The Friday Report - September 9 2022

Around the world this week, Israel's President Isaac Herzog travelled to Germany to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Munich massacre in which 11 Israeli Olympians were murdered by Palestinian terrorists. In addressing the German Parliament he said, "Even in our generation, even right now, dark forces of hate, led by Iran threaten not only Israel, and not only stability in the Middle East, but the global order".

Do Russian Jewish People Owe their Freedom to Gorby?

"Let My People Go" - was the cry for freedom from the free-soviet-Jewry movement. I met the U.S.S.R.'s last President, Mikael Gorbachev nearly two decades ago. What were my impressions?

The Friday Report - September 2, 2022

We should be wondering if it's hardly surprising then when a government consultant on anti-racism feels sufficiently comfortable to refer to Jewish people as, “loud-mouthed bags of human feces, aka the Jewish White Supremacists.” as reported in the press.

So how do we confront bigots? With pride and unity. Since the inception of our organization, we have been working on changing the narrative. We can see that our views are catching on in the expressed sentiment of other groups.

We must break out of the shtetl mentality. Israel has already done it -- as will be shown in our upcoming film.

Now it's our turn to stand up tall, and be the example for our children and grandchildren. We cannot afford to be silent about Heritage Canada or any other Antisemitic incident.

Prisoner of Tehran: A Conversation with Marina Nemat

Prisoner of Tehran: A Conversation with Marina Nemat

The 1979 Iranian Revolution ushered in a new era of Islamic fundamentalism, oppression and a murderous regime.  Thinking the regime would quickly disappear, Marina Nemat became one of its many victims.  At just 16 yeas old, Nemat was taken to the notorious Evin prison where she was tortured and assaulted.  Many of her peers were murdered.  She eventually escaped to Canada and wrote a global best selling book retelling her story.  Prisoner of Tehran is a hard read - but an important one that recounts the brutality of a regime that has not changed in 40 years. "I don't see this murderous government that has taken thousands of lives and continues to do so, I cannot see it going anywhere for the foreseeable future" says Nemat.  But she does have a solution.  Listen to this podcast and find out what she says.

A Conversation with Jerusalem's Deputy Mayor, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum

Jerusalem's Deputy Mayor's Twitter handle says she is a Proud Zionist, a Feminist Advocate for Israel and the Co-Founded of the UAE-Israel Business Council.  But Ms. Fleur Hassan-Nahoum is much more. She is an energetic powerhouse who is advancing Israel in business, standing up proudly for her city, Jerusalem - and has some strong words for BDS advocates and antisemites.  She also has a warning for Joe Biden - look around the gulf to see who your friends and enemies are.  Join me for this engaging conversation.

Human Rights and Accessibility: A Conversation with The Hon. David Onley, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario

Its 2020 yet we are still struggling as a society with the problem of equality of opportunity for persons with disability.  Join me for a fascinating conversation with one of the world's top advocates for people with disability, the Honourable David Onley.  People with disability, Mr. Onley says, suffer the same form of discrimination as other groups.  The world still needs to change on how it views and responds to people with disabilities and provide this segment of the population with proper access so that it may have equal opportunity.

Saving the Uyghurs

Saving the Uyghurs

On October 17, 2020, The Economist published a major feature about the plight of the Uyghurs.  In its introduction, it said, "The first stories from Xinjiang were hard to believe. Surely the Chinese government was not running a gulag for Muslims? Surely Uyghurs were not being branded “extremists” and locked up simply for praying in public or growing long beards? Yet, as we report in this week’s China section (see article), the evidence of a campaign against the Uyghurs at home and abroad becomes more shocking with each scouring of the satellite evidence, each leak of official documents and each survivor’s pitiful account".

Join me for an insightful conversation with Mehmet Tohti, the executive director of the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project to understand what today many are calling a crime of humanity.  He describes the plight of his people and a cry for help for an end to what he calls a genocide.

25 Years Later: Revisiting the Jewish World's JFK Moment

25 Years Later: Revisiting the Jewish World's JFK Moment

On September 13, 1993 - Yitzhak Rabin signed the Oslo Accords at the White House. On November 4th, 1995 he was murdered by an Israeli assassin.  The peace process was dead and Yasser Arafat launched into a horrific campaign of suicide bombing attacks against Israel. How do we reconcile what unfolded before our eyes 25 years later?  Let me walk you down memory lane to an often forgotten time, when the sun was shining upon us. It lasted only two years...but it seems now like a lifetime away.

Optimism

Optimism

In turbulent times, we all need hope. We can focus on the negativity or choose to champion positive improvements to the human condition. Among them are recent peace agreements in the Middle East.  Its easy to disregard them among the noise pollution, but in an area of the world that has been fraught by war and despair, this is a welcomed relief.  Yes, perhaps this picture is rosy.  But in psychology 101 we learn about positive conditioning - rewards. So - for all those who dream big. Who believe in peace. Lets champion this. Humanity can save itself from itself if it learns to be optimistic.

Coronasemitism: The coronavirus pandemic is bringing with it a new level of anti-Semitism

Even while the world grapples with the most pressing health issue of our time, there are those who are using the coronavirus pandemic as another excuse to attack the Jewish people, a phenomenon I am calling “coronasemitism.”
