In episode 2 of Coach's Corner, Jordan Addison & Jamie Olsson sit down with Cycle Coach & G!RO Sensei Danny Roberts Clarke and Ultra legend Matt Falconer (aka @b1rdmn) to talk all things “training” for ultra. Danny has many years experience coaching athletes & riders of all abilities all around the globe, and in this podcast, by popular demand, we turn his bundle of knowledge towards the crazy world of ultra. We also benefit from some incredible first hand accounts of the experience itself from our mate Matt, as well as finding out how to train for an Ultra, and how important the training is vs other aspects.

When we asked what you guys wanted to hear, this one was by far and away the most requested and we had some great questions submitted for this one too. Regardless of your riding ambitions, the ultra scene always makes for some fascinating stories and we enjoyed recording this one, it’s well worth a listen whether it’s the kind of events you are doing or not. SPECIAL GUEST - Pro Cyclist Rory Townsend

"What I love about cycling is the self improvement nature of it. I know i might not be the most talented rider, as a youth i was so far off it. But i just knew that if I just worked harder than everyone else, it would pay off."

In this latest episode, host Jordan Addison sits down with Rory Townsend, professional cyclist for Ireland & Canyon DHB Sungod respectively. A local to G!RO, born and raised in Surrey, we have seen Rory rise from local races as a junior, to his first professional contract, to representing Ireland at the World Championships in Harrogate 2019.

We really enjoyed speaking with Rory, and hearing his story of how hard work and dedication pays off, and in his case outweighs his natural talent as a junior. Its a great listen that celebrates the journey from Surrey Roads to racing around the World. Rory has aspirations to join a World Tour team, and hopes to represent Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics this year.... and we are fully behind him and wish him every success!

Special Guest Miiro Michael - Founder & Chairman of Masaka Cycling Club.

"For us, the first aspect is for these girls to build their self-esteem, believe in themselves, believe they can change this world, believe they can be mentors & examples to other young girls."

Since opening G!RO in 2013, we've had the pleasure of meeting some amazing and brilliant people. Miiro Michael of Masaka Cycling Club is quite honestly one of the most inspiring people we have met & it was an absolute pleasure to speak with him on this podcast.

Having suffered with Polio as a child, leaving him with disability, Miiro has had to overcome challenges and adversity throughout his life, and is now a Human Rights activist based in Masaka, Uganda. Seeing the potential and power of cycling, he set up Masaka Cycling Club with the simple goal to see men, women, boys and girls of all ages and all abilities, build their self esteem & allow hope in their lives where previously there had been none.

As well as nurturing the next generation of professional cyclists, Miiro's passion is to see cycling break down social barriers of disability, women's rights, gender based violence & education in Uganda - one bike ride at a time! Miiro is an incredibly inspiring man, and we were honoured to spend some time with him on this podcast.

April sees G!RO launch its Communities Building Communities campaign, where we set out the goal of increasing monthly donations to Masaka Cycling Club. More information on that to follow, but this podcast serves as the perfect starting point to understand and see the work being done there in Masaka. Equality in Cycling | Special Guest - Louise Gibson

“I wanted to make cycling more normal, and the biggest thing is that I’m not ok with the fact that little girls might not have the same opportunities as their brothers, just because they were born a girl… and that is what spurs me on”

In this episode we sit down with the amazing Louise Gibson, who - among many other accolades - was the face UCI’s #choosetochallenge Campaign, which coincided with International Women’s Day. If you have a quick look at Louise’s social media, it doesn’t take long to establish what she is about. For the past few years, Louise along with the amazing Internationelles have been actively flying the flag & standing up for Gender Equality is sport, and in particular in the pro-cycling ranks! Having completed the entire course of the Tour De France in 2019 with her Internationelles squad, and again covering the same distance virtually in 2020, Louise is making her voice heard, and people all over cycling are listening!

A few weeks ago, social media went into meltdown when Louise shared a pie-chart that showed the pay disparity between the Men’s and Women’s winners of the season opener Omloop Het Nieuwsblad - €16,000 for the men and €930. This set in motion a crowdfunding page that raised enough money to ensure the female winner of the following week’s Strade Bianci received the same prize money to the Men’s.

Its actions and stories like this that make this conversation with Louise not only an enjoyable one, but a significant one too.

THE POWER OF HOPE | Masaka Cycling Club Update With Ross Burrage

“One of the most powerful things for a young person from this region is to develop a bit of hope; a bit of hope in their heart…Which might sound a bit dramatic and a long way removed from our lives, but for a young kid there that is living day by day, trying to find a feed, its survival every day there. So to create a bit of hope is the ultimate reason for doing this”

In this latest episode of the G!RO podcast, we check in with our good friend Ross Burrage. Ross started Masaka Cycling Club a couple years back in the Masaka province of Uganda… One of the poorest regions on Earth. His work there and founding of the Masaka Cycle Club Foundation, along with the support of cyclists around the world, is doing significant things in the lives of all involved with the club. G!RO has been supporting Masaka for over a year now, and it is a true honour to be involved in some small capacity.

Having recently partnered with Team Amani, Masaka is taking great strides in developing homegrown cycling talent, with the dreams of seeing its riders compete on the world stage. The impact this would have on the local region is such an exciting prospect, and one that is worth every effort made to support the club.

It was great to sit with Ross again to get the latest update on what is happening on the ground there. And also to hear how we in the UK can support what is happening moving forward. The Power of Collective Action | G!RO Talks to Michael Delagrange of Project Amani

"When someone else - completely outside from me - does something together in this network that benefits everyone, I get this sense of swelling pride that I am part of something bigger. It sounds cliche, but I am a disciple about Collective Action these days... thats the coolest thing about this project so far"

Mikel Delagrange is a Human Rights Lawyer who works at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. Having spent much of the last 10 years in many parts of East Africa, Mikel saw an opportunity to explore the potential of partnering together cycling communities across continents to create and nurture real opportunities for riders in Africa. And so was born Project Amani: An international cycling team that brings together initiatives aimed at enhancing inclusivity in cycling and creating opportunities for riders based in Africa.

As many listeners will know, G!RO has been supporting Masaka Cycling Club in Uganda with Ross Burrage. This last year, Masaka has joined forces with Amani Project as one of its three supported cycling clubs in Africa. We were in turn introduced to Mikel, and it has been an absolute pleasure getting to know him, his work, and what he stands for. Full of humility and vision, Mikel is doing amazing things with Amani, and it is an honour to be involved in someway here at G!RO.

G!RO is stepping up its support of Masaka in 2021 and beyond, and this podcast serves as a good foundation as to the works of Project Amani and its ethos.We really enjoyed this conversation between Jordan and Mikel, and we are sure you will.

Nick Frendo has been a friend of G!RO since we first opened our doors in 2013. With his travel company he hosted a couple of trips for us to Girona, and have run some rides and events with him locally over the years. However in 2017, Nick revealed publicly that in 2016 he had attempted to take his own life - twice. Since then, Nick has become a Mental Health Ambassador for Movember, and has a vision and passion to use his experience and journey to inspire people to get help before they reach a crisis point. Nick founded the AFGO project and more recently Ascnd.cc with a goal to raise money and awareness for mental health and suicide, through rides, challenges, content & conversation.

Host Jordan Addison sits down with Nick Frendo to talk more in detail about his journey and what drives him on to further the work he, Movember and Ascnd.cc are doing. Having known Nick for many years, this is a great conversation, and a timely one. Through Nick's journey which has led to this point, it is clear he has a clarity & resolve about what he and Ascnd can do, and the real impact it can have. The statistics around Suicide is shocking, and more people should know this and talk about it openly in the hope that someone finds the confidence to speak up and not go down that dark path. Race & Diversity In Cycling - G!RO Talks to Special Guest Leon Cerrone

Its fair to say that 2020 has been a year unlike any other. As there appeared to be some light at the end of the tunnel surrounding Covid_19, over in the USA a Black male by the name of George Floyd lost his life at the hands of a white police officer. The events that have unfolded in the wake of this appalling act have been nothing short of extraordinary. In cities across the world, mass groups people of all ages and races have been peacefully protesting this injustice, but significantly are calling for our societies, cultures and authorities to put an end to every form of racism that exists knowingly or unknowingly. The #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement has come to the fore to challenge people from all walks of life to hold a mirror up and see what they understand about racism and White Privilege, to get educated on its realities, and play an active role in championing a world of equality and justice.

Moved and challenged by the events of this past week, Jordan Addison sat down with good friend & fellow cyclist Leon Cerrone to hear of his experiences and thoughts of being a Black male in cycling. Leon took to social media recently to challenge the cycling industry as to whether it is doing enough to see more men and women of colour participate in this sport we all love, as well as to ask if the larger brands who have a bigger voice are speaking up loud enough. It was on this basis that we continued this conversation in the podcast, in what we hope will be one of many more conversations around this very important issue that stretches far beyond cycling.

Moving forward, we hope this conversation can serve as a tool that can begin to plan a route forward that can see cycling - a sport that we deeply love - play its role is bringing and end to racism of any form in our society. Cycling is a sport that by its very nature celebrates and champions community & inclusivity regardless of ability...we all ride the same roads and share the same experiences. We hope that partnerships can be formed moving forward that can see more men and women of colour have access to bikes & this community that we love. G!RO talks to James Golding | 2x Cancer Survivor & World Record Holder

"I was put into a position where i had to fight hard, and i did. I don't believe that i have achieved anything that anyone else couldn't achieve if they wanted"

In 2008 James Golding discovered he had an 11.5 cm tumor in him, and was diagnosed with Cancer. After recovering and riding across the USA, James was diagnosed with cancer again in 2011. 2012, James was given the all clear, and against all the odds has achieved World Records on the bike and is aiming to become the first Briton to win Race Across America.

This week, Jordan Addison sits down with James at his home in Portugal to discuss this remarkable journey in detail, his achievements, his goals, and his passionate message that anyone can overcome the odds to achieve anything. James is a close friend of the cafe, and we love this episode!

G!RO talks to Ross Burrage | Masaka Cycling Club, Uganda & Hidden Athlete Podcast

A few months back, Sarah Hammond introduced us here at G!RO to Ross Burrage who put out a call for some second hand kit for a project he was involved with in Uganda. 8 Large DHL boxed up and shipped to go to the amazing Masaka Cycling Club in the southern part of Uganda. The mission of the club is to offer a platform for men & women to access cycling as a sport, which for the vast majority would be near impossible being one of the poorest parts of the country. Its an amazing project that is having a real & significant impact in the lives of that area.

At the age of 18, most young people may be starting a job, university, or taking a Gap Year with friends. Not this young man. Aged 18. Jimmy Ashby left his home on Adelaide Australia on his Curve GXR with a simple goal. Ride Around the World. In April 2019, aged 20, he returned to his home in Adelaide after 13 months on the road, successful in his quest. He covered a total distance of 39 100km, crossing 32 countries, and raised over $30000 for charity. Alone.
We had crossed paths with Jimmy on his travels when he stopped through the UK during is voyage, and have supported him throughout. Since returning he has been sharing his stories through public speaking engagements and schools. Plus he picked up the highly coveted award of Young Adventurer of the Year by Australian Geographic. We have been looking forward to being able to catch up with him and this week Jordan managed to sit down (via the magic of Skype) with this remarkable young man to hear more of his tales from the road. Jimmy really is a remarkable person, and we have loved watching his journey. This is one we really have been looking forward to, and we hope you guys enjoy it!

G!RO talks to the G!RO Women's Race Team | Women & Cycling

When we first opened our doors in 2013, one of our desires was to break down the barriers that may stop people getting involved in cycling. We wanted to (and still do) find ways to make groups cycling or racing available to all regardless of ability or background. However, the reality is that Cycling has been a largely male dominated sport from the top levels down to grass roots. So what does this mean to women who are involved in cycling or women who want to get involved in cycling.

This week, we sit down with Debs, Michelle, Jo & Daniella who are members of the G!RO Women's Race Team for an open and honest conversation about their journeys as Women in Cycling. We discuss how to build confidence in a largely male dominated sport, some issues they have faced, and discuss some realistic solutions that could pave the way for more women to be involved in a sport that we all love. A true star & very recognisable figure of British Cycling, there isn't much Matt Stephens hasn't achieved. From growing up racing across the UK scene in the 80s & 90s, turning professional & racing all over the world, through to becoming British Road Race National Champion in 1998, & more recently gracing our screens as a commentator & reporter for Eurosport's Cycling Coverage.

We had the chance to sit down with Matt over a coffee here at G!RO to hear first hand what it was like racing in a scene that was a shadow of where we see cycling here in the UK today. Cycling is now a nationally celebrated sport, but for Matt to take the step to turn professional was a lesser trodden path in the 90s. Its clear that Matt still has the same passion now that he had as a youth racing for his local Hemel Hampstead Cycling Club & we loved sitting with him to hear his stories. But for Gus Burrell that is a reality. At the beginning of this year, Gus stepped away from his life in the cycling industry of Melbourne Australia, packed his Curve Kevin of Steel and headed off to Japan, and onwards to Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, through to Europe, Lesotho and awaits his next leg into South America.
