S2Ep4: The Finite and the Infinite [Zoe Garry]

S2Ep4: The Finite and the Infinite [Zoe Garry]

Rev. Zoe Garry and I talk church, representation in ministry, generational differences, and what brings us hope as Gen Z enters the workaday world (as well as religious institutions...or decidedly *not* entering religious institutions.) What is fixed and immovable? What is evolving and emerging? A great talk. Dive in!

Rev. Zoë Garry is the Campus Minister and Director of NOLA Wesley/The Labyrinth Cafe (New Orleans). Zoe is an ordained minister in the PCUSA and a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary with a concentration in Women, Gender, and Theology. She completed her Clinical Pastoral Education at Trenton Psychiatric Hospital in Trenton, New Jersey. Prior to clinical training, she was an intern and later liturgist for the Princeton University Chapel, where she created liturgy, designed curriculum, and ministered to the students and community at Princeton.

Interfaith ministry has always been central to her call. This can be seen in her work with the Chautauqua Institute as the Christian coordinator for the Abrahamic Program for Young Adults and her certification to facilitate interfaith dialogues through the Interfaith Center of Philadelphia. College ministry and academia are both passions of Zoë’s and she strives to create a dynamic ministry that Christ-centered, open-tabled, and affirming at NOLA Wesley.

S2 Ep2: Christian Nationalism [Karrie Gaspard-Hogewood]

S2 Ep2: Christian Nationalism [Karrie Gaspard-Hogewood]

Karrie Gaspard-Hogewood is a PhD candidate studying Christian Nationalism as part of her doctoral work on the Sociology track of the City, Culture, and Community program at Tulane University. A Louisiana native and a graduate of LSU, Karrie began her professional career as a high school teacher where she taught Biology and Integrated Physics and Chemistry. Wishing to affect change in the larger educational system led Karrie to pursue graduate degrees in both Behavioral Science/Sociology and Social Work (she is also a licensed social worker) where she developed greater interest in the impact of social institutions on inequality and social change.

During her time in the CCC program, Karrie’s interests have evolved to include the interaction of religious and political institutions, along with the policy implications of this interaction. Her research focuses on religion, social movements, religiopolitical violence, and the varying expressions of Christian Nationalism within the United States.

Karrie has served as a consultant to the Center for Peace Diplomacy on U.S. electoral violence and has been an invited speaker, providing education to both religious groups and clergy on the threat of Christian Nationalism, as well as the goals and tactics of these groups. Karrie also teaches two of the required courses for the Social Policy & Practice Coordinate major at Tulane and serves as a Teaching Assistant for Social Statistics. She lives in New Orleans with her husband, Jay, and two rescue dogs, Otis and Mila.

Research Interests: Social movements, Religion, Religious Violence, Spiritual Warfare, Christian Nationalism, Charismatic movements

Karrie can be contacted at kgaspard[at]tulane[dot]edu

She provided the following resource list for you, our listeners:

The New Apostolic Reformation

The New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) is a neo-charismatic, non-denominational sub-movement within the larger Christian Nationalist movement. What makes NAR unique is their belief in prophecy revealed through modern-day apostles and prophets and a specific understanding of the end times called post-millennial dominionism – building God’s Kingdom here and now will accelerate the second coming of Christ. To achieve this dominion, NAR is attempting to conquer the seven mountains of culture: religion, family, education, media, government/military, business, arts & entertainment. This “seven mountain mandate” is believed to be a divine directive to achieve Christian rule in the U.S. and abroad. It is the fastest growing segment of Christianity globally.

S1 Ep11: Jumping Into Unknown Waters [Alyssa Aldape]

S1 Ep11: Jumping Into Unknown Waters [Alyssa Aldape]

Rev. Alyssa Aldape was kind enough to join me as we talk about this alleged “Great Clergy Resignation” and what is going on among our colleagues at this particular cultural moment. Alyssa is, like almost half of my season one guests, a graduate of Samford University. She went on to receive a Master of Divinity from Mercer’s McAfee School of Theology in Atlanta.

In addition to working as a pastor, Alyssa also works for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice and is a Contributing Writer at Good Faith Media.

Announcing her resignation from a church 2 years ago, Alyssa wrote: “It’s not easy to jump into dark icy cold water you’ve never been in before. Sometimes it takes a few countdowns to ten and sometimes it takes your boyfriend graciously jumping in with you. It’s also not easy leaving a job you love. It’s a lot like jumping off a deck into unknown waters.”

I love these words because she reframes the conversation so beautifully. It’s not just about the pastors. This is hard for all of us. Leaving anything you love is hard. Walking away from the comfort of what you’ve known is terrifying. And if you are lucky enough to have people around you who champion you and support you, then how amazing is it to grab their warm hand as you finally take that leap into the open, unknown waters.

We quote:

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/28/opinion/pastor-burnout-pandemic.html

https://www.npr.org/2022/09/03/1120917859/facing-burnout-many-faith-leaders-are-leaving-their-ministries

https://www.christianitytoday.com/news/2021/november/pastor-burnout-pandemic-barna-consider-leaving-ministry.html

Also, "MISSIONAL" is the word that Allan Roxboro coined. We couldn't bring it to mind and substituted "emergent" even though we knew it was wrong. Alyssa texted later, "in 2019 he was like, 'missional is canceled. Y’all ruined it.'” Way too often, church is the dad who just learned to dab.

S1 Ep9: Putting the "ish" in Jewish [Matt Reimer]

S1 Ep9: Putting the "ish" in Jewish [Matt Reimer]

Rabbi Matthew Reimer has served as rabbi to congregations in California, New York (where he lives now), New Jersey (where he works now), and New Orleans (where I met him). From the LES to Williamsburg, he became #TheRooftopRabbi of New York City during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Not only did he once work for the New York Philharmonic, he also played flag football for the Israeli National team while living and traveling throughout the country.
We get into the similarities between church engagement trends and synagogue engagement trends, particularly post-pandemic. It’s one thing for a progressive Christian pastor to imagine a posture beyond religion. How does that conversation sound in Reform Judaism? We’ll consider these questions and more on today’s episode of Beyond Religion.

Ep 7: Death by a Thousand Cuts [Jake Hall]

Ep 7: Death by a Thousand Cuts [Jake Hall]

My friend, my colleague, my brother: the Rev. Dr. Jake Hall. We've known each other for over 25 years, and that's enough time in life to say we've been through some stuff. Make some space this week for the full episode as Jake talks about a post-church life he never expected. It's raw, it's vulnerable, it's truth-telling, and I am honored to be a friend who can share this story in the light.

You can hear more from Jake each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. eastern on 101.9 The Creek. Gospel Gothic explores faith through the preachers, writers, and musicians that have shaped the Southern lexicon and imagination. Explore the crossroads of faith, music, and meaning in the Christ-haunted South with host Jake Hall Sundays at 9:30am on 100.9 The Creek: https://thecreekfm.com/show/gospel-gothic/

The Wendell Berry quote comes from this brilliant poem:

How to Be a Poet (to remind myself)

i
Make a place to sit down.
Sit down. Be quiet.
You must depend upon
affection, reading, knowledge,
skill—more of each
than you have—inspiration,
work, growing older, patience,
for patience joins time
to eternity. Any readers
who like your poems,
doubt their judgment.
ii
Breathe with unconditional breath
the unconditioned air.
Shun electric wire.
Communicate slowly. Live
a three-dimensioned life;
stay away from screens.
Stay away from anything
that obscures the place it is in.
There are no unsacred places;
there are only sacred places
and desecrated places.
iii
Accept what comes from silence.
Make the best you can of it.
Of the little words that come
out of the silence, like prayers
prayed back to the one who prays,
make a poem that does not disturb
the silence from which it came.

Ep 4: Purity Cult(ure) [Jay Hogewood]

Ep 4: Purity Cult(ure) [Jay Hogewood]

Today’s episode of Beyond Religion is a little different from the first three. For those of us moving toward expansive spirituality and away from restrictive religion, part of that process involves acknowledging where religion has caused harm. And not only that, but where the wounds are on and in our bodies. One of the worst offenders is purity culture within the Christian church.

The common messaging from evangelical teaching was that salvation had to earned by goodness, by purity, by struggle and suffering. You, O mortal, are too wretched for God to encounter and know without a whole lot of earning blessing and fighting to keep it. And when you grow up hearing that from all kinds of sources, it’s gonna mess you up in ways you’ll still be figuring out in your 40s and 50s.

Jay Hogewood and Elizabeth Lott candidly discuss sexuality, evangelicalism, and growing up in a purity cult. It's the church/bible nerdiest of all the episodes and also the one with the most cursing. Go figure.

The Rev. Dr. Jay Hogewood. Jay is the senior pastor of Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church in New Orleans, and prior to moving to New Orleans in 2017, he served as pastor of several churches in Baton Rouge, La.

Jay received his B.A. in English and history from Samford University in Birmingham (this is where we have a lot of overlap and will settle for a little while in our conversation today). He completed his M.Div. at Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University. His Ph.D. is in Hebrew Bible/Theological Hermeneutics from Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University.

Ep 2: Camp Crafted--Baptist Minister to Home Bartender [Suzanah Raffield]

Ep 2: Camp Crafted--Baptist Minister to Home Bartender [Suzanah Raffield]

Suzanah Raffield is Baptist Minister turned Home Bartender. She and her wife, Rhonda Stringfellow, are the creators and owners of Camp Craft Cocktails.

Camp began with popsicles, a 1969 camper food truck, and a cross country road trip. After towing thousands of their handcrafted Bold City Pops in their vintage camper to the 2016 Desert Trip music festival in California, Suzanah and Rhonda knew they wanted to build even more community, so they deconstructed favorite pop recipes to pivot toward a shippable product. The concept of working in community was ignited during their years as camp staff. Distilling down all that they loved from their tenure as camp directors to the perfect name and mission for their business, Camp Craft Cocktails was born on I-10, with flavors that beg to be shared, and a soul for creating community. Camp is more than cocktails-- it’s a mission to build longer tables where everyone is welcome, and everyone belongs.

Find Camp Craft Cocktails here: https://www.campcraftcocktails.com and here: https://www.instagram.com/campcraftcocktails/

In this episode, we get kinda churchy and use some insider language. You'll hear SBC and CBF, both Baptist demominations of our younger years--Southern Baptist Convention and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. We also name beloved missionaries of the 19th century: Lottie Moon and Annie Armstrong. Additionally, you'll hear university, seminary, and church names. Whether you're familiar with Baptist life or not, there are still lots of places to connect in Suzanah's story. Jump in and let us know what you think!

Ep 1: Beyond Pastor. Beyond Religion.

In today’s episode, host Elizabeth Lott shares little bit about herself and why she decided to put yet another podcast out into the world. Ten of the 12 episodes in season one are conversations with Elizabeth's friends and colleagues, who are also asking big and beautiful questions about spirit, energy, divinity, the universe, elves, magic, truth, you name it. This podcast is a journey, and you're invited to join the conversation as we consider spirituality Beyond Religion.
