Emese Parker on the Journey Into Motherhood | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 5 Episode 6
Today I talk with Emese Parker, RN, WHNP-BC, MPH, PMH-C, about the physical, emotional, hormonal and social transition to becoming a mother, otherwise known as Matrescence (don’t worry, I struggle with the word, too!).
Board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner (NP), certified perinatal mental health specialist, menopause practitioner, and also a mother, Emese leads us into the wild, wonderful, and so often emotionally chaotic ride into this role as “mother.”
This incredible conversation is for you if you are pregnant, newly postpartum, or already along the journey through motherhood.
About Emese:
Emese Parker is a pregnancy & motherhood support specialist, award-winning author, public health geek, mama, and matrescence activist. With over twenty years of health care experience, Parker has been specializing in women’s health since 2008. She is passionate about supporting and empowering women, promoting perinatal mental wellness and walking with women through various life transitions—especially pregnancy and motherhood.
After completing bachelor of science degrees in exercise science and nursing, Parker earned her master of science in nursing from Boston College, and master of public health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
She works in OB/GYN as a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner (NP), certified perinatal mental health specialist and menopause practitioner, and recently launched virtual pregnancy and motherhood-focused life coaching services (tocarrywonder.com).
Her new book is called To Carry Wonder. It's a curated blend of story and art with evidence-based insight, aiming to nurture, inspire and equip women across the four trimesters. By sharing openly about the raw, surprising, funny and even awkward moments of pregnancy and motherhood, mamas can take off their motherhood masks, better understand what they’re going through, and gain resources to authentically grow into who they really are.

The Difference between Self-Centeredness and Self-Care in Motherhood | Motherhood Uncut Podcast Season 5 Episode 5
Today, I walked straight into my recording studio from a morning walk. Not a lot of planning ahead of time for this episode… just a sense that I had to share exactly what was on my mind.
Today’s episode digs into the important concept of self-care in motherhood. A term that is over-used and widely abused by commercialism. This episode also digs into the concept of “self-sacrifice” in motherhood- a term that I believe is misleading and dangerous.
If you find that taking care of yourself feels difficult or selfish or that you don’t have time, or if you struggle with loving yourself fully, this podcast is a must-listen for you.
Today, I refer to Cathy Heller’s podcast episode with Rabbi David Aaron. Please give it a listen here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2FhOQ26POLuR5bQMosodRk?si=93ef6f2a2c114c2d

Today, my friend and colleague, Ashley Wick, and I dive into the big questions that often lie hidden below the surface for success-driven women who become mothers.
Questions that we bring light to are:
What lies outside of the role as “mom” for me?
Am I a “bad mom” if I want more?
What does “doing it all” actually mean, and is it really possible?
How does the idea of “purpose” tie into mental health?
What are the typical roadblocks in reaching our larger purpose-driven goals both inside and outside of the home?

Disclosure, Kate and Deb have not read these books yet, although they come highly recommended by trusted resources.

What if we laughed about it? With Caitlin Murray | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 4 Episode 6

Internal Family System Therapy | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 4 Episode 5
In this episode Kate and Deb discuss the integrative therapeutic approach called Internal Family Systems therapy and how to use it with mothering.
The Internal Family Systems Model is an approach to individual psychotherapy developed by Richard C. Schwartz in the 1980s. It combines systems thinking with the view that the mind is made up of relatively discrete sub-personalities, each with its own unique viewpoint and qualities.
By learning how different parts function as a system and how the overall system reacts to other systems and other people, people in therapy can often become better able to identify the roots of conflict, manage any complications arising, and achieve greater well-being.
The IFS model has 5 basic assumptions:
- The human mind is subdivided into an unknown number of parts.
- Each person has a Self, and the Self should be the chief agent in coordinating the inner family.
- Parts engaging in non-extreme behavior are beneficial to the individual. There is no such thing as a “bad part.” Therapy aims to help parts discover their non-extreme roles.
- Personal growth and development leads to the development of the internal family. Interactions between parts become more complex, allowing for systems theory to be applied to the internal system. Reorganization of the internal system may lead to rapid changes in the roles of parts.
- Adjustments made to the internal system will result in changes to the external system and vice versa. Therefore, both the internal and external systems need to be adequately assessed.
Disclosure, Deb has been studying IFS for about 4 years and attempted to give a very simple description of the practice so listeners can start to understand the concept. This practice has many terms that she did not go into such as; “managers, firefighters, blending, unburdening” and so on. This was intentional because Kate and Deb did not want to overwhelm the listener. There are many great resources to deepen your understanding of this model, but some great book recommendations include “The Sum of All Parts” and “No Bad Parts” both by Richard Schwartz.
Thanks for listening and enjoy the show.

Kids and Clothing | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 4 Episode 1
In this episode, we will explore how to support tweens & teens when choosing how to dress. We discuss this complicated issue for parents as we unpack what is culture and trend, what is “appropriate” and what are our own triggers that get mixed up in the process. This is no easy topic and no right answer. But we left you with some questions to ask yourself when wrestling through this and questions and convos to ask your kiddos so we can continue to help them be critical thinkers.
Some questions you might want to ask yourself are:
How am I getting hooked by gender stereotyping?
Have I explained to my kids that no matter what you wear, people will make a quick (and powerless I might add) judgment of you?
Have you discussed the importance of not judging others for the way they’re dressed?
Have you explained that it's ok and normal to want to feel attractive to others, and that doesn’t mean that you want to have sex or are attention-seeking?
Have you discussed how industries will promote clothes to the pop culture that is historically based on the traditional male gaze which is an old message of men feeling entitled to women’s bodies? (yes that’s a big one)
Have you talked about the fashion industry and how it affects the environment and body shaming culture?
Try answering these 5 questions before discussing.
- What are appropriate clothes?
- Are the clothes appropriate for the weather?
- Do they still fit you?
- Are they appropriate for the activity they are wearing them
- Are the clothes or brands aligned with your values; ethically sourced, environmentally friendly, do they pay their workers adequate wages, are they made in all sizes for all body types,
- When wearing the clothes, do you feel physically comfortable?
- When wearing the clothes, how do you feel about yourself?

Taking What Our Kids Do, Say, and Feel Personally | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 3 Episode 11
Today Kate and Deb dive into one of the most common, confusing, and activating situations in motherhood- taking what our kids do, say, and feel personally.
We have all been there over and over. In this episode, Kate and Deb will discuss:
What is happening for us when we take things personally
The consequences to ourselves, our kids, and our relationships with our kids when we take things personally
Practices we can put into place to take LESS of what our kids do personally
Specific situations in each of their own lives when taking it personally has led to unnecessary distress
Where to find (very necessary) humor in this extremely common experience
Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee or tea, pour yourself a glass of wine, Put on your sneakers, turn up the volume… wherever you are and whatever you are doing, come and mother with us.

The Importance of Connection | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 3 Episode 1
Welcome back!
This season, we start with a conversation about the power or (and struggle around) connection with our kids. We deep dive into why a string attachment and connection with our kids is imperative for their healthy development and also why it so often feels so hard. Throughout this episode, we share examples from our own mothering in times that we have both stayed in connection and also lost connection and why paying attention to these wins and misses matters. You will walk away with some solid ideas on how to best stay steady amidst the storms that inevitably come as you mother your kids from infancy through adulthood.

A quick note about the Motherhood Uncut podcast:
Deb and Kate share quite a bit of information that they bring to the table from their work with mothers, children, and also their own lives. Anytime Kate and Deb share a client's story, they are actually bringing a number of different clients and situations they've seen in their work rather than talking about one particular client. They are never going to reveal names in the interest of protecting a person's anonymity. And on a regular basis, the two sit down with their girls to make sure what they share on this podcast is okay with them. So please know that anytime you hear specific details, Kate and Deb are really thoughtful and take into consideration how these examples might impact others in their lives. Thank you so much for listening. We are so glad you're here.

Childhood Sexual Abuse Prevention: Parenting Safe Children with Feather Berkower | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 2 Episode 14
This week, Kate and Deb have an important and moving conversation with Feather Berkower about childhood sexual abuse and what we can do as parents to protect our kids from sexual assault.
April is childhood sexual abuse prevention month. The more informed and empowered we are as mothers and parents, the more empowered we can help our kids to be, and the less likely they are to experience this type of trauma.
Feather Berkower, Founder of Parenting Safe Children, is a licensed clinical social worker and one of the nation’s leading experts in child sexual assault prevention. She has dedicated her career — which now spans over three decades — to educating parents and youth professionals on how to make their communities “off limits” to child sexual assault.

Understanding Adolescence with Deb Rubin, Part 2 | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 2 Episode 13
In this episode, Kate interviews Deb for part 2 of understanding adolescence. They start to explore the sexual exploration of the adolescent experience and key things to explore with your kiddos. Deb talks about the importance of family orientation vs peer orientation and emphasized how we, as the parents, want to be the source of sexual education; emotional, physical, and behavioral.
Together they talked about the journey of maturation and the contradictions between the hook-up culture and the “liberated” mindset of sexuality in today's youth with the science of what happens in the brain when two people are sexually active.
Above all, it is our job as parents to be a trusting, safe, and solid resource for our children in all topics and especially sexuality.

Your Kids and Substance Use | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 1 Episode 8
Hey there, listeners! Thank you for being here. Don't forget to like subscribe, rate, and share!
In this episode, Deb and Kate will clumsily yet authentically navigate teenage substance use. As two mothers of high schoolers, they are definitely in it and clear that there are no hard answers. Some of the themes are: the adolescent brain, the power of knowing your kids and trusting that, the importance of accurate education, healthy communication and the ideal goal to keep the door of trust and honesty open, making healthy decisions and escape plans, and mostly finding tenderness within ourselves as we all navigate this turbulent journey.
This conversation is not over and we would love to hear questions, success stories and beautiful mistakes.
Thank you.
