What do we mean by ‘Determinants of health’? And does it matter?

Charlie Roberts, a pharmacy student and our student ambassador, recently co-hosted a lively webinar organised jointly with IHPE and the University of Nottingham (UoN) with Trustee Robin Lansman. The event aimed to increase recognition of the Determinants of Health.

What do we mean by ‘Determinants of health’? And does it matter? Charlie started the webinar with a clear explanation of the ‘rainbow’ model of health determinants, outlining the many influences on health from our home, school, work and wider environment.

IHPE provided a discussion panel, with diverse interest and experience:

  • Karen Neil, pharmacology, public health and mental health;
  • Katherine Whittingham, BSc Health Promotion course lead at UoN;
  • Robin Lansman, osteopathy and health promotion;
  • Sylvia Cheater, dental public health, nutrition and settings-based approaches.

Interview with IHPE President Angela Towers Food and Health Advisor FSA

In this trustee interview we explore Angela's food producing hands on farming background. This lead her to study in Agriculture and Environmental studies and then Leadership for sustainability MSc. She has promoted the concept of "local food" as a business and then worked in Public Health always championing eating better food and more appreciation of it's source. She worked on the 5 A day campaign with schools and joined the Food Standards Agency building relationships in innovative ways. More recently her work was in Food Hygiene with the recognized programme of 5 rating points for food premises across the UK. Interview with Past President IHPE Sylvia Cheater MBE

Interview with Past President IHPE Sylvia Cheater MBE

In this interview we discuss Sylvia's career from Financial management, having her own family and then into Barnados charity. Next into NHS oral health and nutrition, introducing water access to school children and the 5 a day fruit offering in the North West. Currently working as a patient champion, still making sure individuals receive the health and welling they deserve no matter their circumstances and background. We chat about health policy being a huge driver in making change for better health. Telling people to stop was less efficient and ineffective. We finally explore the benefits of the digital age for health but also the risks of APPS online offering health benefits with no evidence base. Health Promotion is for the course of life from before birth to older age.
