It's a little vocabulary lesson today! In this episode I talk about some important VIP terms to know that will help you talk more intelligently with people in interviews and people you network with when you're trying to make your next event career move.

We discuss in more detail:

1. Rider: A document that VIPs send relating to the requirements of their performance or appearance
2. Entourage: The group of people who travel with a VIP
3. Photography pen: The area where photographers wait for celebrity appearances and photos
4. Press line: The line of press outlets that celebrities speak to before entering a venue
5. Face book/ Face sheet / Tip sheet: A document with photos, spelling and pronunciation of VIP names
6. Protocol: The official procedure of system of rules governing affairs of state or diplomatic occasions
7. Protocol Officer: The professionally trained person who works with the event to determine the flow according to protocol

VIPs are multi-faceted and not one size fits all. If you work around VIPs or have VIPs at your events, you should be thinking in advance what VIPs need and want at an event and their common behaviours, habits and issues. This kind of preparation is the first thing you should do when you know you’re going onsite to work face to face with VIPs. It makes their experience better and it makes yours better. Be proactive instead of reactive. Don’t spend all your time fighting fires. Getting into their mindset leads to likeability and trustworthiness so then you get asked back to that event and you start getting referred for more.

Today, I’m talking to the event pros who want to work at iconic events but can’t figure out how to get involved and don’t know where to start. Sometimes the path to these roles aren’t clear and obvious. You can’t figure out if there’s an application with the event organiser or if you should contact an event agency. But sometimes you can make your own path. There are a lot of people out there who want to work at iconic events, many who don’t work in events as a career and do it for fun or extra money. So what do you do? How do you stand out? Here are three unconventional ways to get a job at a VIP event that maybe you have not tried before.

How do you invite a VIP to your event? Are you doing it right, really?  Learn what kinds of VIPs to invite, how to conduct your research, how to invite them, what to pay and offer, who should reach out to the VIPs, and what to do after you reach out.
