Eastern AHSN (Academic Health Science Network) is funded by the NHS and the Office for Life Sciences to bring together academia, citizens, health services and industry to realise the value of innovations in the healthcare sector more quickly. We are uniquely placed in the East of England to support health and life sciences research and technology and innovation in healthcare. To find out more, I spoke with Dr Lou Jopling from Eastern AHSN about their organisation.

NHS reservists are members of the public who have signed up to work for the NHS. People currently working as NHS reservists have taken up roles in COVID-19 and flu vaccination programmes, helped to run hospital wards and supported the running of their local NHS services. To find out more, I spoke with Sarah Kench - Reservist and Workforce Supply Manager for the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board - all about how the scheme is running in our area.

If you use GPs and hospitals, dentists, pharmacies, care homes or other services, Healthwatch is the organisation who want to gather your feedback. Healthway captures the experiences of people who use our local services, to shape, influence and improve local care.

ICSs have existed in one form or another since 2016, but for most of this time have operated as informal partnerships using soft power and influence to achieve their objectives. Following the passage of the 2022 Health and Care Act, ICSs were formalised as legal entities with statutory powers and responsibilities. So to find out a bit more, I spoke with Dr Andrew Kelso who is the Medical Director for the NHS Suffolk and North East Essex ICB Board.

Personalised care means that patients have more control and choice when it comes to the way their care is planned and delivered, taking into account individual needs, preferences and circumstances. It is a whole system approach that enables a variety of services across the health, social care, public health and community spectrum to be integrated around the individual in order to deliver better outcomes and experiences.

There are many different aspects of personalised care. Shared decision making between clinicians and patients – working collaboratively to reach a decision about treatment that best suits the patient.

The rollout of the COVID vaccination was a miraculous success for the NHS; to find out more about how the programme was delivered locally, Physician Associate James Catton spoke with deputy director Liz Moloney about her part in the vaccine programme.
