#82. Alive Until Expired

#82. Alive Until Expired

Yesterday  I was talking to a  dear friend.

She celebrated her 80th a while ago.

A wise, talented, intelligent woman. A woman that you’d feel privileged to include in your circle of friends.

She apologised for wearing a sleeveless top.

It’s too hot, she said.

I asked why is she apologising, and she said ,she can’t show her arms “like that”.

 She meant  flabby arms.

It made me sad. Women of this calibre need to hide something that has to do with their appearance because it’s not up to the public standard?

What is this standard?  I wanted to shout.

Something that looks like a young arm?

Is there an age limit or body appearance limit, that women are allowed to show in public, and hide the rest?

And who decides what this limit is ?

 A panel of young people?

Or maybe Children?

Or elders who feel they need to apologise for looking their age ?

Society in its best is  made of all ages.

From babies to old people.

Each one in its development stage is contributing to the whole.

Everyone is needed. Every one of us is a colour or a shade in a rainbow of human existence.

You were young once,  and then you grew into an adult and after that you grew old.

Do you need to apologise for this?

Do you need to cover it up?

Do you need to be approved for  the way you look?

This phenomenon of anti-ageing, what is it about?

Why are we trying to get rid of ageing?

Why are we fighting it?

We want to age without ageing.

We want to age pretending we are still young.

Why not embracing the process of ageing?

Society will change their attitude towards old age, when elders will change their  attitude towards themselves.

#81. Grief and Love

#81. Grief and Love

In the first stages of my grief I made a decision to experience it all; every emotion and feeling that came in the package of grief and loss.

I didn’t want to run away from it. Something in me knew that if I ran away, this monster will catch me at some point in the future.  I knew it was unavoidable.

I sort of knew, that I’d rather experience it in real time, while it’s there, fresh… raw… cruel… fierce…uncompromising….

So, I made a place and space for grief, for pain. for cry, for anger and disbelief.

Now, from a vintage point of 2 yrs. + 7 months I can see that among the parts that make who I am, there was a wise old woman who knew how to guide all the other parts.

And while I was “away” crying the pain of a lost child, moaning the agony  of the maiden, wailing the woman who lost her lover, and lamented the woman who wanted to get old side by side with her  beloved, she – the wise old one – was holding me in her arms, waiting with love and permission to feel it all. As long as it takes...

She knew... She who knows.

We are brought up to believe that life is made of right or wrong, good or bad, ugly or beautiful, black or white.

And if so – there’s grief or love, sorrow or joy.

So, in order to live “normal” life you have to “move on from grief”.

These are WRONG messages.  They have nothing to do with the real raw experience of grief.

I discovered that love and grief are not either or.

They are inseparable.

A few days ago, on our 50th anniversary day,I renewed my vow.

My vow to love with all my heart. To live my life from the heart. With the heart. And for the heart.

#80. Let's Talk About Competition

#80. Let's Talk About Competition

Let’s talk about competition

When we look at competition and its meaning, we come across words like:

·     Scarcity mentality

·     Defeating

·     Superiority

·     Supremacy

·     Opposition

We are conditioned to compare and compete.

We are raised to be individualistic.

The downside of competition is that we don’t compete WITH someone. We compete AGAINST someone.

When it comes to ART, can you judge art? can you judge beauty?

Competition ignores the history and the story of a person.

Children’s competition is my main concern.

What message we give children by sending them to competitions?

And there’s another side to the question of competition:

Wanting to be like somebody else could hint towards your golden shadow.

Deep inside, you might have a talent that hasn’t had its chance to reveal itself.

Your desire to have what another person is having ,might be a projection of a hidden talent you possess.

This is how competition could turn into inspiration.

And then there’s competing with our selves, which is a different aspect of competition.

You can  strive to do better every day, and thus you  can develop, expand, grow and explore more of who and what you are.

#79. On Communication & Connection

#79. On Communication & Connection

Seeing people around me glued to their telephones prompted me to think about communication and connection.

Communication and connection are not the same.

Communication is the first step but not the last.

Most of us today suffer today from lack of connection.

Music connects.

Making music connects us with our hearts.

Playing with others connects us to ourselves and to each other.

You don’t have to be professional players in order to do it; you don't even need to play well...

We need to develop the awareness to the way we use devices and screens.

If we connect to each other at least as much as we connect to our devices, we'd be happier.

A short moment of connection creates a huge change in people’s hearts and brains.

#78. Suzuki Way & Working Parents

#78. Suzuki Way & Working Parents

What can we do and how do we practice when both parents  are working parents?

The question was asked by a Suzuki Teacher. It’s a question asked by many parents and teachers, as in Suzuki way parental involvement is necessary.

In this episode we’ll try to answer it by tuning into:

·      Creating the desire

·      Practising with joy

·      Practice is integral for home environment

·      No skill can be developed without practice.

Let’s reflect  on how we can create practice environment when parents are working.

#77. Stop - Breathe- Wonder

#77. Stop - Breathe- Wonder

As the year draws to an end, many people are doing their new year resolution.

This invited me to ponder on the topic.

New year resolution is a plan; a decision we take about the coming year; a commitment.

It is a plan.

So, what happens when something goes out of the plan?

What do we do when we didn’t do what we had planned or promised to do?

And are we always trying to “fix’ ourselves in these new year resolutions?

𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒓𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒇o𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓?

We could do an end of year celebration instead.

We could celebrate ourselves and the year that has passed.

Even if it was rough and tough, we could still celebrate the way we handled it.

Let’s reflect on 2023 and congratulate ourselves for it.

Time to Stop, breathe and wonder.

#76. But I Don't Want to Practice !!

#76. But I Don't Want to Practice !!

How many times have you heard the above statement, when you invited your child to do her/his practice? I bet more than once.

“Every child loves to play,  but most children don’t like to practice.” Haruko Kataoka

There are many reasons why children don’t want to practice;

some of them we might be able to change.

We'll explore some of them in this episode.

I truly believe that when parents pay attention to these points, their children become more willing to do the work.

I’ve seen it time and time again throughout my years of teaching.

#75. In Praise of Praise

#75. In Praise of Praise

“We should say to children: You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the world, there is no other child exactly like you ... You have the capacity for anything... You must cherish one another. We must all work to make this world worthy of its children." (Pablo Casals)

We all need to be seen. We can’t live in a vacuum.

We need to feel we are on the right track especially when we step into unfamiliar territory. At any age, we need to know we are witnessed and noticed.

In this episode we explore:

  • Why we praise
  • How to praise effectively
  • Is praise always effective or could it also be harmful

#69. Suzukicast -But First Comes the Listening

Listening is  one of  the most important components in Suzuki Talent Education program.

Even if it seems to be the easiest task, it’s too often neglected.

Why is  listening so important?

And why we neglect it so often?

Are you convinced that listening is important?

Have you created a habit of listening?

How much listening should we do?

How should we  listen?

When should we listen?

Which recording should you listen to?

What device should you use?

Do or don’t we listen enough?

How to make listening a habit?

All of these and more in this episode of “But first comes the listening”.

#66. Pearls and Lemons

#66. Pearls and Lemons

Life gives us lemons, and sometimes life gives us pearls.

Things in life go in pairs: love and grief, light and dark, gain and loss etc.

It's only  natural that  we prefer the “good” side.

When we go through difficult times, we tend to not show our sadness. We prefer instead to go to our cave.

In the past we used to be surrounded by a tribe that supported us in times like these.

Now we more often find ourselves lonely.

The  cave turns out to be a cage .

How can we help people who go through hardships ,without trying to fix it for them?

We can always offer our PRESENCE.  We can simply be there for them.

In our presence we don’t have to DO anything.

Being present heals us and them at the same time.

( And watch for where you put your telephone when you meet a friend...Hopefully in your bag and not on the table).

Be gentle with offering help ( especially when not asked,) and be generous with offering your presence.

#58. Educating Heart and Soul

#58. Educating Heart and Soul

Changes in the world and life will continue to occur and accelerate.

Since it is difficult to keep up with the pace of change, it might be a good idea to re-evaluate and learn what is important to keep and what we could  let go of.

Meeting children and parents in different countries, re- informed and confirmed for me the important things in life.

How can we get “education changed from mere instruction to education in the real sense of the word.  “(Shinichi Suzuki)

Educating the heart and soul of a child, of all children in the world, through music.

In these changing times, we need to ask ourselves:

- What are the things that are beyond fad?

- What are the values that humanity could not survive without them?

- What is in the core of being human?

Children and adults alike, cannot live without love.

The need to love and be loved is existential.

Children love to learn; this too is an existential need.

In order to survive we need to learn.

All of us feel loved when we are seen and listened to.

How can we give more by doing less.

#51. A Seed is Planted in the Earth

#51. A Seed is Planted in the Earth

"Every child has an unlimited potential", Dr Shinichi Suzuki

So, how do we motivate children to do their work - practice their instrument, do their homework, help in the house etc.

Do we need to motivate them?

Anything we learn needs encouragement and acknowledgement, in order to make us want to repeat it.

When we want our children to have the desire to do learn, play and practice, we have to reflect on  our role in it.

Love and desire are necessary  to acquire ability.

The thirst to learn is innate in every child. We don't need to create it, but we need to make sure we don't harm it.

How can we allow it to grow and continue to develop?

Self motivation might be the key here. Self motivation comes with self discipline.

When children become self motivated it transfer to other areas in their life. It becomes a part of their character.

" Man is a son of his environment", Shinichi Suzuki.

If art and  music are in the environment , children will naturally  absorb the love for it.

When a parent asks, "how can I help my child love doing this", the answer will be, " love it yourself".

The way you approach the practice will be the way your child approaches the practice.

Like what you want your child to like. Invest the love, and trust that it will be in the heart of your child.

One of my favourite quotes:

“A seed is planted in the earth. We don’t see when the germination begins. That is the doing of Mother Nature. We have to wait patiently. We cannot dig up the seed to see wheatear it is really growing; to do so would be to destroy everything. Suddenly a bud appears. What a joy and pleasure to watch it grow! At the same time the root, unseen in the ground, is getting stronger and has the power to produce a big, sturdy tree”. (Shinichi Suzuki, Nurtured by Love)

Love and nurture the seed with curiosity and wait to marvel in the flower or tree.

Don't judge day by day. keep the big picture in your heart. Believe in your child.

#46.Living in a Circle -with Moana Pearl

#46.Living in a Circle -with Moana Pearl

Today I’m in conversation with Moana Pearl.

Moana is a culture activist, ritual maker, mother and dreamer of a new paradigm.  She supports women to reclaim and remember their inherent relationship to Earth, spirit and the Sacred Feminine. For decades she has been involved with women's circles, as a facilitator, educator, and participant.

This is how I first met her, many years ago in a women’s retreat.

As a family counsellor, menstrual educator, and community builder her deep connection with the natural world is reflected in a grounded and compassionate approach to life’s challenges.

Moana offers programs for mothers and their adolescent daughters, to welcome young girls into womanhood.

She offers workshops and mentoring  for women's personal development.

Inspired by the connections between psychology, physiology and cultural influences, and the spaces in between, Moana provides a space for nurturance, authenticity, inquiry and compassion.

We talked about listening, sitting in circles , making a different mark on the Earth, changing our neuropathways, the importance of keeping the questions, the call to be initiated, crone-hood, elderhood, community and connection, and so much more.

#42. An Era of Confusion

#42. An Era of Confusion

“Inspired” by  the current  lockdown here...

Reflecting on the frustration I hear  children expressing  about drifting in and out of schooling in lockdowns...

Youth contemplating about their future in today’s world...

My students and children in general are very close to my heart.

I keep thinking – what I could  do to help them move through these uncertain times...

Aware of  the presence of death and grief ...

Elders have an important role with young people...

When children cannot go to school could it be any  blessing in the situation?...

When everyone is confused, could we find the solution within?...

Creating a parallel education system that won’t be crashed when things change?...

This time invites us to be more creative instead of complaining. ...

How could the topic of death be an eye opener...?

Death is not skipping anyone after all....

How can  we look at life through other lenses...?

What is really important? ...

We want children to do what they are good at and what they were born to do and share with the world.

Is school going to teach them how to do  it?...

Music is very important in the life of every human being.

How can we bring more music to the lives of children...?

“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves” - Viktor frankl.

#39. From Chaos & Frustration to Boundaries & Validation

#39. From Chaos & Frustration to Boundaries & Validation

“I’ve been reflecting on your lecture which I appreciated so much. Thank you. Especially the part about how families /society have changed. It was a relief for me as a young teacher to hear that what happens now is not all about me being a “bad “ teacher. So, I wanted to share with  you this story of a family.

There's a mother  in my studio who's  doing such a fantastic job with her two children. She drives them to lessons, does her best to practice with them while she’s also working full time as a lawyer. I don’t know how she manages...

The truth is that they rarely practice, being either too tired or the kids don’t want to do it. The mother thinks that everything is up to what the child feels like doing, so they rarely listen to her and only to their immediate feelings.

It’s difficult for her to set boundaries and say ‘NO’. It’s always chaos when they enter and lots of frustration

Also, the father is not really  involved. Today I got a message saying that the young child doesn't want to come to group lessons ( he's nearly 5 and has only started recently). I wanted to ask you what you think. I think the youngest feels the mother’s stress and wants unconsciously to protect her through not wanting to play, seeing the stress it brings her.

I also think he sees that his father is not involved. How can I say this to a mother who desperately wants to give her children the gift of playing an instrument? I don’t want to lose this family but I think the only way is to get the father on track. What do you think? I’d be deeply grateful for any idea or though. Thank you again for being a continuous inspiration.”

This has been the question asked by a teacher.

It could have been asked by any teacher of any subject, about any parent. This is a question often asked .

In my reply I touched a few highlights. Hope you find it beneficial.

#36.Transformation - Planting seeds for the future

#36.Transformation - Planting seeds for the future

In these fast changing times we reflect on the role of educators and adults in the future of the world.

The enormity of the  changes that are going in our world now,  are calling to see a big picture.

Extreme measures call to extreme actions. We can't wait for the "big" people, the ones that "have power", to create the change for us.

Each and one of us has a role in this transformation. We are all called to participate in the change. To work together. No task is too small here. We cannot wait. The time is now.

“I want, if I can, to get education changed from mere instruction- to education in the real sense of the word; Education that inculcates, brings out, develops the human potential, based on the growing life of the child. That is why I am devoting my efforts to furthering Talent Education: what a child becomes depends entirely on how he is educated. My prayer is that all children on this globe may become fine human beings, happy people of superior ability, and I am devoting all my energies to making this come about, for I am convinced that all children are born with this potential”.

-Dr Shinichi Suzuki

Reflecting  on Suzuki's words,  I invite you to do a self- inquiry to find  what your gift is.

This is a call for parents, educators, grandparents, guardians - the whole village: what could we  do for a child? How could we recognise the gift of every child ? How could we nurture the gift in every child? How can we bring them up to share the gift they were born with to share with the world.

This is how we plant seeds for the future of the world. The time is NOW.
