The Art of Skillful Neglect in Orthopedic Care

The Art of Skillful Neglect in Orthopedic Care

Our guest today is Dr. Brian Cole. Dr. Cole is an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at RUSH and a Professor of Orthopaedics, Anatomy and Cell Biology at Rush University Medical Center. He received an MD and MBA from the University of Chicago, completed his orthopedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell Medical Center, and a Sports Medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. His professional career outside of academia includes serving as a team physician for the Chicago Bulls, a co-team physician for the Chicago White Sox, and a team physician for the Chicago Dogs and DePaul University.

Every day, thousands of patients find themselves in orthopedic clinics searching for answers to alleviate their pain and restore their function. And they rely on the doctor they have chosen to offer them the best solutions available. For some, that could mean an injection, oral medication and other non-operative treatments. For others, it could mean surgery. So, how do orthopedic surgeons practice the art of skillful neglect? In this episode, expect to learn more about how orthopedic surgeons decide which treatments to offer, how they handle setting expectations for outcomes, and much more.

How To Know When You Need A Joint Replacement

On this episode with Dr. Richard Berger, you’ll learn more about both hip and knee replacement, including common questions that patients have about the procedure, how to know when it might be the right time to decide to have a joint replacement, and much more.
