They are also showing how to choose a mediator yourself if you do not have a clue how to do it, showing the mediators' directory available at InstantMediations.com. Mediators are not biased and they are not there to judge any of the parties. Mediators need to be transparent to the parties of who they are and what they do in the mediation process and on top any circumstance which might raise doubt as to the mediator's neutrality and impartiality should be disclosed by the mediator at the very beginning of the mediation. There are also safeguards in mediation to ensure that mediator can be trusted, such as its confidentiality and the fact that it is voluntary throughout the entire process. Lastly, mediators are bound by the law, the ethical rules and the contracts they enter into with the parties.

They explain in simple words and show practical examples of how a good mediator can create a safe place for the mediating parties, even if difficult emotions come into play. It's not just about showing empathy or allowing parties to vent - it is also about leading them through understanding the emotions and making the parties at ease with whatever they are going through to help them reach an agreement. Amongst practical solutions, Douglas Noll's concepts of emotional validation, deep listening and de-escalation are being mentioned (see another video on this podcast with Doug Noll: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzDQYVc_dtI) as well as some other tools available to mediators, like caucus mediation (placing the parties in different rooms to mediate separately), working closer on improving communication between the parties or simply taking a break.

Leadership Book Review With the Author - A Manousso Musing Interview with Rev. Tope Popoola
Rev. Tope Popoola (topepopoola.com.ng) as a guest of Dr. Manousso (manousso.us) and Natalia and Mac (OlowskaPierre.com) talks about leadership based on Rev. Tope Popoola's two books: "Lead as you go" (which is about to be published) and "Leadership is for the dead" (already available for purchase). Out of his own experience in life and as a minister, Rev. Popoola states credible and understandable principles of leadership which are often misunderstood. He starts with an assertion that the society blames the leaders for a lot of things - not realizing or perhaps forgetting that the leaders themselves are the products of this very society (in Rev. Popoola's words: "The system produces the leaders after their own kind"). This shows a crucial characteristic of leadership which we need to keep in mind always - the leaders are poisoned by the same problems that the society is - and this can be traced in the previous work and service of the leaders. So the leaders come to their offices with the experience gained in this very society - yet on top, the power has the ability to amplify the real self of a man, bringing new traits and strengthening the pervious mistakes and errors. However, the key to good leadership is to understand that leadership is a service to others, not a way for fulfilling one's ego and as such it needs to embrace the sacrifice. Hence Rev. Popoola speaks about "the dead" - as a lot egoistic traits and myths need to die before a good leader is created. Leadership is therefore the ability to take responsibility for the outcomes and consequences. Also, you can't give what you do not have. The virtues the leader wishes to offer should arise in this leader first and only then can be given to the society. Therefore integrity is such a vital feature in any leader and makes them authentic and easy to follow and identify with. As power is the ability to influence people to make them do the desired things, the leader using the power needs to be service minded and community oriented and willing to act, to do things that others are not willing to do. And when these things are done - accept the responsibility for the outcomes. Customer Service With Rev. Tope Popoola - A Manousso Musing With Mediator Trainer with Dr. Manousso
Rev. Tope Popoola (topepopoola.com.ng) as a guest of Dr. Manousso (manousso.us) and Natalia and Mac (OlowskaPierre.com) explains the secrets of the customer relationship management for mediators. In his latest book (Customer Relationship Management, Rules of Engagement) Rev. Popoola shares concepts checked out in practice in his own life as a customer and coach, to shift the perspective of any business to the proper core of it, which is not making money but serving the customer. His thoughts shared in this video make us aware that it is the customer who pays our salaries and that pay comes as a reward for the value we give. And since we serve our customers in every business, also as mediators and attorneys, we need to satisfy our customers' needs in the most fulfilling manner, and especially focusing on their emotions. He expands on the concept of the brand and how visual identification gives us the first distinction, which in terms of value is a promise of what they can get. Yet then come the next steps - expectation based on the brand and the first contact and then the real experience - which ultimately leads to perception - which becomes the reality of being served by the business. An crucial part in this entire process plays good communication - which in fact is the ability to connect with the customer and in other words is all about how we make our customers feel. We need to remember, that every customer decision is based on their emotions, and if these emotions are positive and if we avoid being perceived as just selling something to the customer - we should be successful and our pay should be in place without discussion. Being aware of these steps is a key to taking care of the customers the way which creates a value - and the value gives the reward - which is the ultimate step of the customer relationship management and the economical purpose of the existence of the business.

Peer Mediation & Student Engagement With Dr. Angela Miller
Dr. Angela Miller of mediationnikan.com in conversation with Natalia and Mac of olowskapierre.com discuss the necessity of bringing mediation skills to schools to educate children as young as 13 years of age till they are adults (8 grade till 12 grade). The time of adolescence is crucial when learning to resolve conflicts in an amicable manner as these are the moments when the children are appreciating of their peers' views more than those of the adults, like teachers and parents. Teaching mediation skills to the youngsters not only enables them to solve the conflicts by themselves but also equips them with the skills they will take outside of the classroom - like active listening, avoiding prejudice and understanding and accepting differences. It also produces the effect of calming down stressful situations in the school territory and outside of it in any peer groups leading to better anger management and improving social skills. Angela shows how this should be the mediator's initiative as part of their community service and how it will benefit long term the individuals themselves and their environment: families, communities, workplaces.
