They share 3 beautiful sons together, along with a love story that has moved them across the country (several times), seen them through big career shifts, and now, into the leap of faith as business owners. Staying open and fully invested in each other's dreams, they have been able to create a life full of passion, purpose, and creativity as entrepreneurs.
Mandy recently became the fourth female owner of the beloved Nevada Fine Arts in Midtown, Reno. The store specializes in Art Supplies, Framing, Printing, Classes, and Gallery Exhibitions. Moving forward, in addition to carrying on the many traditions that customers have come to love at Nevada Fine Arts, Mandy's focus is to fully connect herself and her team with the creative community. Her main goal is to build genuine relationships, show support in the community, and to create opportunities full of rich experiences.
Candace Garlock
We had the extreme pleasure of talking to Candace Garlock in her studio. Candace is more than an artist and educator, she is an inspiration.
EXCERPT FROM CANDACE'S BODY/BODY ARTIST STATEMENT!
There is a beauty—a vulnerability—within each of us. Finding that beauty beneath the suffering of living with chronic illness is the focus of this particular body of work. Susan Sontag, Illness as a Metaphor wrote “Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship in the kingdom of the well and the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.” I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2011, after many years of unexplained symptoms like dizziness, brain fog, memory loss, spasms and tightness in limbs, trouble walking….
As an artist, Candace Nicol Garlock uses an array of mediums in her work. The coalescence of printmaking techniques, painting, photography (and sculpture, too!) overlap and converge with color, texture and line in a collaboration of mixed, experimental beauty. With her appreciation of the interconnectedness of everything, she explores relationships: human and environment, human and animal, human and human.

Sam Sprague
We had the extreme pleasure of sitting down with Sam Sprague, who owns Micano Home.
Sam was one of the founders of the Midtown District and has quite the story of how he became a successful store owner and artist in Midtown.
"My real name is Calvin Sprague.
Born in Fernley NV 1963
Education- no formal education
For 15 years, I was a manager at Custom Truck, designing buildings and logos. One day a woman walked in and asked who designed the store . When I told her I did, she said I was a linear genius and that I was wasting my time there. After meeting with her, she said I was wasting my time and should do something with my talent. I opened Micano Home in the months after that in 2003. Micano is an abbreviation for Americana. I got the idea after living in Egypt, where people would say to go get the Americano. Micano Home.
In 2004, Chis from Sushi Pier, Tammy from Chocolate Walrus, and myself starting having meetings, we wanted to have a wine walk. But we needed a name. Chris mentioned the bar behind my store named Midtown Bar. We borrowed the name - Midtown and added District. We started having meetings at Sushi Pier 2. Raul, from El Adobe, and The Jessica from
Junkees were some of the first faces there. By 2005, we had a name and the vibe. In 2007 -2008, I took a job at Costco working from 5am to 11, then I'd ride my vintage moped to Midtown. I also saw Troy - from Junkees riding his motorized bike, and we became friends. I didn't know it at the time, but this was the movement that started the biggest Reno neighborhood shopping corridor in Reno. We had given the city a place to call ours. Ace Hardware moved to Midtown. Most of us became the original board members and we started having functions.
My store changed , in 2008 from a store to a maker store. My sister had walked on Dec 2007 and said, "the coolest things in here is the art you made," That was the biggest moment of my stores life. The next day, I threw away 30 grand worth of inventory, mostly dark African art and Mexican art, both too cultural for Reno.
The biggest contributors to my store have been all the unsung friends who have unselfishly given their time to help me. Three of my best friends died during the period of helping me, sometimes helping me through the toughest times of my life. Just to see me make it. If I owe anyone it's my friends for being so unselfish, if I have one skill that stands out. It might not be my optimism, my crazy work ethic, or my ability to dream things into reality. It might be my ability to make friends, that are willing to help someone with a dream - to out blue collar artist on Main street .
Love my friends."
Eileen Fuller
We had a wonderful conversation with Eileen Fuller about local arts clubs and organizations. Eileen's art is always inspirational, and I am sure you will find inspiration in our conversation.
Eileen Fuller is continuing her 7th year as club show chair with the Latimer Art Club. She is pleased to have many volunteers, new and old for this committee. She has served two 2-year terms as club president, and enjoys promoting the club in outside speaking engagements, and did so with the 100th anniversary of the club at Nevada Museum of Art, Artown, PBS Art Effects and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) in 2021. The club had four excellent exhibits celebrating the milestone year.
Starting her second career as a professional artist in 2003, Eileen first worked in the banking industry while raising two wonderful children. Now she is a proud grandmother to 3 boys and one great grandson and just this month a new great granddaughter.
Her first and foremost paintings are in watercolor, but she also is a pastelist, graphic artist, and sometimes paints in acrylics and mixed media. Eileen’s subject matter varies from landscapes to florals and botanicals, people and portraits, in a mostly realistic interpretation. She has taught private and group lessons. Eileen believes that everybody is an “artist” but some just have that ability buried under years of disuse and little confidence. She enjoys helping people of all ages to uncover their skills!
Eileen Fuller is also serving a 4th continuous year as president of the Artist Co-operative Gallery of Reno, where she became a member in 2010. The gallery is located at 627 Mill Street in Reno, operating successfully since 1966. It is open daily from 11-4, and she has a wall of art there. The Artists Co-op has just completed an exciting project that Eileen would like to share with the art community, called “Emerging Artists”, where 5 of our co-op members were mentors for several months with selected new artists. This process was mutually rewarding for both the members and the new artists, who were showcased for the month of January at the gallery.
Marilyn Newton
Today, we celebrate International Women's Day with Marilyn Newton.
For more than half a century, Marilyn Newton was a photojournalist for the Reno Gazette Journal. Covering the news, she made friends along the way, and Newton's stories reflect a life lived with a passion that few can even imagine. We sat down with Marilyn Newton as she reflected on her life and shared her enthusiasm for the photos of Nevada she now creates and displays at the Artists Co-op.
Nettie Oliverio
We sat down with Nettie Oliverio to talk about her involvement with the Reno Arts Community and some of the current art projects she is involved in. This was a fascinating conversation that you will want to listen to.
Here is Nettie's bio.
"Nettie Oliverio has been working to balance right and left brains all her life. She moved to Reno in 1975 fresh out of the University of Kansas with a degree in chemistry and two previous summers of touring Italy with Alabama State Ballet.
Fascinated by computer technology, she acquired another degree in IT and began teaching at the local university and community college while developing a computer curriculum for the local Montessori schools. Parents of students sought her help with computers in their professions and her IT consulting business was born in 1994.
To continue to balance her brain, Nettie has volunteered for a variety of Arts & Culture organizations over the last 40 years, assisting in successfully raising the funds to build a new home for Reno’s 85-year-old Reno Little Theater, serving on the City of Reno’s Arts & Culture Commission for 10 years, chairing the City’s Public Art and Arts & Culture Grants Committees, co-chairing the regional Reno Arts Consortium and serving on the board of the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, Reno’s Broadway house.
Those experiences over the decades of change and growth for Reno allowed Nettie a birds-eye view of how culture builds community, and in 2013 the Reno City Council appointed her to the Reno Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board to help guide the rebuilding of downtown Reno after a devastating economic downturn.
Recognizing the historic strength of the integration of arts and culture with commerce, in 2017 the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) awarded Nettie their Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the growth of arts and culture in Nevada.
In early 2019 Nettie joined Doug Wiele and Rick Casazza in the creation of the Reno Public Market in the position of Arts and Culture Director for the project, which led to an offer to join Foothill Partners Urban Development as a Development Partner.
She continues the collaboration of culture and commerce with Foothill Partners in the creation of the Oddie District, home to the Generator maker space, and has her eye set on a few fun projects to come."
