ULTRA RACING IS VERY MUCH FOR ANYONE... Feat. Special Guest Tom Duncan

ULTRA RACING IS VERY MUCH FOR ANYONE... Feat. Special Guest Tom Duncan

"Its very easy to go into these things feeling like an Imposter, but I have to stress this point, that Ultra racing is very much for anyone!"

Good friend of G!RO, Tom Duncan is fresh back from completing Badlands Gravel Race in Spain... a multi day, solo, unsupported Gravel Race through the highlands of Granada, Spain... which was his first ever Ultra Race!

Having recently picked up his @CURVECYCLING Titanium Kevin, Tom had set about getting the bike and himself ready for his first gravel Ultra. In this podcast we delve into what it takes to prepare and execute the race... all whilst managing a high pressure, Full Time job, as well as being a loving Husband and Father. A true 'Average Hero' story Tom shares his learnings from the race and all that led up to it. A great listen, that will hopefully inspire you to step into the world of Ultra.

So sit back, grab a brew & enjoy!

TRANSCONTINENTAL RACE SEND OFF - Special Guest Matt Falconer!

TRANSCONTINENTAL RACE SEND OFF - Special Guest Matt Falconer!

G!RO’s very own ULTRA endurance legend and ice cream extraordinaire, @b1rdmn, popped in for a quick beer and a chat (that we’ve recorded for the podcast) this week ahead of his voyage to Gerardbergen, Belgium for the start of his 5th Transcontinental Race! The podcast has just gone LIVE, and we’ve got a little bike check to go with it here

Enjoy this short little reel where @danny_robertsclarke and @b1rdmn take a quick look at his bike and kit, to give us a feel for exactly what you need to tackle 5000 unsupported km’s across Europe. Onboard his stunning @curvecycling Belgie Ultra, fully setup and rigged up with all his TCR kit, he looks prepared and READY! We’re looking forward to following Matt on this next adventure, dot watching, looking out for his regular updates on instagram and following his very own hashtag for the race #TCRNo8Cap5; and we know a bunch of you guys out there will be doing just the same!

Bon Chance Matt!

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK - Nick Frendo, ASCND.CC

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK - Nick Frendo, ASCND.CC

ROAD TO RESPAIR . The OED has “respair”, both as a noun and verb, meaning the return of hope after a period of despair

Long time Friend of G!RO, Nick Frendo from Ascnd.cc joins us in the Podcast Studio ahead of this week’s Mental Health Awareness Week! Nick is a Mental Health advocate, and his work with Ascnd.cc is having a real & lasting impact across the UK, Europe & beyond.

Mental Health Awareness Week - May 9th-16th - is an annual event when there is an opportunity for the whole of the UK to focus on achieving good mental health. The Mental Health Foundation started the event 21 years ago. Each year the Foundation continues to set the theme, organise and host the week. The event has grown to become one of the biggest awareness weeks across the UK and globally.

This year the focus is Lonliness. Which is a timely reminder to reflect on the happenings of Covid, Lockdown and all that came with it.

Its great to catch up with Nick to hear of how the last couple years have been for him & ASCND, and we also discuss The Mental Health First Aid Course that ASCND is putting on for some of our staff here at G!RO, which is supported by Lucky Saint.

A really impactful listen.

THE FOUNDER'S STORY - Special Guest - Sven Thiele, Hotchillee Cycling

“From the famous cols of the Grand Tours, hitting the Roubaix cobbles, exploring the Atlas Mountains, to riding through game farms in South Africa, we’ve been on some jaw dropping adventures.”

This is nice overview of Hotchillee for many reasons, which we explore in this latest G!RO Podcast!

Podcast host Jordan Addison, sits down with Hotchillee Founder Sven Thiele to explore the beginnings of Hotchillee, and its pioneering approach to cycling events & community. From its first London to Paris event in the early 2000s, to hosting Cycle Races & Tours all over the world, Sven shares his part in the Hotchillee journey, and not straying too far from what it is all about… People & Community.

We also get a look into the struggles and triumphs of running a business in the Cycling Industry, and the impacts the Covid had the business… an events business that could not run events! But this period of time proved to be the most pivotal and positive time in Hotchillee’s journey, paving the way for an exciting future!

A really interesting listen from founder to founder.

Coach's Corner | Training for Ultra with Danny Roberts-Clarke & Matt Falconer

Coach's Corner | Training for Ultra with Danny Roberts-Clarke & Matt Falconer

“A lot of it comes down to forward progress, as long as you are moving forward, you are going to get out of the situation eventually, but if you stop and you stay there, nothing’s going to change.”

In episode 2 of Coach's Corner, Jordan Addison & Jamie Olsson sit down with Cycle Coach & G!RO Sensei Danny Roberts Clarke and Ultra legend Matt Falconer (aka @b1rdmn) to talk all things “training” for ultra. Danny has many years experience coaching athletes & riders of all abilities all around the globe, and in this podcast, by popular demand, we turn his bundle of knowledge towards the crazy world of ultra. We also benefit from some incredible first hand accounts of the experience itself from our mate Matt, as well as finding out how to train for an Ultra, and how important the training is vs other aspects.

When we asked what you guys wanted to hear, this one was by far and away the most requested and we had some great questions submitted for this one too. Regardless of your riding ambitions, the ultra scene always makes for some fascinating stories and we enjoyed recording this one, it’s well worth a listen whether it’s the kind of events you are doing or not.  If you have any questions at all, or if you are looking for coaching be sure to give Danny a shout over at danny@nero.bike

SPECIAL GUEST - Pro Cyclist Rory Townsend

SPECIAL GUEST - Pro Cyclist Rory Townsend

"What I love about cycling is the self improvement nature of it. I know i might not be the most talented rider, as a youth i was so far off it. But i just knew that if I just worked harder than everyone else, it would pay off."

In this latest episode, host Jordan Addison sits down with Rory Townsend, professional cyclist for Ireland & Canyon DHB Sungod respectively. A local to G!RO, born and raised in Surrey, we have seen Rory rise from local races as a junior, to his first professional contract, to representing Ireland at the World Championships in Harrogate 2019.

We really enjoyed speaking with Rory, and hearing his story of how hard work and dedication pays off, and in his case outweighs his natural talent as a junior. Its a great listen that celebrates the journey from Surrey Roads to racing around the World. Rory has aspirations to join a World Tour team, and hopes to represent Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics this year.... and we are fully behind him and wish him every success!

Special Guest Miiro Michael - Founder & Chairman of Masaka Cycling Club.

Special Guest Miiro Michael - Founder & Chairman of Masaka Cycling Club.

"For us, the first aspect is for these girls to build their self-esteem, believe in themselves, believe they can change this world, believe they can be mentors & examples to other young girls."

Since opening G!RO in 2013, we've had the pleasure of meeting some amazing and brilliant people. Miiro Michael of Masaka Cycling Club is quite honestly one of the most inspiring people we have met & it was an absolute pleasure to speak with him on this podcast.

Having suffered with Polio as a child, leaving him with disability, Miiro has had to overcome challenges and adversity throughout his life, and is now a Human Rights activist based in Masaka, Uganda. Seeing the potential and power of cycling, he set up Masaka Cycling Club with the simple goal to see men, women, boys and girls of all ages and all abilities, build their self esteem & allow hope in their lives where previously there had been none.

As well as nurturing the next generation of professional cyclists, Miiro's passion is to see cycling break down social barriers of disability, women's rights, gender based violence & education in Uganda - one bike ride at a time! Miiro is an incredibly inspiring man, and we were honoured to spend some time with him on this podcast.

April sees G!RO launch its Communities Building Communities campaign, where we set out the goal of increasing monthly donations to Masaka Cycling Club. More information on that to follow, but this podcast serves as the perfect starting point to understand and see the work being done there in Masaka. Be sure to check out the previous Masaka podcasts with Ross Burrage & Michael Delagrange. (links below)

For more information about Masaka & how you can support with G!RO, head over to: https://girocycles.com/pages/masaka-cycling-club

An inspiring and significant listen.

In this episode we sit down with the amazing Louise Gibson, who - among many other accolades - was the face UCI’s #choosetochallenge Campaign, which coincided with International Women’s Day. If you have a quick look at Louise’s social media, it doesn’t take long to establish what she is about. For the past few years, Louise along with the amazing Internationelles have been actively flying the flag & standing up for Gender Equality is sport, and in particular in the pro-cycling ranks! Having completed the entire course of the Tour De France in 2019 with her Internationelles squad, and again covering the same distance virtually in 2020, Louise is making her voice heard, and people all over cycling are listening!

A few weeks ago, social media went into meltdown when Louise shared a pie-chart that showed the pay disparity between the Men’s and Women’s winners of the season opener Omloop Het Nieuwsblad - €16,000 for the men and €930. This set in motion a crowdfunding page that raised enough money to ensure the female winner of the following week’s Strade Bianci received the same prize money to the Men’s.

Its actions and stories like this that make this conversation with Louise not only an enjoyable one, but a significant one too.

So sit back, grab a brew & enjoy.

Coach's Corner | The Basics of Training With Power with Danny Roberts-Clarke

Coach's Corner | The Basics of Training With Power with Danny Roberts-Clarke

"The main thing with training is for you to be Consistent, you're not doing too much, you get enough Recovery, you're sleeping well & you're eating well, that's 95% of training. Too much attention gets put on the 1%ers and not enough on what really matters"

In this first episode of Coach's Corner, Jordan Addison & Jamie Olsson sit down with Cycle Coach & G!RO Sensei Danny Roberts Clarke to learn more about the basics of Training With Power on a bike. Danny has many years experience coaching athletes & riders of all abilities all around the globe, and in this podcast we cover some of the basics of Power & here from Jordan and Jamie's experience working with Danny as a coach.

Its a really insightful listen, and one that hopefully many of you will find an interesting dive into all things Power.  If you have any questions at all, or if you are looking for coaching be sure to give Danny a shout over at danny@nero.bike

THE POWER OF HOPE | Masaka Cycling Club Update With Ross Burrage

THE POWER OF HOPE | Masaka Cycling Club Update With Ross Burrage

“One of the most powerful things for a young person from this region is to develop a bit of hope; a bit of hope in their heart…Which might sound a bit dramatic and a long way removed from our lives, but for a young kid there that is living day by day, trying to find a feed, its survival every day there. So to create a bit of hope is the ultimate reason for doing this”

In this latest episode of the G!RO podcast, we check in with our good friend Ross Burrage. Ross started Masaka Cycling Club a couple years back in the Masaka province of Uganda… One of the poorest regions on Earth. His work there and founding of the Masaka Cycle Club Foundation, along with the support of cyclists around the world, is doing significant things in the lives of all involved with the club. G!RO has been supporting Masaka for over a year now, and it is a true honour to be involved in some small capacity.

Having recently partnered with Team Amani, Masaka is taking great strides in developing homegrown cycling talent, with the dreams of seeing its riders compete on the world stage. The impact this would have on the local region is such an exciting prospect, and one that is worth every effort made to support the club.

It was great to sit with Ross again to get the latest update on what is happening on the ground there. And also to hear how we in the UK can support what is happening moving forward. The key area of support of monthly donations of as little as £3 a month! For the price of a cup of coffee, you can contribute to the incredible work Ross and the team are doing. All the details for donations as well as the Jersey Fundraiser can be found here https://girocycles.com/pages/masaka-cycling-club

Please go and support… Every single £ goes to Masaka! We will be keeping you updated as to all the developments as the year goes on.

Also in April we will be launching a Masaka Campaign here in G!RO, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

We loved catching up with Ross, and know you will too.

So sit back, grab a brew & Enjoy!

The Power of Collective Action | G!RO Talks to Michael Delagrange of Project Amani

The Power of Collective Action | G!RO Talks to Michael Delagrange of Project Amani

"When someone else - completely outside from me - does something together in this network that benefits everyone, I get this sense of swelling pride that I am part of something bigger. It sounds cliche, but I am a disciple about Collective Action these days... thats the coolest thing about this project so far"

Mikel Delagrange is a Human Rights Lawyer who works at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. Having spent much of the last 10 years in many parts of East Africa, Mikel saw an opportunity to explore the potential of partnering together cycling communities across continents to create and nurture real opportunities for riders in Africa. And so was born Project Amani: An international cycling team that brings together initiatives aimed at enhancing inclusivity in cycling and creating opportunities for riders based in Africa.

As many listeners will know, G!RO has been supporting Masaka Cycling Club in Uganda with Ross Burrage. This last year, Masaka has joined forces with Amani Project as one of its three supported cycling clubs in Africa. We were in turn introduced to Mikel, and it has been an absolute pleasure getting to know him, his work, and what he stands for. Full of humility and vision, Mikel is doing amazing things with Amani, and it is an honour to be involved in someway here at G!RO.

G!RO is stepping up its support of Masaka in 2021 and beyond, and this podcast serves as a good foundation as to the works of Project Amani and its ethos. We really enjoyed this conversation between Jordan and Mikel, and we are sure you will.

In Pursuit Of Exceptional Coffee | with Special Guest Richard Frazier of WORKSHOP COFFEE

In Pursuit Of Exceptional Coffee | with Special Guest Richard Frazier of WORKSHOP COFFEE

"Showcasing the best coffee possible means working closely with the right coffee farmers, producers, exporters and co-operatives; those that are willing to develop, evolve and adapt as together we target ever-improving quality in the cup"

G!RO has partnered with London based Workshop Coffee for the past 2 or so years as an exclusive coffee provider here at the cafe. We take genuine joy in being able to brew and serve the various offerings from Workshop, and we are always given warm feedback as to the taste and quality of the coffee. Workshop is a very special company, that goes far beyond just being a roaster. The lengths they go to invest in and understand the quality of the coffee, from personal visits to the farms and growers, to honing the meticulous art of roasting each variety is 2nd to none.

We wanted to take a moment to sit down with good friend Richard Frazier, who heads up all things marketing at Workshop, to delve deeper into how the business got started, the various strings to the company, and the efforts and passion behind their pursuit of exceptional coffee.

This was a really interesting conversation to have, and we know you will enjoy it and have a new appreciation for the company and its product.

Be sure to head over to Workshop's website to find out more about the brand, and see the current line up of coffees available. Also you can purchase Workshop Coffee both in store and online at G!RO's website.

How Cycling Can Impact Mental Health & Prevent Suicide | Special Guest Nick Frendo

How Cycling Can Impact Mental Health & Prevent Suicide | Special Guest Nick Frendo

"GLOBALLY 1 MAN DIES EVERY MINUTE FROM SUICIDE. I now want to show people that talking works and you’re not alone."

Nick Frendo has been a friend of G!RO since we first opened our doors in 2013. With his travel company he hosted a couple of trips for us to Girona, and have run some rides and events with him locally over the years. However in 2017, Nick revealed publicly that in 2016 he had attempted to take his own life - twice. Since then, Nick has become a Mental Health Ambassador for Movember, and has a vision and passion to use his experience and journey to inspire people to get help before they reach a crisis point. Nick founded the AFGO project and more recently Ascnd.cc with a goal to raise money and awareness for mental health and suicide, through rides, challenges, content & conversation.

Host Jordan Addison sits down with Nick Frendo to talk more in detail about his journey and what drives him on to further the work he, Movember and Ascnd.cc are doing.  Having known Nick for many years, this is a great conversation, and a timely one. Through Nick's journey which has led to this point, it is clear he has a clarity & resolve about what he and Ascnd can do, and the real impact it can have. The statistics around Suicide is shocking, and more people should know this and talk about it openly in the hope that someone finds the confidence to speak up and not go down that dark path. We commend Nick for his efforts and we stand with him in this cause to prevent suicides and champion mental health. Chapeau Nick.

So sit back, grab a brew & enjoy!

The Power Of Ultra | Special Guests Sarah Hammond & Jesse Carlsson

The Power Of Ultra | Special Guests Sarah Hammond & Jesse Carlsson

"By my second race the unknown wasn’t a driver anymore, instead it was clear that racing for me is about an escape from the noise of day-to-day life. The simplicity of stepping away from everything. How often do we get a chance to take a holiday from our life? Sure it may be physically difficult racing, but all we are really doing is looking for food, water and shelter. There are no work deadlines, no social obligations, no chores and there’s often no phone connection. You are free to just ride and you do not have to attend to anything but the task at hand. At the end of the day I’m fortunate to be able to ride and race, seeing parts of the world I never imagined. There is no better way to explore the world than on a bicycle"

Excerpt from Touring With A Sense Of Urgency by Jesse Carlsson & Sarah Hammond

Host Jordan Addison was able to sit down this week with two people that know more about Ultra Riding & Racing than most others, Sarah Hammond & Jesse Carlsson. Safely back in Melbourne during this lockdown, Jesse and Sarah have spent most of the last year in remote parts of Australia, having given away all they had, and packed all that was left on their bikes to hit the road. During this time they have penned and published their book 'Touring With a Sense Of Urgency - A Comprehensive Guide To Bikepacking', which is a culmination of years of experience and lessons in the world of Ultra Riding, now shared with us the readers.

Jesse - who is one of the founders of Curve - and Sarah have an impressive palmares between them, including wins in the TransAm Bike Race & Multiple wins in Race to the Rock, to name but a few. But the stats & figures of their achievements on the bike quickly give way to the bigger question of 'Why?'. Why do these races? Why push yourself to the limits? Why pack your entire life on a bike and live wild with no time limits and be free? It is these questions that we explore in this podcast and the conversations that follow.

So sit back, grab a brew & enjoy!

Race & Diversity In Cycling - G!RO Talks to Special Guest Leon Cerrone

Race & Diversity In Cycling - G!RO Talks to Special Guest Leon Cerrone

Its fair to say that 2020 has been a year unlike any other. As there appeared to be some light at the end of the tunnel surrounding Covid_19, over in the USA a Black male by the name of George Floyd lost his life at the hands of a white police officer. The events that have unfolded in the wake of this appalling act have been nothing short of extraordinary. In cities across the world, mass groups people of all ages and races have been peacefully protesting this injustice, but significantly are calling for our societies, cultures and authorities to put an end to every form of racism that exists knowingly or unknowingly. The #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement has come to the fore to challenge people from all walks of life to hold a mirror up and see what they understand about racism and White Privilege, to get educated on its realities, and play an active role in championing a world of equality and justice.

Moved and challenged by the events of this past week, Jordan Addison sat down with good friend & fellow cyclist Leon Cerrone to hear of his experiences and thoughts of being a Black male in cycling. Leon took to social media recently to challenge the cycling industry as to whether it is doing enough to see more men and women of colour participate in this sport we all love, as well as to ask if the larger brands who have a bigger voice are speaking up loud enough. It was on this basis that we continued this conversation in the podcast, in what we hope will be one of many more conversations around this very important issue that stretches far beyond cycling.

Moving forward, we hope this conversation can serve as a tool that can begin to plan a route forward that can see cycling - a sport that we deeply love - play its role is bringing and end to racism of any form in our society. Cycling is a sport that by its very nature celebrates and champions community & inclusivity regardless of ability...we all ride the same roads and share the same experiences. We hope that partnerships can be formed moving forward that can see more men and women of colour have access to bikes & this community that we love. We would love to hear your thoughts on this, so please reach out and get in touch.

So sit back, grab a brew and enjoy!

Anyone who has run an independent business will know the level of passion, effort & sacrifice needed to run it day to day. And running a business in the cycling industry can be particularly intense as the high street is continually changing as is our interaction with online in retail and engagement. But cycling is a beautiful sport & lifestyle that can draw out a passion and a drive to overcome challenges and obstacles for the opportunity work in an industry that you love and care for.

G!RO talks to the G!RO Women's Race Team | Women & Cycling

When we first opened our doors in 2013, one of our desires was to break down the barriers that may stop people getting involved in cycling. We wanted to (and still do) find ways to make groups cycling or racing available to all regardless of ability or background. However, the reality is that Cycling has been a largely male dominated sport from the top levels down to grass roots. So what does this mean to women who are involved in cycling or women who want to get involved in cycling.

This week, we sit down with Debs, Michelle, Jo & Daniella who are members of the G!RO Women's Race Team for an open and honest conversation about their journeys as Women in Cycling. We discuss how to build confidence in a largely male dominated sport, some issues they have faced, and discuss some realistic solutions that could pave the way for more women to be involved in a sport that we all love.  We would love to keep the conversation going, so please email your thoughts over to rides@girocycles.com
