Thomas Pedersen - The Silent Nuclear Revolution

Thomas Pedersen - The Silent Nuclear Revolution

This Fireside Conversation features Mr. Thomas Pedersen, who co-founded Copenhagen Atomics in 2015. The young Danish company has set out to revolutionize the energy sector. With their innovative technology, using Thorium instead of uranium in their molten-salt reactors, they can generate energy more safely, efficiently, and much cheaper than traditional nuclear reactors – or other energy sources, like wind or solar, for that matter. Thomas explains how their technology works, where in the business development process they are, and what challenges they are facing. One of the biggest takeaways from this Conversation is the exciting things going on in the nuclear sector! Technologies have advanced much further and no longer resemble the ones usually associated with Fukushima or the traditional nuclear power plants of the past 30-50 years. We believe developments like these are worth learning about for all of us, as we are more dependent on energy supply than we sometimes realize. Unequivocally, and putting it in the words of Copenhagen atomics: ‘Energy truly equals prosperity.’

Dirk Steinhoff - In this Phase of Great Change, Investment Opportunities Exist…

Dirk Steinhoff - In this Phase of Great Change, Investment Opportunities Exist…

This Fireside Conversation is between BFI’s Chief Investment Officer, Dirk Steinhoff, and Frank R. Suess, and provides an investor outlook for 2024, through the eyes of BFI. Before looking ahead, Dirk looks back at the biggest “game changers” of 2023 and what impact they will play for us investors in 2024. One thing is clear: we are living through a period of great change. And with those changes, opportunities will present themselves in places we aren’t used to looking in.

Dirk Steinhoff and Frank R. Suess discuss how rising political polarization and the positive global trend towards nuclear energy are two of last year’s biggest game changers, amongst others. They share their expectations for inflation and how, due to supply chain shortages and lack of investment in exploration, commodity prices will most probably keep rising – even if we’re headed into a recession.

They turn their focus to geopolitics, an area that will only continue to increase in importance in 2024 for the concerned investor. With the BRICS countries gaining in strength and size, and a shifting world power structure, the de-dollarization theme is becoming very real….if not for today, certainly in the future.

Finally, Dirk digs deeper into how BFI selects what they feel are the most interesting sectors compared to the events in the world, what his attitude towards specific investment areas is, and how investors can effectively manage upcoming risks. And jurisdictional diversification and safe custody are becoming just as important today as how you invest. One thing is clear: In the big scheme of things, ‘things don’t look too rosy, but there are always good investment opportunities’ – you just have to know where to look!

Giuseppe Gracia - Freedom, Faith and Reason

Giuseppe Gracia - Freedom, Faith and Reason

This Fireside Conversation is with Swiss author, journalist, and communications specialist, Giuseppe Gracia. He explains how both faith and reason are required for building a healthy society, what the core issues of woke ideology are, and why “freedom” has nothing to do with having options.

Guiseppe’s career has formed around being a PR consultant, and a crisis communications specialist. He served a long tenure as a spokesman for a Catholic diocese, which helped forming his strong beliefs in Christian and classical liberal values and their importance for society.

n this Conversation, he explains how faith - as in Judeo-Christian values - and reason are ‘like a perfect couple’. They balance each other out and lie at the core of Western societies and human rights.

Giuseppe therefore cautions not to hastily replace Christianity with ‘new religions’, such as woke ideology or the climate panic that in his view are deeply cynical and anti-human if examined in depth. From his perspective, the woke ideology fundamentally mischaracterizes human concepts like love or freedom, leading young people to chase ideals that will not bring them the fulfillment they are looking for.

The reason these ideas find so much popularity within younger generations, Giuseppe explains, is that they directly speak to our core instincts of tribalism and safety seeking that are still deeply seated in adolescents. Hence the classical liberal narrative that calls us to grow out of these admittedly comfortable instincts is harder to ‘sell’.

Ultimately, Giuseppe says, it comes down to all of us individually being ‘needed’ instead of ‘needy’, to actively tackle our problems, work hard and make this world better.

Check out Giuseppe's work.

Frank R. Suess pt. III - There's No Such Thing as a Free Lunch!

Frank R. Suess pt. III - There's No Such Thing as a Free Lunch!

In the third part of this Fireside Conversation, Natalie Vein and Frank R. Suess discuss the possible impact of financial repression measures, how artificial intelligence is changing the way we invest, and why the trade-offs of all political stances need to be part of a differentiated discourse. While Frank shares a hopeful outlook into the future - especially in Switzerland - he does emphasize the importance of observing the changes happening and of being aware of the geopolitical and economic risks we might be facing. One thing, he said, is obvious: His generation hit the jackpot growing up in Switzerland or the U.S.A. The next generation will be facing more challenges. Two of the many aspects that will fundamentally impact the next generation's lives are artificial intelligence and other upcoming technologies. Like with most new developments and innovations, they come with both benefits and risks. Carefully weighing up the pros and cons of an issue or an opinion, is something that has become rare in our political discourse. We've become quite unilateral and very quick to overturn what has been built for decades without considering what we might lose along with it. Frank illustrates this in the Trade-Off Model he has drafted for the latest BFI Special Report, Deeper Into the New Era. He explains how we can use it to be more aware of the 'Trade-Offs' that come with each position - There is no such thing as a free lunch!

Frank R. Suess pt. II - Out of the Era of Financials into the Era of Tangibles

Frank R. Suess pt. II - Out of the Era of Financials into the Era of Tangibles

In this part 2 of the Fireside Conversation between our CEO and Chairman, Frank R. Suess, and Natalie Vein, a wide range of topics are discussed including the threat to democracy, inflation, the growing wealth gap, the role gold can and should play in a portfolio, and much, much more!

After having discussed the beginnings of BFI, de-dollarization and the changing principles of investing in part 1 of this Conversation, Frank and Natalie now adjust the focus to other key big picture considerations. (Please note that Frank’s Fireside Conversation was recorded in the summer of 2023, which is why events like the Israel-Hamas war are not mentioned.) In discussing the extreme polarization we are seeing in the US and the West in general, Frank reflects on Switzerland where there is a culture of talking politics, a culture of being able to disagree, but still one where your voice can be heard. Speaking of politics, who would Frank vote for in the upcoming US election?

On the inflation and monetary front, with reference to BFI’s Special Report from earlier in the year, Frank believes inflation will be sticky and the imbalances created by the mountains of debt could certainly lead to a credit crisis. He also feels that “the turbulences we’ll see on the currency front and managed financials front has the potential of really turning sour….there is a serious risk to deterioration of wealth”. From that, for investors today, it’s not just about what you own, but “how” you own it.

Today, we are moving out of the era of financials, to an era of tangibles. At BFI, one tangible we’ve been invested in since 2002 is gold. The importance of gold’s role in a portfolio, combined with the financial situation we saw developing in the mid 2000’s is what ultimately led him into creating BFI Bullion (formerly Global Gold). And finally, in his latest endeavor, aXedras, he’s now taking it one step further, tackling the ‘Know Your Assets’ problems of the world gold industry. Using the distributed ledger technology (DLT), aXedras is building an elegant, self-regulating solution to provide full transparency and actual product integrity in the gold industry.

Enjoy and stay tuned for part three!

Frank R. Suess pt. I - BFI: Back to the Beginnings

Frank R. Suess pt. I - BFI: Back to the Beginnings

As we’re coming to the end of 2023 – the year BFI has turned 30 – we’d like to take you back all the way to the beginnings of our company and a product called the Swiss Annuity. In this Fireside Conversation, our Chairman and CEO, Frank Suess, shares how it all started, what his main learning points as a seasoned entrepreneur are and how much the world has changed since he started.

For this Fireside Conversation, we’re switching things up a bit: Frank is joined by Natalie Vein, a long-term business partner of BFI, a first-class economist, journalist, and writer. This time, she will be the one asking the questions!

In this first part of their Conversation, Frank shares how he took over the business from his Dad in 1998, and how he, coming from renowned Consultancy firms, first had to learn what leading a small business entails. He explains what he learned, why he decided to stick with US clients in 2009 and what makes success most enjoyable to him.

They then go on to discuss the Special Report (link to Special Report) that was published in May this year: How we’re transitioning to a multi-polar world, the prospects of BRICS and De-Dollarization, the growing political polarization in the West and how we’re faced with new principles of investing as the era of ‘cheap money’ has irrevocably come to an end.

Markus Somm - Swiss Industrialization, Democracy & the Healing Capacities of Competition

Markus Somm - Swiss Industrialization, Democracy & the Healing Capacities of Competition

In this second Fireside Conversation between Frank Suess and well-known Swiss journalist and author, Markus Somm, they pick up Swiss history right where they left off in their first Conversation to discuss Swiss industrialization, the evolvement of direct democracy, and the imperative role fair competition plays in creating a healthy democracy.

If you haven’t done so already, we invite you to review their first Fireside Conversation to learn more about why Switzerland is such a special case, how the Swiss evolved from notorious mercenaries to international entrepreneurs, and why Swiss neutrality was originally a question of internal peace.

Markus and Frank dive into how the Swiss, who depended on their textile export industry in the 19th century, were shocked when the British started the industrial revolution and suddenly were able to produce high-quality textiles much cheaper. Markus explains how industrialization then quickly progressed in Switzerland to the point where the Swiss became serious competitors to the British.

Parallel to the ongoing industrialization, there was a civil war going on in Switzerland. Markus shares how this very short and surprisingly ‘unbloody’ war led to the creation of the first Swiss constitution in 1848, which was later revised and led to Switzerland becoming the first democratic state in Europe.

From there, they go on to discuss how and why Swiss democracy turned into the direct democracy we know today, how Switzerland today increasingly compromises on its successful system, and why free and fair competition is crucial for a forward-moving society and functioning democracy.

Don McAlvany - From Successful Entrepreneur to Founder of a Non-Profit

Don McAlvany - From Successful Entrepreneur to Founder of a Non-Profit

After decades in the financial and geopolitical world, Don McAlvany and his wife, Molly, founded the Asian Pacific Children's Fund (APCF) to support well-run children's homes in Asia. In this Conversation, Don shares why they got involved, how this fund works, and what their vision for the future is.

Travelling though Asia twenty years ago, Don and Molly realised the shocking numbers of children living in horrendous circumstances and how great the need for good, safe children's homes was - and still is. As Don describes it, he 'must have had a heart transplant', because suddenly, the world of business was not as gratifying any more.

After decades as a successful entrepreneur, financial and geopolitical advisor, and author of two best-selling books, his wife Molly, and Don, decided to advocate for these children. They founded the Asian Pacific Children's Fund in 2006 and have been living in the Philippines ever since.

What is unique about their approach is that they do not found new homes themselves; they instead look for existing, trustworthy, and well-managed local homes that need - often desperately - financial support. All funds go directly to the children. As of now, APCF supports 8 homes in the Philippines, India, Nepal, Myanmar, and Indonesia.

In this Conversation, Don explains the criteria they use to select the homes, where the difficulties they are facing in India, Nepal, and Myanmar come from, and how the kids keep them young.

Don and Molly are close, life-long friends of Frank Suess, who has been supporting APCF for a long time. Frank acts as a member of their board. If you'd like to learn more about APCF, visit their website at www.apcf.world.

Christoph Wild - Gold's Bad Reputation

Christoph Wild - Gold's Bad Reputation

In this Fireside Conversation, Frank R. Suess sits down with Christoph Wild, president of the ASFCMP (in English, the Swiss Association of Precious Metal Manufacturers and Dealers) to discuss the precious metals industry, where some of the negative perceptions of the industry have come from, and what tangible efforts are being taken to change them.

Christoph Wild has more than 30 years of experience in the precious metals industry. Up until February 2022, he had served 10 years as the CEO and a Delegate on the Board of Directors with the Swiss-based refinery, Argor-Heraeus, one of the leading precious metals refiners in the world.  As president of the ASFCMP, he remains a key representative of the Swiss precious metals industry as he works within the industry, with a variety of active stakeholders, and NGO’s, amongst others, to support and improve the standards of the gold industry.

Frank and Christoph discuss the tarnished reputation of the industry and why this sector seems to attract bad press even while there is good being done. They also dive into the importance precious metals plays in the Swiss economy, how Switzerland came to be a hub for the industry, and why there is an enormous opportunity for precious metals to avoid the pitfalls that have befallen the finance sector.

Like in our Conversation with the CEO of the World Gold Council, David Tait, it becomes very clear that this topic – like so many others – is NOT just one-dimensional and is more complex than many people might think.

Anastassios Frangulidis - The Many Moving Parts of Today's Investment Environment

Anastassios Frangulidis - The Many Moving Parts of Today's Investment Environment

In this Fireside Conversation, Frank sits down with Anastassios Frangulidis. Anastassios is a renouned economist in Switzerland. For many years, he was the Chief Economist and Chief Strategist of the Zurich Kantonalbank (ZKB), one of the largest state backed banks in Switzerland. Today, he heads up Swiss Multi Asset Zurich of Pictet Asset Management. Pictet is a Swiss private bank and has been a trusted partner of BFI for over 15 years. With his background, Anastassios has immense experience and knowledge in both economic research and investing which enables him to share valuable and comprehensive insights. In this Conversation, him and Frank discuss the many moving parts investors have to consider in today’s environment: Monetary and fiscal policies and their longer-term impact, interest rates, inflation, the economic cycle and where we find ourselves compared to China and Japan and the broader impacts of the thightening of the economy. Furthermore, they underline to growing importance of taking into account the current geopolitical changes and supply chain rearrangements. Finally, they tie their conclusions together and discuss the implications for investors. Now, that a ‘buy and hold approach’ has become very difficult and active portfolio management is essential: Where do the opportunities of tomorrow lie? Where do they see interesting themes and sectors? How can we effectively protect and grow what is rightfully ours? This Conversation was recorded right before the banking crisis started and Credit Suisse was saved. Since then, a lot has happened and it is to expect that there’s more to come. We live in turbulent, but also very interesting times! However, Easter is right around the corner and we hope you can take a step back and enjoy some quality time with your loved ones.

Bruno Ciscato pt. II - Blockchain beyond Crypto

Bruno Ciscato pt. II - Blockchain beyond Crypto

This is the second part of our Conversation with Bruno Ciscato from R3.

The first one discussed the fundamentals of the technology: How does it work? With what purpose has it been introduced to the market? And much more. If you'd like to first learn about some of the basics of blockchain, make sure to watch that conversation before-hand.

In this second part, Bruno and Frank discuss blockchain's potential beyond crypto... way beyond crypto for that matter. The many use cases – those that already exist and those that are on the horizon – are highlighted by Bruno’s accolades for the role aXedras is playing in becoming a precious metals industry standard for provenance and transparency. Investors will appreciate the detailed explanation on how blockchain will help the precious metals industry, amongst many others. The subject matter of ESG and CBDCs (central bank digital currencies) also surprisingly comes into play. And the conversation is concluded with the discussion of opportunities and challenges to watch out for.

This conversation definitely underlines the fact that we live in extremely interesting times!

Bruno Ciscato pt. I - Blockchain 101

Bruno Ciscato has managed to be at the epicenter of technological revolution for the past 30 years and is now a board member of SBI R3 Japan. R3 is a leading provider of enterprise trust technology and services. We've split Frank R. Suess's Conversation with him into two parts. The first one covering the basics of blockchain; the fundamentals to understand the technology. How and with what purpose has blockchain been introduced to the market? How does the consensus mechanism replace an intermediary? What is a Distributed Ledger? What are the key differences between CORDA (R3's technology) and bitcoin? How can blockchain be used beyond crypto? Did incidents like FTX happen because the blockchain technology has failed? Note that if you are already knowledgable about the technology, you might want to skip to part II of the conversation, which is coming soon!
