The Sleep Detective podcast: what causes insomnia and how to fix itJul 21, 2023
140. How cortisol sabotages weight loss, your thyroid, and your sleep!
Do you have trouble losing weight even if you restrict calories, eat well and exercise?
Have you ever noticed you’re hungrier and crave unhealthy foods when you don’t get enough sleep? There’s a reason for this and I explain it in this episode!
You’ll also learn:
How sleep deprivation affects your hunger hormones
What cortisol does when you’re sleep deprived
How high cortisol causes poor sleep
How cortisol affects the thyroid which leads to weight loss resistance
I don’t help people specifically with weight loss. But some of my clients have struggled to lose weight and by helping them lower cortisol and sleep better, the weight naturally comes off.
As my client Jaipal said after working with me for two months, "I realized I had dropped 15 lbs of extra weight!"
If you’re sick of not sleeping well and being unhealthy, my team and I can help. In the Complete Sleep Solution program, we address both the body and the mind and how they affect cortisol and sabotage your sleep.
Mineral imbalance, hormones, neurotransmitters and more can also cause insomnia. We look at all of these possibilities to find the root cause of your insomnia.
Find out more about the Complete Sleep Solution program on my website.

139. My worst mistakes with insomnia
When I suddenly couldn’t sleep in late pregnancy, I made a lot of mistakes that made my sleep even worse. I struggled for 2 years before I finally started sleeping better. And then it took me a couple more years to consistently sleep 8+ hours a night.
In this episode, I tell you the mistakes I made so that hopefully you don’t make the same ones! I could have gotten better so much quicker if I knew then what I know now.
The way to sleep better is to find the imbalances in your body that are keeping you awake. This was the missing piece for me for 2 years and it’s likely the missing piece for you, too!
In the Insomnia Insight program, my team and I use 4 functional lab tests to find the imbalances in your body that are keeping you awake.
The tests look at gut health, liver function, hormone balance, cortisol, heavy metals, minerals, neurotransmitters and more to find exactly what’s causing your insomnia.
No more feeling out of control and helpless because you don’t know why you can’t sleep!
Then we give you a holistic plan (diet, lifestyle, and supplements) to correct those imbalances so that you don’t have to guess at supplements or resort to sleeping pills.
You also get a 30 minute private session with a sleep coach to get any questions answered so you know the steps to take to sleep better soon.

138. How to feel your feelings so they don’t break down your body and sabotage your sleep
Experiencing emotions is part of being human. But we can have trouble feeling emotions, especially ones that society has told us are bad, such as feeling sad or angry.
When you try to ignore or suppress your feelings, they don’t go away. They get stuck in your body and cause unhealthy patterns and cycles that can be hard to break. They can also bottle up and come out when you don’t want them to.
In this episode, I talk about:
Why you want to feel your feelings
How to feel your feelings in only 10 minutes with 4 simple steps
A tool called the 5 minute rule to help move past negative emotions quickly
In the Complete Sleep Solution program, we use functional lab testing to find the imbalances in your body that are sabotaging your sleep.
And, as you can see from this episode, we also help with mental stress so it doesn’t keep you awake.
It’s a body and mind approach that will make sure you get 7+ hours of uninterrupted sleep in 6 months or less.
You don’t have to see a therapist for the mental part and a health practitioner for the physical part. You can get support for both in the Complete Sleep Solution program from a coach who understands what it’s like to not be able to sleep.

137. Brad’s journey to 7+ hours of uninterrupted sleep
After my client Brad got sick in 2022, with what he thinks was COVID, insomnia started. Some nights he only slept 1-2 hours! But now he’s able to fall asleep pretty quickly and get about 7 hours of deep sleep.
Brad said: “I feel like I got my life back. Maybe this will get me another 30 or 40 years beyond what I was already going to get!”
In this episode, you’ll learn:
What Brad tried to get a good night’s rest (before he worked with us)
Why he signed up for the Complete Sleep Solution program
The results of his functional lab tests
Changes he made that helped him sleep well again and improve his digestion
Brad’s story is inspiring and filled with practical advice that you can use to fix your insomnia too.

Especially if you have these symptoms:
fatigue, especially when you wake up, with “crashes” throughout the day
poor stress response and mood regulation
“brain fog”
increased energy levels in the evenings
cravings for salty and sweet foods
overuse of caffeine and other stimulants

Why adrenal fatigue is a misnomer
What’s really going on in your body that’s causing your symptoms
How to “fix” your cortisol so you can sleep 7+ hours uninterrupted a night
My client Rachel’s sleep journey
Because both mental and physical stressors affect the body, in the Complete Sleep Solution program my team and I help our clients address both so they can restore their health and sleep like a normal person.
We use functional lab testing to get the big picture of what’s going on in your body so we know what to work on.
And we also use cognitive behavioral techniques and life coaching skills to help with your sleep anxiety and stress in general.
The Complete Sleep Solution will help you consistently sleep at least 7 hours a night and wake up feeling rested and full of energy.

135. How your poop shows why you can’t sleep
If you can't sleep 7+ hours a night without interruption, your gut isn't healthy. And doing a stool test such as the GI Map will give a lot of insight into what's causing your insomnia.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- how the GI Map looks at gut health and shows why you can't sleep.
- the 3 top gut issues that impact sleep.
- how an unhealthy gut leads to other imbalances in the body that sabotage sleep.
Emmanuel just started the Insomnia Insight program and he's already sleeping better!
“When I saw I have H Pylori, a lot of things started to make sense. Believe it or not, many functional medicine doctors I visited in the past didn't detect it using the other tests they use. I quickly started reading about what HP does and how it results in decreased absorption, inflammation, etc. It now makes sense why none of the other treatments I tried in the past had any effect. I have been taking the supplements for a week. For the first time in years, I had 3 nights in a week where I slept 7 hours straight. So something right is definitely happening. I learned not to raise my hopes too fast but I feel something is changing in my gut.”

114. How Laurie overcame insomnia after 20 years
Laurie dealt with insomnia for over 20 years. The previous 3 years were the worst, because she was averaging only 17 hours of sleep per week.
Over the years, she tried over-the-counter sleep supplements, prescription medication from her doctor, a weighted blanket, a grounding mat, hypnosis, yoga, meditation, red light therapy, and sleep hygiene protocols - but nothing worked.
Laurie searched for a podcast that would help her with insomnia, and found The Sleep Detective podcast. Soon after finding the podcast, she signed up to work with us in The Complete Sleep Solution program.
The Complete Sleep Solution program uses functional lab tests and assessments to find everything in your body that’s causing insomnia. Then we give you a customized plan to fix what’s happening inside your body, so you get healthier and can sleep normally.
Testing showed exactly what was going on inside Laurie’s body, including several imbalances and dietary issues.
After working together for 6 months and making positive changes in her life, Laurie’s body is now back in balance and she is sleeping well. Now that she’s feeling better, she’s able to sleep in bed with her husband again, and she feels like her entire life is back to normal.
Want to find out what’s causing your insomnia? Book a free consultation. We’ll talk about what’s preventing you from sleeping well, what your ideal sleep situation is, and how The Complete Sleep Solution program will help you fix your insomnia for good.
113. Why you feel like you can’t handle stress!
Your partner tells you that you overreact.
You’re irritable and short-tempered.
You know that spilling milk shouldn’t be a big deal but you can’t help but get upset every time.
I want to tell you that you’re not crazy and this isn’t your fault.
Your body doesn’t have the resources it needs to deal with stress.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
Signs of an unhealthy stress response
What causes cortisol to become depleted
How low cortisol can lead to sleep issues
My client Rachel’s story
How to lower stress so you can sleep normally!
The Complete Sleep Solution program uses functional lab testing to find out what's going on in their body that is out of whack and stressful.
And we also use life coaching and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to help with mental stress.
Other sleep programs or doctors only look at the body OR the mind-no one else looks at both. This is why the Complete Sleep Solution program is so effective.
P.S. If you’re struggling to sleep and you’re stressed out by the small things, I’m here for you. Book a call with me to talk about what’s going on with your sleep and find out exactly how we can help you sleep well so you can stop sweating the small stuff!
112. Waking up at 3am? Julia’s sleep breakthrough session
Julia has been getting 3-5 hours of sleep a night for years now. She feels anxious before bed, complains about her sleep and spends a lot of time lying in bed worrying and not sleeping.
She wakes up at 3am every night. This sucks! I know because this used to happen to me, too.
In this episode, I give Julia 3 things to focus on to help with her sleep. And I tell her what else could be causing her insomnia.
The Most common reason for waking up at 3am is a pathogen in the gut! It could be a parasite (like I had!), or “bad” bacteria or yeast such as candida.
If you wake up every night at about the same time, you could have a parasite, too! Parasites damage the gut and cause lots of inflammation, leading to other imbalances in the body that also affect sleep.
There’s more to sleeping better than just killing a parasite. It also involves restoring gut health, supporting liver detox, balancing hormones and more!
The Complete Sleep Solution program finds all of the imbalances in your body (and mind) that are affecting your sleep and gives you a plan to correct them so you can sleep well and wake up rested with energy every day.

111. Is histamine causing your sleep issues?
Some of my clients have high histamine that is contributing to their sleep issues.
In this episode, you'll learn all about histamine:
-how it affects sleep
-symptoms of high histamine
-what causes excess histamine
-what to do about high histamines
-how anti-histamines make the problem worse
The key is to find out why your histamine levels are high and correct those things.
It's the same with insomnia. There's not just 1 reason you aren't sleeping normally. There are multiple causes.
Just like an old car that isn't running. Let’s say you have an old car that needs a new engine and transmission and battery and alternator! You could fix the engine and your car still won’t run. You have to fix all of them for your car to work.
Same with our bodies. Your sleep issues are a sign that multiple systems in your body aren’t working.
You can’t just look at one, such as hormones for example, and expect to be fixed. Because your gut and liver and your immune system still aren’t working.
You need to fix everything at once and get your entire body back in balance.
This is why what you’ve tried so far hasn’t worked. If you’ve gone gluten free or worked on hormones or liver detox and haven’t fully improved, it doesn’t mean that those things didn’t work or weren’t necessary. It just means that there are also other things out of balance that also need to be corrected.
Sometimes I get asked the question, "If we do everything at once, how do we know what works?"
And the answer is, it all needs to work together. We need to get all the systems in your body working properly again to get back in balance so you can sleep normally.
Just like the old car that needs multiple new parts to run again.
The Complete Sleep Solution program finds what’s out of whack in your body and gives you a simple plan to get back in balance with lots of love and support.

110: Zero health issues for the first time in years-Andrea's story
Andrea came to me with poor sleep but also fatigue, joint pain and anxiety.
She went to her doctor after working together for 6 months and realized she had zero health complaints!
In her own words:
“I have a new found look on life now and I’m very lucky that I don’t have to continue with the joint pain, and the fatigue, and the anxiety, and the INSOMNIA! I feel like a brand new woman!”

109: Does cannabis help or hurt your sleep?
I've had my own experiences with cannabis that make me question if it's actually helpful, or if it could possibly hurt sleep. So I did some research and asked some questions to get to the bottom of this topic. In this episode, you'll find out all about cannabis and sleep, including: -What the research shows -The side effects of cannabis for sleep -The differences between THC and CBD for sleep -How it affects the sleep stages -How it affects neurotransmitters and hormones -My recommendations for whether to use cannabis or not The bottom line is that cannabis is a Band-aid. It's not solving what’s out of balance in your body that’s keeping you from sleeping normally. The way to sleep better naturally and permanently is to find out what's out of whack in your body that's sabotaging your sleep and fix those imbalances. And make sure that your mind isn't keeping from you sleeping. My Complete Sleep Solution program helps you restore your health so you can fall asleep quickly, stay asleep all night, and get the rest you need to have energy, be in a good mood, and enjoy your life! 107: Why stress hormones are high at night (and how to lower them so you can sleep!)
One of the most common causes of insomnia is high cortisol.
Cortisol should be low at night so you can fall asleep easily and stay asleep all night.
But if you can’t sleep, cortisol and other stress hormones are probably high at night.
In this episode, you'll find out:
what hidden health imbalances can make your body release cortisol at night
which tests identify what's causing high cortisol in your body
what genes cause your body to hold onto stress hormones at night
how to know if you have these genes and how to deal with them
The Complete Sleep Solution program helps with high cortisol at night, "dirty" genes, and all the hidden health issues that cause insomnia so you can sleep better naturally and permanently!

106: Mold causing insomnia? Joseph’s sleep breakthrough session
In this Sleep Breakthrough session I chatted with Joseph about his sleep struggles, what he’s tried so far, and the top 3 things that are getting in the way of good sleep for him.
He’s been doing all the “right” things to get better: going to functional medicine doctors; working on gut health, detox and hormones; and eating an anti-inflammatory diet. But his sleep hasn’t improved.
One reason he hasn’t gotten better is that the doctors he’s worked with are looking at one part of his health at a time. They focus on gut health, then liver function, then hormones. It takes a couple of months to work on each thing and meanwhile the other things start out of balance.
Focusing on one thing at a time doesn't usually work because everything in the body is connected. If you just focus on gut health but don’t support detox, then the liver gets even more congested when trying to kill pathogens and you don’t get better.
The fastest and more effective way to sleep normally is to support your body’s health as a whole which involves looking at multiple systems of the body at the same time instead of one at a time.
The second reason why he hasn’t gotten any better is because he’s likely dealing with mold toxicity! I use an assessment looking at 13 symptom clusters to identify possible mold issues. He had 9 out of these 13 and studies show that having at least 8 symptoms means there's a 95% chance that someone has CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) which is commonly caused by mold.
25% of people have a gene which makes it hard to detoxify mold toxins, and they get sick when they’re exposed. I see mold toxicity in about 1/3 of my clients, so it’s definitely more common than you might think!
For more info about mold toxicity and sleep, listen to Episode 37.
Dealing with mold can be tough, especially if your home has it. But it’s necessary to address it so that your body can recover so that you can sleep normally.
If you can’t sleep, there are hidden imbalances in your body that are keeping you awake. My team and I will find out what they are and give you a plan to fix it so you start sleeping better permanently. Schedule a consultation to find out more and get started so you can overcome insomnia and live the life you want to live asap!
105: What triggers insomnia?
My insomnia started in late pregnancy and didn’t go away after my son was born. So I know what triggered my sleep issues.
But not everyone has a known trigger.
Sleep issues can happen gradually and get worse over time.
Or your sleep can ebb and flow and be unpredictable.
In this episode, I explain what can trigger insomnia and how sleep issues happen even if you don’t know what triggers it.
My client Richard has doubled his sleep in the first 2 months working together.
“I am pleased to say that i have gone up fro m 1-2 hours to 3-4. 🤗 This has made a massive difference to my emotional state, and I have just been re-engaging with life the last week! I feel like starting the mold protocol is the factor that has helped.”
Mold toxicity was affecting him but what really triggered his insomnia was mold, working 70-80 hours a week, and his body breaking down over time.

104: Can’t sleep? Both your body and mind are causing your insomnia
Both your mind AND your body contribute to your sleep issues.
Cognitive behavioral therapy helps with the mental part.
Doctors may try to help with the physical part but they usually end up prescribing sleeping pills or anti-anxiety medication which isn’t getting to the root of the problem.
The only way to truly get over your insomnia is to find out what's going on in both your body and your mind and correct all of those things at once.

101: How brain inflammation affects your sleep
If you can't sleep, your brain isn’t healthy.
For a healthy brain, sleep is effortless. A healthy brain remembers things, thinks clearly and is excited about life. When there’s inflammation in your brain, it doesn’t function as it should. And you can't sleep. normally.

-symptoms of inflammation in the brain
