An Overview of Trauma with Dr Johnson Tam-Lit | Momentum Mental Health Series

An Overview of Trauma with Dr Johnson Tam-Lit | Momentum Mental Health Series

#MentalHealth #Trauma #BrainHealth

Trauma affects us all. Everyone, at some point, will experience it.

This zoom presentation is a small overview of what it can look like. Our autonomic nervous system is affected without us being aware of it.

Past traumatic memories awake when our brains get triggered into hyper-vigilant states.

If you have not been traumatised by an event recently, then the chances are you will be soon.

I will discuss some principles of dealing with traumatic events and maintaining good mental health.

I'll also discuss how traumatic events affect children's ability to learn and feel safe.

This is not meant to advise individual cases; if you are affected by anything mentioned, please seek professional help.

How Knowledge and Mindset Brings Faster Recovery | with Chartered Physiotherapist Peter Tylinkski

How Knowledge and Mindset Brings Faster Recovery | with Chartered Physiotherapist Peter Tylinkski

#mindset #10%rule #recovery

Early in 2022, Peter herniated three of his lumbar vertebrae, which caused a great deal of pain and a time of immobility. Being an experienced physiotherapist, he understood the injury's seriousness and what was needed to regain his health.

In today's episode, he describes something of that journey which was remarkable not only in that his issue was resolved but also in an accelerated timeframe.

Knowing what to do is different from taking the necessary and challenging steps. Peter's story highlights the mindset needed to regain health, but it can be applied in many different areas of our lives.

He shares how he applied the 10% rule to his exercises and how these small incremental steps worked to fool his body into gradually improving. He also talks about the importance of not trying to push through the pain but simultaneously recognising the difference between discomfort and pain.  Peter talks about micro-improvements in a very practical way.

The formula he used: His current reality +10%change x time = significant changes

We also discuss how homeostasis can hinder and why the rest phases are fundamental, especially in advancing years. Peter also talks about how he used the tech in his phone to offload the need to remember what actions he needed to take. A critical point in a hyper-busy world.

As always, it's essential to know that this does not constitute medical advice. In any situation, it's always important to seek medical advice early.

Phillip Goodman - Discovering Wild Camping in Nevada, USA | Momentum Resilient Life Talks #30

Phillip Goodman - Discovering Wild Camping in Nevada, USA | Momentum Resilient Life Talks #30

In this episode, we talked to Phillip Goodman, a wild campaign and nature lover from Santa Clarita, CA, a large suburb in the mountains 30 miles (48km) northwest of Los Angeles, CA.

We learn about nature in his part of the world, and Phil has given us great tips for our next adventure on the North West coast of Scotland.

As a young boy, Phillip would open the gate from his backyard and step into wild, undeveloped mountains. There he’d climb through hills, build forts on giant oak trees, and hike through the many trails carved in the mountains.

After graduating from Long Beach State Univ. in 2007 with degrees in broadcast journalism and creative writing, Phillip stayed in Long Beach, CA. He found new solace in biking along the beaches of sunny SoCal and kayaking the marinas and bays of Newport, Huntington, and Long Beach. Phillip’s college roommate re-introduced him to the joys of camping by adventuring north to the Kern River Valley and Sequoia National Forest. Since then, Phillip (and his equally adventurous girlfriend of seven years) have been camping and kayaking their way through Northern Nevada and Northern CA.

Professionally, Phillip is the play-by-play broadcaster for Reno’s semi-pro men’s ice hockey team and the backup public address announcer for Reno’s minor league baseball team.

Design Your Movement. It Can Save Your Life | MLC | Beyond Fitness with Dr. Johnson Tam-Lit

#movementmatters #trustmovement #moveyourbody

Movement brings benefits. But as we move from childhood to adulthood, we become more sedentary.

This may seem obvious, but it does not have to be inevitable. You can design your environment to facilitate movement and build up small moments of micro-movements; in a lifetime, the effects matter.

Something as simple as where you put your plates in the kitchen can influence your health. The more conveniences we have, the less we move. In time, we resort to going to the gym for exercise to replace the lost movement.

Check out some simple ways of reintroducing movement without stress or willpower. And as you do more of these, your health and wellbeing will benefit.

How Touch Builds Resilience

How Touch Builds Resilience

How Touch Builds Resilience

Can touch make a difference in your life?

The science says yes. How you give and receive touch shapes you as a person. Gentle touch, in particular, increases immunity and lowers blood pressure and stress levels.

Here we look at how it affects our lives and wellbeing.

This episode presents an overview of the neuroscience of gentle touch and what is the connection between touch and pain fibres in our bodies.

What’s the connection between touch and your autonomic nervous system - the sympathetic and parasympathetic?

What about if you have bad experiences with touch; is there anything you can do?

Remember that giving touch can set up a positive feedback loop, helping others while getting something back simultaneously.

Find out how we develop from babies to adulthood, why we move from touch to sight and sound, what some self-soothing practices are, how these affect performance and thinking, and what are some of the hormones released by touch and their effects.

Building Resilience in Nature Using Cold Water Swimming | Part 2

Helen O'Connor talks about how forest therapy helps in reducing anxiety.

We explore the science behind how the patterns within nature soothe the autonomic system and move us from an on-edge to a rest and digest state.

Helen shares her experience of swimming all year round in the River Nidd in the beautiful surroundings of the Yorkshire Dales.

She talks about the practicalities of swimming in cold environments, especially from a safety perspective.

For anyone interested, Helen O'Connor details why focussing on her breathing is a vital piece in acclimatising to the temperature. We touch on full immersion and, most importantly, recognising when it is time to get out.

Helen is a Registered Psychologist who has also trained as an Integrative Forest Therapy practitioner.

She supports people to connect more deeply with nature for well-being. She shows how we build a reciprocal relationship with nature and each other.

Finding Your Resilience in Nature | Part 1 | With Psychologist Helen O'Connor | MRL Talks #27

Finding Your Resilience in Nature | Part 1 | With Psychologist Helen O'Connor | MRL Talks #27

Finding Your Resilience in Nature | Part 1

Helen is a Registered Psychologist who has also trained as an Integrative Forest Therapy practitioner.

She supports people to connect more deeply with nature for well-being and shows how to build a reciprocal relationship with nature.

Helen talked with me in a beautiful area within Nidderdale, North Yorkshire. She defined a sanctuary in nature as a healing space that is more than its beauty. She described what it means to find a "sit spot" and how it helps her relax and rejuvenate.

We discuss the difference between the practice of forest bathing and forest therapy, both of which Helen O'Connor takes people through.

She describes why forest bathing in nature is a more straightforward process to follow than other forms of rejuvenation.

Helen explains the essence of nature as an unlearning, a way of being, not doing. She invited me to mirror the movements in nature, be it the swaying of the trees or sensing the sun's warmth.

We discuss how Forest Therapy is used in alleviating depression and helping people to build momentum and resilience.

She also mentions some of the research and science behind this ancient practice.

Helen O'Connor can be found at: https://seedsofcompassion.uk/

In summary, forest bathing benefits include:

- Reduces levels of stress and anxiety (Leibold 2021, Song et al. 2020)

- Effective short-term intervention for reduction and prevention of depression in adults (Rosa et al. 2020)

- Improved well-being measured through Heart Rate Variability (HRV) – (McEwan et al. 2021)

- Improves creativity and higher cognitive level functioning (Yu and Hsieh 2020)

- Boosts your immune system (Li 2010) - Reduces blood pressure (Yau and Loke 2020)

- Increases Natural Killer cells (important for fighting tumours and viruses) and intracellular anti-cancer proteins, through phytoncides – essential oils given off by trees (Li et al. 2008)

- Improves sleep (Kwanda et al 2015)

Dr Johnson Tam-Lit - Why Settle for Happiness When You Can Have JOY? Momentum Resilient Life Shorts

#joy #thereismore #enjoy

Have you ever thought about the differences between Joy and happiness?

There is a sea of differences between the two.

And that difference makes a difference in how we approach life and approach obstacles. This episode gives a few thoughts to chew on.

Happiness compared to joy is like sugar vs oats. Both are carbohydrates. Sugar gives an instant dopamine rush that is often followed by a crash. Oats are not the most appealing or attractive, but they are slow-release and longer-lasting in energy. That’s joy.

Experiencing joy makes us more resilient in ourselves and more of a pleasure to be around.

How do you find joy?

Do tell.

Dr Clara Russell - Find Your Way Through Perimenopausal Brain Fog - Momentum R L Talks #24

#mentalhealth #lifechoices #energy

Clara Russell has been on the frontline of the NHS as a GP. She describes the challenges and the needs of women in the peri-menopausal period.

In this episode, she talks about why women come to a GP, from hot flushes to anxiety to sleep disturbances.

Yet, with the interplay of the variety of symptoms plus an over-stretched NHS, the mainstay of treatments offered are pharmaceuticals. These include HRT, antidepressants and sedatives for sleep, but as Dr Russell explains, they have a role to play but come with their side effects.

She tells us about the role of supplementation in general as something in addition to good lifestyle medicine advice and not something to use instead of the healthy choices that are needed. These include decision-making, energy levels, and how these play into people’s lifestyle choices and changes.

Dr Russell shares her knowledge regarding brain fog and the role of hormones in this period of life. In the second half of the episode, we do a deep dive into a number of the key ingredients in FOGO, a product that she is introducing as a part of helping peri-menopausal women.

She unpacks the role that vitamins B6, B12 and B5 play at this time of life. She also explained what adaptogens and botanicals bring to the table.

Robert H - From Heart Attack to a Health - Momentum Resilient Life Talks #23

#Health #Fitness #Resilience #Momentum From Heart Attack to Health

Heart attacks can happen to anyone at any time. After a body attack class, Robert had his heart attack in the gym changing room.

It’s not usual to see a man in his early 40s kneeling on the changing room floor, calling for an ambulance and then lying in a classroom with a cleaner vacuuming around him.

Robert, in many ways an ordinary bloke, describes what his lifestyle was like before the episode in November.

Robert tells about how he started his recovery by walking up the hills around his home in South London. He then progressed to restarting his running in January, some six weeks after his heart attack.

A story of hope and resilience.

Nicole Gibson - How Love Transforms Health and Entrepreneurship - Momentum Resilient Life Talks #21

Nicole Gibson is a millennial entrepreneur whose core message is love. She talks of how love is the foundation of her recovery from anorexia nervosa and forms the cornerstone of her entrepreneurial journey. According to Nicole, living whole-heartedly is liberating. Still, it is not simply living free from pain but being able to view tribulation as an integral part of the journey.

Nicole tells with honesty and conviction of finding spiritual sustenance along the way that allowed her to know that she was not her diagnosis. Finding a “guardian angel” in the form of a school principal is well worth hearing about. And through what this man did for her allowed Nicole to have an experience of what servant leadership meant.

Nicole tells of her entrepreneurial journey in terms of trusting her inner self in discerning when to accept or decline investments no matter how attractive the offer or how desperate the need is. According to Nicole Gibson, what you are creating and what state you are creating from is equally important.

Nicole Gibson was a finalist for the Young Australian of the Year at 20 years old and listed as one of Australia’s top 100 most influential women at 21, shortly after taking out the Pride of Australia Medal. She made the front cover of The Financial Review and the Yellow Pages.

She is a fierce ambassador for mental health, innovation, and connection. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer of The Rogue & Rouge Foundation and recently completed three terms as the youngest Commonwealth Commissioner for Mental Health.

In 2016 Nicole completed her first international speaking tour, speaking at institutions like Oxford University and The Anna Freud Centre. That tour itinerary included Europe, the USA and Central/South America.

Ershad read for us one of his poems entitled Choose Your Fears Wisely which speaks directly to the listeners of being aware of the inner life and from that core to work relentlessly in pursuit of the possible.

Curiosity and a hunger for new experiences have kept  Ershad moving forward to a present that involves hosting a podcast series where his goal is to encourage personal creativity and problem-solving. Dr Sue Smith - Lifestyle Medicine in Nature - Momentum Talks #14

#momentum #resilience #mentalhealth

Sue Smith has a combination of 30+ years of front-line medical experience along with the latest lifestyle medicine and coaching training. By integrating knowledge and behaviour change expertise her focus is on creating a sustained, significant impact in the lives of her clients.

Sue shares with us her involvement with the organisation Walk with a Doc. Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behaviour change in the clinical setting, Dr Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move.

Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee, and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event.  Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide.

In this episode, Sue Smith talks about the benefits that she’s seen in the people who have participated in the course of doing this in her local area of Birkenhead. She highlights the ease with which people can make changes to their health as well as helping to build communities that help to relieve isolation and loneliness.

Do you know the distinction between absence of disease and wellness? - Momentum Resilient Life Shorts

When I was a medical student, it was all about learning what was wrong, and we looked at it in terms of dysfunction. On the other hand, wellness looks at how well you are, and there is a significant distinction between disease and wellness.

The absence of disease doesn’t mean that you are well. There is a spectrum…

Dr Clara Russell - From Essential to Optimum Nutrition - Momentum Talks #13

As the founder of Noggin The Brain People, Clara Russell is on a mission to help improve the cognitive health of the nation. In this episode, Clara describes the journey of her medical training to become a GP before becoming interested in at the time side issues of lifestyle medicine and sleep studies. After nearly 20 years of experience in both NHS and Private medicine, she has stepped aside from clinical practice to focus on brain health and helping people understand what they can do to help themselves feel better and look after their brains in the longer term.

Dr Russell talks about the difference between essential nutrition and optimal nutrition. And how this difference led her with the help of an experienced nutritionist formulate the ingredients necessary to create a range of brain-enhancing supplements.

With a diagnosis of MS, she had the dual perspective of patient and physician which inspired her to investigate other ways of helping patients beyond what was on offer in 2017.

We discuss some of the shortfalls embedded in the healthcare system and the greater recognition for stress management.

In the end, Clara shares her vision for Noggins and the way forward in terms of research and development.

Dr Russell studied Medicine at Newcastle University and completed GP training in the North East of England. She has studied Sleep Medicine at Edinburgh University and Functional medicine with the Institute of Functional Medicine in the US.

The roots of Noggin are personal - Clara and her family members have been affected by brain affecting conditions and this was the trigger for Clara to look deeper into lifestyle, functional medicine and the importance of sleep, nutrition, and mindset in looking after our brains.

Dr Koge - Leadership Development and Resilient Education - Momentum Talks #11

Dr Henry Koge, more than anyone I've met to date, exemplifies humility in action. He lives what it means to live a resilient life.

In this episode, Henry takes us on an educational and informative journey through his childhood and onto his PhD studies in Leadership and Education at one of the world's leading universities.

When asked what his life vision is, the reply is to change the education system. In this case, it means the whole system from teachers to pupils of all ages, the curriculum, teaching processes, etc.

Henry Koge models a radically different way of philanthropy, not from a position of material success but from a place of growing others while growing oneself.   He talks about community learning and growing in tandem with the individual.

He shares how his Christian faith interacts with his work in empowering his actions and decision-making.

Some quotable quotes, of which there are many:

"The key is what you are trying to obtain vs what you are trying to experience; that is what motivates you to continue moving forward.

"Physical poverty is not the same as a poverty mindset. The latter is far more powerful."

"Hold yourself accountable to yourself."

"Don't speak problems; speak solutions."

"When you mess up, don't stay in 'BED' too long (Blame - Excuse - Deny).

Gail Donnan - Dealing with Trauma: A Body-Centred Approach - Momentum Talks #7

The headline spaces are full of Covid-19 and its direct and indirect effects on our physical health are something no one can deny.   Yet we are in the middle of two pandemics. The less publicised one is the effect on our mental health and the trauma we as a society face.  In this episode, we talk about why the medical model of trauma doesn’t work as it separates the physical and mental as discrete entities.

Gail shares how the bottom-up or somatic approach works by helping people become more aware of body sensations and working to release the underlying trauma.  We unpack links between our autonomic nervous system and social connections. Looking at why building a feeling of safety is key to healing trauma.

We talk about work done in the Trauma Centre, Ripon where all of the different practitioners are “trauma-informed”. Then discuss the outreach monthly events that are open to the public.

Gail Donnan is a trauma-informed EMDR psychotherapist who has been working in the wellness industry since 1995. She holds a Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Psychology.  As well as being the Director of the Trauma Centre, Ripon North Yorkshire, she is a qualified teacher, assessor and IQA.

Gail specialises in mental health issues arising from trauma, anxiety, depression and is the author of two books:  "The Gateway - A journey to reclaim your power from Stress and Anxiety" and ; "The Gateway Junior Edition" -  which focuses on children's mental health

Biofeedback Builds Resilience - Momentum Mental Health Series (Pt.5)

Biofeedback Builds Resilience - Momentum Mental Health Series (Pt.5)

All of us know of things that run in the background like the boiler in our homes or the engine under the bonnet of our cars.

They operate without us knowing what they do, we don’t see them.

But we are connected to and affected by them.  In the same way, our minds, emotions, and physiology-heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing-are connected.

Biofeedback systems allow us to see under the bonnet. It makes the invisible visible. Perhaps more importantly it shows that we can have control over and alter things.

Conditions as widely varied as asthma, chronic pain, and irritable bowel syndrome seem to respond to biofeedback training.

By seeing and measuring changes we are motivated to believe. We can build (more) perseverance.  Our minds and bodies have always been linked, only now we can visualise the link, take action, and be empowered. As we do these things resilience grows.

How to hack anxiety? Momentum Mental Health Series (Pt.4)

In this episode, we will look at how journaling can help you to hack anxiety.

Anxiety is built on faulty memories. We all have them. We remember things not as they were but on how we were feeling at that point in time.

For stressful past events, the emotions attached get relived every time they come to mind.

Putting these events on paper or apps brings a distance, it allows for the possibility of reinterpreting past stress differently. On paper, positive memories become more so. This gives a lift and boost to wellbeing and encourages a lifestyle of hope.

This episode is about the power of journaling. It’s packed with tips on how journalling works. Done with the right approach can make a significant difference in our lives.
