Complex Trauma and How to Overcome It
I am Annie McKinnon and If you would like to get in touch or even feature on the show then send me over an email to info@anniemckinnon.org
Today, I’d like to introduce you Harris Eddie Hill (they/them). Harris is an out-and-proud nonbinary podcaster, best-selling author, coach and founder of the Centre for Childhood Trauma Healing; a platform dedicated to supporting neurodivergent, queer or highly empathic adults to overcome their childhood trauma and begin to thrive.
Shortlisted for the Positive Impact and Sustainability Speaker of the Year at the Speaker Awards, Harris is passionate about demystifying healing and helping people to connect to their own ability to heal. Clients take back their power from a medical system that doesn’t always offer tangible solutions and doesn’t always educate clients on their ability to heal.
Harris has survived and overcome trauma, unaccepting family members, cancer, abusive relationships, physical paralysis and mental health challenges, yet they have found their way to emotional freedom and is now passing that power forward.

In this episode, I talk to Jillian Abby. We discuss Jillian’s book and the huge reception it has received, as well as the strange assumption that reading a book about queerness automatically means the reader is gay. We touch on Jillian's experience of studying abroad in Bolivia at the age of 15 and working in an orphanage.
Jillian opens up about her life experiences and challenges, including her time as a rotary exchange student in Bolivia.
She discusses the difficulties she faced after graduating from college and entering the working world, feeling like she was following the expectations of others rather than her own desires.
We also discuss the importance of recognizing when a relationship is not working and the tendency to idealize a partner.
Jillian talks about her struggle with self-acceptance and coming out, including her own internalized homophobia and how she saw queerness as an obstacle to her perfect life. She talks about how watching queer content on Netflix helped her understand her sexual attraction in a safer way and how it was an interesting experience of moving out of living so much of her life in her head and now living it in her body.
Finally, she discusses her engagement and long-distance relationship, as well as her upcoming book on sex and intimacy, which will focus on the experiences of those who have been in heterosexual relationships and may have struggled with dissociation or disconnection during intimate moments.
Jillian was on the show last year and I am delighted to welcome her back to hear about her newly launched book, Perfectly Queer and to find out where she is now….You can find her full bio and links below:
About Jillian Abby
Jillian has mastered reinvention throughout her life to create the most whole and satisfying journey. She left the comfort of her hometown of Buffalo, NY, to study abroad in Cochabamba, Bolivia, at age 15.
As an adult, her resume includes Certified Public Accountant, Licensed Massage Therapist, craft beer bar owner, home-schooling parent, black belt martial artist, and CEO of her corporate storytelling business, Storyteller Soul, LLC.
Her most recent role as a newly out lesbian and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community was by far her riskiest and most rewarding change. Her memoir, Perfectly Queer, was selected as a global contest winner by Hay House Publishing and
has been published in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Perfectly Queer hit #1 on Amazon’s list of New Releases for LGBTQ Biographies and Memoirs and
was featured by Good Morning America on their list of “15 delightful books perfect for
spring reading.”
Jillian serves on the board of the 501(c)3 organization, Tampa Home-school Inclusive Events (TBHIvE), and is a member of Tampa’s LGBT Chamber of Commerce. She offers virtual LGBTQ+ support sessions for people in their coming out journey and those who wish to understand the LGBTQ+ better and need a space where they can ask open and honest questions. She loves to open hearts and minds through her podcast, Life and Love in the Q,
her blog site QueerAbby.com, and via TikTok at @AskQueerAbby.

About Cristina
Cristina Saracu [she/her] is the Founder of Incluziune pe Bune (Inclusion for Real), a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion NGO. Her major expertise lies in LGBTQIA+ inclusion, but she prioritises its intersectionality with any other communities to create and to provide support that looks at the hollistic approach to inclusion.
Cristina's professional history is a narrative of strategic vision through people and about people, an unconventional approach for the Early-ʹ90s Romania, during which time leadership was not yet understood to entail what it does today (people development, mentoring, coaching...). She developed teams, brands and companies, intuitively implementing principles of diversity and organisational inclusion, whilst there was barely a theoretical discussion relating to these topics across the Romanian business environment.
Cristina believes that one of the major roles of the decision maker is to grant a real chance and to see beyond what the interviewed individual is today, to "foresee" what they can become. Last but not least, to help them, to teach them, to provide them with all the tools to succeed. Cristina brings the benefit of a practical, managerial perspective to DEI projects – having worked for 30+ years in top management and consultancy and having been involved for many years as a volunteer in supporting human rights and LGBTQIA+ projects & NGO’s, prior to launching Incluziune pe Bune in 2022. A volunteer for many years, Cristina was aware of the need for an honest and open dialogue about diversity and inclusion, about equity and belonging – an essential imperative in any type of organisation, especially from the perspective of a coherent and applied strategy. At the moment, she is involved in consulting and volunteering projects, in both organisational and educational areas. Also as an Ambassador of Romanian Charter of Diversity, she was invited to speak or facilitate different kinds of events all around the country. Recently, she was elected as President of MozaiQ LGBT – one of the most important national organisations who support the community in Romania. Diversity is a fact; inclusion is a choice – it is the chance we give to change mentalities, the prerequisite for balancing organisational dynamics.

About Jess
Jess, is an accountant living in a very pretty rural town, in North Wales, where she has spent most of her life. It took Jess a while to come to terms with the whole being gay thing, and she didn’t come out until she was 29. She is however now very much out of the closet, and living her best history nerd life with her beautiful partner Kathryn spending their weekends getting lost in History at various National Trust Properties.
Growing up in the wake of Section 28 and being a massive nerd, Jess had no queer role models to identify with. After coming out she leaned heavily into learning about queer women in history and their achievements. Jess has always loved writing and poetry and has written as a hobby for many years. When her niece was born last year she realised the vital importance of having relatable role models in history and society as you grow up, and that no child should feel alone as they travel that path of working out who they are and what they want to be, so I started to write verses about the women I had been learning about to share with her. From that other people wanted poems too and The Little Verse Co was born creating bespoke poems based on marginalised women from history.

In this episode I talk to Vanessa Emily Hunt who is an author of children's books and are for parents who want to gently introduce and share the birth story about donor conception with their child using a simple bedtime story.
In Vanessa’s own journey to have a family, she looked very carefully at how she could share with her child that he or she is donor-conceived.
This sweet gentle story of Ginny and Yuna, two mothers who go about starting their own family on Mars is the first in a series of books Vanessa has written for the different kinds of families that will need the help of a gamete donor in order to build their family. The series is called The ABC’s of How You Had Me by Vanessa Emily Hunt.
For Vanessa it was so important to set this in the near future with sub-themes of science and space exploration as a nod to the ever-growing need for assisted reproduction in all family models.
When not writing, Vanessa has developed a coaching practice to support women who are thinking of freezing their eggs and need a little extra support. There is a downloadable free guide called Egg-Freezing 101 available now at vanessaemily.com
