What works- eating in moderation or supplements and purified extracts?

What works- eating in moderation or supplements and purified extracts?

A holistic approach that prioritizes whole foods over supplements is likely the safest middle ground for consumption.

  • For example consuming a diet with many different foods with blood pressure-lowering nutrients would have a greater effect on blood pressure than eating single nutrients, such as those found in supplements or in a limited diet.
  • Size or portions, synergies and antagonism, source of food are all important elements
  • Even simple foods in excess and contracted form may be harmful especially when we are on medications --always consult your doctor

GMO-Non GMOs in the context of residual toxins and Ayurveda

GMO-Non GMOs in the context of residual toxins and Ayurveda

-GMO Rainbow papayas are absolutely fantastic to eat

-There could be different methods of genetic modification, including cisgenic, transgenic, and CRISPR/Cas9

-There are concerns about the potential long-term negative consequences of GMOs, such as unintended mutations, gene flow to neighboring crops and wild species, pleiotropy

-Of immediate concern is any residual toxins. This is strictly regulated by FDA, USDA and EPA- 99% of samples are clean

-However we need to keep at cumulative lifetime exposure to toxins

-Having only sweet veggies may not go well with Ayurveda!

A peek at modern dietary approaches through an Ayurvedic lens

A peek at modern dietary approaches through an Ayurvedic lens

In Ayurveda food is classified according to taste as opposed to its chemical constituents

We compare how a vata, pitta and kapha dominant person will do in various modern diets

The DASH diet does offer some basic and very fundamental approaches to health

In Ayurveda food and fasting are both physical and mental

Six tastes are used after factoring various factors such as dosha/prakriti, agni, disease condition, age, condition of bones and tissues; state of toxin removal ( read more on the blog at Ayurkula.org)

An integrative Ayurvedic approach may help us listen to own subtle signals coming from the mind and body.

Proteins in the context of Ayurveda

Proteins in the context of Ayurveda

Most of us get enough protein every day, regardless of the source. In fact, the estimated consumption of protein in the US is about 1.5 times the USDA dietary guidelines for meats, eggs, and nuts.

When consuming proteins, it is important to keep in mind the quality of the protein and digestibility.

In Ayurveda does not break up food into macro and micro nutrients and there is no distinction between having meats or plants, but the emphasis is on a diverse, nutrient-dense diet complementing one's dosha and prakriti. Obviously it did not recommend cruelty to animals or even a monoculture agricultural system.

Proteins could be argued to be the primary constituents of forming the mamsa dhatu and the asti dhatu

If having an excess amount of protein or an inadequate makeup of food sources gives rise to gas and bloating, Ayurveda terms it as something that creates Manda Agni or disturbed and diluted metabolism or digestive fire.

Studies have linked gut and microbiota dysbiosis with diabetes, obesity, and inflammation, as well as the chronic activation of mTOR pathways, which can have negative effects

Let us keep life simple and be healthy

Walk to count 10000, do a 12-3-30 or simply relax and detox?

Walk to count 10000, do a 12-3-30 or simply relax and detox?

10000 steps is not a really magical number, any amount of walking or exercise is beneficial for a sedentary person

The body uses fat as a preferred fuel source when we walk at a rate which uses 50% of our max oxygen capacity

Over a sufficiently long period of time both jogging and walking yield similar increase in oxygen intake capacity

No amount of walking can counteract a bad lifestyle and unhealthy eating

We should be mindful of range of motion and repetitive stress the we take up routines like 12-3-30 on a treadmill

Hiking which involves walking on uneven terrain helps in muscle and joint adaptation and co-activation

Cross training with lunges and squats helps and so do simple yoga routines which by default involve centric, isometric and eccentric motions

Let's walk in our natural cadence, detox and have fun, and don't forget that household chores count towards it as well!

Oh my smoothies!

Oh my smoothies!

We should be careful about nutrient interference, competition and availability when we mix too many things

Why not keep things simple have a whole fruit or two?

Isn't it paradoxical that we are chasing fiber yet we want to consume smoothies! next we will have nutrients as toothpaste with fiber on the side

A cold, raw, rough smoothie can provoke Vata dosha, if you end up tooting, a smoothie may not doing you much good.

Finding our path to wellness.

  • Health is a process of dynamic equilibrium
  • Perfect health results when a happy mental state is coupled with a body which is in a balanced state of doshas (our underlying unique physiological and psychological make up), agni (digestive/mental processing), dhatus(tissues/bones and body make up), mala (toxin creation and removal)

Let's explore our convexity problem

Let's explore our convexity problem

Time to introspect about lifestyle diseases.

  • Is it possible that oversupply and abundance of food (both mental/physical) is the cause of our convexity/obesity problem
  • Do you really think that exotic diets lead us to anything other than a yo-yo behavior?
