We Need an Army of Love! Youth, activists talk solutions to a city's problem

“Straight Words With Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad” on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio, April 23, 2024, took on serious topics, delved into serious questions and engaged with powerful activists and young people on air.

Their spirit: We can build unity and trust among ourselves and we need an Army of Love to establish peace and rescue our community, and the Nation of Islam model for lessening tension and resolving conflict.

We were joined by Tio Hardiman, Violence Interrupter and longtime peacemaker; Chicago pastor and warrior woman Victoria Brady with hip hop artist and cultural teacher Tony Mono, who works with young people, and Matthew, a young brother who works with Pastor Brady and shared his views of what’s happening with guns, youth and activity in Chitown streets.

We dialogued with callers, discussed our guests' work to make change and touch our children, the challenges of dealing with violence, America’s history and her addiction to and love of violence, the role of music and culture, the open enemy and his plots, the importance of family, how politicians talk solving “root causes of crime” but steadily increase funding for the Chicago police department with a $2 billion budget.

Solution talk is strong during this exchange of minds, hearts and ideas. This is a short clip but the full conversation is available here on Spotify.

Campus protests and what CNN won't show you

Campus protests and what CNN won't show you

Mainstream media is ablaze with breathless reports of growing on-campus protest against Gaza genocide across the country. In an analysis, Straight Words host Naba'a Muhammad delves into what is going on and what CNN isn't showing you.

His arguments:

One, the reports you are seeing are important but the mainstream media framing and the strategy and intentional move by Jewish groups and Zionists is to pull attention away from the slaughter of Palestinians, including discovery of a mass grave in southern Gaza, and to position Jewish people and students as victims.

Two, what you are seeing is part of an actual campaign engineered by the Israeli government to pressure, malign, and destroy these protests and to control what happens on college campuses and in U.S. society.

Three, you are hearing about "unsafe" feelings among Jewish students but not about actual attacks or arrests -- except the arrests of pro-Palestinian protesters. And these students you are hearing from are not necessarily folks who were just randomly chosen for interviews but "voices" put forward by pro-Israel groups, organizations and activists.

Four, you are not hearing the voices of the anti-genocide demonstrators, who are organized, have positions, concerns and actions they are appealing to their respective schools to take. But their voices have been long stunted, silenced and shunned. You're not hearing anything about that. But you are seeing heavy handed police aggression when schools will end in weeks, why? So take a few minutes and check out his analysis.

Chitown Story: Can we stop the violence? Wait. Are you blaming Black youth?

“Straight Words With Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad” on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio, April 23, 2024, took on serious topics, delved into serious questions and engaged with powerful activists and young people on air.

Chicago violence: Can we solve it? Are youth really the problem? We were joined by Tio Hardiman, Violence Interrupter and longtime peacemaker; Chicago pastor and warrior woman Victoria Brady with hip hop artist and cultural teacher Tony Mono, who works with young people, and Matthew, a young brother who works with Pastor Brady and shared his views of what’s happening with guns, youth and activity in Chitown streets.

We devoted almost two hours to this vital subject, dialoguing with callers, discussing our guests' work to make change and touch our children, the challenges of dealing with violence, America’s history and her addiction to and love of violence, the role of music and culture, the open enemy and his plots, the importance of family, how politicians talk solving “root causes of crime” but steadily increase funding for the Chicago police department with a $2 billion budget.

And what are young people facing and thinking, how can we build unity and trust among ourselves and how about an Army of Love to go rescue Black folk? Solution talk is strong during this exchange of minds, hearts and ideas.

Blacks saved democracy, what did we get? More problems. More neglect.

Blacks saved democracy, what did we get? More problems. More neglect.

Just a reminder: Black folks saved American democracy and put Joe Biden in the White House in 2020. But what did we get? Looks like less money and more problems.

We pulled out a little list and discussed some of these things: Failing politricks under Joey B. with no federal police reform or federal voting rights protections, land grabs targeted at HBCUs and trillions of dollars in underfunding at the state level for decades with Tennessee State University and other Black schools battling Republican legislatures, greedy governors, and an array of assaults.

Where is the White House bully pulpit on this? The Education Dept.? Anybody? Anywhere among our Dem “friends?”

Check it out. This was part of a Straight Words broadcast with hosts Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad, callers and guests as we dialogued on a variety of subjects in the first hour and throughout the night during our April 9, 2024 broadcast on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago.

You can get the full broadcast here on Spotify but we figure we’d break you off a little something to consider. By the way in the full broadcast and a couple other features we roasted the “Good Times” rachet reboot from Netflix. Just in case you might be interested? We’re Real Black Talk Radio. No garbage allowed: Dissecting Good Times reboot

No garbage allowed: Dissecting Good Times reboot

Pemon Rami is an international film producer, director, professor at Loyola University and former Director of Educational and Public Programs for the DuSable Museum of African American History. He is also a member of the Chicago Black Arts Hall of Fame.

He walked us through important history, gave us industry insights and explained so much tied to and behind the “hot garbage” that is the failed Netflix reboot of Good Times.

In this excerpt from a full interview on of “Straight Words With Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad,” the teacher, author and creator dispenses powerful wisdom. It’s less than 16 minutes.

It was great Black Talk Radio during our April 9, 2024 episode on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago as we talked about the “Good Times” rachet reboot from Netflix, Black art, Black images, Black stereotypes, Black entertainment history and the White powers that be behind what you see.

But beyond smashing the Netflix fiasco, we also talked about independent Black projects, international collaboration with Nigeria’s film industry and creating projects in Africa, Blacks as drivers of culture, the power of American entertainment, culture vultures and the assassination of the Black image.

These streaming services also stream their programming around the world and distribute these products in various languages to a truly global audience. Also we’re not writing and controlling these projects that feature us, it’s the White Entertainment Industrial Complex.

There is also a Change.org petition calling for cancellation of the show and Carl Jones, who worked on “The Boondocks” satirical animation series, has publicly said he has nothing to do with the hot garbage and dropped out early without seeing a script or an episode.

Scroll through our content for the full interview.

Black girl, 11, obstructs justice in murder trial?

Black girl, 11, obstructs justice in murder trial?

First murder charges, now charges of obstruction of justice against 11 year old Black girl in New Iberia, La., in the death of a 36 year old White man.

Guests Laramie Griffin of Evolve Louisiana and Charlene Muhammad of The Final Call call describe the charges, the case and what seeing a small child in a oversized jumpsuit in a packed courtroom felt like. She wasn't going home.

She went to court April 16 where a judge was to sentence her after a mid-March plea deal. Her murder charge was dropped and she pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice. She will testify against her 15 year old brother who is charged with murder in the case.

How does an 11 year old obstruct justice, where was her counsel, have advocates been able meet with the child who has been jailed for over 150 days, what about her brother, another child charged in the case, and the mother?

We continued covering the strange and outrageous plight of this child on "Straight Words With Naba'a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad." This segment aired April 16, 2024.

The Black GOP-affiliated judge was to decide what sentence to be given to the child with prosecutors pushing 7 years with 3 1/2 year suspended sentence. A juvenile justice agency failed, however, to complete its sentencing report and the case was held over until May 8.

In the full interview, available in our content, Brother Laramie was joined by Sister Charlene NOI Student Minister Rashad Muhammad of Baton Rouge.

Questions about the child's capacity to understand the charges, lack of transparency, and other questions in the case still abound. Questions about motives and any narrative about what happened remain absent, police and legal paperwork has been scant and a gag order imposed on the case remains in place.

The judge is overseeing the little girl's case and the cases against her brother and her mother, who is charged with being an accessory to murder. She is held on $400,000 bond.

Brother Laramie talked about the criminalization, locking up and targeting of Black children in the state.

We give you an insightful 35 minutes here but did a deep dive with 90 minutes on this heart-wrenching topic and we are not letting this story go by Allah's Grace!

We air live Tuesdays, 9pm-Midnight Central Time on WVON AM 1690 in Chicago, and is livestreamed on the I Heart Radio app and WVON.com. Get replays and our content here.

"A system that creates predators:" Illinois Youth Center's harsh lessons

"A system that creates predators:" Illinois Youth Center's harsh lessons

In this short clip, which is part of bigger interview on "Straight Words With Naba'a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad" on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio talk Chicago, the hosts talk candidly about abusive, horrible conditions in Chicago's so-called juvenile detention center and the lasting lessons they teach.

The Black male youth have been exposed to mold, beatings, tainted water, little programming filthy conditions in a warehouse converted into place for "reform." The program originally aired live April 16, 2024.

In the end, the abuses, overmedication and beatings of young Black males leaves the bitter, angry and clear that the system is never about doing justice. It's about who wields power, whether on the street or inside the "juvie jail."

You can check out full interview for more truth, insight, warning and what our children face. We cannot continue to failed them.

State Senator Lakesia Collins, a lifelong Chicagoan, mother of 3, and organizer, came on the show to talk about her unannounced Illinois Youth Center or "Juvie Center" on the West Side of the city. Michael McGrone, who is the principal for the school inside the institution, talked with the Black lawmaker and came out publicly about the atrocious and unlivable conditions. She found horrible mold conditions, vents clogged with soot and youth who talked to her about being overly medicated, unable to shower regularly, vermin scurrying around, recycled air and very little sunlight and not being to go outside for sun, fresh air and greenery. She found allegations of children physically assaulted by security, one's braids ripped out of his head and a child beaten with handcuffs used as brass knuckles.

There was a press conference after the principal at the school had reported these horrific conditions with hip hop entrepreneur Damon Dash and activist Fred Hampton, Jr., speaking out.

Damon talked about the misuse of these children, how they are being abused, failed and punished when speaking up, in audio coverage from co-host James G. Muhammad, who attended the press conference and conducted the live interview with the lawmaker.

She did an impromptu visit to juvie center after speaking with the school principal. She demanded to see the facility. She toured it, spoke with young men, saw the conditions and started to work to change them. She talked about work started what needs to happen, how the community must be involved and how public servants must be about public service. These problems had to have existed for years, why was nothing done about it? asked Brother James.

Elijah McClain: Letters, Justice Campaign as EMT faces sentencing in death of young Black man

Straight Words hosts Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad, and callers, in the final hour of the April 9, 2024 episode on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago, activist MiDian Holmes updated us on the fight for justice for #ElijahMcClain. Elijah was a gentle soul and young Black man stopped by police who ended up in a cop chokehold, went into a health emergency, was injected with massive sedative from EMTs and died is up for sentencing. Jeremy Cooper, 49, the second EMT charged and convicted in his death in Aurora, Colo., in 2019, will be sentenced April 26, 2024. Our “Letters for Elijah” campaign is pushing for us to send cards and letters to the judge asking for the severest sentence possible. We have a draft letter on the website. Hear the discussion and get details at www.straightwords.com.

Lastly the hosts closed by talking about conditions facing Black pathology, breaking the false narratives that surround our history, the daily lies, the need for self-determination, unity and bold steps toward self-independence.

Our April 9, 2024 show, “Straight Words with Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad” was great Black Talk Radio.

Straight Words hosts Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad, callers and guests dialogued on a variety of subjects in the first hour and throughout the night during our April 9, 2024 episode on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago.

We opened by talking about Joe Biden, the Dems, Black folk, Black interests and Black politics in the age of politricks alongside the Good Ole Boys and Trump in the GOP. Voting, politics, agendas and questions were in abundance as we explored this important topic.

We also talked about HBCUs under assault again at Tennessee State University and other Black schools as they fight ugly Republican legislatures, greedy governors, land grabs, underfunding and an array of assaults.

What do we need to teach our children and how do we save our children was another hot topic as phone lines lit up and callers weighed in.

How Two we welcomed Pemon Rami, an international film producer, director, member of the board of the Illinois Arts Council, member of the Luminary Board of the Independent Film Alliance, professor at Loyola University and former Director of Educational and Public Programs for the DuSable Museum of African American History. There is also a Change.org petition calling for cancellation of the show and Carl Jones, who worked on “The Boondocks” satirical animation series, has publicly said he has nothing to do with the hot garbage and dropped out early without seeing a script or an episode.

In the final hour, activist MiDian Holmes updated us on the fight for justice for #ElijahMcClain. Hear the discussion and get details at www.straightwords.com.

That was our April 9, 2024 show, “Straight Words with Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad.” It’s great Black Talk Radio.

Can't hold the hate? White civility falling is falling away, what should we be doing?

Can't hold the hate? White civility falling is falling away, what should we be doing?

Final Call Newspaper writer Anisah Muhammad shared findings contained in her cover story, "Unpeeling the Mask of White Civility," during a conversation with Straight Words hosts Naba'a Richard Muhammad and James G. Muhammad during this segment of our Straight Words broadcast April 2, 2024 on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago.

We talked facts, figures, how Blacks lead the country as victims of hate crimes, or attacks driven by White hostility and deadly anti-Blackness in America. It's everywhere, schools, police forces, the military, politics, ugly public discourse and mockery, and brazen hatred and disdain for Black folk?

How should we been responding? Is Biden the answer? Is Trump the answer? What's the answer? Separation? Can we get along with the children of our slave masters in peace? Emphatically not!

Our show airs live Tuesday nights, 9pm to Midnight Central Time over WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago, and streams over the I Heart Radio app and WVON.com. Subscribe so you don't miss an episode!

Black buffoonery reboot? Easter eggs and rabbits replace Jesus? Surviving America's fall?

Black buffoonery reboot? Easter eggs and rabbits replace Jesus? Surviving America's fall?

We hit the airwaves with hot topics, starting with old time stereotypes and a new level of disrespect and garbage contained in a coming Good Times" animated remake during our April 2, 2024 broadcast of Straight Words on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago. The show was hosted by Naba'a Richard Muhammad and James G. Muhammad.

Are we only good for buffoonery in 2024? Nothing that is stereotype breaking? Drugs, murder, welfare, crumbling ghettos and mockery, is there nothing more for us? Who is writing these travesties and why are we still taking these roles? Are we cultural slaves in 2024? Can we create something for ourselves?

What's up with Easter and pushing Jesus out and the Easter Bunny in? What's up with the eggs, the new garments, the money spending and what's its connection to pagan celebrations?

Questions from callers asking is it really about color? Of course, it is. And we show and prove in making our points and stressing the need to come out of the wicked cultural and other ways of America.

What about survival as the country continues to unravel, what do we need to know, what should do and should we even be talking about this?

Lastly, plenty of love and appreciation for the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. But please don't attack the Fruit of Islam, the men of the Nation, as social media exploded as such attack and a response was captured and shared. Remember we walk the earth in love, humility and peace, so let's keep the peace.

Are we talking White solutions to the plight of the world's first Black Republic or more U.S. devilishment and continued suppression of the Haitian people? Is the country really on fire? Gangs or paramilitaries? What's the history?

Do Haitians have their own solutions?

Is the so-called UN intervention a farce and attempt to put the Black face of Kenyan troops on another White powers invasion?

What about Haitian groups and leaders? Is there a Haitian solution? What don't we know and why? Do you really trust mainstream American media?

Are Black civil rights leaders backing Biden administration's invasion agenda?

News you ain’t hearing–but need to: West Africa, coups, elections and more

Eugene Puryear of Breakthrough News came through and gave us a great breakdown on news out of West Africa and other places not being talked about. He came on live Straight Words With Naba'a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad March 26, 2024 on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago.

He talked about the recent election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the new president of Senegal March 24. The former tax inspector and 44 year old political leader who was released from prison two weeks earlier. He was a favorite of young people and stood against corruption and economic reform.

He talked about the overthrow of regimes in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, popular support among the people and kicking the European powers, in particular France, Germany and the U.S. military as these countries seek self-determination.

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have joined together, leaving ECOWAS, the major and longtime regional organization, with a pact to aid one another.

How is Senegal faring? What about the other three nations, what projects do they have underway? What about sanctions against the new governments in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger? Are new alliances being formed with Iran, Russia, China and the alternative entity BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and other countries with emerging economies) designed to find new alliances, solutions, and getting from under the grip of the West? What about Gaza, Haiti and other international issues? Hear from Eugene Puryear and the show hosts as we delve into the news you’re not hearing and why it’s important. Part 3: Black girl, 11, and murder case in Louisiana

Part 3: Black girl, 11, and murder case in Louisiana

We continued to follow and track the case of an 11 year old Black girl in New Iberia, La., who was charged with murder in the death of a 36 year old White man. She went to court again in mid-March and there was a plea deal where the murder charge was dropped and she pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice. She apparently will testify against her 15 year old brother who is charged with murder in the case.

On April 15, a Black judge will decide what sentence will be given to the child with prosecutors pushing 7 years with 3 1/2 years suspended sentence. Laramie Griffin of Evolve Louisiana came on Straight Words With Naba'a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad March 26, 2024 on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago. He shares how questions around the case abound, questions about motives and any narrative about what happened remain absent. He talks about the targeting and criminalization, lock up and targeting of Black children in the state.

How does an 11 year old obstruct justice, where was her counsel, have advocates been able meet with the child who has been jailed for over 100 days, what about her brother, another child charged in the case, and the mother who is also facing charges of covering up the murder and locked up on $400,000 bond.

Wesley Muhammad: UFOs, govt reports, cover-up & the truth

Early in March, the federal government released another report regarding "unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP)," popularly known as UFOs. The report was released by the Defense Dept.'s division known as AARO (All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office) which is supposed to look into these phenomenon. Brother Dr. Wesley Muhammad joined Straight Words With Naba'a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad to discuss the report, its truthfulness and the deceptions and disingenuous language used to try to mislead and deceive people. Hear his analysis and answers to questions like what about extraterrestrials, the Black "Mona Lisa" on the moon, the "Greys" cited by ufologists, where do these crafts come from, who made them, what is their purpose, and is there a connection to Black folk and the Nation of Islam and did the Hon. Elijah Muhammad teach about these crafts, and what did he teach, are these crafts found anywhere in scripture? Plus other questions in a power hour for your consideration and enjoyment. This broadcast on WVON AM 1690 live on March 19, 2024.

Haiti: What is really going on and what is the US role?

Haiti: What is really going on and what is the US role?

In an hourlong conversation, Robert Roth talked to us about what’s really happening in Haiti, and explained how so-called “gangs” are paramilitary groups entrenched in the life and politics of the country.

They are foot soldiers for political parties and oligarchs that have continued to control the first Black republic, he said.

The description of Haiti as a “basket case,” “failed state,” and gang-infested place of perpetual chaos are American code words that reflect “anti-Blackness” and “White supremacy,” he said during our March 5, 2024 broadcast. In reality, Haiti has been marginalized by the U.S. and has vast natural resources that America desires to take and exploit, he added.

The paramilitaries are using U.S. weapons as the USA works, and has worked, to control and cripple Haiti from her inception, said the longtime activist against American imperialism. He is also co-founder of the Haitian Action Committee and a board member of the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund. He spoke to the hosts of Straight Words With Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad in an interview aired live on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago.

The wide ranging interview includes extensive background and history on the U.S., Canadian and French operations and policies to destabilize Haiti, the proposed use of Kenyan police in Haiti, the unelected prime minister who cannot reenter the country following a visit to Kenya, the situation between the paramilitaries, the current government and the powerful in Haiti, violence and its causes.

It also deals with the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in Port-au-Prince, and why grassroots movements, like Fanmi Lavalas, which was led by popularly elected President Jean Bertrand-Aristide before he was overthrown in a 1991 coup and forced into exile with American troops taking him out of the country, are the answer. This powerful hour delves deep into U.S. meddling, manipulation and complicity in murder in Haiti.

Robert also shared news of an upcoming event, “Haiti: A Call to Action,” scheduled for Saturday, April 6, 1-3 pm West Coast time at the East Side Arts Alliance, 2277 International Blvd, in Oakland. This is a live event and the program will also be available on Zoom. Keep checking in at  https://haitisolidarity.net/ for details.

“On the 20th anniversary of the 2004 coup that overthrew the democratically elected administration of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the Fanmi Lavalas Party, we commemorate the continued resistance of Haiti’s grassroots movement,” said Haiti Action Committee. Featured speakers will include Dr. Maryse Narcisse and Joel Edouard “Pacha” Vorbe, members of the Fanmi Lavalas Executive Committee; Dr. Rama Ali Kased, U.S. Palestinian Community Network, Assistant Professor of Race and Resistance Studies, San Francisco State University; Professor Walter Turner, host of KPFA Africa Today, President Global Exchange Board of Directors.

“Haiti’s Lavalas governments made historic advances in health care, women’s rights, housing, economic justice, food sovereignty and education. The 2004 coup reversed these gains and ushered in 20 years of foreign occupation, dictatorship and terror, and a wave of neoliberal economic policies that have created a disaster in Haiti. But the achievements of the Aristide administrations are etched deep in the soul of Haiti and remain a foundation for Haiti’s future,” said the group.

11 year old Black girl charged in murder of White man Part 1

11 year old Black girl charged in murder of White man Part 1

An 11 year old Black girl charged with murder for killing a White man? We were joined by Jennifer  Landry of Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children and Laramie Griffin of Evolve Louisiana as they told the horrific story of the child jailed in New Iberia, La., charged with second degree murder and their work, with the efforts of others to see the girl freed.

They spoke with us March 5, 2024 for an astonishing edition of Straight Words With Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad aired live On WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago.

Their interview came two days before the child was to have a hearing on the charges and she will have spent 100 days behind bars. Yet there has been no talk of motive, how the killing occurred and what the child had to do with it. A Black judge has imposed a gag order in the case. Are we looking at old style “Southern justice” reminiscent of lynchings of Black children, women and men?

According to media reports out of Louisiana, Judge Roger Hamilton, in a hearing in January, set a trial date for the girl on March 7, and again announced the girl was charged with  murdering  New Iberia resident Kameron Bledsoe, a 36 year old White male, last November.

According to television station KLFY News 10 in New Iberia, in a March 7 report, the trial for the child has now been postponed. “Her trial is now being pushed back another week,” the station reported. “It has been exactly 100 days since that 11 year old has been in police custody where she is charged for the first degree murder of Bedsole. The initial trial was set for Thursday, March 7, to find out if she will stay in custody or be released back to her family. At the trial, the child’s attorney Ronald Haley requested a motion of continuance as they claimed to have a short amount of time to look over all the evidence presented in the case. … Family, friends and advocacy groups showed up in support of the 11 year old who her family describes as a wonderful kid with a bright future ahead of her.”

“Honorable judge Roger Hamilton granted the request for the trial to now begin on Thursday March 14 at 1 p.m.,” News 10 reported.

Activists said the girl and her family were neighbors of Mr. Bledsoe.

The girl’s 15 year old brother has also been charged with first-degree murder and her mother has been charged in connection with the death. Some believe the girl was charged as a way to bring those responsible for the murder forward. Sabrina Washington, the mother, is charged with two counts of accessory after the fact.

The case has moved swiftly. While it can take years to come to trial in such cases, the child’s case is moving quickly. Activists have held marches, phone blitzes and other actions to demand the girl’s release and say she is innocent. They worry about the impact of the incarceration today and in the long term. But where are Black elected officials on this major case, why the gag order, why is this child accused of murder with no explanation at all?

Straight Words is telling this important story and plan to keep following it by God’s grace. This is outrageous and cannot be allowed to stand, said show host Brother Naba’a as he and co-hosts Brother Bj and Brother James conducted the discussion. This is part one of this incredible interview.

There is also an online petition calling for the girl’s release: https://www.change.org/p/demand-for-the-release-of-incarcerated-11-year-old-girl-from-new-iberia

Don't let my son die in prison! Bring Darrell home!

Don't let my son die in prison! Bring Darrell home!

In what is a disturbing trend, Straight Words co-hosts Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad heard the heart-rending story of a distraught mother and tight knit family seeking help in bringing Darrell Crawford, who has served nearly all of a 20 year sentence home, after years of medical neglect and a painful hernia that has discolored his abdomen, leaves him in excruciating pain and, they say, threatens his life.

His mother, Mrs. Finch and her family say Darrell entered the prison system in Arkansas as an active and fit young man. But since 2017, his life at a correctional facility in Forrest City, Ark., has been hell. He received a hernia surgery but it has devastated his body, leaving him with open wounds, blackened skin, problems with his intestines and without needed medical treatment.

Instead of hospitalization and corrective treatment Darrell, who is a 52 year old Black man, has survived on pain meds, ibuprofen and languishing in his cell using alcohol to try to clean his wounds. Five years of cries for help at prison sick calls have resulted in nothing to relieve his suffering. His family says he has suffered from total neglect of care his for life because he's incarcerated. Hear their shocking and painful story, as the mother and family fight to bring Darrell home now! This powerful segment on “Straight Words With Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad was recorded on February 27, 2024 in the final hour of the evening program.

How do we bring our people out of the shadows, out of street life? How do we make peace and restore our families?

How do we bring our people out of the shadows, out of street life? How do we make peace and restore our families?

How do we address crime and disorder in the streets? How do those engaged in shady dealings come out of the darkness and into the light? How do we help them? How do we change them? Can we really rebuild our neighborhoods?

How can we heal family relations? How do we bring peace into our homes and make peace with those we are related to? How do we bring back the Black family, strengthen it, keep it together and make a new beginning?

Those were some of and the types of questions Naba’a Richard Muhammad and Bj Murphy took from callers in an evening where listeners shared their concerns and thoughts with the hosts of “Straight Words” broadcast from WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago with James G. Muhammad joining the fray in an evening of passionate talk, questions, answers and ideas Feb. 20, 2024.

Listen in as we talk about healing ourselves, strengthening our unity, understanding and obeying divine law for success, tapping into the power of doing the right thing to make progress and learning all about ourselves and why this is not the time to be a petty criminal or a big criminal.

This is the day of our rise; we need to embrace the powerful God who wants us to have the best in this life and the best in the Hereafter. And what do the Eight Steps of Atonement have to do with this?

Is God with Black folk? Beyonce. Farrakhan, family & survival. BlackUnity. Satan vs Lucifer politics. Saviours' Day 2024 & Black Love. Can we really build our community? Hosts, callers chop things up.

Naba’a Richard Muhammad and Bj Murphy started the “Straight Words” broadcast from WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago with James G. Muhammad joining the fray in an evening to passionate talk, questions, answers and ideas Feb. 20, 2024.

The discussion was free flowing as the hosts prepared for the Nation of Islam Saviours’ Day convention in Detroit later that week—Feb. 23-25. A keynote address Feb. 25 by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan is scheduled to close the gathering of thousands in the city where the Nation of Islam was founded.

We read and discussed a powerful letter from Min. Farrakhan published in a special edition of The Final Call that was full of meaning and wisdom.

Caller questions from ranged from who is Master Fard Muhammad, the Messiah of the Christians, Mahdi of the Muslims and great teacher of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad? Should we be expecting a spook, spirit, Mystery God or the Divine Supreme Being? Is God interested in the affairs of Black folk and could we be God’s Choice today?

While the Biden administration is looking at Russian and the in-custody death of a Russian dissident, what about Black Panther Party, Black Liberation Army and Black political prisoners dying and languishing in USA prisons?

How do we address crime and disorder in the streets?

How do those engaged in shady dealings come out of the darkness and into the light? How do we help them?

Can we really rebuild our neighborhoods?

Why must we break out of the mindset, thinking and lifestyle of White people as America continues to rapidly unravel?

Lucifer Vs. Satan—Trump Vs. Biden—Politics in 2024: Why it won’t work and why we need an all-out quest for unity and self-determination! How do we heal the wounds inside of our families? Why can’t we keep looking for a Caucasian political messiah and can America save herself?

Plus brilliance and beauty of Beyonce, the White country music attacks and the Black woman wins again?

These and other topics and questions about our people, present and future made for interesting and enlightening conversations.

Relationship Talks: Will You Be My Valentine? Is That The Question?

Katrina Muhammad, author of “Relationship Talks,” called in Feb. 13, 2024 and hosts Naba'a Richard Muhammad and James G. Muhammad of Straight Words were able to engage in a quality conversation about relationships, courtships, questions and answers for those seeking a mate, and aspects of pre-marriage practices, compatibility, pre-marital counseling and some of the 2,000 questions that are contained in her book along with other points of interest and research. And we enjoyed real life wisdom from Brother James who has been married for 42 years. Great Talk. Great Segment. Great Program.

Black Anthem Drives White MAGA Mad, Relationship Talk, CROE Media and Black archives

Straight Words program co-host Bj Murphy kicked off the evening and co-hosts Naba’a Richard Muhammad and James G. Muhammad did the rest. The night of Feb. 13 opened with a round up focused on Saviours’ Day 2024 in Detroit with the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan’s keynote address scheduled for Feb. 25 and more.

Then we veered into the White hot anger of White folk at the Super Bowl over the singing of the National Black Anthem “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” by Andra Day, whining from Black conservative apologist Armstrong Williams and the real history of the “Star Spangled Banner.” It has never been an anthem for everyone.

While the author of the “Star Spangled Banner” was writing about the land of the free and the home of the brave, Frances Scott Key was a Maryland slave owner. The third verse of the anthem includes the words:

“No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

We had a powerful conversation and we’d like to share it with you.

UFOs, Black Folk and the Nation of Islam: What's the Truth?

UFOs, Black Folk and the Nation of Islam: What's the Truth?

Straight Words program hosts Naba’a Richard Muhammad and Bj Murphy interviewed Illia Rashad Muhammad, Nation of Islam student minister, author, documentarian and scholar on what the U.S. government long denied but now has admitted exists: Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon or what are called popularly and long described as UFOs.

The Nation of Islam has long taught the reality of this craft “The Wheels,” “Mother Plane,” and “Baby Planes” as the Hon. Elijah Muhammad taught the truth of these crafts, their power, their purpose and connection with the ultimate fall of America and the deliverance and rise of Black people, said Brother Illia.

He dispenses fascinating and authoritative information about how governments and militaries around the world have tracked and studied these crafts which are far superior to current military aircraft. These “UFOs” have been spotted around military installations and nuclear facilities in the U.S. and in other countries. They have been seen and chased by military jets and seen as national security threats.

During a March 2023 lecture at Mosque Maryam, the Nation of Islam flagship mosque and headquarters in Chicago, Brother Illia taught about “The Reality of the Wheel and the Presence of God.” “For decades, the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam were mocked and ridiculed for their Teaching on the reality of so-called UFOs or UAPs (unidentified flying objects and unidentified aerial phenomena),” said The Final Call.

Brother Ilia is also producer of the new documentary series, “Answered” and author of the book, “UFOs And The Nation of Islam: The Source, Proof, And Reality Of The Wheels.” He is also a member of the Nation of Islam Research Group.

“We have to let the world know that that man that you hear about and see, the Honorable Minister Farrakhan, he’s not just talking stuff but he is the actual representative of that power that you call the UFO phenomena,” he said, according to The Final Call. Scriptures in Jewish, Christian and Islamic theology also point to the reality of God’s Chariots or the Wheel such as in the book of Ezekiel in the Bible, he explained. Listen to his presentation and you decide its value. This program originally aired June 6, 2023.

Why Black Men Must Protect Black Women in the Workplace and Why We Must Build Our Own House

Why Black Men Must Protect Black Women in the Workplace and Why We Must Build Our Own House

We see Black folks in major positions and think that they are doing well, safe and secure. They are not.

Brother Naba'a Muhammad talks briefly about this and relates it to the situation at CNN where then contributor Angela Rye was disrespected and sexually harassed by then CNN talk show host Chris Cuomo, whose brother was governor of New York at the time.

Why was she afraid to speak out? Brother Naba'a deals with how she was wrongly treated and talks about why Black men must protect Black women in the workplace and why we must build our own house. There is no safety and security in the house of our former slavemasters and their children. We must build our own house!

This excerpt is from the Jan. 23, 2024 broadcast of “Straight Words With Brother Naba'a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad,” which airs live Tuesday nights, 9pm Central Time, on WVON AM 1690 Black Talk Radio Chicago, on the I Heart Radio app, WVON.com and the WVON AM 1690 Facebook Page. Black Women In Our War of Resistance: Revolts, Revolutions And A Will To Fight
Feb 08, 202454:34
Revolts, revolution and insurrection: We fought to free ourselves

Revolts, revolution and insurrection: We fought to free ourselves

We put the spotlight on Black History not often taught. In this first hour of a two-hour session on how we fought from the shores of Africa to have our blood shed and shed the blood of our enemies on the soil of America. We didn't easily go into captivity nor death.

This hour on “The Hidden History of Black Resistance” aired “Straight Words With Naba'a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad,” Black talk and talk back radio, on Feb. 6, 2024.

Who were the fighters, what are their names, what are their stories? Were Black women involved? How was the 2nd amendment ties to fears of slave insurrections? Could you be anti-Black and anti-slavery at the same time?

Our guests were Dr. Abdul Haleem Muhammad, Student Southwest Regional Minister of the Nation of Islam and Dr. Ray Winbush of Morgan State University. They answer those questions and more in stunning conversations with co-hosts James G. Muhammad, who leads the segment, Bj Murphy and Naba'a Richard Muhammad drops in for a few.

"Straight Words" with Brother Naba'a, Brother Bj and Brother James broadcast live Tuesdays 9pm to Midnight Central Time from the historic studios of WVON AM 1690 Chicago and live-streamed over the I Heart Radio app, WVON.com and the WVON AM 1690 Face Page.

You can get both segments about slave insurrections, revolts and revolutions together if you listen to the evening's full show. Otherwise we broke them out into two separate segments for you. With Chairman Kofi Taharka of the National Black United Front in the second segment, the presentations and information are outstanding.

Happy Black History Month 2024!

Why did Black Press hold town hall on Black-Jewish relations? Important segment from Straight Words Jan 30 2024 broadcast

Why did Black Press hold town hall on Black-Jewish relations? Important segment from Straight Words Jan 30 2024 broadcast

Straight Words hosts Naba'a Richard Muhammad and James G. Muhammad discussed, cited some history and asked questions about why the main Black Press group, the National Newspaper Publishers Association, held a national town hall meeting on Black-Jewish relations during its recent mid-winter meeting in Florida during a very serious segment of the show. NNPA executive director Ben Chavis and NNPA Chairperson Bobby Henry were invited to join our conversation but didn’t respond to Brother Naba'a's invite. “NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis added that the NNPA, members of the Anti-Defamation League, and others planned the Town Hall, which included U.S. Reps. Deborah Wasserman Schultz and Sheila Cheflius-McCormick, ADL Senior Vice President National Affairs Max Sevillia, and professor emeritus of the Department of Psychology at Florida International University, Dr. Marvin Dunn,” said NNPA. The townhall, captured on YouTube, had participants offer “nostalgia,” “personal stories” of benevolent Jewish individuals and “history” from supposed Black-Jewish relations during the civil rights era. They pledged to take the “conversation” around the country. Yet there was no real discussion of problems in the so-called relationship and the power Jewish groups exert over Black people and Black affairs. No discussion of the vicious, unwarranted Jewish assault on Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam, his billion-dollar lawsuit against the ADL, who had a representative on stage, or similar questions. Why?

Jewish groups targeting Black and Latino lawmakers known as "The Squad" with $100 million spending to thwart their reelection in 2024 wasn’t discussed. There was no talk of the Jewish efforts to derail the 1984 historic presidential run of Rev. Jesse Jackson. No talk of Jewish groups backing the 1978 Bakke decision that killed affirmative action. No talk of Jewish groups targeting Black celebrities, athletes and lawmakers, who aren’t anti-Jewish but have a different point of view on issues. No talk of ADL having U.S. police officers trained in Israel or spying on Black groups and others. No talk of the 40 years of lies, slander and assaults on the character and reputation of Min. Farrakhan as well as a Jewish onslaught against all of his good work to save a suffering and abandoned Black community. Check out the co-hosts' Jan. 30, 2024 conversation.

A Black Press town hall on Black-Jewish relations? Decertifying killer cops clean up policing? What’s happening in the world? We had questions, we sought answers. Bj Murphy, took the night off so Straight Words continued with hosts Naba’a Richard Muhammad and James G. Muhammad. We opened Jan. 30, 2024 with an appeal for help with final arrangements for a Believer in Chicago and shared good news of a new location and special event for Rosebud Reflections, which offers chic, stylish clothing for women, as we had a brief chat with Muslim power couple Barney Muhammad and Dora Muhammad.

Then we discussed, cited some history and asked questions about why the main Black Press group, the National Newspaper Publishers Association, held a national town hall meeting on Black-Jewish relations during its recent mid-winter meeting in Florida? NNPA executive director Ben Chavis and NNPA Chairperson Bobby Henry were invited to join the conversation but didn’t respond to the invite. “NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Cephus “Uncle Bobby” Johnson of the Love Not Blood Campaign based in California serves the families of those who have lost loved ones to police violence. Uncle Bobby – the uncle of Oscar Grant killed by a transit cop in New Year's Day 2009 in Oakland – to a police accountability board. The Peace Officer Standards Accountability Advisory Board, a nine-member board, was created by the state Senate and signed into law by the governor in 2021.

Uncle Bobby, interrupted by cops at his door because of a shooting near his home, talked about the new body and decertifying police officers, stripping them of their licenses to work as police officers, to keep killer and abusive cops from moving from jurisdiction to jurisdiction or state to state to avoid responsibility for their actions and to keep a badge and a gun. Repeat offenders are a major problem with deadly and abusive law enforcement personnel, Uncle Bobby noted.

Brother James chopped up global affairs with Final Call writer Brian E. Muhammad: From the Israeli war on Palestinians, to fear of a wider war, rising efforts to throw off American dominance and 1,000 Black pastors calling on President Biden to press Israel for a ceasefire in devastated and destroyed Gaza.

No reparations, no vote in 2024?

No reparations, no vote in 2024?

Reparations work is underway in California as are efforts to demand that President Biden sign an Executive Order empaneling a Reparations Commission before the Democratic National Convention later this year.

We talked about the differences between state reparations and federal reparations with longtime advocate Kam Howard of Reparations United and Chris Longden of the Coalition for A Just and Equitable California.

We asked were the reparations discussions during the 2020 elections a sham designed to pull Black folk into voting? And our guests shared their view on the primacy of reparations as the issue that Black demands need to be put behind. Leading to a cry of "No reparations? No vote in 2024!"

“In 2021 and 2022, our all-volunteer team of\ Reparations advocates wrote language in legislation requiring California agencies to recognize the unique lineage of African-American Californians who descend from U.S. Chattel Slavery,” noted the California coalition. Reparations United declared the “goal of full reparations is to ‘wipe out all consequences’ of the crimes and wrongful acts, which include engaging in—cessation and guarantees and assurances of non-repetition, restitution, compensation, satisfaction, and rehabilitation.”

Naba'a Richard Muhammad On Radio One's Carl Nelson Show

Naba'a Richard Muhammad On Radio One's Carl Nelson Show

Award-winning broadcaster Carl Nelson, who has a nationally syndicated show on the Radio One Network, invited Naba'a Richard Muhammad to join him in a Jan. 23, 2024 conversation on-air and to take calls from listeners.

The discussion included looking at the challenges our children and teachers face in the public school system and the need for us to be actively involved finding solutions.

"We have to do something for ourselves. We can't wait for others to save us. And if we act in accord with the time, according to the Teachings of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad and Min. Farrakhan, we will be successful," declared Brother Naba'a.

The problems in schools are our community's problems and we must take responsibility for solving them, said Brother Naba'a.

The conversation also touched on topics such as the breakdown of the family, the importance of Black teachers in the school system, and the need to hold political leaders accountable.

The conversation shifted to the upcoming 2024 national election and the dilemma faced by Black voters in choosing candidates who truly represent their interests.

The discussion concludes with a call for unity, self-determination, accountability and proper engagement to protect Black interests, not politics as usual.

But the bigger question is can and will a deeply divided, angry, armed America survive the 2024 presidential election? argued Brother Naba'a.

Help keep our work going and getting stronger! If you could give $25, $35, $50, $100 or more, we need it. But every little bit truly helps too and we appreciate whatever you give.

Plus a call for letters right now to Judge Mark Warner calling for the maximum sentencing of Aurora, Colo., EMTs Peter Cichuniec, 51, and Jeremy Cooper, 49, who were found guilty of criminally negligent homicide in connection with the death of Elijah through giving him an overdose of ketamine, a powerful sedative after he had been placed in a police chokehold and had a health emergency. Black Wealth Gaps: What are the Actual Facts & Factors Impacting Us?

Black Wealth Gaps: What are the Actual Facts & Factors Impacting Us?

States with the Biggest, Smallest Wealth Gaps by Race/Ethnicity (2024)

In America, there is racial inequality in many areas, including our wealth. Current trends show that a wide financial gulf continues to divide racial groups in the U.S., with Hispanic and Black Americans still at the bottom of the economic ladder. Non-Hispanic White Americans have a median household wealth of $187,300, compared to $14,100 for Black households and $31,700 for Hispanic households.

Some key factors driving the racial wealth gap include unequal access to higher education and employment for minorities, as well as residential segregation that still persists.

WalletHub measured the financial inequality among racial groups in each state and the District of Columbia. We did so by analyzing each state across 21 key metrics, ranging from the median household income gap to the unemployment rate gap.

“Even decades after the Civil Rights Movement, there is still a high degree of wealth inequality among racial groups in America. These gaps persist not just in held wealth, but also in wages, poverty rates, homeownership rates and unemployment rates. Part of this wealth disparity is due to unequal access to education, which can put some people on a better financial footing from the start,” said Cassandra Happe, Wallet Hub analyst.

In-Depth Look at the Places with the Highest Wealth Gaps

District of Columbia

The District of Columbia has the highest wealth gap overall – unfortunately, the seat of our nation’s government is also the most financially unequal place to live. In D.C., White people earn around 66% more than Black people, the most disadvantaged group.

D.C. also sadly ranks first when it comes to gaps in the unemployment rate and the poverty rate, and these gaps are even more dramatic. Black D.C. residents are around 488% more likely than White residents to be unemployed, and they have a poverty rate that’s over 359% higher.

There is still some good news from the District of Columbia, though. Despite its problems, it does have the lowest gap in homeownership in the country. It has one of the lowest divides when it comes to high school graduation, too, but one of the highest for college education.

North Dakota

North Dakota has the highest homeownership gap in the country, with White people over 86% more likely to own a house than Black people. The state also has a big rift when it comes to the unemployment rate, though its most disadvantaged group is actually Hispanic people, who are over 381% more likely to be unemployed than White people.

When it comes to the poverty rate, Black people are in the most disadvantaged position, and are over 208% more likely to be in poverty than White people are.

One area where North Dakota has a lower gap than most states, though, is high school graduation.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin has the second-highest gap in median household income in the country, with White residents making around 50% more than their Black neighbors. In addition, Wisconsin also has a large gap in the rate of residents who have health insurance. Hispanic people, the most disadvantaged demographic, are over 283% more likely to be uninsured than White people.

The poverty gap is also very apparent in Wisconsin. Black people are around 244% more likely to be in poverty than White people. While ideally no one should be in poverty, gaps like this in Wisconsin and other states show how minorities lack the same opportunities as White people.

Going hard in 2024! Hosts, callers, guests express themselves. It's explosive!

Going hard in 2024! Hosts, callers, guests express themselves. It's explosive!

When we did our first show of the new year, the opening hour was explosive as hosts Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad, callers and guests chopped it up on serious subjects, such as police torture in Chicago, begging White media for coverage, top stories for 2023 and the outlook for 2024, Black folk under assault from within and without our community, how to stop violence and build unity, why we need to love and embrace one another, Black male-female relationships, White America’s Memo to Black People and other topics.

We get a touching story from Marsha McIntyre Lowe, a Black mother, who tells the story of her suffering son, wracked by health failures, medical misdeeds, left gaunt, suffering from a stroke, in a wheelchair, denied compassionate release and castrated while incarcerated. That was our Jan. 2, 2024 show, “Straight Words with Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad.” It’s 51 minutes of great Black Talk Radio.

We air live Tuesdays, 9pm-Midnight Central Time on WVON AM 1690 in Chicago, and are livestreamed on the I Heart Radio app and WVON.com. Get replays and our content here. Subscribe to us on Spotify and on YouTube, www.youtube.com/@straightwordsmedia.
