The Importance of Cultural Competence in Ministry

The Importance of Cultural Competence in Ministry

Have you ever heard the term cultural competence? Many Christians, I'm afraid, haven't, yet we need to understand it to effectively reach out to our communities and our world. It is all about understanding the culture and background of people so that you can relate to them and share the gospel.

Burnout is NOT just a Business Problem, It's a Church problem too

Burnout is NOT just a Business Problem, It's a Church problem too

In this episode of the podcast, Nick and Liz talk about the growing problem of Christian burnout. They discuss what burnout is, why it's happening to so many Christians, and how to prevent it. They also talk about how burnout is not just a business problem, but a church problem too. They share stories of how burnout has affected people in their own lives and in the lives of people they know. They offer hope and practical advice for how to prevent burnout and how to recover from it if you're already experiencing it. Burnout is not just a business problem Burnout is a state of chronic stress that can lead to physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. It can happen to anyone, but it's becoming increasingly common in the Christian community. There are a number of reasons why burnout is happening to so many Christians. One reason is that we're often putting too much pressure on ourselves to be perfect. We feel like we have to be everything to everyone, and we don't know how to say no. Another reason is that we're often not taking enough time for ourselves. We're so busy serving others that we forget to take care of ourselves. Burnout is not just a personal problem. It's also a church problem. When Christians are burned out, they're not able to serve the church effectively. They're not able to be the people God created them to be.

My Thoughts on the Asbury Revival | Was it real revival?

My Thoughts on the Asbury Revival | Was it real revival?

Revival has taken on many terms in our modern society. Revival can be an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, it can be a set weeklong meeting, it can be worship filled services that go beyond a single day, or it can be something that an individual experiences personally! So many things. Nick's initial reaction on Asbury was to wait and see. If lives were changed, people came to Christ, and there was legitimate long-term implications; then Nick believes this was a true revival. While there are other signs and indications of revival taking place, the term is thrown around in so many instances it becomes confusing.

In this episode, Nick focuses primarily on the personal experience of revival! What does it mean for a person and is what happened in Asbury true revival in that perspective? Tune in to find out!

The Impact of One

The Impact of One

Are you willing to be a "one"? The Bible is full of people who stand up and speak out for what is right even if they are greatly opposed. An example of this is Joshua and Caleb in Numbers 13-14. In this episode, Nick discusses this story and why it is impactful for us as Christians to be a "one". Joshua and Caleb were among 12 spied sent into the promised land, the land of Canaan. When the twelve returned, they told all of the beauty and splendor of the land God had promised. 10 of the 12 said there were giants and great people in the land they could not overcome and that the entire nation of people should just give up on the hopes of taking the land. Only Joshua and Caleb, the remaining two spies, spoke up saying the people could take it and God would help them! God makes promises, He will provide and take care of us as His children. How often do we get discouraged and give up on what God has promised? Sadly it happens too often. Will you be a "one" like Joshua and Caleb to stand and call out to everyone who is negative and stand for God, His truth, and His promises? The world needs more Joshua and Calebs in our Modern World. Tune in to this episode to hear Nick discuss this story!#ModernChristian #OneCanMakeADifference #BoldChristians

A Greek Philosophy From Acts has Reemerged - Stoicism

A Greek Philosophy From Acts has Reemerged - Stoicism

Have you heard of Stoicism? It's mentioned in the book of Acts and Paul had to debate with philosophers that followed this teaching. Nick believes it is once again coming into popularity and is entering the church. Why should we be concerned? Because it makes Christian's passive and not intent on taking things to God in prayer!

Being a Stoic is the idea of not being effected by things outside of your control. Experiencing pain, suffering, or disappointment? Just brush it off and remain positive! As you can see, that is clearly not what the Bible teaches. While yes, God is sovereign and we must trust His will; nowhere in scripture are we taught to become aloof to our difficulties or concerns and not to take them to God in prayer.

The doctrine of God being fully sovereign and Christians just sit back, and whatever happens just happens is a horrible idea. It neglects the relationship of man towards God. We rely on Him in pain, hurt, disappointment. Calvinistic teaching taken to an extreme of God being in control and man having no role or impact whatsoever diminishes the relationship that God established through Christ.

Do you agree? Is Stoicism a problem for the church? Is it perfectly acceptable to be a Stoic?

5 Things the Modern Church Needs

5 Things the Modern Church Needs

In this episode, Nick discusses several things that he believes are important for modern Christians and the modern church. While this is not an exhaustive list, these are just five important things that the church should be doing for its church members. Do you have any ideas about what they are?

1. Equipping - the training/teaching of the believers. How do we evangelize? How do we share our testimony/story with others? How do we disciple someone? How do we get involved and participate in specific ministries? All of this goes into the category of equipping.

2. Discipleship - while Nick has discussed this in detail in two prior episodes, he reiterates the importance of teaching other believers and growing together as fellow disciples of God. Discipleship is closely related to equipping and should be an important element to the modern church.

3. Encouragement - Ever had a bad day? We all have. Encouragement of the believers is important. We all need to be encouraged and likewise all need to be encouraging one another. Christians are not in a rivalry or at odds against each other, we are fellow believers and a support system for one another.

4. Accountability - This one is something none of us want to do, we don't like to be accountable. However, it strengthens us, helps us grow and be more for Christ! We need to find those we can be accountable to and with to grow and heal from past struggles.

5. Empathy - In our technological age we are very cold and desensitized to the needs and feelings of others. Brining empathy back into the church among believers is important. We must all be in this life, world, and faith journey together. Hurt with each other, celebrate with each other, and support one another.

Tune in to this week's episode to hear Nick discuss these 5 elements that a modern church needs to strengthen it's congregation.

The Most Important Thing A Christian Has

The Most Important Thing A Christian Has

Do you know what the most important thing a Christian has is? It isn't money, possessions, a house, the church building, or anything like that. While our personal relationship with Christ is the most important thing we have, Nick discusses the most important resource in the Christian's life. Time.
Nick, in this episode, discusses how time is finite, we only have so much, and we must be good stewards of that time that God has given to us! We need time to work, spend time with family, pray, attend church, read our Bible, and do anything else. It all costs us time.
Do you spend your time wisely? Most of us fall short in that area, and Nick admits he is guilty of the same. Check out this episode of the Modern Age Christian Podcast to hear Nick discuss time management as a Christian and why time is our most precious resource.

Finding The Right Person to Marry | 5 Things to Look For

Finding The Right Person to Marry | 5 Things to Look For

Searching for the right person to marry? Maybe you've already found them... In this episode, Nick discusses 5 things to look for in the right person you should marry.

Finding a potential spouse is a daunting task. It is full of ups and downs, fears, doubts, worry, and sometimes questioning "God, is there even anyone out there for me?". If you are praying and searching, keep trusting that God has someone for you and look for the things Nick discusses that will tie your hearts together.
God needs to be and should always be first in any couple's relationship. If that is first, spiritual health and communication are all keys to a successful relationship. Dating, marriage, or having your partner in life is more than just finding someone to live with and feeling something emotional. It is two people, joined together in a way that is honoring to God. Making sure both of these people have their hearts and minds set on the right thinking will prove vital to their relationship's success.

I’m Not Important, What Can I do for Christ?

I’m Not Important, What Can I do for Christ?

Ever have that feeling that you are insignificant or unimportant? That God can't use you in some way? Maybe you are struggling with self-doubts that you aren't good enough for God. You may not be the preacher, singer, musician, Sunday school teacher, or small group leader; if you're not any of those, do you still have a ministry? Simply put, yes. You are important to God's kingdom!
In this episode Nick discusses the feelings of doubt, questioning what you can do and how there are so many things Christians do in their day-to-day lives that impact others. From Encouragement, prayer, being a friend, witnessing, being faithful to church, and faithful to the things of God. All of those are important things that modern Christians can do!
Did you know that it has been said that 7 in 10 adults in the United States suffer from Imposter Syndrome? Or feelings of doubt and negativity about themselves and their ability? Fear that they will be found out as a fraud because they don't believe they know as much as people think or are as capable as people think? It is a serious problem and it's crept into the church. Christians suffer doubts, fears, and face struggles. We have to remember that we are followers of Christ! He gives us strength!
We need to get our eyes focused on Jesus and realize, He saw value in us to save us. He loves us and wants what is best for us. He will give us opportunities to serve, worship, and minister if we are willing to do so.

5 Idols of the Modern Church

5 Idols of the Modern Church

Do we still worship idols today? Absolutely. In this episode, Nick discusses what the 5 most common idols are to the modern Christians of today. Instead of having false gods, statues, and other entities than our one true God; we now have many other things that take His place in our lives. Many of these modern false idols are subtle and we don't even realize we are worshipping them!
We often hear misquoted that "Money is the root of all evil" when in reality that is false. The Bible says "The love of money" is. Money is an idol, especially in wealthy countries like the United States that can become a false idol. We crave working more, becoming rich, and living in a mansion but at the cost of our time and commitment to God. Some people allow this love to take place over God and church in their lives.
Technology in our day is common throughout life. It can be a great blessing but can turn into an idol if we are not careful. Binge watching Netflix or playing video games for hours at a time when neglecting your Bible and prayer time? That is an idol in your life.
Other idols can include fame, status, success, possessions, and affiliation. Affiliation we see more in our modern church and is growing into a major divide! What denomination, what music style to do prefer, what church leader do we study after, what political party are we with and the list goes on.Tune in to hear Nick's discussion of the 5 idols of the modern church!

The Instant Gratification Church

The Instant Gratification Church

Have you heard of the instant gratification society? Generation? Culture? What about the church? Yes, they have issues with instant gratification too! So often people deny a greater future reward for immediate pleasure or benefit. Nick discusses how this impacts the church.
Nick discusses the origins of the term 'instant gratification and how it is directly related to church activities now. From focusing on attendance, tithes/offerings, to worship; all of which can be taken over by an instant gratification mindset.
From worship to expecting God to answer or work immediately Christians have let the instant gratification mindset into the church. There is the thought of working up worship or convincing people to respond or act in service instead of letting God work.
Sometimes we have to wait on God to move, wait on Him to get responses from people, and wait on His timing. It often isn't easy but the rewards from waiting on God will far exceed what people can stir up.

Should Christians Use Dating Apps?

Should Christians Use Dating Apps?

A problem for modern Christians, young adults, college students, or maybe those still searching for God's match for them. Dating Apps come to the rescue! Or do they? Bumble, Hinge, Tinder, Christian Mingle, Match, and the list goes on are all out there and claim to help you find your perfect match. Are Dating Apps biblical and should Christians be using them?
In this Episode, Nick considers that thought. Nick discusses four key elements to examine if dating apps are biblical or not.
1. Is it prohibited by the Bible? 2. Is it harmful to our psychology? 3. It is harmful or hurtful in any way? 4. It is unkind to another person? If these apps cause harm, take us away from God, or are used simply to make us feel good instead of searching for God's life partner for us; then they are something we likely should avoid.

The Problem With ”Thoughts and Prayers”

The Problem With ”Thoughts and Prayers”

Have you ever seen someone post "Thoughts and prayers" on social media? Maybe you have. Have you ever considered what that means and what you are promising to do?
The phrase "Thoughts and prayers" is tossed around so casually without taking respect to the power of prayer, and often it is not even said by anyone who will actually pray for whatever situation has come up. It has become a catchphrase that is nice to say but holds little to no weight in most situations.
In this episode, Nick challenges the podcast listeners to follow through when they say they are praying for something or someone. Be sincere and consider people's needs or tragic situations before God in prayer. Thinking about prayer does not good for anyone. Taking the time and taking a situation to God will make the difference.
Nick discusses how we need to stop using "Thoughts and prayers," and just simply get on our knees and pray to God.#thoughtsandprayers #prayer #ChristianPodcast #ModernChristian #powerinprayer

Tradition vs. Traditionalism

Tradition vs. Traditionalism

Are we as a modern church following more tradition or traditionalism? In this episode, Nick discusses the two and how the Bible describes traditions. Most modern church traditions are new and have not always existed within the church. From songs, instruments, meeting houses, Sunday school, and the list goes on. All of those things have been changed or added to our regular church attendance or practices.
Nick discusses how to navigate this perspective when churches all around are operating in different ways. Is Sunday School or Small Groups the answer? Should the church use a guitar or a piano? Does any of it matter in how we worship God?
The premise of Tradition vs. Traditionalism is based on a quote referenced by Chuck Swindoll in which he quoted a Yale professor who said "Tradition is the living faith of those now dead. Traditionalism is the dead faith of those still living". Nick compares these two viewpoints as the following.
Traditions: Things established by God, Christ, or by others for a good purpose of edifying and uplifting the church. Ways we can worship, grow, and honor God.
Traditionalism: Things we do out of routine or a "have-to" mindset. Things we are told to do and never ask why or actions in the church that are expected to be done with no biblical precedent.
Two examples Nick gives is taking Communion where this is a biblically established action or tradition. Having a Sunday School class on the other hand could be either. Some churches opt to not have Sunday School while others do. Neither view is technically wrong but what the church does needs to be for the glory of God.

What Is Your Christian Growth Plan?

What Is Your Christian Growth Plan?

Do you have a growth plan as a Christian? This is not a common topic but in this episode, Nick looks to discuss this principle of personal development through a biblical worldview!
Christians should want to grow closer to Christ, and become stronger in their faith, but how do they do it? Through practical actions and the environments they put themselves in.
Nick discusses 4 key elements to a Christian growth plan and shares some of his growth plan with you in this episode.
1: Envinronment - Who are you surrounding yourself with and what places do you go to foster Christian growth?
2: Goals - Are you finding ways to grow or trying to find ways to be involved in ministry? Do not strive to do works just for works, ensure your personal walk with Christ is where it needs to be and He will open up ministry opportunities.
3: External Factors - How do you respond when people criticize your faith or how you live for Christ? Do you get frustrated and give up or do you push forward through the negativity?
4: Consistency and Application - Do you stay consistent in what you set out to do? Reading, study, prayer, involvement in church functions, etc. or do you waver and come and go as it's convenient? Then how do you apply what you learn and how you grow but helping others with it?

What Comes Next After Roe v. Wade?

What Comes Next After Roe v. Wade?

If you've been anywhere on social media or watching the news, then you know the Supreme Court of the United States overturned the ruling in Roe V. Wade this past week. This is a monumental decision by the Supreme Court and has major implications on states, government, elections, but also the modern church.
Where does the church go from here? Do they sit back and celebrate their victory? Do we turn our focus and attention to a new issue? Nick in this episode argues that neither is the answer. Roe v. Wade may have been overturned but it presents challenges for some, people are angry, and some disagree with the decision. Who can come in with help, love, encouragement, and support? The church.
The church in these modern times more than ever needs to go back to the roots of the early church and support those who are in need. Poverty, hunger, adoption, child care, and child supplies are all going to be more in need than ever. The church is in a prime position to show people that it wasn't just all talk. That the church is ready to step up and be leaders and ensure people have the assistance to raise their children and also to be a witness of the love of Christ.
The church is needed in our modern society. To show love, compassion, care, and to give to those in need. Paul describes in Romans how we are to love and any action without love is in vain. If the church supported overturning Roe v. Wade without the intention of showing love and support to those who have the other viewpoint, then we need to check up and examine our hearts to ensure we are showing love!

Helping Each Other Through An Economic Recession

Helping Each Other Through An Economic Recession

Hearing a lot of chatter about an economic #recession? It seems to be one of the hot topics and common points of fear for many people, including Christians! Nick in this episode briefly describes what a recession really is, are they uncommon, and how the modern Church can help each other through difficult times like the early church did.

We often forget that the early church did not have buildings, bills, or any set expenses typically. Instead, the offerings they took up went towards helping those in need within their group or possibly helping a missionary on their way. Nick discusses in this episode some practical ways to help people in your church that may be impacted during a recession.
Recessions can hit everyone. They can be severe or very mild. We do not know what to expect in the future but we can truth that God will bring us through and provide for us in what we need. Will you trust God if the economy goes sour? Or will you only trust Him during the good times? We all have to make the decision to truth God despite things around us looking bleak.
Nick encourages you to not buy into fear mongering, but instead, rely on God for provision!

The Importance of Being Connected to a Local Church

The Importance of Being Connected to a Local Church

Are you connected to a local church? Many people no longer see it as important or think a church is relevant. Are they right? In this episode, Nick discusses the reasons people are leaving the church and why it is still important to be connected to a local church.

People may leave a church for a number of reasons from being upset or offended, to just falling out of the habit and not making it a priority. Nick discusses the article by Lifeway 10 Reasons People Are Leaving Your Church and why Lifeway found people are no longer attending a church. Nick also discusses the reasons that it is important to stay connected to a church.
One of the most important reasons we need to remain connected to a church is that we limit our potential in growing for Christ! We limit our growth, our learning, our fellowship, our connections, our accountability, and more by not being part of a local church! This can cause a Christian's faith to waiver under pressure when they don't have a support system of a church to fall back on.

Why do Christians Suffer?

Why do Christians Suffer?

The question of "Why do bad things happen to good people?" comes up often in philosophical debates. Why does God allow Christians to experience hurt, disappointment, pain, and other types of suffering? In this episode, Nick discusses 3 ways that God can use suffering to bring good or for His purposes.
God can bring great lessons, blessings, and testimonies through the trials of life. The Christian's response to these struggles and difficulties can give demonstrate God's providence and blessings in helping His children through their struggles.
Nick in this episode compares the struggles of Paul, Joseph, and a blind man healed by Jesus as examples of how God can work through our struggles in life. Do you trust God in the middle of your suffering? Do you pray and ask Him for His will to be done in it? God may be working in a significant way but we cannot see it yet. God may be teaching us something and we are learning. God may be working His plan and we have to trust Him even when it isn't easy.

Determine Your Calling in Life

Determine Your Calling in Life

Determining what we are called to do or what God desires us to pursue can be a daunting task! From what career or vocation to pursue, what school to attend, and many other major life decisions. While God may not specific give you a sign that says to go to a specific school or to become a certain vocation, we can take practical steps to determine the natural gifts and abilities God has given to us.
Nick discusses steps to determine the natural gifts and abilities God gives to each of us. Once we understand or discover those gifts, we can then narrow down the calling God has placed on our life. It is not always obvious, God can reveal it to us in many ways. Nick discusses the most general ways to get you started on the path.
It is important we use the gifts God has given us and are fulfilled in life. Are you miserable in your job? Miserable thinking about your degree? Are you sure it is what you should be pursuing? If we are doing what we love and know that it is God's calling on our life it will not feel like work. It could be your job while not ideal is the means to allow you to perform ministry activities. God can give you peace or contentment in that position to allow you to fulfill your calling in ministry.
Examine your skills, pray and seek God's help, ask friends for advice, and evaluate what you know or have been told. Using those simple steps you can start to determine what your calling is, from there we all have to find how to use them in the right way to honor God.

Why Are Christians So Divided?

Why Are Christians So Divided?

The church often struggles with internal division. From denominations, affiliations, order of service, ministries, and the list goes on. Church members can be divided among themselves. Where does this division come from? It actually is not a new problem! It has existed for centuries and Paul dealt with it almost 2,000 years ago!

In 1 Corinthians chapter 1, Paul dealt with division over baptism. Paul has to remind the church at Corinth that the gospel and cause of Christ is not about who baptizes someone or who you affiliate with. It is about Christ and Christ alone. Nick uses this scripture, gives modern examples and comparisons to what Paul is describing.
This issue of division was not limited to only a certain group. It was Jews, Greeks, and Christians that all struggled with divisions but in different ways. Some of those ways people are divided have not changed. How do we overcome this division? We have to get our eyes back on Jesus. Focusing on him, the plan of salvation, and the gospel of Jesus Christ should be our primary focus! Falling in love with Jesus and what He has done for us should be our focus.
Tune in to this episode to hear Nick discuss Christian Division and Paul's addressing of this from 1 Corinthians.

What Is Discipleship Pt. 2 - Why Is It Important To Modern Christianity?

What Is Discipleship Pt. 2 - Why Is It Important To Modern Christianity?

In Part 2 of What is Discipleship, Nick looks at how the topic of Discipleship is important to the modern Christian. It is more than just a trendy buzzword, it is a lifestyle of living for Christ and growing in Christ. Nick addresses four (4) unique elements that impact a person's discipleship.
From the previous episode, Nick reminds everyone how Discipleship is about a relationship and it all starts there. From there discipleship continues and grows through (1) Prayer, (2) Reading and studying God's word, (3) Teaching and Preaching, (4) other relationships and accountability.
Our communication with God, to God, and hearing from Him are vital to the everyday Christian life. Reading and studying the Bible while also having an active prayer life keeps that line of communication open! Teaching and Preaching help edify the church and build them up. Relationships and accountability help Christians share their faith and be accountable in their walk with Christ.
Do you have a relationship with Christ? Do you read and study your Bible? Are you sharing your faith with others or have an accountability partner? What can you do to be discipled better or to help disciple others?A statistic about Discipleship shared at the end of the episode. If you add 20 people per year to the church for 20 years. You add 20,000 people to the church. If you disciple 1 person per year, then they go on to disciple 1 per year, and that cycle continues. over 1 million, yes, 1,000,000, people would be discipled in 20 years.

What Is Discipleship Pt. 1

Nick addresses the concern with using this term as just a buzzword like a hashtag on social media. It has become trendy and commonplace to throw the term discipleship around without really a good explanation or description of what the term means. Spoiler alert! It is much deeper than the dictionary definition! Tune in to Part 1 of What Is Discipleship to learn more about this term and what it is.

Part 2 coming 2/21 will address in more detail how this is impactful to our modern society and why it is important to use and disciple others. Stay tuned and join Nick again next week for part 2!
