184: Dealing with loved ones addiction, alcohol abuse, and how to be there for them with Mindy Hofman

Quote: “I learned that being honest and vulnerable, like sitting here talking to you like this, is how you can help people; because hopefully someone's listening.” – Mindy Hofmann

    Summary:

Do you know someone who has battled addiction, or alcoholism? Well, today we are braving how to support them, and learn from a certain women’s story how change and transformation is possible after hitting rock bottom.

Mindy Hofmann, community leader and podcast host, and I were introduced by a mutual friend. Obviously, we have so much in common! She has had me in her hot seat, but it wasn’t until I had her in mine that I heard her truly dynamic story. Mindy shares her incredible journey from addiction to recovery, offering insights into the darkest moments of her life, how motherhood impacted both her fall and rise, and the transformation that led her to embrace authenticity and serve others.

In this episode we talk about…

    • The distractions of the glamorous life growing up in Hollywood.

    • The hard truth of hitting rock bottom & coming to terms with addiction to alcohol.

    • The power of healing through creativity, such as the performing arts.

    • The importance of sharing your personal story for yourself and for others.

    Bio:

Mindy Hofman is the founder of Women of Austin and the creator and host of The Women of Austin Podcast. Mindy is also the Vice President of the new Women of Austin Foundation, helping to support women in the community. She is a self-proclaimed women’s rights champion and strongly believes in the transformative power of women supporting women.

Mindy and her family moved to Austin, TX in 2017, where she faced important life decisions involving her going to rehab and getting a divorce. In the divorce, she lost her business and had to start over. While it was the hardest thing she ever did, it was the best thing that ever happened to her.

After some time and soul searching, Mindy realized that she had to follow her heart and find a way to bring women together to share their stories and create community, connection, and collaboration. So, after months of planning and encouragement from her friends, she created Women of Austin and the Women of Austin Podcast.

183: How to navigate cultural identity, redefine resilience & asian upbringing with Krystl Fabela

Quote: “Resilience is not always a glamorous badge of honor."

    Summary:

Hey, loves! Welcome to a special replay episode of The Brave Table, where we're excited to revisit and share an inspiring episode from the Filipinas On The Rise podcast hosted by the incredible Krystl Fabela. Today's replay features empowering stories, insightful conversations on often overlooked topics of generational trauma, specifically within the context of being a child of Filipino immigrants, and a celebration of the strength and resilience of Filipina women.

In this episode, we talk about…

    • Generational trauma and the importance of acknowledging and addressing this within the Filipino diaspora

    • What it truly means to live life on our own terms regardless of cultural background

    • How coming from a bi-racial background has paved my path in terms of life and relationships

    • Resilience as a double-edged sword as a Filipina woman born from immigrant parents

    Bio
Krystl is a Founder, Podcaster, Speaker and Producer with a passion for storytelling, tackling cultural “taboo” topics and for arts-activism for socio-economic justice. She was born in the Philippines and at a young age, immigrated to Canada and eventually to Southern California, identifying as a 1.5th Generation Immigrant. Growing up, she always noticed the lack of Filipino women representation in different industries: from media, to finance, tech, as well as their missing education: on their history, contributions, and their multifaceted narratives. While doing my undergrad at UC San Diego, she became involved in activism after facing a sexual violence and began to fight for policy reform and justice for other survivors. This kicked off her love for advocacy and people’s movements. After college, she followed her curiosity around innovation and tech and moved to San Francisco, leading engineering recruiting for several tech companies. She still noticed a lack of diverse representation, and was inspired to begin a Podcast that spotlighted Filipino who were at the top of their fields, and how they got there. Filipina on the Rise began and more importantly, a global movement of elevating Filipino women around the world.

172: Healing Masculinity, Sexual Liberation, and Family Reconciliation with Tantra from VICE star Shaft Uddin

172: Healing Masculinity, Sexual Liberation, and Family Reconciliation with Tantra from VICE star Shaft Uddin

172: Healing Masculinity, Sexual Liberation, and Family Reconciliation with Tantra from VICE star Shaft Uddin

Quote: “There is so little education around sexual wellness, sexual education. No one really knows how to say no when it comes to... some kind of intimacy; but also, no one really knows how to say yes.” – Shaft Uddin

    Summary:

I met our next guest, Shaft Uddin, at a global event. He had so much "taboo" sacred sexuality knowledge to share during our juicy chat. You see…Shaft is a tantra practitioner and healer. During our conversation, he introduces some eye-opening topics. So, this episode definitely is NSFK (not safe for kids) or NSFW (not safe for work).

We'll touch on everything from sexual healing and liberation to making peace with family and embracing masculinity through appreciation of the feminine. Shaft even explains why understanding and healing our bodies, particularly through sacred sexuality, is so crucial. And, of course, he gets personal and tells ALL about his own journey.

In this episode we talk about…

    • Struggling with his masculinity as a result of a challenging relationship with his father.

    • Reconciliation with his parents and facilitating healing for himself, his father, and the entire family unit.

    • What is sacred sexuality, and how do we reclaim it in our lives and in our relationships.
    • The fundamentals of tantra and how it relates to sexual liberation, pleasure, and healing.

    • The courage and bravery required to break free from societal norms and judgments in pursuit of one's authentic self.

    Bio:

As a young adult, Shaft Uddin’s life was one of hedonism and excess. He went from being the son of a working-class immigrant, to being a super-successful Art Director in advertising, working for some of the biggest brands on the planet: A classic rags-to-riches story.

And yet, Shaft was living a double life fuelled by alcohol and drug addiction. He was the picture of success, but beneath the surface he suffered from repeated broken relationships, depression and self-hatred. It wasn’t until Shaft had several near-death experiences and alienated most of his friends, that he realized things had to change.

Intuitively, Shaft turned to alternative therapies, meditation, plant medicines and tantra. In under two years, he was free of my addictions and had learned the power of self-love. Dedicated to helping people reconnect with their hearts and find deeper connections, productivity in the workplace, and more meaningful relationships, Shaft serves as a trauma release therapist, tantric practitioner, coach, and speaker.
