How to tell FAMILY about Jesus with Rev. Ronnie D. Simmons

How to tell FAMILY about Jesus with Rev. Ronnie D. Simmons

Pastor Ronnie D. Simmons of the House of Faith Christian Center in Smyrna, Tennessee takes a unique approach to witnessing to family.

He reviews the ABCs of Salvation (found on page 55 of his book, "3 Bs That Do Not Sting! The 3-Step Process to Christian Discipleship)":

Step A - Admit that you are a sinner and that you deserve to die for your sins. "You are a sinner, not because you sin, but you sin, because you are a sinner."

Step B - Believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for you and now you are willing to repent of all your sins.

Step C - Confess Jesus as your Lord.

Pastor Simmons stresses the necessity of telling family about Jesus, saying "It's important and we have to do it. It is not the church's responsibility to witness to the family; it's the family's responsibility to witness to the family."

He says there are three roadblocks or hinderances to sharing the Good News of Christ with family:

1. Some people don't want to talk about it and try to bypass the situation altogether.

2. Some people attempt to talk about Jesus with family but the information they have is incorrect. Often, these people talk about feelings or what they heard. Their perception of God is incorrect and they give out misinformation.

3. Some people have incomplete information and in sharing leave out key or essential facts, leaving the family frustrated or discouraged.

His advice is to get to know Jesus first by reading what He says in the Bible, what he taught, commanded and promised. This information will give clarity to who God is. He concludes that when we "come to Jesus, hear what he has to say and then go do it" our paths become straight, our concerns and problems dissolve.

"When Jesus says something in the Bible, that's His faith. Every time He speaks He's speaking His faith. When I say what Jesus says, now it becomes my faith," said Pastor Simmons.

Scriptures to review:

John 1:17; 14: 4-9; 17:25-26

Matthew 11:27-28

Colossians 1: 15

Acts 10

Romans 10: 9-10, 17

Millennial Minute with Bianca Shante and Dominic Lyon

Millennial Minute with Bianca Shante and Dominic Lyon

Two Christian young people, Bianca Shante and Dominic Lyon talk with Emunah hosts Tamara and Charisse about a myriad of concerns, ranging from mental health and seeing Results in their Christian walk to various ways to avoid compromise in this age of multiple temptations.

"There's a sense of urgency and a level of demand that society puts on us: where we should be in life; what we should have accomplished; and, a lot of the times our lives don't reflect that," Bianca said. Dominic said: "When folk try to do things for the love of money, they can slip into a depression."

See what else these two young people have to say.

We also encourage you to visit earlier episodes of Millennial Minute. The first episode on December 8, 2023 featured Bianca. The second Millennial Minute featured Dominic on Jan. 9, 2024.

Forgiveness Part 2: What forgiveness is NOT!

Forgiveness Part 2: What forgiveness is NOT!

Continuing the poignant discussion that began in Part I, Bro. D and Min. Eugene Howie of First Baptist Church of Glenarden International consider what forgiveness is not. When you forgive, are you to gloss over or deny the seriousness of an offense against You? Though you can help repair a damaged relationship, does it obligate you to reconcile with the person who harmed you?

Other questions are: Why must we forgive? How do we forgive?

Bro. D. and Min. Howie share their favorite Bible verses about forgiveness and reasons why they were selected.

Here are other applicable Bible verses:

-We forgive as the Lord forgave us: Colossians 3:13 amplified - "bearing graciously with one another, and willingly forgiving each other if one has a cause for complaint against another; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so should you forgive."

-We forgive by faith, out of obedience (feelings have little to do with it): Hebrews 11:1 NLT - "Faith shows the reality of what we hope for: it is the evidence of things we cannot see."

-Our decision to forgive must include a change of heart: Philippians 1:6 NLT - "And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns."

-We can pray and ask God to deal with the injustices. We can trust God to judge that person's life, and then we ought to leave that prayer at the altar: Luke 6: 37 NIV - "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven."

As you know listeners, the goal of Emunah is to help believers live lives that honor God. We hope that you meditate on the scriptures and advice of these two God-anointed disciples of Christ. Application is key; pray about the ways God is leading you to forgive and then take small steps toward resolution.

Bible Lesson: Passing the Baton

Bible Lesson: Passing the Baton

Emunah Podcast hosts Tamara and Charisse were invited by Elder Jean Hopper King of Oliver Spring, TN and Apostle Victoria Lockhart of Jersey City, N.J. to present a Bible lesson for their group, Restore, Refocus and Refresh. RR&R is another way to refer to their monthly 12-day Bible Study. The March theme was mentoring - or how older believers must prepare the youth for the future. We hope you enjoy our teaching and find one or two valuable nuggets.

Of the many barriers between the young and old today, Charisse and I selected "conflicting agendas" and reviewed the Bible lesson in 1 Kings 12. King Solomon is dead and his son Rehoboam is ready to take over the throne. He consults both his father's elderly advisers and his own young counselors. Whose advise do you think he took?

Here are two points that were made:

1. Wisdom is essential when addressing the needs of the youth and the elderly.

2. Both the elderly and young must discard agendas and look only to God for answers.

RR&R meets each month for the first 12 days at 6 a.m. The Dial In # is 774-267-7513. Elder King and Apostle Lockhart were guests of Emunah on Feb. 23, 2024. They talked about the importance of Bible Study and why the unique approach of RR&R works.

We encourage feedback. Our email is wordconsultingllc@gmail.com. You also can post your testimony on our website: https://wordconsultingllc.com.

We'd love to hear from you.

Sermon-based Study: The Villages at Alfred Street

Sermon-based Study: The Villages at Alfred Street

The Rev. Dr. Zina Jacque is the assistant to the Pastor for Small Groups at the historic Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA. She oversees a relatively new study approach where members gather in what are called “Villages” to discuss how to apply the various sermons to their lives in a way that they grow spiritually and see their lives transformed. Information and copies of the curriculum or study guides can be found: https//alfredstreet.org/village.

Summary

Villages@Alfred Street provide fellowship, space to learn through dialogue and practical ways to strengthen members. The original vision was to create a church where everyone is connected in family, growing in their faith, and supported towards their future. It offers an opportunity for every member of Alfred Street to move from crowd to community and get connected as theywould in a small church.

“This is a silly analogy, but it works,” said the Rev. Dr. Zina Jacque. “Remember the sit-com “Cheers” where ‘everybody knows your name and they’re glad you came’? That’s what underneath Village. You can come to worship on Sunday and, unless you sit with people who know you, folk will ‘pass the peace,’ and there might not be any meaningful exchange. Village is a space where the same 10, 15, 20 people gather in person or virtually to pray together, to study together, where ‘everybody knows your name and they’re glad you came.’”

Serving God as a Couple

Serving God as a Couple

Melvin and Voncille Greene of Glenn Dale, Maryland have been married 12 ½ years and, for four years, have hosted the TV show “Living A Godly Marriage, which airs three times a week in Prince George’s County where they live.

Listen to them enthusiastically share insights and strategies for keeping God at the center of marriage.

The Greenes describe their marriage as a “divine union” and insist that marriage is a “covenant,” not a contract.

Here is how they break it down:
1. A Covenant is based on trust and faith.
A Contract is based on mistrust and fear.
2. A Covenant’s object is to please God.
A Contract is to please and protect self.
3. A Covenant is based on your spouse’s interest and needs.
A Contract is based on your own interests and needs.
4. A Covenant’s goal is to give.
A contract’s goal is to get.
5. A Covenant is based on sacrifice.
A Contract is based on convenience.
6. A marriage Covenant is for a lifetime.
A Contract is for a limited time.
7. A Covenant cannot be broken.
A Contract can be broken.
8. A Covenant is an unconditional commitment.
A Contract is conditional.
9. A Covenant is based on grace.
A Contract is based on the law.
10. A Contract is consummated by both parties signing.
A Covenant is consummated by the shedding of blood.

“That’s a big thing too. Commitment. It’s not a ‘let’s try this out,’” Melvin Greene says.

Millennial Minute: Is Christian hip hop healthy for young adults?

Millennial Minute: Is Christian hip hop healthy for young adults?

Minister Larisha Warner and Dominic Lyon are new guests on the Millennial

Minute series that started this second season of Emunah. They talk about the

challenges of getting peers to accept Christ as well as their struggles to live for

Christ. And, the two weigh in on whether Christian Hip Hop is a genre of music

that is healthy for millennials searching for new avenues of entertainment.

The greatest challenges to millennials today:

Larisha: “accepting or believing that God still loves them in spite of past sins and

the things they’ve gone through.”

Dominic: “Our struggle is the crowd that’s around us, the environment that we’re

in.”

If you could describe the gospel in one sentence for a millennial, what would you

say?

Dominic: “The gospel in one sentence is the Blueprint for life.”

Larisha: “The Good News that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He died for your

sins. He rose again, and because of Him, there is no condemnation for those who

believe in Him but only everlasting joy.”

Both Larisha and Dominic are enthusiastic disciples of Christ.

Dominic was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He is a student at the University

of Maryland Baltimore County and has aspirations of becoming a politician, even

President of the United States. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of

Glenarden International in Landover, Maryland.

Larisha is a native of Prince George’s County, a suburb of the nation’s capital. With

both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, she is an active member of the House of

Healing under the leadership of Pastor and co-Pastor Joseph and LaQuisha Brown

in Capitol Heights, Maryland. She has her own ministry, Divinely Destined

Ministries.

She is the author of the book “The Journey to Freedom, Healing & Wholeness.

If you are interested in buying her book, it can be found at both Amazon and

Thriftbooks. Here is a brief synopsis of the book:

The Journey to Freedom, Healing, and Wholeness book serves is one of concentration, devotion, and

commitment to fulfilling one's life journey. Larisha’s story is one of hope, grace, and determination to freedom.

Her life journey has endured countless hurdles and trials including experiencing sexual abuse/molestation at a

young age she remains optimistic and has always credited God for leading, guiding and seeing her through it

all. This book is a reflection of her unwavering dependence on God. With God's help, she made up her mind to continue sharing His message of love and hope to all.

She is of a firm belief that the very same One who turned her life around can do same with anyone and everyone. Determined to help others overcome pain and grief, she finds expression in God's endless love and

support all through her journey. This autobiography of Larisha Y. Warner is a must read for all who desires to see the faithfulness of God amidst hardships.

The Christian Hip Hop songs used in the podcast are:

“Yahweh” and “We get fit for the fight that’s coming.” These are newly dropped by

Christian Jargon

Christian Jargon

Do you know what a “love offering is” or what it means to be “washed in the blood?” Hosts Tamara and Charisse tackle the complicated subject of Christian jargon and pledge to weed out as much jargon as possible from their episodes.

Jargon is defined as “special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand.” Jargon also can be thought of as “shoptalk.”

Both Emunah hosts agreed that whenever believers and church leaders talk about Christ there should be a concerted effort to communicate in plain, simple English. In John 16:25, Jesus tells his disciples “I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way but will tell you plainly about the Father. “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.”

Our goal at Emunah is to build a community of listeners who are seeking sound Bible-based teachings and thought-provoking discussions focused on developing a life with Jesus. Jargon needs to be weeded from a lot of habits and traditions in our churches and Christian-based groups today. The podcast discusses a few favored, indecipherable terms and phrases, here are a few others that are frequently used:

  • Worldly – used to describe anything in society that does not include God, His plans or his commandments. (1 John 2:15-17)

  • Salvation/Being saved – refers to being saved or rescued from the consequences of sin by having our sins forgiven. The consequence of sin is death. Through forgiveness we are reconciled to God and our past sins will not be counted against us. Grace alone provides this kind of salvation and it frees us from our sinful nature with the help of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 5: 9-10)

  • Sin – anything that goes against God’s will and His laws.

  • Pure heart – means that you do not agree with any sinful or impure thoughts that come to mind. You deny these thoughts, erasing them so they won’t affect or taint your thoughts. (Psalm 51:10; Matthew 5:8; and, Proverbs 4:23)

  • The old man/new man – Your “old man” is your mindset before you accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior. It is a state of allowing your desires to rule in your life, regardless of the consequences. The “new man” is your mindset after conversion, a decision to allow the Holy Spirit to help you overcome sin and live in righteousness and holiness. It is the mind to serve God and His will, rather than your will. (Colossians 3: 9-10)

ASK THE GIRLS! Interracial relationships/dating

ASK THE GIRLS! Interracial relationships/dating

The Ask the Girls episodes began in Season 1 and now are a favored feature in Emunah’s Second Season. Oklahoma sisters Yasmine and Jazlyn point youthful eyes on the controversial topic of interracial dating and relationships. The animated discussion yielded to 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 and Psalms 139:4. Here is The Message Bible’s version of 2 Corinthians 6:14-18:

Don’t become partners with those who reject God. How can you make a partnership out of right and wrong? That’s not partnership; that’s war. Is light best friends with dark? Does Christ go strolling with the Devil? Do trust and mistrust hold hands? Who would think of setting up pagan idols in God’s holy Temple? But that is exactly what we are, each of us a temple in whom God lives. God himself put it this way:

“I’ll live in them, move into them;    I’ll be their God and they’ll be my people. So leave the corruption and compromise;    leave it for good,” says God.“Don’t link up with those who will pollute you.    I want you all for myself.I’ll be a Father to you;    you’ll be sons and daughters to me.”The Word of the Master, God.

Sixteen-year-old Yasmine is a high school sophomore and her sister, Jazlyn, is in middle school, 6th grade. They attend a predominantly white school (PWI). Both are very active in school and in their Baptist church in Oklahoma.

Jazlyn gives this advice on how to maneuver at a PWI: “Just be yourself … If you are yourself, maybe [the students, black and white] are interested [in you]. If not that means they are not really real friends. If you start off with showing your true self, you can see who your real friends are.”

Ask the Girls! Episodes also include segments that look at ways to follow the Bible’s teachings and commandments in everyday situations and dissect scenarios involving parental decision making.

Join the sisters; see if you agree or disagree with their opinions and then let us know at wordconsultingllc@gmail.com or https://wordconsultingllc.com. Do you have ideas on a particular segment you would like to see the girls tackle?

Rev. Ronnie Simmons shares insights into his book, "3 Bs that Do Not Sting

Rev. Ronnie Simmons shares insights into his book, "3 Bs that Do Not Sting

In the first book for Pastor Simmons, he talks about the three-step process to successful Christian Discipleship WITHOUT loading it with indecipherable religious lingo. Instead, he challenges simple ideas and statements we often make, like: ”I’m a good person, and I believe in God, therefore I hope to go to heaven when I die.” He says we all must become a BE-liever, a Be-longer and a Be-comer.

Both in his book and in this podcast, Pastor Ronnie explains the processes in depth.

The book can be found on Amazon and through Ronnie Simmons Ministries (RSM), which is the outreach of the church he co-founded with his wife Terrie. The House of Faith Christian Center in Smyrna, TN, began in 1992, about 12 years after he began his journey in the ministry.

Millennial Minute with Bianca Shante and Tiffany

Millennial Minute with Bianca Shante and Tiffany

Stay Woke is an episode that challenges statistics that show Millennials have abandoned their Christian faith. Tiffany and Bianca discuss how their faith in Christ has helped them but drill down on the things traditional Christianity lacks. Tune in. See if you agree.

Both Bianca and Tiffany are residents of the Washington, D.C. area, popularly known as theDMV, (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia).

They debunk statistics that show people between the ages of 27 and 34 are considerably less religious than older Americans. One survey adds: 44% say religion is important to them; 37% say it is not. So that also means millennials are less attached to organized religion. Both young women tell how their faith in Christ helped them as millennials. Tiffany has been a believer – meaning that she has accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior – for about 10 years.

Bianca says she recommitted her life to Christ in February 2023.

“I look at my faith in Christ as my anchor,” Bianca says. “So as life gets deep, there are storms… Christ is my anchor through it all. … I realize that social media are huge temptations to have us compare our lives. But in Christ, I recognize His plan (for us) doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s plan.”

Both addressed the question: “What do you see traditional Christianity lacking?

“I think Christianity or the church as a whole is missing RESULTS,” Tiffany said. “I’m looking at it from the angle that we have so many lowercase “g” gods in this world and that we have silenced the Holy Ghost. We have quenched the Holy Spirit. We have not allowed Him to freely flow as He once did. And so, I think, because we have done that, we are not really seeing the power of God move.”

The episode ends with the women reacting to comments actor Denzel Washington made during a commencement speech at Dillard University about six years ago. Listen in and be blessed.

Ask the Girls!

Ask the Girls!

Ask the Girls! is a series that started in Season 1. In this new season 2, Oklahoma sisters Yasmine and Jazlyn discuss their relationship with God in fun and interactive conversations, including giving a Christian perspective of the popular Barbie Movie.

Yasmine is a high school student and her sister, Jazlyn, is in middle school in Oklahoma City, OK. In the podcast, they share favorite Scriptures that have helped them through tough times in school and with friends. They have special segments, including “Ya or Nay”, “What would you do?” or “If I were in your shoes,” that explore ways to operate in situations like dating, telling the truth and showing honesty.

Here is Jazlyn’s take on the Barbie Movie:

“What Barbie really says is you gotta take power in your own self and tell yourself that you’re good enough.… You gotta find your own self. Don’t try to fit in with a group. Just really be yourself.”

And in a more controversial topic, the girls look at racism.

“There are people who claim they are Children of God and call you the N word in the same sentence,” Yasmine said.

Exalting Jesus in Judges and Ruth

Exalting Jesus in Judges and Ruth

Season 2 of Emunah opens with a powerful discussion with the Rev. Dr. Eric Redmond of The Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Redmond tells how his commentary on Judges and Ruth reveals who God is and how Jesus is exalted.

Judges speaks to today because in the past and today “everyone did whatever seemed right to him” or her. Ruth’s story shows how a sovereign God loves his own by means of tragedy.

The complete title of Redmond’s book is Christ-Centered Exposition: Exalting Jesus in Judges and Ruth.

“I want you to fall in love with God as he reveals himself in the pages of

Scripture,” Redmond says in the preface of his book. “Therefore, I must allow each text to tell us what its central idea is and how that idea is meaningful to the obedient walk of believers individually and corporately. As we let each text show us what it is saying, we will be taught, rebuked, corrected, and trained in the righteousness that pleases the Lord with respect to the central idea in each passage.”

Join us as he takes us along a spirited route through his commentary that can be found at The Moody Bible Institute bookstore, Christianbook.com and, or course, Amazon.

Two earlier Emunah podcast episodes focus on his books “Say It?” on June 9, 2023 in episode 8 and “Where are all the brothers?”, episode 9 on June 16. Rev. Redmond is professor of Bible at the Moody Bible Institute, and associate pastor of Preaching, Teaching and Care at Calvary Memorial Church in Oak Park, Illinois. He and his wife, Pamela, live in Winfield, IL. Redmond also is a Teaching Fellow for the C.S. Lewis Institute-Chicago, and a fellow of the Center for Pastor Theologians..

Emunah's first episode

Emunah's first episode

Co-hosts Tamara and Charisse introduce themselves, explain the purpose of Emunah and launch into a discussion about the Identity Crisis many African Americans have when it comes to the Bible.

During the period of American slavery, the Bible was used as a weapon to justify the cruel facts of selling and abusing Africans brought to U.S. shores illegally. Christian slaveholders nitpicked through more than three quarters of a million words in the Bible to justify their illegal acts.

Abolitionist Frederick Douglass said: “Between the Christianity of this land and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference—so wide that to receive the one as good, pure, and holy, is of necessity to reject the other as bad, corrupt, and wicked.

The Emunah co-hosts encourage a mind reset in this first episode so listeners can enjoy all the wonderful promises embedded in God’s Holy word.
