Don't Go to Church on Sunday*
Hang on . . . Don’t go to church on Sunday?
OK, admittedly it’s a clickbaity title, but hopefully it will help reinforce the overall point of this episode: church is not just something you attend; it’s a family you are part of.
Clearly, the main gathering on Sunday morning should be a non-negotiable for every believer. But simply showing up is insufficient to operate as an integral part of a local church.
In this episode, Jonathan and Christa discuss dangers of simply “showing up” without being vitally connected to the body as a whole.
When an Optimist Marries a Pessimist
They say that opposites attract. For Jonathan and Christa, this is true in terms of how they view life. One tends to see the cup half full; the other sees the cup half empty. In this episode, Jonathan presents his case for optimism, Christa presents her case for her outlook, and they both identify ways in which the other's perspective has helped their marriage.
A PhD Journey: Dissertation, Dollars, and Desperation
In this episode, Jonathan and Christa talk about Jonathan's PhD journey, including how he landed on his dissertation topic, and the challenges of managing time for family, pastoring, and academics.
We answer several questions from listeners, including:
- "How was your schedule changed during this season of your family life?"
- "What kept you going and connected as a family?"
- "What motivated you to keep on?"
- "What would you do differently, if you were to do it over?"
- "What are effective ways to help pay for it?"
- "Can you pay for my degree?"

Why Jonathan Got His PhD
Getting a PhD isn't the usual route to preparing for the pastorate, but several years ago, Jonathan embarked on this academic journey. Actually, it was a team effort, requiring a tremendous amount of commitment and help from Christa and many others. In this episode, Jonathan and Christa talk about why Jonathan decided to pursue a PhD, and the specific course of study he chose.
5 Mindsets Christian Parents Need
Let’s face it. As wonderful as it is to have children, being a parent can be overwhelming. It exposes our flaws and frailties, and often leaves us bewildered and exhausted. Often our problem is not merely a lack of time or technique, but our overall mindset about parenting. In this episode, Jonathan and Christa discuss five Biblically-informed mindsets that help sustain good parenting practices.
How to Ruin Your Marriage (Part 2)
In this episode, we tackle more ways to ruin a marriage, including—
Surround yourself with friends who hate their marriages.
Fail to prepare for life’s changing seasons.
View marriage as a one-time decision instead of a daily one.
Get overly close with others of the opposite sex.
Threaten divorce.
Notice only the flaws in your spouse.
Make fun of your spouse in public.
Make your job everything.
Take everything personally.
Attend church only when it’s convenient.
When Your Pastor Hurts You
When you go to church, you don’t want to be hurt or disappointed—not by anyone, but especially not by a pastor.
But it happens.
Sometimes a pastor disappoints people simply because he is a flawed human who makes honest mistakes.
But other times, the reasons are less innocent. A pastor might foster a church culture in which the congregation’s loyalty is bound to a particular movement, to the church, or even to the pastor himself—instead of to Jesus. He might be controlling, hypercritical, or cowardly. He might engage in behavior that disqualifies himself from serving as a pastor.
In this episode, we cover some of the issues related to the disappointment and pain people can suffer from their pastors, seeking to provide counsel for those who have experienced pastoral hurt.
The Bible has a lot to say about leaders who harm people instead of helping them. “Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” the Lord declares (Jeremiah 23:1). Jesus Christ, in his sacrificial life and death, is the ultimate shepherd who gives his life for his sheep. “Shepherd the flock of God that is among you,” writes the Apostle Peter, “exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2-3).
Obviously, our discussion is not comprehensive, and we only allude to the kinds of abuse—physical and sexual—that is not only harmful but also illegal. In these cases, victims or their advocates should involve law enforcement as a God-given means of bringing justice and protecting the vulnerable.

Did I Miss God's Will?
Some people worry that they have “missed God’s will.” Maybe they made a bad decision seven years ago, and now their life seems out of whack. Is the only solution to travel back in time? Is that how “God’s will” works?
In this episode, Jonathan and Christa discuss what the Bible means when it talks about God’s will, faulty beliefs about it, and how you can find out what God wants you to do with your life.

Reflections on Hearing Jordan Peterson's Lecture
Jonathan and Christa recently attended a Jordan Peterson lecture, part of his "We Who Wrestle with God" tour. In this episode, they talk about who Peterson is, why he's important in our cultural moment, what they appreciate about him, and how to think carefully and critically about the words he shares.
Jonathan reminds Christa that they're discussing Jordan (not Andrew) Peterson (of Wingfeather Saga fame). A small hiccup.
Christa continues to ponder the question of whether attending the late-night event was indeed better than being home and in her pajamas.
Listen below to hear how Jordan Peterson's messages, while drawing upon Biblical concepts and narratives, should be carefully distinguished from the gospel of the Bible.
6 Books We Recently Read and Loved
When it comes to reading books, Jonathan and Christa have a healthy appetite. In this episode, they discuss which ones they have been feasting on and why they find them so nutritious. These books spark conversations that range from racial injustice to time management, from secularism to Pinnochio. You can find links to all six of the books mentioned on our podcast site: https://wecantalkaboutthispodcast.com/6-books-we-read-loved/
How We Met, Broke Up, & Got Married
In honor of Valentine's Day—and really, just because they wanted to—Jonathan and Christa recount the moment they met, the story of how they started dating, why they broke up, and what made them eventually seal the deal with marriage vows. They also have a lot of laughs recounting awkward stories and Jonathan's most embarrassing moment of his life.
They talk about how God led them during confusing times and how God has continued to lead them through their years of marriage.
The reality is that their relationship is all a product of God's grace. He gets the glory for all of it!
What We Do When We're Discouraged
Let's face it: everyone get's discouraged. But what do you do when it comes?
Where Do Babies Come From? Why We Talk With Our Kids About Sex
What do you do when your kids ask you where babies come from? How long can you get away with the stork answer?
In this episode, Jonathan and Christa talk about why they talk with their kids about sex, at what age they started having the conversation, and what language they used. They also talk about why it’s important to have this conversation with your kids instead of letting their friends and society control the narrative about sex.

The Book Christa Reads in Cemeteries
In this episode, Jonathan and Christa discuss one of their favorite books of the Bible—the book of Ecclesiastes. With its strikingly blunt statements about the apparent pointlessness of life "under the sun," Ecclesiastes is the perfect book to read in a cemetery, which is what Christa has done. Jonathan and Christa explain how this book has given them hope through dark times, and why it is worth returning to again and again.
Bible Study: Why & How?
Why study the Bible? And how do you do it? In this episode, Jonathan and Christa talk about how they started studying the Bible and why they continue to do so. What do you do when your time is limited? How did Christa fit in Bible study when she didn't sleep through the night for months on end? Listen for helpful tips and methods that have helped them develop the habit of Bible study over the years.

Body Image
In this episode, Jonathan and Christa delve into the impact of social media and a culture fixated on appearance on our body image and overall well-being. They explore these trends and contrast them with the perspective on the human body found in the Bible.
Paradoxically, our culture's preoccupation with physical appearance diminishes the true value of the body. The Bible, by contrast, teaches us that our bodies are gifts from God, and as such, our bodies are inherently good.
Despite our bodies' flaws and shortcomings, we can thank God for the bodies he has given both to us and others.
