#BruteCast S07 E12 - Strategic Waters: Iraq and Security Planning in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin

#BruteCast S07 E12 - Strategic Waters: Iraq and Security Planning in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin

In this episode we talk to Dr. Edward J. Erickson and Col Frederick Lorenz, USMC(Ret) about the the new edition of their book "Strategic Waters: Iraq and Security Planning in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin". The issue of freshwater scarcity has always been of vital concern to humans, and today it is increasingly characterized as a strategic factor in security planning. In the Euphrates-Tigris basin, water apportionment and management combined with climate change are increasingly emerging as threats to regional stability. The United States has a longterm strategic interest in the Euphrates-Tigris basin that, in turn, is directly linked to the national interests of the riparian states. The expanded second edition of Strategic Water: Iraq and Security Planning in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin updates analysis of the geopolitical situation and expands coverage of the aspirations of the basin countries. Finally, the book presents new conclusions and a proposed framework for action in the next 10 to 20 years. You can find a PDF copy of the book here, from Marine Corps University Press: https://www.usmcu.edu/Outreach/Marine-Corps-University-Press/Books-by-topic/MCUP-Titles-A-Z/Strategic-Water-Expanded-Edition/ All opinions expressed here are those of the individual and do not necessarily reflect those of the Krulak Center, Marine Corps University, the United States Marine Corps, or any other agency of the U.S. Government. #BruteCast S07 E03 - Contested Logistics: Sustaining the Pacific War w/ NHHC

#BruteCast S07 E03 - Contested Logistics: Sustaining the Pacific War w/ NHHC

Before World War II, the U.S. Navy relied on an ad hoc system to manage logistical support for its ships. The scale and geography of the war in the Pacific nullified earlier ways of acquiring and distributing sufficient materiel. This booklet explores the ways in which the Navy conceptualized and implemented overseas logistics from the age of sail through the Pacific War. These processes, both in their planned form and actual operation, reveal two significant themes: (1) logistics is line work; and (2) preparation and planning ahead of time are critical for the successful execution of operations, without which the Navy struggled to supply forward-deployed personnel. https://www.history.navy.mil/research/publications/publications-by-subject/logistics.html All opinions expressed here are those of the individual and do not necessarily reflect those of the Krulak Center, Marine Corps University, the United States Marine Corps, or any other agency of the U.S. Government. #BruteCast S07 E02 - Why Study Irregular Warfare in a Time of Great Power Competition

#BruteCast S07 E02 - Why Study Irregular Warfare in a Time of Great Power Competition

Today’s strategic environment has returned the conversation back to Great Power Competition, the competition of two large nations in the pursuit of their interests and to influence interstate relations. As our focus has shifted from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan towards our pacing threat in the Pacific, so has our focus away from Irregular Warfare. But, not every nation is a great power, and as we’ve seen from the end of World War II and especially since the end of the Cold War, not every military conflict is between two great powers. Where do we focus our limited attention in this new strategic environment? We are joined by Krulak Center non-Resident Fellow, Preston McLaughlin in this discussion. Enjoyed this episode? Down the Rabbit Hole on the Russia-Ukraine War #44–Prigozhin’s Mutiny: What the **** Just Happened?

Down the Rabbit Hole on the Russia-Ukraine War #44–Prigozhin’s Mutiny: What the **** Just Happened?

A weekend filled with hot takes on an armed hot dog vendor and 25,000 of his closest friends came to an end as befuddling as its beginning - the mutiny/insurrection/coup/road trip begun by Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin came to a halt 200km south of Moscow 24 hours after it started. Some of Wagner is joining the Russian army, some is going to Belarus, and Prigozhin's prospects are unclear. #TeamKrulak Distinguished Fellows Ian Brown and Dr. Yuval Weber don't claim to have the answers to this bizarre sequence of events, but will at least get you up to date on where all the players currently stand. Down the Rabbit Hole on the Russia-Ukraine War #43–Putin’s Chef Marches on Moscow

Down the Rabbit Hole on the Russia-Ukraine War #43–Putin’s Chef Marches on Moscow

So, we don’t know much, but we can say this: Yevgeny Prigozhin, Putin’s favorite hot dog stand vendor and head of the Wagner Group, is in open conflict with Russia's Ministry of Defense. It’s no longer a war of words, as the Wagner Group has seized the city from which the Ministry of Defense is directing the “special military operation” in Ukraine, and appears to be moving its combat forces toward Moscow. Newly minted #TeamKrulak Distinguished Fellows Ian Brown and Dr. Yuval Weber give the first of what will likely be many updates on this unexpected turn of events. Interview with General David Berger, Commandant of the Marine Corps

#TeamKrulak community, we wrapped up this season of the #BruteCast in style - we were joined by General David Berger, Commandant of the Marine Corps! When General Berger assumed his duties as the 38th Commandant, his Planning Guidance laid out a far-reaching vision for reforming and adapting the Marine Corps for the challenges of what looked to be a turbulent decade for the United States and its partners around the world. We asked General Berger about his time in office, the impact of Force Design 2030 on the Fleet Marine Force, challenges he thinks the 39th Commandant will need to deal with, and more! Panel on "Boots and Suits: Historical Cases and Contemporary Lessons in Military Diplomacy"

Panel on "Boots and Suits: Historical Cases and Contemporary Lessons in Military Diplomacy"

The #BruteCast was pleased to welcome Ambassador Philip S. Kosnett and a panel of contributors to discuss the recently released book Boots and Suits: Historical Cases and Contemporary Lessons in Military Diplomacy (Marine Corps University Press, 2023). This book seeks to explain military diplomacy through the lens of both the military and the diplomatic corps of countries, including perspectives from the United States, the Netherlands, and Turkey, among others. It examines the aspects of military diplomacy as used by nations and what differentiates this concept from both military confrontation and diplomatic overtures when used as discrete concepts by nation-states rather than employing military diplomacy to advance their strategic goals.

Our panelists were Amb. Philip Kosnett (Ret.), Heather Steil, Alison Storsve, Joanne Cummings, and Michael Skaggs. NOTE: in the recording, Mr. Skaggs is incorrectly identified as a contractor. He currently serves as a civilian senior lecturer for strategy and policy at Defense Security University.

You can request a hard copy of the book from the Press by emailing them at mcu_press@usmcu.edu, or download the PDF here: https://www.usmcu.edu/Portals/218/Boots%20and%20Suits_web.pdf

Down the Rabbit Hole on the Russia-Ukraine War #40 - Hypersonic Treason & Russians Invade Russia

#TeamKrulak #Russia SME Dr. Yuval Weber returns for an update on the war in #Ukraine, with developments both abroad and on the battlefield. We discussed how Putin's focus on #Ukraine has altered the balance of power in the conflict between #Armenia and #Azerbaijan; the nuclear arrangement with #Belarus; 18th-century cartography as a casus belli; the situation in #Bakhmut and extremely online Yevgeny Prigozhin's latest Telegram rants against Russian military leadership; the bizarre situation in Belgorod as Putin sent in the Russian military to defend local Russians from other Russians invading Russia; and wrap up with the implications of #Ukraine's rapid integration of the Patriot missile system into their air defense, F-16s entering the chat, and a little hypersonic treason.

“Please @ Me, #Sergeant: Social Media and Military Professional Development”

Back in March, the Army Leader Exchange decided to run its own #MarchMadness tournament highlighting military media content creators, and after many intense rounds of voting, the finalists, who all joined the #BruteCast on this panel, stood poised to claim the title of Content Creator Champion. Now, while few us needed an excuse to build yet another playoff bracket during March, this contest also shined a light on just how different military leaders and curators of military professional development content were using #socialmedia platforms to share useful educational knowledge with a wider community. So we were very excited to have the finalists join us to share their perspectives on the uses of social media as a knowledge base, engagement tool, and professional development resource for those in uniform looking to prepare themselves and their subordinates for the challenges of future warfare. Our panel guests were: Sasha Maggio, Nikki Dean, Dr. Elena Wicker, and LtCol Travis Hord, #USMC.

This #BruteCast continues our look at one of the themes we’ve discussed a lot over the last several months, and that’s the many different ways entities around the Marine Corps are contributing to the Fleet-wide changes underway with Force Design 2030. We welcomed two guests from the Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity (MCTSSA), Major Steve Gore and Capt Brian Atkinson, to tell us more about what MCTSSA does, their specific roles in naval systems integration and JADC2, and how this all feeds into Force Design 2030.

Skip Crawley, “Operation Downfall: The Invasion of Japan”

Skip Crawley, “Operation Downfall: The Invasion of Japan”

1 November, 1945, was supposed to be "X-Day" - the beginning of the largest amphibious operation in history, landing Allied forces on the Japanese island of Kyushu. This would mark the start of Operation Downfall, the invasion of Japan's home islands, which Allied leaders expected would be necessary to end World War II. Ultimately, Operation Downfall was cancelled after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the entry of the Soviet Union into the war against Japan. Yet Downfall was well into the planning stages when World War II ended, and estimates of the invasion's possible outcomes expected casualty levels in the millions for all sides. #BruteCast alumnus Skip Crawley takes us back through the preparations and anticipated execution of the invasion that never happened.

Down the Rabbit Hole on the Russia-Ukraine War #37 – ISIS With Snow, And An Intel Tale Full of Discord and Dismay

Well, this is what we get for waiting too long between episodes - Dr. Yuval Weber, #TeamKrulak's #Russia subject matter expert, had a lot of ground to cover today. We discussed the assassination of #Russian milblogger Vladlen Tatarsky via exploding statuette, Finland formally joining #NATO, what renewed violence between Armenia and Azerbaijan means about #Putin's inability to meet regional security commitments, videos circulating showing the brutal execution and mutilation of #Ukrainian prisoners of war by #Russian soldiers, and finally the rapidly unfolding story of the spillage of classified US intelligence on the gaming app #Discord.

All opinions expressed here are those of the individual and do not necessarily reflect those of the Krulak Center, Marine Corps University, the United States Marine Corps, or any other agency of the U.S. Government.

BGen Valerie Jackson, USMC, “Inside the WEZ: Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa”

Strategic competition requires persistent presence and engagement with partners and allies around the globe. And while competition with China in the INDOPACOM region garners regular attention, the US AFRICOM area of responsibility has become increasingly critical to effectively countering the pacing threat. Under AFRICOM, the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) conducts operations to enhance partner nation capacity, promote regional stability, dissuade conflict, and protect U.S. and partner interests.

BGen Valerie Jackson, USMC, deputy commanding general of CJTF-HOA and director of the Krulak Center, joined us live from Camp Lemonnier to discuss the valuable work the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines of CJTF-HOA are doing in the region to support African partners and allies, and strengthen the strategic influence of the United States against global competitors.

Emily Abdow, “The Boxer Rebellion: Bluejackets and Marines in China, 1900-1901”

We welcomed author Ms. Emily Abdow to this episode of the #BruteCast to talk about her new book The Boxer Rebellion: Bluejackets and Marines in China, 1900-1901 (Naval History and Heritage Command, 2023). In the summer of 1900, foreign diplomats living in Beijing’s Legation Quarter were besieged by Chinese imperial soldiers and “Boxers,” members of a secret society determined to rid China of foreign influence. Defending the Legation Quarter was a small international guard that included 56 American sailors and marines. Relief of the Legation Quarter required additional U.S. sailors, marines, and soldiers to join an international coalition and face the significantly larger force of imperial soldiers and Boxers. The conflict was the U.S. military’s first taste of coalition warfare on a global stage and its first time meeting China on the battlefield.

Ms. Abdow's book is available for free as a PDF from the Naval History and Heritage Command: https://www.history.navy.mil/content/dam/nhhc/research/publications/publication-508-pdf/Boxer_Rebellion_508.pdf Ms. Abdow also has an article available on the occupation of Veracruz, Mexico, in 1914: https://www.history.navy.mil/browse-by-topic/wars-conflicts-and-operations/early-20th-century-conflicts/veracruz-1914.html

Down the Rabbit Hole on the Russia-Ukraine War #34 - Breaking News on Broken Drones

This "Rabbit Hole" episode was supposed to be about the fighting around #Bakhmut, but breaking news today got our team's attention. With reports that #Russian fighter aircraft had intercepted an American MQ-9 Reaper drone and subsequently caused the drone to crash because of "reckless, environmentally unsound, and unprofessional" flight maneuvers that also "demonstrat[ed] a lack of competence," Dr. Yuval Weber and Maj Ian Brown looked at just what the Russian pilot might have been thinking (spoiler alert: thinking did not appear to enter into the equation). With echoes of recent #Chinese jet interceptions in the South China Sea, Maj Brown took listeners through a quick, and passionate, class on aviation safety (quite passionate, we had to bleep him out a couple of times). Dr. Weber also reviewed another breaking story that #Russia appears to be doubling down on its Suicide Squad recruiting technique by seeking female convicts to bolster depleted ranks.
