82. On the Level: The Murder of Eric Nelams
Eric Nelams was on his way to work one morning in 2003. He walked out of his house and headed toward his car, but the peaceful morning routine was shattered by the sound of gunshots. After Eric’s murder, his family was thrown into a long painful journey of profound loss, while searching for answers. Questions swirled about the motive behind the senseless act, and speculation ran rampant about who could have committed such a heinous crime. Was this a robbery gone wrong? A random act? Or was there a darker secret lurking underneath the surface?
Eric’s mother Annie, his sister Cathy, and nephew Vincent all join Dawn for this special episode.
A $10,000 combined reward is offered by the Governor of Alabama & Central Alabama Crimestoppers for information that leads to the arrest and conviction.

81. Making Noise: The Murder of Lori McConnell
“All my mom could think about while this was happening, was to get his DNA under her nails. Because she thought he was going to kill her that night.”
After years of being terrorized by her abusive boyfriend, 53-year-old Lori McConnell made a plan and left him in June of 2018. She asked her daughter Lora to promise to make some noise if anything ever happened.
Emerson “John” Tohafjian made it clear that if he couldn’t have Lori, nobody would. And on July 10th, 2018, he kept his promise.
Tune in to hear from my special guest, Lora Bennett, who tells her mother’s story.

Replay- Murdered: Kristin O'Connell (Part 1)
In honor of Kristin's birthday, I am re-releasing the first episode in the 9-part series on her case. Thank you for listening.
The entire series on Kristin's case is available here: Kristin O'Connell — Method & Madness Podcast (methodandmadnesspodcast.com)
20-year-old Kristin O’Connell was beautiful, bright, and adored. In the summer of 1985, she was brutally murdered while visiting a friend out of town.
In over 37 years since- her mother has fought for justice while Kristin's murder remains unsolved.
In the first episode of this special mini-series, we’ll explore Kristin’s story and her case. Who was she and what brought her to a rural town, 1000 miles from home? Who were the last people to see her alive, and who would want her dead?
We’re going to attempt to answer some of these questions- while also being respectful that the case is still considered an open investigation.
This is Kristin’s story, told by those who are fighting for her.

75. One More Sleep: Morgan Patten (Part 2)
This is Part 2 of Morgan’s story. Please listen to Episode 74 first.
In Part 2 of Morgan’s story, we hear more from Steve & Renee Patten and from Phil Brandon.
24-year-old Morgan Patten planned to spend Veteran’s Day weekend with her fiance, Phil - a Marine, stationed at Camp Geiger in North Carolina.
Morgan traveled from her home in Massachusetts down to North Carolina on November 8th, 2019. During her journey, she checked in with her parents and with Phil to let them know she was safe. After checking into her hotel, Morgan walked next door to Applebees for dinner.
The next thing her loved ones heard, was that she was killed in a vehicle crash that night, while being transported by 2 strangers.
What happened at the restaurant that night? Many questions remain as to how Morgan Patten ended up in that truck traveling over 80 mph down a dark, country road.
Join Dawn as she sits down with Morgan's parents Steve & Renee Patten and fiance Phil Brandon.

74. One More Sleep: Morgan Patten (Part 1)
24-year-old Morgan Patten had her future planned; she couldn’t wait to marry her fiance, Phil, and continue her education at Roger Williams Law School.
On November 8th, 2019, Morgan traveled from Martha’s Vineyard, MA to Camp Geiger in NC to spend the weekend with Phil.
She arrived at her hotel that evening and walked to the nearby Applebees to grab a bite. Morgan texted her parents and her fiance that night, from her seat near the bar.
When Morgan’s dad received a knock at the door early the next morning, he learned the devastating news; his daughter, his only child - had been killed in a crash the night before.
For the past 4 years, Morgan’s parents and fiance have received few answers about what happened that night. Why did two men have Morgan in their pickup truck? What events led to that truck striking a tree on White Oak River Road in Maysville, NC and flipping over several times?
Join Dawn as she sits down with parents Steve & Renee Patten and fiance Phil Brandon.

Replay: Justice for Katie Palmer
This episode is being re-released ad-free in honor of Katie Palmer and her family.
On Tuesday, April 21st, 2020, 39-year-old John Palmer and his wife, 38-year-old Katie Palmer set out for a morning walk in their rural neighborhood in Denison, Texas. It was a sunny morning with temperatures in the mid-60s. The road they were walking is residential- with homes and a country club- not a road with significant traffic early in the morning. There are no sidewalks and the couple was walking facing the direction of oncoming traffic.
At 7:45 am, as they walked alongside the asphalt road- they were hit from behind- by their neighbor Cory Foster, who was driving a 2019 Ford F250 pickup truck.
John and Katie didn’t even hear the truck coming- they were both injured, Katie, fatally.
Katie passed away from her injuries the next day, just after midnight. John has recovered and has spent every day since, not only grieving the loss of his soulmate; but also waiting for and then fighting for justice.
The man that killed his wife had alcohol in his system, was driving with a fogged-up windshield, on the wrong side of the road, and still walks free.
Thank you to John Palmer for joining me and for fighting for Katie every single day.
Join the fight:

61. Murdered: Kristin O'Connell (Pt 6) Signs
This is the 6th part in a series. Please listen to episodes 56 through 60 first.
Today, we hear from Kyle O’Connell, brother of Kristin.
You’ll hear in Kyle’s own words what a homicide does to a family, particularly an unsolved one because every day without answers is unpredictable. The phone ringing at any time- during dinner, after 9 PM -is this finally it? There are those moments that come sporadically, without notice, when an investigator says they’re close…only for another decade to go by.
This is Kristin’s story, told by those who are fighting for her.
There are memories that time does not erase... Forever does not make loss forgettable, only bearable. -Cassandra Clare

60. Murdered: Kristin O'Connell (Pt 5) "If"
This is the 5th part in a series. Please listen to episodes 56 - 59 first.
Today, we’re talking about more twists and turns in a 37-year-long investigation. Plus, DNA, mishandled evidence, and advocacy.
Correction: The forensic lab that offered to test evidence in 2021 was not a New York-permitted lab. This has been corrected in the audio of this episode. I apologize for the error.
This is Kristin’s story, told by those who are fighting for her.

This is the 3rd part in a series. Please listen to episodes 56 & 57 first.
In part 3 of Kristin’s story: We explore those early days, immediately following Ovid’s brutal murder.

Also- we’ll talk more about theories and possible motives that have been introduced over the years, after careful investigation.

56. Murdered: Kristin O'Connell (Part 1) Kristin's Story

55. Loyalty: Enrique Roman-Martinez
In May 2020, Fort Bragg Paratrooper SPC Enrique Roman-Martinez was reported missing at Cape Lookout on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Days later, his decapitated head washed onto shore.
Many questions about the circumstances surrounding Enrique’s murder have gone unanswered. Why did it take 19 hours for Enrique’s fellow soldiers to make a 911 call? Why was information withheld that could have helped in the investigation? Where was the loyalty that was expected of soldiers when wearing the uniform of the United States Army?
Today, Dawn is joined by a very special guest - Enrique’s sister, Griselda Martinez. Griselda is a warrior in this fight for justice.

A warning that this episode features extremely graphic content.
23-year-old Jyoti Singh had completed her finals and was preparing for an internship to become a doctor of physiotherapy. She told her parents in December of 2012 not to worry; all of their troubles would be over soon. But one night while traveling back from a movie, Jyoti and her friend Awindra were lured onto a private bus by a group of men “looking for some fun”. The brutal violence they endured that night can only be described as pure evil.

Adolfo Jimenez Vega was a 41-year-old man, father, grandfather, and beloved son and brother. He was murdered on April 6, 2022 and since then, his family has received few answers about what happened that evening in California City. There’s been victim-blaming, praise for the alleged murderer, and racial bias. Today, I’m joined by Adolfo’s sister Nancy who is using her voice to fight for justice.

51. Princess Doe Has A Name
She was unknown to those who loved her, for 40 years.
It’s 1982 in Blairstown, NJ - a quaint town with an old-timey feel, its residents were rocked upon the discovery of a murder victim in the local cemetery.
The lead investigator Eric Kranz said “I’ll worry about the murder later on. My main concern is finding out who she is.” He was tired of writing “Jane Doe”, so, she was named “Princess Doe”.
Her autopsy revealed she was between 14 and 18 years old, and she put up a fight. The residents came together, helped fund Princess Doe’s funeral, and had a gravestone made for her. For 40 years, they left flowers and searched for her family, praying they’d learn her name.
And then, in 2022, they finally got answers.
Thank you to Anne, for sharing your story.

Justice for Katie Palmer

47. The Murder of Betsy Faria
42-year-old Betsy Faria was vibrant, positive, and surrounded by a supportive circle of family and friends. In 2011, she was murdered in her own home, allegedly by her friend, Pam Hupp.
In this episode, Dawn sits down with Betsy’s daughter Mariah Day. Mariah is speaking out about an investigation that was misguided from the start, and the irreparable damage it has caused her family.
Although her stepfather Russ Faria was exonerated after being wrongfully convicted for the murder of her mother, Mariah is still facing obstacles. She wants people to know that what you hear or see in the media isn’t always the whole story.
Thank you to Mariah Day for sharing your experience with me. You’re amazing.
