The Be Ruthless Show
By Samantha Ruth
I’m so passionate about making more NOISE about this—regularly, because I believe it’s the only way that we can begin to break the stigmas—by having the conversations!
The Be Ruthless Show is a place where we’ll be having the conversations other people don’t. The conversations other people won’t.
In order to do that, I’m going BIG and BOLD. I’m anxious, I’m proud, and I’ll shout it for the world to hear. The shame game has got to stop, and it starts with US not being ashamed of OURSELVES!
Look out, world. I’m ready to make a lot of NOISE and DISRUPT things.... Ruthlessly

Grief Sucks- But Your Life Doesn't Have To
I think every person I know who has dealt with loss says, “Grief Sucks!” Thinking back to the first year without Jim, the only thing I remember saying is “this sucks!”
It doesn’t adequately describe it - but are there really any words that can? Today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show wrote a book with the same sentiments:
Grief Sucks: But Your Life Doesn’t Have To!
From the scenic countryside of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, author, speaker, and educator Brooke Carlock brings a refreshingly pragmatic and humorous approach to the often somber world of grief support. Her debut book, Grief Sucks: But Your Life Doesn't Have To, is far from a conventional self-help book. It is an unfiltered guide through grief, laced with the kind of candid realism only someone who's faced staggering personal loss can deliver. Beyond the written word, Brooke is a certified grief educator, the host of the"Mourning Coffee" podcast, and the face behind the YouTube channel "Grief Sucks with Brooke Carlock."

SAAM- Sexual Assault Awareness Month
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, it’s an especially taboo topic: sexual assault. April is sexual assault awareness month. Over 50% of women and 33% of men report at least one experience of being sexually assaulted .. and these are just the reported numbers. But what IS sexual assault? Most of my clients didn’t realize an assault had occurred at first. It wasn’t “violent” enough. I get into all of this - and so much more! including how to use this awareness month to make a difference.

The Dog Mystic
Dogs are part of my world. Sassy and Dallas come to my retreats - because animal therapy is a real thing! I’ve used it in an office and now, in nature. Sassy is writing a chapter in Faces of Grief - don’t get me started on the power of animal healing!
Today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show is a genius when it comes to connecting with our dogs. Cherie A Marquez is The Dog Mystic. She is so grateful to be living her dream because she owns her own dog training company. She was a teacher for elementary education and she resigned to pursue her dog training career. Through the trials and tribulations of working for herself, she has prevailed and she has not had to work for anyone else since 2007.She is a published author of Happy Dogs = Happy Homes, Problem Solving Techniques Without Using Treats. Her mission is to keep dogs in their forever home by teaching people how to train their dog without treats and get and keep themselves healthy by drinking clean water..The Dog Mystic instructs dogs of all ages, sizes, and breed, with no breed discrimination. She works on problem solving, commands, and exercises to strengthen your bond with your dog or dogs on the soul level, so they will always be family.

April Equals...
April makes me think about Passover & The NFL Draft. It’s like the beginning of the Seasin after a loong winter. But a lot of people I know are not fans of April. Clients are missing lost loves. Teachers and Principals are heading into Prom & Graduation Season. Which means people in my field are about to get busy - On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I discuss transitions. Emotions during transitions. it's not just ok to have a full range of emotions during major transitions. It’s necessary. Anything else is unhealthy and inauthentic. Issues Trapped in Tissues
What we resist - persists. We have to feel the feelings before we can let them go. Avoiding something just means that it will show up in another way.
There are lots of different ways to describe what today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show calls ‘The Issues Trapped in the Tissues.’
Jason Wendroff-Rawnicki is a Somatic Grief Therapist, certified yoga educator, MA in psychology and döTERRA Essential Oil Gold Leaders, who is passionate about facilitating transformation and committed to empowering individuals and families with simple & effective tools to naturally manage their mental, emotional and physical health.
Entrepreneur & business owner since 2000, and co-founded Shine Yoga Center in New Jersey, Jason draws on over 20 years of experience living a holistic lifestyle - incorporating yoga, meditation, essential oils, healthy eating, conscious communication & authentic relationship to help guide you to a place of greater joy & self awareness so that you can make healthier more fulfilling choices in your life.
He travels nationally & internationally leading classes, workshops, retreats and educating about the way grief is stored in the body. And, how to release it.In June of 1998, he lost his sister Lauren in a car accident. Knowing that he needed more than talk therapy to deal with his grief, Jason turned toward a body centered approach. Yoga, meditation, mindfulness, healthy lifestyle and essential oils became that path towards recovery.
In his Somatic Grief Therapy, Jason believes in physiology first when dealing with grief. The issues are trapped in the tissues. When we change our physical state, we have the energy to do the mental and emotional work needed to bring hope back into our lives.

Two words: I’m Sorry.

Black Balloon Day
Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Americans are more likely to die of an overdose than they are from a car accident or by a gun. Black Balloon Day helps create awareness around the important issue of providing support to those struggling with substance use disorder and their loved ones.
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I discuss addiction. Not many people do - including those who have overcome addiction. The stigmas are real!

Designing Rituals
We live in a world where grieving consists of going to a funeral. Life then returns to normal for everyone - except the people suffering through the loss.
Their lives are forever changed.
Today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show, Elizabeth Barbour, discusses the importance of designing rituals to prevent this dynamic.
Since 2000, Elizabeth has coached thousands of women to find their way back to solid ground when life gets chaotic and overwhelming. Elizabeth intimately understands the twists and turns of life's transitions, having weathered the pain of divorce (twice), the deaths of her parents, emotional struggles surrounding adoption, the indescribable heartache of miscarriage and fertility, complex family relationships, a near-fatal car accident, health setbacks, and cross-country relocations.
Elizabeth guides women through a self-care and ritual process where grief and gratitude can live side by side through her coaching program Solid Ground:
Navigating Transitions When It's All Just Too Much. A firm believer in the power of community, she guides her clients to create connections, so they aren't left to carry the weight of their grief alone. As a life coach and shamanic practitioner, she brings a unique blend of traditional coaching techniques and ancient wisdom to her practice. Elizabeth is the author of two books - Smart Self-Care for Busy Women and Sacred Celebrations: Designing Rituals to Navigate Life's Milestone Transitions.

Where's the Beef?
It’s National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, and on today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I get into not only eating disorders, but disordered eating.
No carbs. All soup. Fasting. Lemons only. I’ve heard it all. This world glamorizes dieting and we’re surrounded by unrealistic images of beauty everywhere. And unlike other diseases - we can’t stop eating. An alcoholic can choose not to go to a bar - but we need food to survive.
I also discuss how to have conversations with someone you’re concerned about, and how NOT to have those conversations.
Here are some eating disorder specific help lines:

Childless, Not By Choice!
Grief is an uncomfortable subject. Avoided. Infertility and miscarriage are among the least discussed types of grief.
It’s just not healthy. Today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show agrees and is doing something about it.
Sarah Jane Smith is an embodiment teacher, grief ritual facilitator and coach who helps fellow childless not by choice women integrate grief, amplify agency and embody possibility.
Using the foundations of embodiment, self-compassion, grief tending and finding belonging she helps women uncover the confidence, spark and clarity that was buried on the way to becoming childless.
She has over 1000 hours of formal Yoga teacher + meditation training and over 4500 hours of experience leading classes, facilitating workshops, retreats and coaching cohorts in person and online.
She is a Health and Life Coach through the Health Coach Institute and has trained in grief tending and grief ritual facilitation with Francis Weller. Sarah Jane offers 1:1, group coaching, and courses online and in-person at embodiedpossibility.com

Tugging at Heartstrings
Grief doesn’t come with a how to book. And what works for one person might not work for someone else.
One thing that’s absolutely universal - if you want support and resources to get through a loss, it’s up to you to find them. It shouldn’t be that way, and people like me are working every day to change this, but unfortunately, it’s the reality.
Today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show made it her job to find any and every tool, resource, and support possible to help her after she lost the love of her life, her fiancé John.
It’s how we connected.
Shawn Dinneen, owner of Heartstrings Journals, my dear friend, and the most unbelievable soul joins us today to share her story of loss and her story of how she’s found her way through this loss.

Things That Matter
I wear Jim’s wedding ring on my necklace. My Papa’s hat is in my office. I have my actual baby pillow ….. on my bed 🤣(Truth!)
It’s not the ring that matters, though. Or the hat. It’s the memories that are attached. The meaning. The stories.
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, we discuss the importance of sharing your stories. To connect. To heal. To grow.
Today’s guest, Martie McNabb, helps people share their stories in the most beautiful ways!
Martie is a legacy artist who creates heirloom visual narratives from her client’s photo, document & memorabilia collections. In other words, she tells stories with other people's stuff. She’s fascinated by the stories that get attached to these Things. Protect Your Energy
I talk all of the time about the block button - literally and figuratively! I’m so intentional about who and what I allow into my universe. Nothing toxic! But not everything has a warning label. People don’t walk around wearing their ingredients for us to see if we’re allergic. If only 🤣 In these situations, it’s up to us to determine whether something (or someone) is healthy or not. But what about us? On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I discuss the not so obvious unhealthy situations - including the ones we put ourselves in. Saying yes because we feel obligated. Staying up that extra hour. Ignoring health concerns. Unhealthy things missing that toxic label! I discuss ways to protect your energy from these less obvious toxins, as well as ways to stay in touch with your intuition! Tune in now:

Better Me Nation
People hear the word trauma and think of something major: war, death, rape. But people are traumatized and tolerating it every single day.
It doesn’t have to be something major. Trauma looks many different ways! On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, we’re discussing workplace trauma, minimized trauma, unresolved trauma.
James Keddington is the owner of Better Me Nation. Better Me Nation is on a mission to help every individual develop healthy habits and lifestyles that empower them to confidently overcome the hard stuff in life, so they can ambitiously focus on being their best selves.
Not knowing he had experienced workplace trauma, James developed poor habits around coping with mental health issues he did not even know he was facing. After several years he eventually burned out in every category of health. After a 20-year career in marketing and business consulting, he needed something new. He stepped out of marketing and began to take care of himself. From a lot of trial and error, and helping his daughter resolve her own medical health issues, James discovered the world of Integrative Health and Nutrition. He went back to school and received an education from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition.
He is now working toward helping people avoid extreme burnout, or rebound faster and better than he did. He helps individuals do this through 1 to 1 health and human performance coaching, and as a Fractional Chief Wellness Officer helping growing businesses develop wellness programs for their employees.
In his personal life James enjoys the outdoors, playing water polo, and cooking. He has been married for 25 years and has 5 children and 2 dogs.

The Truth About Loss.
It’s not easy to put it all out there - and men have been conditioned to leave feelings and emotions to women. Not today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show, thankfully!
Dorian Johnson is a Motivational Speaker, Digital Marketing and Content Creator, Award Winning Author, and Influencer. He is the Co-Author of the Award-winning Memoir titled “The View from Above: One Fathers Memoir of Grief Guided to Grace.” which is the story of the search for his oldest son Bailand, who passed away in a hiking accident back in 2017, along with the memorial hike I took with friends a year to the day of Bailand’s passing.
He recently also published his second book titled “A Day in the Life of Grief- The 10 Most Common Misconceptions of Grief”. He is currently working on a new book titled, “The Truth about Loss”, which is about the secondary losses we feel from our experiences.
Along with sharing his story of grief and loss, he is sharing a simple message of hope and healing. This message is about learning what the different virtues we all have inside ourselves and then knowing that these virtues are what make us who we truly are.
He is a board member of the Global Grief Network over Marketing for the organization and has had the opportunity of sitting on several podcast panels discussing different aspects of grief.
He is about to launch his own podcast called “Unsung Heroes”, along with putting together a podcast called “The Chrysalis Effect” and will be looking for people to share their stories of how they became who they are because of their experiences.
Being an Idaho native, He loves the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He graduated from Utah State University and is a true Aggie at heart. Along with his son who passed away, he has 3 other children (2 daughters and 1 son) as well as 3 grandchildren.

What is a label?
From the beginning, the odds were stacked against Dave. His 15-year old biological mother had already made the difficult decision to put him up for adoption. On January 12, 1966 Dave was born in Phoenix, Arizona as an otherwise physically healthy infant, but where other babies had hips and legs, Dave had two flipper-like appendages extending from his torso.
In 1996, Dave made professional sports history, signing a 3-week minor league contract with the St. Paul Saints. Marty Scott was the Saints manager when Stevens played, “He touched a place in my heart,” Scott said. “He’s limited physically, but it’s not a handicap. I have admiration for what he’s accomplished.” Dave is also one of the few players to ever Pinch Hit for Darryl Strawberry in his professional career, and was a starter at second base for one game with the Saints.
Dave tried out for the Dallas Cowboys, the Cincinnati Reds and the Minnesota Twins. He was invited to the Olympic Baseball West Regional tryouts in 1983, playing in the outfield with former Major League players Barry Bonds and Oddibie McDowell. Dave has worked out with the Tampa Rays and Minnesota Twins in Florida, taking batting and fielding practice, as well as throwing out the first pitch in three games.
Dave has been featured on That’s Incredible (1981) CBS Morning News, The Today Show, Good Morning America, This Week in Baseball, Baseball Tonight, Extra, USA Today, That’s Incredible Reunion (2002) Sports Illustrated, Baseball America, The National Enquirer, Star Magazine, People, ESPN’s SportsCenter and hundreds of other news and sports periodicals.
Dave also appears in three books about his athletic career: Slouching Toward Fargo by Neal Karlan Baseball Graffiti by Ed Howsam, and most recently, America at the Seams by Nathan Rueckert.
In 2017, Dave began working with co-author Karen Holt on his autobiography.

On Tuesday’s We Wear Black
I immediately feel connected to people who have experienced loss. We share a bond we didn’t ask for, and I just feel this connection.
With widows, it’s an even deeper connection. Instantaneous. With today’s guest on The Be Ruthless Show, it’s weird to say that we were both also…. ? excited ?
Certain people have the same passion, this certain fire, about changing things in the grief culture. Kate Mollison is absolutely one of them.
She’s a certified grief coach who uses a unique approach to educate individuals and businesses around the importance of grief. Using her own experience with grief, Kate adds a personal touch to an otherwise isolating and difficult topic, as she has an understanding of the nuanced experiences grief creates. She is the founder and operator of On Tuesdays We Wear Black, a grief resource agency where she is a Grief & Bereavement specialist working with individuals experiencing grief. She focuses on helping people organize all the financial and legal components that happen after a death occurs so that grief can happen in the healthiest way possible. Kate has several years experience as a clinical case manager and as a certified “Playmaker”, she uses a modality that helps people unlock joy and find peace & meaning again after loss by educating clients about grief and creating self awareness to foster visibility and support. She deals with all types of loss, and can support anyone anywhere via zoom, text, or call.
Tune in now, and to connect with Kate, or for more information please reach out by emailing ontuesdayswewearblack@gmail.com

Tis the Season
I haven’t been full of energy - not gonna lie. All of my clients are struggling. In 9 days it will be 6 years since Jim passed away.
Not exactly my favorite time of year.
Old me probably would be judging me. Would be upset with myself for feeling this way. This me just accepts that I feel this way.
I’ve learned to always listen to my body. Period!
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I discuss how you can too. I discuss the clues we get from our bodies. More importantly, I discuss the ways we can talk ourselves out of listening - and the consequences we pay.
I also discuss the upcoming holiday schedule for The Be Ruthless Show. Instead of missing any episodes during the difficult holiday season, I’ll be sharing highlights from Healing Together Through the Holidays on some dates.
You can still get full access to the entire library by registering here;

Conversation Does NOT Equal Conflict
I have clients coming to me regularly feeling hurt. Confused. Under appreciated. Relationships are roller coasters full of complicated emotions that were not always prepared for - or willing to - experience.
Most people focus on what the other person is doing or not doing. Saying or not saying. But what about our personal role in relationships - including our relationship with ourself?!!?
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I discuss the feelings that come up in relationships. All of the complexities. And all of the ways that we tend to focus on the negative. The other person.
I discuss how we can shift that focus and shift the outcome! Quickly. And simply.
Many are struggling through the holidays. Don’t forget that you can still access the Healing Together Through the Holidays library. Sign up here
You can also join Team Ruthless! We meet every Wednesday, Saturday and holiday - so you don’t struggle alone! Reach out for special holiday pricing!

So much has happened in the 48 hours since Healing Together Through the Holidays ended. But that doesn’t change the fact that people are still struggling everywhere, many silently.
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I discuss why Healing Together Through the Holidays took place. This world avoids discussing grief. It’s more than that. This world avoids the people who are grieving!
It’s totally backwards!

Dogs and Men with Michael Overlie
Today's guest on The Be Ruthless Show is also part of the upcoming Healing Together Through the Holidays Summit - live in Fort Collins, Colorado. Virtual everywhere on zoom!
Michael is a Canine-Partnered Men's Guide, Retreat Leader, Energy Healer and Autor. The death of his brother tore him open and a very special dog helped guide him to another way of being. That grief became a gift as he was able to see how he was being in the world and decided to change. He discovered how dogs are here to help us heal deep trauma and now shows other men how to heal their own lives.

As a coach and mentor she provides support, strategies, understanding and compassion for individuals who have experienced devastating loss. Helping them to move through the process of reinventing their life and identity. Whether they are new to the grief club or longstanding members, the results can be transformative. Leading to greater acceptance, healing, empowerment and growth.

Today we have a real and raw conversation about grief, the holidays, healing, and living in this world that avoids all of these conversations.

Everything You Need to Know About Healing Together Through the Holidays
I had an experience today and I’ll have the bruises to show for it. I’m fine. Sassy and Dallas protected me.
But it just reminded me - again! - how much more support the “visible injuries” get. Our invisible emotional injuries get ignored.
Avoided?
No one knows there is a National Grief Awareness Week. But they will after this year. Griefhab presents the first annual Healing Together Through the Holidays.
It’s a 7 day event, live in Colorado, streaming virtually everywhere - with at least 5 speakers/panels a day. Providing you with every resource, support, connection, healing modality you need this holiday season.
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I share alllll the details. Including my ‘stumble’ earlier today. You’ll find out about the pre event. You’ll find out about how to get access.
You’ll find out about the 13 month Griefhab 2024 Awareness Calendar. With ALL the awareness dates.
It’s a must listen to episode. It’s also a must share - please. This is more than an event. It’s. My. Movement! Please help me get somewhere in this world that avoids discussing grief!

Some of you might be thinking, Shut Up Already, Sam!
Get ready - because I’m honestly just getting started. And people are joining me - so I’m about to get louder!
It’s not about me. It’s about the invisible populations. The people who are too afraid to speak up. Or too broken at this moment. Or they’ve been beaten down by people who just don’t get it. Yet.
You will. One day.
Grief is the ONE thing we’ll absolutely all experience. But the world avoids and ignores. So I got tired…. I got beyond sick and tired of waiting for the world to do what needs to be done.
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I’m resharing my 50th birthday announcement from yesterday.
Because it matters. Because you can Be Part of the Change. Because now more than ever Griefhab needs your support.
Announcing the 1st ever 13 Month Griefhab 2024 Awareness Calendar. With artwork designed by kids impacted by loss.

Today is International Stress Awareness Day. Tomorrow is National Stress Awareness Day. During International Stress Awareness Week. Happy November.
Does anyone want to to discuss preventing stress? Or stress relief? How about identifying things that are stressful or triggering?
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I discuss these things. More of the things that we don’t learn in books or in school - but absolutely things we need to be learning about as early as possible.
"The End of Longing" Honoring the Life of MATTHEW LANGFORD PERRY August 19, 1969 - October 28, 2023
FRIENDS is absolutely my favorite TV show. Check my website
But that’s not at all important.
Because Chandler Bing is a character.
And Matthew Perry has done SO much more than act. To quote him, in his book Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Things:
“When I die, I know people will talk about Friends, Friends, Friends. And I'm glad of that, happy l've done some solid work as an actor, as well as given people multiple chances to make fun of my struggles on the world wide web... but when I die, as far as my so-called accomplishments go, it would be nice if Friends were listed far behind the things I did to try to help other people.I know it won't happen, but it would be nice."
- Matthew Langford Perry
(August 19, 1969 - October 28, 2023)
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I discuss those important things he did to help other people.

Heart Of A Lion
Detroit Lions Wide Receiver Marvin Jones Jr. didn’t travel to Baltimore with the team on Sunday, and he announced yesterday that he’s taking a leave of absence for a personal matter.
Thank you for putting your well being first.
It’s difficult enough to do this as a human, let alone as a public figure. An athlete.
And the world judges. Probes. What personal matter?
On today’s episode of The Be Ruthless Show, I discuss what it means to have the Heart Of A Lion. I discuss why it’s none of our business what Marvin Jones Jr. (or ANYONE’S) personal matter is! And I discuss why we all need to do a better job of respecting boundaries when they’re given.
