In this message, we look at Colossians 1:21-23, talking about the reconciling power of Christ. We talk about the nature of our problem, the need for adequate self-assessment, and the power of what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

Colossians 1:21-23 (ESV)

21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation[a] under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Spiritual warfare is real // Colossians 1:12b-14 // Trey Hayman

Spiritual warfare is real // Colossians 1:12b-14 // Trey Hayman

There are very real forces aiming for your attention, affection, and allegiance. These forces have real power.

In this message, we talk about the Kingdom of God and the domain of darkness. We talk about three ancient enemies of your soul, and point you to one who is far more powerful than anything else.

We mainly focus in on Colossians 1:13-14 and look at questions around what is the kingdom of God? What is the domain of darkness (e.g., demons, the devil, etc.)?

What makes you see things the way you do? // Colossians 1:1-2 // Trey Hayman

This intro message to our Colossians series is about our perception, looking at what we think about God, ourselves, and others.

The way we think about these things can impact how we interpret reality.

If you struggle with doubt, your view of God, your view of yourself, or your view of others, this is for you.

Finding Joy in God's Presence // Advent Week 3: Joy (Psalm 16) // Trey Hayman

In this message, Trey walks through Psalm 16, talking about finding joy in the presence of God. PSALM 16 A psalm of David. 1 Keep me safe, O God, for I have come to you for refuge. 2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Master! Every good thing I have comes from you.” 3 The godly people in the land are my true heroes! I take pleasure in them! 4 Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods. I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood or even speak the names of their gods. 5 Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine. 6 The land you have given me is a pleasant land. What a wonderful inheritance! 7 I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. 8 I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. 9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. 10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave. 11 You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever. #psalms #psalm16 #sermon

A Sermon on Psalm 23 // Advent Week 2: Peace in Chaos // Trey Hayman

Perhaps the most well-known Psalm and one of the most well-known passages in the Bible, Psalm 23 has been a source of comfort to many. In this message, Trey walks through the Psalm line by line, unpacking beautiful truth that applies to us today. Psalm 23 (ESV) The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Hope in the Dark // Advent Week 1: Hope (Psalm 91) // Trey Hayman

Hope in the Dark // Advent Week 1: Hope (Psalm 91) // Trey Hayman

Did you know the devil quoted Scripture to Jesus? In Luke 4, Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit and is tempted by the devil. The devil uses part of Psalm 91 to tempt Jesus. How does Jesus respond? This passage, Psalm 91, is full of hope. In this message, Trey talks about hope in the darkness, and how biblical hope may be different than what we typically think. Trey walks line by line through this Psalm and offers some encouragement about hope. PSALM 91 (ESV) He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. 9 Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge— 10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. 14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” #psalm91 #sermon

The Water We Swim In: Why do we want what we want? // Psalm 37:4 // Trey Hayman

The Water We Swim In: Why do we want what we want? // Psalm 37:4 // Trey Hayman

Have you ever felt like you wanted things that weren’t good for you? Or wished you wanted things that were?

Maybe you’ve felt something like this: a part of you wants to get back at someone for what they said to you and another part wants to forgive and move toward kindness.

We have a war of wants, of desires, of loves.

In this message, we look at a popular passage in Psalm 37 about God giving us the desires of our hearts. What does this mean? And how do we see that happen in our lives?

The Water We Swim In: Why do we find things beautiful? // Revelation 1:14-19 // Trey Hayman

In this message in our Water We Swim In series, Trey talks about beauty and the beauty of God and learning to see and appreciate beauty. *Sorry for the audio issues. Our audio recording went out, and we tried to salvage the audio. Revelation 1:14-19 14 His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. 15 His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. 16 He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave. 19 “Write down what you have seen—both the things that are now happening and the things that will happen.

The Water We Swim In: Feeling Unseen in a Highly Visual World // Genesis 16 // Trey Hayman

The Water We Swim In: Feeling Unseen in a Highly Visual World // Genesis 16 // Trey Hayman

Do you ever feel unseen? Overlooked?

In this week's message, Trey talks about a powerful story of someone who is taken advantage of, hurt, and used, where she describes God as "the God who sees me."

It's a story about a woman named Hagar and her discovering she was pregnant with Ishmael.

She is the only person in the Old Testament to directly name God, and this is what name she ascribes to Him. What a profound statement about the character of God to showcase this aspect of His character when her world screams something so different.

In this world, it's so easy to feel overlooked, like you have to vye for the attention of others, but what if you aren't only looked at? What if you are fully seen?

The Water We Swim In: Hurry // Trey Hayman

You are being shaped by the world you live in. Oftentimes, this happens to us without us even realizing it. It 's the water we swim in. Over the course of this series, we're looking at what shapes us and what sort of invitation Jesus offers. In this intro message, we dive into the theme of water in the Scriptures (pun intended), focusing on the themes of chaotic water and the water of life. This week, we look at hurry and how our ever hurried and noisy world makes it hard to develop a deep life with Jesus. #sermon #hurry #spiritualformation

Do you want to be healed? // John 5:1-15 // Trey Hayman

Do you want to be healed? // John 5:1-15 // Trey Hayman

Does God still heal today?

In this message, we look at this question Jesus asks in John 5. He asks, "Do you want to be healed?" or "Do you want to be made well?"

John 5:1-15 (NLT) Afterward Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish holy days. 2 Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, was the pool of Bethesda, with five covered porches. 3 Crowds of sick people—blind, lame, or paralyzed—lay on the porches. 5 One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?”7 “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.”8 Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!”9 Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath, 10 so the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, “You can’t work on the Sabbath! The law doesn’t allow you to carry that sleeping mat!”11 But he replied, “The man who healed me told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”12 “Who said such a thing as that?” they demanded.13 The man didn’t know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd. 14 But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, “Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.” 15 Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him.

A Tale of Two Lost Sons // Luke 15:11-32

A Tale of Two Lost Sons // Luke 15:11-32

This story is often referred to the story of the prodigal son. This story, though is about more than one son. Jesus tells this story about two sons and a father. The two sons take two different paths toward fulfillment. Tim Keller in his book Prodigal God says that the younger son pursued fulfillment through the path of self-discovery and the older son through the path of moral conformity. One aimed to find fulfillment through doing what felt good or seemed pleasing to him. The other aimed to find fulfillment through doing "right things." While both paths miss the mark, it seems Jesus sees the path of the older son as more dangerous. It is possible to be physically close (in church, in small group, etc.) and spiritually very distant from the Father.

How do you become who you are made to be? // Formation // Trey Hayman

Have you ever thought about who you're becoming? In this message, we talk about how to become who you are made to be and practical steps you can take to do so. JOHN 15:1-17 (NLT) “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. 3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. 5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. 7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! 8 When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father. 9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

Why do I feel so lonely? // Connection // Trey Hayman

Why do I feel so lonely? // Connection // Trey Hayman

Why do so many of us feel lonely? We can be surrounded by people and yet still feel unseen, unknown, and unloved. Why? Do we have to feel this way? Is there something we're missing? What if your loneliness is actually evidence of what you were created for? What if we actually numb ourselves when we aim to fill our loneliness with things that aren't what is best for us? In this message in our values series, we talk about connection. We talk about how you were made for connection with God, with yourself, and with others. JOHN 15 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. 3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. The Fruit of the Spirit // Galatians 5:22-26 // Trey Hayman

It is possible for you to become a person who is kinder, more loving, more gentle, and more peaceful.

In this message, we look at a famous passage on the fruit of the Spirit and talk about the invitation from God to become a person of love as a response to His love for us.

GALATIANS 5

22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. 26 Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

What Do We Do When It Feels Like God Has Forgotten Us? // Nehemiah 1:5-11 // Israel Muñoz

What Do We Do When It Feels Like God Has Forgotten Us? // Nehemiah 1:5-11 // Israel Muñoz

Nehemiah was a man of humility and a leader who was willing to admit his own faults alongside his people. As you can see in his documented prayer below, Nehemiah used "us" and "we" language, showing that he considered himself to be on the same level as the people Israel, acknowledging that they had all fallen short of their covenant relationship with their Creator. Check out this message on Nehemiah about what it means to pray to God in the midst of hardship. Nehemiah 1:5-11 NLT Then I said, “O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of unfailing love with those who love him and obey his commands, listen to my prayer! Look down and see me praying night and day for your people Israel. I confess that we have sinned against you. Yes, even my own family and I have sinned! We have sinned terribly by not obeying the commands, decrees, and regulations that you gave us through your servant Moses. “Please remember what you told your servant Moses: ‘If you are unfaithful to me, I will scatter you among the nations. But if you return to me and obey my commands and live by them, then even if you are exiled to the ends of the earth, I will bring you back to the place I have chosen for my name to be honored.’ “The people you rescued by your great power and strong hand are your servants. O Lord, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you. Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me. Put it into his heart to be kind to me.”

"My Grace is Sufficient for You" // 2 Corinthians 12:5-10 // Trey Hayman

"My Grace is Sufficient for You" // 2 Corinthians 12:5-10 // Trey Hayman

Have you ever prayed for God to do something and felt like He wouldn't?

What happens when we pray and our circumstances don't change? What happens when we ask God for healing and it doesn't seem to happen?

How do we respond when we deal with chronic pain, depression, anxiety, etc.?

In this message we look at Paul's "thorn in the flesh" and what that teaches us about God, prayer, suffering, and walking in a broken world. We pray it's a healing word for you.

2 Corinthians 12:5-10 (NLT)

That experience is worth boasting about, but I’m not going to do it. I will boast only about my weaknesses. 6 If I wanted to boast, I would be no fool in doing so, because I would be telling the truth. But I won’t do it, because I don’t want anyone to give me credit beyond what they can see in my life or hear in my message, 7 even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud.8 Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. 9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

What It Means to be Adopted into God's Family (Christ-Haunted People Pt. 4) // Trey Hayman // Romans 8:12-17

What It Means to be Adopted into God's Family (Christ-Haunted People Pt. 4) // Trey Hayman // Romans 8:12-17

What does it mean to be adopted into God's family?

Romans 8 talks about being given the spirit of adoption. What does that mean?

In this message, we talk about identity and how we relate to God. We talk about the difference it makes when you become part of God's family.

We focus in on whether we define ourselves by our sin or by what God has done for us.

A big question for this message is - If you follow Jesus, do you consider yourself primarily a sinner saved by grace or a saint who still sins?

Romans 8:12-17 (NLT)12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. 13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” 16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. 17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

In this kickoff message for our series, we look at Psalm 139 and talk about how a distorted image of God affects everything else in life. We unpack some popular caricatures of God and offer a new way forward. Looking at Psalm 139, we see the beautiful message that you are both known and loved.

*The inspiration for the title of this series comes from a quote from Flannery O'Connor.

Text: Psalm 139 O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. 3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. 4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. 5 You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! 7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave,[a] you are there. 9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, 10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. 11 I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— 12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. 13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. 15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. 16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. 17 How precious are your thoughts about me,[b] O God. They cannot be numbered! 18 I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me! 19 O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers! 20 They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name. 21 O Lord, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you? 22 Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. #nashvillechurch #sermon #psalm139#nashvillechurch #sermon #psalm139
