The London Gin Craze | C.S. Lewis
Welcome into the wardrobe for episode 82! At the back you'll find the Smoke Circle where we have snacks, history and...gin. Laurel first takes you to 18th century London when the greater access to spirits made gin a hot commodity and everyone a hot mess...or worse.
After the break, KT shares the life and creative mind of Clive Staples Lewis, better known as C.S. Lewis. Lewis authored over 30 books, including the popular Chronicles of Narnia series.

The Titanic's Discovery During a Secret Cold War Mission | The History of Heavy Metal Music
Welcome to episode 81! In this episode, Laurel covers the story of the RMS Titanic's sinking and how it remained undiscovered on the ocean floor for the next 73 years until a top secret Cold War mission led to its (almost accidental) discovery in 1985. After we get back on dry land, KT brings us a long awaited topic near and dear to her heart: metal music. From its early foundations and icons to the passing of the torch to new metal sounds, KT covers the history of heavy metal music with a lot of heart.

Tetris's Cold War Origins | Nintendo vs. Sega Console War | Ancient Civilizations and Solar Eclipses
Welcome to season three! We are thrilled to be back with you and thrilled to be back with one of our favorite guests, Dr. Darren R. Reid, history professor at Coventry University in Coventry, England. We previously had Dr. Reid on in episodes 52 and 53 (linked below if you want to hear!) to talk to us about Indigenous representation in popular movies and they quickly became listener favorites.
This time around, he's bringing his passion for pop culture history with the story of the game of Tetris. From its origins behind the Iron Curtain of the Soviet Union to becoming the best selling game in the world.
Next, Laurel presses "start player 2" and picks it up with the console wars between Nintendo and Sega during the 80s and 90s. It was Sonic vs. Mario, David vs. Goliath, underdogs vs. the video game titans, who emerges as the winner?
Finally, Kt brings it to the final level with ancient civilizations and how they handled solar eclipses. What did these great cosmic events mean to ancient peoples? Were they seen as a bad omen? It's a totally different topic altogether because this is Hightailing Through History where two sisters get high and surprise each other with a story from history's vault of the weird and the wonderful!
If you like what you hear, please subscribe/follow, rate and review. It means so much and it helps our show grow!

The True History of Lemuria, a Fake Place with Justin McHenry | Australia's Emu War
It's our season 2 finale so hop in your wicker basket and get ready for some wild intergalactic travel we have guest Justin McHenry in the Smoke Circle to talk about a fake place that has some very real history--Lemuria!
Justin has written the book "Lemuria: A True Story of a Fake Place" which takes the reader from its real origins in 19th century science all the way through its adoption by new age spirituality! Justin also later gives us a Lemuria true crime story that he only briefly touches on in the book so the Smoke Circle gets all the tea on that, lucky us!
But the wild ride doesn't stop there, KT has her own slice of weird history she brings to the episode regarding Australia's war against a mighty foe: standing 6 feet tall with the ability to disembowel a human if things go sideways...the Emu.
We are off for the next six weeks and will be back with you again on April 19th, 2024...just in time for our favorite holiday... *wink!* In the meantime, please keep up with us on Instagram @hightailinghistory or on TikTok @HightailingHistoryPod

Josephine Baker | The War on Disco and Chicago's Disco Demolition Night
Welcome to season 2, episode 7! We're celebrating Black history in the Smoke Circle! First up, Laurel takes us back to roaring 20s Paris to meet Josephine Baker, the Jazz Age star, who was not only a singing and dancing star in the early 20th century, but also was a spy for the French Resistance during WWII and spent her later years as an activist for the Civil Rights Movement in America.
Next, we puff, puff, pass it to KT, who picks history up in the late 1970s, when disco ruled the airwaves...but not everyone was happy about that. Learn about Chicago's Disco Demolition Night and how "the war" against disco wasn't just about upbeat, danceable music...it also showed some ugly truths about the permeation of white supremacy in America.

Ben Franklin's Craven Street Corpses | The Lost State of Franklin | The Boston Tea Party with Bryan Austin of Let's Be Frank
Welcome to episode two of season two!
In this episode we get to realize our dream of being Bill and Ted: plucking a historical figure out of time and sitting down with them to talk history and hear one of their most juicy (and most excellent!) stories!
We are joined in the Smoke Circle by Bryan Austin, first person historical interpreter of Benjamin Franklin as well as other historical people in America's founding. We talk about his experience as a first person interpreter as well as dig into one of the juiciest and potentially scandalous stories from Ben's life--the Craven Street Corpses (did you hear that they found skeletons in the basement of the house Franklin lived in while in London?!)
Afterwards, Laurel talks about the lost state of Franklin, named after ol' Benny Franks, which was almost America's 14th state. We also learn about other potential states that nearly became a part of the union. Kt wraps things up with the history of the Boston Tea Party, celebrating its 250 year anniversary on December 16th, 2023!

Zenobia, the Queen Who Defied the Roman Empire; The History of Spider-Man
Welcome to episode 67! We cover the ancient and the recent in this one! First up, Laurel takes the Smoke Circle back to the Roman Empire's Crisis of the Third Century. Rome was a revolving door of emperors and constant uprisings and civil wars. During this period of time, one regent queen rose up and broke away from Rome, creating her own empire in a meteoric rise...
Next, Kt tells the story of two struggling artists who pitched the idea of a young man bitten by a radioactive spider for a comic hero. Coming so close to not being made at all, Spider Man ended up being one of comics' greatest heroes and it biggest breakout star.

The Eagle and Jaguar Warriors of the Mexica; Syndrome K: The Deadly Disease That Saved Lives
Welcome to episode 66 and boy howdy do we have some interesting history for you! Kt kicks things off with a trip to Mesoamerica to learn about the elite eagle and jaguar warriors of the Mexica (also known as the Aztecs). Armed with fierce weaponry, like the Macuahuitl--a club studded with razor sharp obsidian stone--the warriors were rewarded not on how many enemy kills they could tally...but how many they could capture alive...
Next, Laurel tells of a strange historical event with the backdrop of WWII. Roman doctors were diagnosing patients with a strange disease whose symptoms ended in neurological degeneration and the patient's death. Despite its danger, it somehow saved the lives of those diagnosed with it.

The Dahomey Women Warriors; Mysterious Underground Cities
Welcome to episode 65! During our time in the Smoke Circle today we'll be visiting West Africa to learn more about the Agojie who were the all women army of the Kingdom of Dahomey. This fierce group of fighters were featured in the film The Woman King. T'Challa's royal guard in Black Panther, the Dora Milaje, were also loosely based on these women. After that, we tour other places in the world to explore mysterious underground cities. Some have been turned into beautiful works of art while others have been used for safety and shelter during times of war or nuclear fallout!

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Godmother of Rock n' Roll; The History of the Caribbean and Its Peoples
Welcome to episode 63! In this episode Laurel dives into the life of American musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe, often called the Godmother of Rock n' Roll. She was a direct musical inspiration for many iconic male performers of 1950s rock. Names like Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis all were in awe of Rosetta's powerhouse voice and talent on her Gibson SG guitar. She performed with the Who's Who of Black jazz musicians like Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway at Harlem's Cotton Club and went on to have a four decade-long career! Why, then, have so few people heard of her?
Next, Kt takes us south to learn about the history and the peoples of the many islands that make up what is known as the Caribbean. Learn what happened before Columbus and other European powers came along and celebrate the perseverance, independence and culture of the people there today. As of June 2023, the United States officially recognizes National Caribbean American Heritage Month in the month of June.

Lozen, Osh-Tisch and We'wha: Indigenous Two Spirit Icons; The Mysterious Sword of Goujian
Hey cool kids. Welcome to Episode 62. It this episode, the sisters take a moment to explore what it means to be Midwestern Americans: why do we love ranch dressing so much? Why does it take so long to say good bye and the use of the exclamation "ope!" Kt shocks us all by initiating the bottle, leaf, grinder battle for the first time in our 62 episodes, which was absolutely unprecedented and shocking. Laurel kicks off the history party with talking about Indigenous two spirit people of the North American Great Plains and Southwest. Laurel's portion discusses what the modern term "two spirit" means and a few notable figures in history to which this term would apply. She tells us about Lozen, an Apache warrior and shaman; Osh-Tisch, a baté from the Crow Nation; and We'wha, a talented artisan and cultural ambassador for the Zuni tribe. Next, Kt takes us through the history of the mysterious Sword of Goujian, which was buried in an underwater tomb for over 2,000 but showed no signs of tarnish upon its discovery, looking just as fresh as if it were made the day before

Alice Diamond and the Forty Elephants Gang; Duke Kahanamoku, the Man Who Brought Surfing to the World
Did you know that London had an all-women gang for at least 80 years through the 19th and 20th centuries (perhaps even for 175 years!) Neither did we! Their story seems to be a footnote in history but these gals were fierce and one of London's most feared gangs. Laurel introduces us to the gang, their potentially long history as well as their glamorous queens who led the group with military precision and an iron fist. Next, Kt takes us to Hawaii to meet the amazing man who brought surfing to the world, Duke Kahanamoku. He was a world record swimmer, surfer and Olympian and is an enduring example of aloha to the world.

The Bone Wars; The History of Wayfinding
Welcome to episode 60! Get ready for some adventurous history. Laurel kicks things off with one of history's biggest, ugliest scientific feuds. At the center of it are two paleontologists--Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles (O.C.) Marsh. Once friends turned bitter rivals, their race to be at the forefront of their field led to decades of mud-slinging and personal and professional ruin but left us with a wealth of knowledge in paleontology!
Next, Kt takes us through the history of wayfinding, a thousands of years old tradition of navigation that allowed Pacific Islanders to travel the vast expanse of the treacherous Pacific Ocean using the sun, stars, waves, debris and migratory patterns of birds (and more)

The Night Witches; Rani Lakshmi Bai, Queen of Jhansi
Welcome to Episode 57, in which KT and Laurel finish Women's History Month STRONG with two stories about amazing warrior women! First up, KT takes us to the Soviet Union during World War II and introduces us to Colonel Marina Raskova and the 588th Night Bomber Regiment also known as the Night Witches. Next, Laurel takes us back to British India during the mid-1800s to meet Lakshmi Bai, the Rani (or Queen) of Jhansi. Lakshmi Bai's biography takes place within the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 also known as the First War of Independence which made Lakshmi a folk hero for her country.
**Correction!** Laurel also corrects this before starting her half of the episode but she messed up BAD on some pronunciation and is furious with herself about it. Throughout the story, you'll hear her pronounce Jhansi as "YAN-see" when it is actually "JHAN-see." She also mispronounces "Sepoy," saying it as "se-POY" instead of the correct "SEE-poy."

How do you feel about dams? What about chimpanzees? Is concrete your thing? How about scientific women? Well, for episode 56, we have all those things. First, KT recounts the construction of the Hoover Dam, which celebrated an 88th anniversary on March 1, 2023. The dam, which is the largest in the United States, contains enough concrete to build a road from San Francisco to New York City! Next up, Laurel discusses Dr. Jane Goodall, primatologist, anthropologist and the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees! Hear about her 60-plus years of research and her legacy in activism and conservationism. Bonus: hear Laurel attempt the chimpanzee greeting that Dr. Goodall greets her audiences with (it's not great...)

"Stagecoach Mary" Fields; Yasuke, the African Samurai
Welcome to episode 54! We have two stories celebrating Black history for the month of February! First off, we have the rough and gruff, gun-toting, cigar smoking, take no shit Mary Fields, often known to history as "Stagecoach Mary!" She was the United States' first Black woman (and 2nd woman) to run a star route for the postal system. A star route mail carrier used a stagecoach on treacherous and rocky rural roads out west and had to defend against wild animals and bandits all the while. Next, KT takes us back 3 more centuries to feudal Japan to learn about Yasuke, the African man who arrived in Japan with a Jesuit missionary and became the close confidant of Oda Nobunaga, the "Great Unifier" of Japan as well as the first non-Asian samurai!

Mysteries of the Hope Diamond with Arjun Hundal of Deep Into History; Galvarino, the Mapuche Warrior
In this episode, Laurel goes through a centuries-long weaving thread of The Blue diamond, later confirmed to be the Hope Diamond. We get revolution, mystery, intrigue, a jewel heist and...a curse?
Next, KT takes us to South America to meet a folk hero few people have heard of--Galvarino--chieftain and warrior of the Mapuche people in what is known today as Chile. As the Spanish invaded, Galvarino stood up against an empire...and he did it with blades strapped to where his hands should have been...

Crazy Horse, Oglala Lakota warrior; the 1969 Native Occupation of Alcatraz Island
Welcome to episode 49! To round out Native American Heritage Month, we have two more stories on Indigenous history! KT kicks things off with a historical figure that tied into episode 48–Crazy Horse, the Oglala Sioux warrior and leader. Did you know he was born with beautiful curls?! Next up, Laurel fast forwards to 1969 and the 19 month Native occupation of Alcatraz Island as a watershed moment for Indigenous people in North America (also includes a short story on first female chief of the Cherokee Nation, Wilma Mankiller!)

St. Olga of Kyiv, the Saint You Don't Want to Mess With
A saint for a Halloween episode?! I know it might seem backwards, but, let me tell you: this is NOT a saint you want to mess with. Her story is violent with scenes that would be appropriate for a horror movie. St. Olga is the patron saint for the city of Kyiv but I personally like to think of her as the patron saint of "f*ck around and find out." In our tale...people do and they did...
KT is out again and is officially down with Covid. We wish her a speedy recovery!

The Satanic Panic
It's my sister and cohost KT's birthday on the day this comes out (October 14th)! Unfortunately, she's been down HARD with illness this past week and we were unable to get her half of today's episode recorded. Instead we have an hour long episode on the Satanic Panic of the 1980s and 90s. It was a wild time in contemporary history (did it ever really end?) and you may even have your own memories about the moral panic. Settle in, light up your joints OR make yourself a devilishly good cocktail or cuppa tea and hear all about the Satanic Panic

Henrietta Lacks; Lineage and History of the British Royal Family
Welcome to episode 42! Laurel kicks things off with a story about a Black woman named Henrietta Lacks, who passed away from an unbelievably aggressive form of cervical cancer. Her legacy runs deep and wide as the same cells that took her life help science and medicine in life-saving and astonishing ways to this day. Unfortunately, as much as we have all been impacted by her legacy, there has been a decades long injustice that still continues to this day. Next, KT gives a nod to the late Queen Elizabeth II with a story of the lineage and centuries long history of the British Royal Family. Her story also loosely connects with her other story "How the Kingdom of England Began" from episode 34.

Entertainment in Ancient Rome with Aaron Odom of Euripides, Eumenides: A Theatre History Podcast; Wrestling as Sport AND Theater; The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling!
Whew, It's a long episode title! It's nearly as maxed out as the fun we had making it! It's Laurel's birthday weekend and she wanted to throw a little party in the smoke circle and invite some friends over. Aaron Odom from Euripides, Eumenides: A Theatre History Podcast comes by to hang out with the sisters and share some stories about entertainment in Ancient Rome, which was usually violent and bloody (but also free!) Next, the sisters fast forward in time to the birth of modern wrestling as sport, yes, but as entertaining THEATER. KT starts with the history of modern wrestling--from its humble carnival beginnings in late 19th century America to the billion dollar industry roadshow that it is today! KT tags Laurel in for some women's history with the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling in the mid-1980s. Get out your folding chairs folks, slap on some spandex (or a toga!), spark up and strap in for a wild ride in episode 41 of Hightailing Through History with special guest Aaron Odom of Euripides, Eumenides!

The Mystery of the Mary Celeste; The Valiant Ladies of Potosí
Come hang out with your friends in the smoke circle! We have snacks and exciting stories for you! In this episode, KT kicks things off with her favorite kind of history--mystery history--and recounts the tale of the ill-fated Mary Celeste. The ship was found abandoned in the Atlantic Ocean in 1872 and no one was able to figure out the mystery for ages. Is it solved? Hear the theories and the most recent research into this fascinating story and decide if it's.... "mystery solved?"
Next, Laurel dives into the story of Doña Ana Lezama de Urinza and Doña Eustaquia de Sonza, also known as the Valiant Ladies of Potosí. History calles them sword and gun toting lesbian vigilantes who cleaned up the city of Potosí...if they existed. Together, we explore the folk history of these ladies, what parts of their story may or may not be true, and what socio-economic, religious and colonizing influence was had over this story (and others like this!) True or not, it's a damn fun story!

Welcome to episode 39! In this episode we take it back...way back...we stop in Ireland during the Viking invasions and KT takes us through the rule of Olaf Guthfrithson who conquered southern Ireland and later, Northumbria in present day Scotland and northern England. Next, Laurel gives an anthology of dogs throughout history--from their domestication tens of thousands of years ago, hitting all the major eras of recorded history with stories of the origination of certain dog breeds as well as stories of individual dogs who made their mark in history. As we liked to say about it: world history, but make it dogs.

Operation Mincemeat; Ian Fleming and James Bond
Welcome to episode 38, the birthday episode! On July 16th, 2021, we released our first ever episode! In our "podaversary" episode, KT covers the WWII story of Operation Mincemeat, which was a mission to fool Axis power into moving their troops elsewhere with false intelligence. HOW they try to make it happen is a stranger than fiction, "too bananas to work" story you'll have to hear to believe! Afterwards, Laurel plucks a character out of KT's story and recounts the life of author and Naval Intelligence officer Ian Fleming and his creation, James Bond. The novels and movies of James Bond are the most popular spy stories but would you believe they were all based on Fleming himself and his many adventures while in the Royal Naval Intelligence? I know! Join us in the smoke circle, grab a martini (shaken not stirred) and spend some time with your favorite history loving sisters

The Third Wave Social Experiment; Operation: Anthropoid
Welcome to episode 37! In this one, Laurel talks about The Third Wave Social Experiment that was conducted at a Palo Alto, California high school in a 1967 contemporary world history class. Within a very short span of time, the experiment gets out of control--both for the students and the teacher conducting it and it leaves everyone with a bone-chilling outcome...
Next, KT tells the story of Operation: Anthropoid which was the only successful assassination of a high-ranking officer of Nazi High Command: Reinhard Heydrich (and good riddance if we can say so!)
Due to the nature of KT's story, we have included a content warning at the top of the show. There are mentions of suicide, mass murder and the general atrocities that were committed by Heydrich and the rest of the Nazi regime. Listener discretion is advised.

The Lavender Scare; The Legend of Robin Hood
Have you heard about the Lavender Scare? It began in the late 1940s and continued for over 30 years, effected thousands of lives and yet it is one of the least known about events in American history. During McCarthyism and the Red Scare, while Senate subcommittees were going after Communists in a very public way, they were also searching for, finding and purging LGBTQ+ individuals working in the federal government. KT takes part 2 of the episode with the legend of Robin Hood. Was he a real person? Did he really steal from the rich to give to the poor? The sisters also talk about their favorite Robin Hood moments in pop culture. Ooo-da-lally!

After the Man of Steel, Laurel does the history of Pride with some women of steel: Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera and the Stonewall Uprising of 1969!

How the Kingdom of England Began; Anna May Wong
In episode 34, Laurel struggles through the intro and can't remember whose name is whose...so that's a solid start. KT starts things with the story of how the Kingdom of England came about. During Viking invasions through the land, Alfred the Great and his descendants worked to unite the various kingdoms against "The Great Heathen Army."
After spending some time in 8th and 9th century England, we fast forward to the 20th century and meet the first Chinese-American film star, Anna May Wong, who is finally getting some of the recognition she deserves for her trailblazing.

Captain William Kidd; Lt. Col. "Mad Jack" Churchill
Welcome to the inadvertent Adventurers Episode! This week the sisters each chose men with very adventurous spirits for their stories. First, KT starts off with the tale of Captain William Kidd. Next, Laurel follows it up with the story of a bagpipe-playing, broadsword-wielding, longbow-shooting soldier in WWII named "Mad Jack" or "Fighting Jack" Churchill.
