The Tech Bubble

In the second show of the fourth series, Amaanat and Mr Williamson look inside and outside of SIS to explore the impact of AI. Ms Sharman talks law, accountancy and AI pitfalls when creating personal statements for University applications whilst we also hear from three external guests working in law, accountancy and ethics and the impact AI is having on sectors outside of education.

And welcome back to a new season!

In the season finale we finally talk about....Esports 

This episode we bring in special guest like Mr Oliver, many Bauhinia Students (Cameron Lee, Nathaniel Lam, Shriyans Gadnis & Andrew Luo) and even Jason Prohaska the Digital Tech Coach at the ESF to talk about their perspective on games and the effect is has on us. We get to hear about about the gaming world and the students interest. What are the benefits and drawbacks of these games in our lives and will we finally have a Esports tournament? In the season 3 finale of the Tech bubble, We invite the guest...Mr Williamson?? Taking a step back from his host spot, we are joined by this episodes special hosts: Amaanat Rekhi & Chloe Jazzy Lau. Coming back so soon is the previous host of the tech bubble, ready to start an interesting discussion before she finally departs. Another 'guest' that occasionally pops in is the producer of the tech bubble! (make sure to watch out for her parts)

In this episode, we discuss all things Mr Williamson. Like his thoughts on social media, technology and learning. This episode also includes our second Vox pop seen in the previous ep, where this highlights an interview about a mini esports tournament in school led by four y13's. In this episode of the Tech Bubble, We welcome The Mother's Choice Youth Leadership Council to the podcast. The four heads of the council: Davina Ho, Amaanat Rekhi, Chloe Kong and Skylette Cheung, have come on to the show to introduce their council and to discuss the dangers of social media as it continues to grow in the lives of teenagers. There are links made with sexual consent with internet safety that bring potential risks and dangers, even privacy being violated on social media platforms. They discuss the importance to protect oneself against these online dangers and the social biases in dating (dating apps). Through this episode they hope to help and share their view points to protect oneself online and to be a responsible user. 

Also, this episode shows the beginning of a new segment - Vox pop! A short segment which catches the opinions and perspectives of students in school, with this one on student's opinions on chrome extensions. Watch out for future segments in future episodes!

Lastly we bid farewell to our amazing co-host Chloe Jazzy Lau, who will be sadly leaving the podcast but we wish her the best on her journey after South and the Digital Leadership Council - we hope she will come back for future episodes as a guest and shares her perspective on future discussions.

In our TTB season 2 finale, we delve into the convergence of technology and environmental sustainability, using the results of a DLC school-wide survey that quizzed students about their choice of search engine to underpin our discussion. We harness the diverse perspectives of our guests from the non-profit, policy-making, activism and academia space to tackle topics from the future of environmental policy to the Ecosia/DuckDuckGo vs. Google debate – maybe then, dear listeners, will you finally pivot away from Google, perhaps? Is privacy policy consent an illusion? Should we abandon WhatsApp and pivot to Signal? Is data the new oil? In this long-awaited Internet Safety Week 2021, our SIS-alumni bring a spectrum of perspectives on the hard-hitting topic of data privacy, metadata – or as one of our guests put it, data about data – and the thought-provoking debate of surveillance capitalism. Fear not dear listeners, as with all our episodes, we close with our guests sharing their advice on how we can safeguard our data and mitigate privacy risk.

An exclusive DLC panel, the guests unpack the major technological headlines in 2020. Jessica and Chloe pick up some of the major roles that big tech has played this year, highlighting the issue of misinformation; Ryan briefly discuss fact-checking; Rohan and Paul explore the nuanced implications of social media presented in "The Social Dilemma" documentary on Netflix and Jaron Lanier's "10 Arguments for deleting your social media account right now"; Maxine, Chloe and Mr Williamson discuss some major programs and software that emerged in 2020 that particularly stood out; To conclude, the guest reveal what emerging technologies they are most excited about.

The Tech Review team begins by discussing gender equity in technology and the marked increase in the amount of women in tech; The discussion moves on to the recent Blue Origin launch and its implications on the future of space travel; Janis begins by discussing her differences from working online in comparison to face-to-face along with her life in Hong Kong and the UK; Mrs Chapman and Ruthie then discuss the implementation of the one-on-one laptop system along with other aspects of technology at South Island school such as the transition from Microsoft Office to Google Drive; Janis and Ruthie then discuss the importance of coding in education in education and its importance within our lives, along with an overall discussion about the importance of digital literacy in education; The discussion then moves onto the importance of video essays and other formats of information presentation in school; Finally the discussion concludes with the challenges of women in technology and increasing gender diversity within the technological sector.

Maxine, Paul, and Ryan begin by discussing Elon Musk’s Neuralink and the latest Samsung Galaxy Z fold in the new Tech Review segment. Ms Greer, the CEO of ESF, begins by discussing her career in education and her use of technology along it; The discussion then moves onto tech disasters and mishaps; Ms Greer explains how technology has enhanced learning in classrooms; The guests talk about the usage of Zoom across the pandemic and its benefits but also its pitfalls; Finally, the panel discusses the effectiveness of new technologies and tools used to aid learning.

The three principals begin by discussing the implementation of technology during their time at SIS; Rohan then discusses the advent of iPads within the classroom from both students and teachers alike; the discussion then moves onto the one-to-one laptop scheme started by Mr Wray; the guests talk about how online learning can be used to help the disadvantaged, and discrimination in the implementation of tech; the panel discusses their experiences with online learning and how it’s evolved since the start; finally, the guests discuss technological challenges that were faced at SIS.

Mr Lee starts by announcing the inclusion of Computer Science into the IBDP (from 2023) and IGCSE (from 2021) curricula; The guests then discuss why coding in particular has established its importance; Paul and Will gives a brief update on the situation regarding ESF Computing Conference; Sam and Kristy have a brief debate about the most important coding languages and the ones most accessible to learn; Kristy announces she will be taking over the SIS coding club that Sam started, and the development of the BSD online coding platform, she also gives her opinion on whether there are barriers for girls in coding; to conclude, the guests give advice to Year 8 students who have opportunities to attend coding courses and clubs.
