the Earth.

⭐From the cover: Visiting a one square meter patch of old growth Tennessee forest almost daily for 1 year, biologist David Haskell traces nature's oath through the seasons and brings the forest and it's inhabitants to vivid life. Beginning with simple observations - a salamander scuttling across the leaf litter; the first blossom of spring wildflowers - Haskell spins a brilliant web of biology, ecology, and poetry. He explains the science that binds together the tiniest microbes in the largest mammals, and describes the ecosystems that have cycled for thousands -  sometimes millions - of years. Written with remarkable grace and empathy, The Forest Unseen is a grand tour of nature and all its beauty and complexity.

Today we’re thrilled to talk with local storyteller, naturalist and herbalist Doug Elliott. He’s the author of several books, including “Wild Roots: A Forager’s Guide to the Wild Edible and Medicinal Roots, Tubers, Corms, & Rhizomes” and also has produced a CD titled “Crawdads, Doodlebugs and Creasy Greens: Songs, Stories and Lore Celebrating the Natural World”. Doug has lectured and performed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and conducted workshops for the Smithsonian Institution. He has led ranger training sessions for the National Park Service and guided people on wilderness experiences from down-east Maine to the Florida Everglades. Humans in Space - #35 Stories From The Earth Podcast - A Book Chat - Biophilia by Edward O. Wilson

Humans in Space - #35 Stories From The Earth Podcast - A Book Chat - Biophilia by Edward O. Wilson

Today Ellen and Jennifer are going to be doing a book review episode of Biophilia by Edward O. Wilson. Ellen learned of this book from Her sister, who’s a biologist and works in conservation. She knows Ellen has always had a fascination with Ants, and E.O. Wilson here’s specialty was entomology, particularly with regards to the study of ants. But this book is not his main “Ant” book, this book is considered his “most personal” work, reflecting on what he feels to be the important and intrinsic connection humans have to the natural world, and why it is important we realize such.  Jennifer had not heard of this book before reading it for this episode. She is just ok on the subject of ants but she is very interested in how to unweave rainbows.

⭐Why Stories From the Earth?  Mankind’s relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography.

#28 Stories From The Earth Podcast - A Book Chat - Black Elk Speaks

#28 Stories From The Earth Podcast - A Book Chat - Black Elk Speaks

⭐In honor of Indigenous People’s Day on October 11th, Ellen and Jennifer are going to be delving into the book “Black Elk Speaks” by John G. Niehardt

Why this book?

Ellen:  I think this book would have aptly made it into our review of an episode sooner or later, because I think it very much fits our theme of talking about and exploring various ways mankind is connected to nature and the earth. In the particular context of this book it could be said, and seen to be, as coming from a particularly spiritually influenced angle. But then I’d like to pose the question ‘where does spirituality and science of reality meet, if not but in nature, and the human drive to reconcile ourselves within it?’ It seems that Indigenous peoples the world over, or anyone embracing a more animistic purview, are more adept at understanding and balancing along this line; and that a book like Black Elk Speaks, if it is even a fraction true to Black Elk’s own word and vision, thus becomes an insightful gift or gentle guide to appeal to the connection of all life.

Jennifer: Simply because I have never read anything like this book before and I was extremely interested in hearing Black Elk’s story. I feel that many Indigenous people have a way of looking at the world that we have lost. Maybe by learning about indigenous people we can re- learn some of what we as non native people have lost and this will help us change the way in which we have been living.  At the very least we need to find a less destructive way to live on this planet so that we can survive. Black Elk is a man who has essentially been through the end of the world and I think there is a lot we can learn from him in this time of change.

#27 Stories From The Earth Podcast - A Book Chat - The One Straw Revolution

Join Ellen and Jennifer as they chat about  the  natural farming book - The One Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka.

Ellen: "had heard about and stumbled across this book numerous times 10, 15, 20 years ago and just never got around to reading it. I’m not even sure what finally prompted me to pick it up so many years later in the thick of educating myself about permaculture and other resilient farming methods, but let me tell you, when I finally read it I kind of felt like kicking myself for getting to it so late! Because I honestly believe had I read it all those years ago it could have helped propel and inform me in so many ways that I longed for back then and couldn’t conceptualize."

#26 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Interview with Jeannie Dunn, Director of Red Moon Herbs in Asheville North Carolina

Today Jennifer and Ellen are going to be talking with Jeannie Dunn, Director of Red Moon Herbs in Asheville North Carolina

As a professional herbalist and North Carolina native, Jeannie has been wildcrafting and making herbal extracts, oils, and salves for over a 15 years. Today, knowing the powerful healing properties of those 'weeds' she used to pull, Jeannie happily uses them in her fermentations, herbal extracts, and fun, medicinal elixirs.

🌿Western Herbalists who have inspired Jeannie: Robin Rose Bennett, Patricia K. Howell, Rosemary Gladstar, Rober Rogers, Ryan Drum, Phyllis D. Light, Richo Cech, Teresa Boardwine.

🌼Why Stories From the Earth?  Mankind’s relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography.

#23 Stories From The Earth Podcast - The Importance of Story in Herbalism - Interview with Herbalist Deanna Rose

In this episode Ellen and Jennifer are going to continue talking about one of the ideas that they spoke about last week when they were chatting about the book “A Weedwifes Remedy” (Episode 22) which is the role that stories play in herbalism, with special guest, local herbalist Deanna Rose.

🍄About Deanna Rose

Deanna was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, where she took singing lessons on world-renowned Music Row. She loves singing folk, country, gospel, jazz, blues, and more! Deanna now lives in the mountains of North Carolina, but visits Nashville often to see family.

Deanna Rose is a graduate of Warren Wilson College, where she earned a BA in Gender and Women’s Studies. While attending WWC, Deanna participated in the folk choir and college chorale for 4 years. She also participated in the Vagina Monologues for three years and one year she co-directed it with Sally Obremski. Warren Wilson college is a work college so for three years she worked on the herb crew 15 hours a week. While on the herb crew she made teas, tinctures, grew the herbs in a garden and helped get remedies to sick students. Deanna Rose was also trained by Our Voice and WWC Rise crew to be a Rape Crisis advocate.

Deanna Rose is currently a professional teacher, singer, community organizer and holistic herbalist, certified by the Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine.  She ran a community center out of her former home for 2 years where there were classes, concerts, kids camps and more!

Through song, nature and ceremony, Deanna Rose aims to bring community together.

She enjoys performing sound therapy, leading song circles, and fostering connection with everyone including LGBTQ, BIPOC,  and all ages.

#20 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Interview with the band Holy River

#20 Stories From The Earth Podcast - Interview with the band Holy River

Ellen and Jennifer  chat with Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price of the band Holy River!!

About Holy River:

"Høly River is founded by multi-instrumentalists Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price. Fusing together the pulse of drone pop, worldly instrumentation, this experimental music would best be described as a landscape, as a biome all its own. This musical phenomenon has come to be known as, Earth folk, a type of music inspired thematically by the natural environment: flora, fauna, soil, stars, and the human experience. From harmonium engulfed melodies to mouth-harp stomp grass, Høly River taps into an embodied and innate celebration of internal and external worlds, attempting to bring them closer together with each beat. On record or in-person, a listener is entranced in the soaring vocal ballads bathed the in moonlight of dance beats and folk-inspired roots. The music of Høly River carries the message of humanity’s need for reconnection with itself and the earth. Mystically political and wholeheartedly grassroots this DIY band finds themselves playing on large festival stages as well as backyard fire pits of intentional communities around the world."   - Holy River YouTube Channel

💚Why Stories From the Earth?

Mankind’s relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography.
