48. Ep. 48 - Advocate of the Month: Marinda Spencer

This week we are highlighting our July Advocate of the Month — Marinda Spencer!

We started this initiative within our coalition to give our programs the opportunity to showcase and celebrate the amazing advocates that they have on staff. Advocacy is a difficult job and they are such a fundamental part of supporting survivors, so we wanted to make sure that our advocates across New Mexico know that we see them and value their hard work and dedication to the cause.

Alexis was nominated by her peers at Battered Families Services, Inc. for her work as a legal advocate in Gallup, New Mexico. Read more about her in our NMCADV Spotlight! And if you're interested in the band Weedrat mentioned in the episode, you can find them on Facebook.

You can learn more about Battered Families Services, Inc. at batteredfamilies.com. For immediate assistance, you can reach their office at (505) 722-7483.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, there is help available. Please call The Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or visit their website on a safe device at www.thehotline.org. With the recent overturning of Roe v Wade, NMCADV felt it necessary to start a very important discussion.

NMCADV’s David Garvin facilitates leading voices in domestic violence. Dr. Carolyn West, Jessica Nunan, and Scott Miller join us to talk about how this is going to affect survivors of domestic violence.

We address how power and control presents in abusive relationships and how domestic abusers will use the recent ruling of Roe v. Wade to control and ultimately abuse their partners.

6. Ep. 6 - Advocate of the Month: Clarissa Sierra

This week we are highlighting one of our advocates of the month.

This is part two of a two-part episode to honor two amazing advocates that were nominated by Linda Tollefson of El Refugio Inc. in Silver City, New Mexico. Linda nominated both Diana Gordillo and Clarissa Sierra for their outstanding work and we are honored to have them as our April Advocates of the Month.

Clarissa's Bio:

"Clarissa Sierra is a 28-year-old mother of two beautiful and outgoing daughters, Serenity and Savannah, and is the youngest of her 3 older brothers and twin sister.

Clarissa is always up for a good laugh and spending time with her family and friends especially when it comes to being her daughters’ biggest fan on the side lines at sporting events they partake in. Before starting at El Refugio, Inc. she served 8 years in the New Mexico Army National Guard and was a Detention Officer for 4 years with the County of Grant.

Clarissa became a Victim Advocate with El Refugio, Inc. in January of 2021 and since then has helped with empowering many survivors of domestic violence and their families. As a victim advocate with El Refugio, Inc. she assists domestic violence survivors in getting domestic violence protection orders, supports them through the court process, and she also spends many hours doing outreach in her community. As a survivor of domestic violence herself, Clarissa is dedicated to the cause of empowering survivors, being a voice against domestic violence and spreading awareness in her community."

3. Ep. 3 - Membership Spotlight: ENIPC Peacekeepers Domestic Violence Program

NMCADV is a coalition made up of around 30 domestic violence providers around the state of New Mexico. We are so happy to highlight our programs and their hard-work through this podcast.

This week we are talking with Ernest Frenier, a BIP facilitator, for ENIPC Peacekeepers Domestic Violence Program.

Ernest's Bio:

"Ernest Frenier is a Batterers Intervention Facilitator with ENIPC PeaceKeepers Program. He has spent his life helping people within his community. Growing up experiencing domestic violence as a child he knows how domestic violence can affect every facet of one’s life as well as the lives of loved ones. His focus is working with offenders of abuse to end the often times deadly cycle of violence. He knows that there is no single approach that works for everyone, so he continues to attend the most up to date trainings and webinars to educate himself to provide the best help for his programs participants and their individual needs. He has received certifications by both New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women for Core Advocacy. He has also completed the Art of Facilitation Training through the Family Peace Initiative."
