Do You Like... Civil War
Alex Garland is back in the limelight with his biggest project yet. Civil War is a political thriller... or should I say... a thriller that is less political than we thought. This movie stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, and Cailee Spaeny as "freelance" journalists who are taking pictures of the horrific Civil War that has broken out in America and are on a road trip to Washington DC for a story of a lifetime.
Garland leans less on the political commentary than what was promised in the marketing, but maybe it was better for it? Join Billy Rock and Drew Wendt as they discuss the masterful tension, oddly timed needle-drops, and Kirsten Dunst spotlight that Civil War provides.

Podcast Like It's 1999 - Breakout Director Edition: The Sixth Sense and Being John Malkovich
Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich) hasn't directed a feature film in 11 years and M Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) is our most polarizing director working today, but man, these guys had some serious juice coming out of 1999. Nothing about these two directors announcements as powerhouses was illegitimate. The direction of their careers is not what any of us expected, but has added to their mystique even more.
The Sixth Sense demanded commercial success, critical acclaim, and prestige unlike many horror movies before it and since. And Being John Malkovich was one of the last beacons from an era that empowered independent filmmaking. The previous 1999 episodes shed light into the fears of this decade and the indie smashes that crept through seemingly every year in the 90's. Whereas, these two films, allow us movie geeks to scream about capital "F," Film.
We hope you watch these movies and listen to Drew and Billy chronicle two unique and fabulous movies, and some BAFTA talk to start out the episode. Thank you for listening and welcome to The Do You Like Apples Podcast.

Podcast Like It's 1999 - Comedy Edition: Office Space & Election
Drew and Billy avoid "a case of the Mondays" by discussing Office Space and Election for the next installment of their "Podcast Like It's 1999" miniseries celebrating the 25th anniversary of some of the best movies of that year. First, they recap a few of the movie trailers that debuted during the Super Bowl (1:57), before diving deep on Office Space (15:59) and Election (36:45). These two 1999 comedies have aged wonderfully and bring very different things to the table. Listen on for our discussion and stay tuned for next week where we'll be remembering The Sixth Sense and Being John Malkovich.

Podcast Like It's 1999 - Sci-Fi Edition: The Matrix and eXistenZ
The early winter months at the movie theater have inspired Billy and Drew of Do You Like Apples to look back on one of the more interesting and awesome movie years, 1999!
Lana and Lily Wachowski's,The Matrix, and David Cronenberg's, eXistenz, capture the temperament and anxiety that came at the turn of the century unlike any pairing from this year. Both explore the existential crisis that a lot of the world was feeling at this time. Technological advancement brought the culture to a point that had many of us examining what it means to be human in a world where technology is advancing so quickly. Creating two movies that simultaneously are representative of the time and timeless. And that timelessness quality has allowed these stories to take on even more meaning as the years have gone on.
Even if you don't want to go into that head space, Drew and Billy give the props these movies deserve from an entertainment standpoint. The Matrix showing action in a way cinema had not seen and eXistenz being a brilliant set piece for where gaming was going.
Thank you so much for listening in and join us for the month of February as we look back on 1999. In future weeks we will be having a Comedy Edition, a Filmmaker Debut Edition, and maybe even a 1999 draft.
