27 - Listener Bonsai Brainstorm - More metal pots, spring prep, and more!

In today's episode, Kevin, Kelly, and Ryan met up to share recent listener questions and submitted tree pictures. There was vigorous discussion online about Benjamin Keating's work potting bonsai into metal sculptures which we talked with Ben about in the last episode. Many listeners wondered about the viability of these trees long-term, so we posed the question to Ben and relayed his response to go deeper into that subject. Many listeners also submitted questions surrounding spring topics such as how to identify good bonsai styles or techniques when working with a new species and how to dig wild bonsai aka "yamadori". Lastly, Kevin and Ryan shared some pots and trees to discuss style options and considerations when for matching trees to pots as the repotting season gets underway around the northern hemisphere.

20 - Bonsai Stories and Other BS with Dennis Makashima! Part 3

20 - Bonsai Stories and Other BS with Dennis Makashima! Part 3

In this episode of the Bonsai Time Podcast, Kevin and Ryan welcome Dennis Makashima. Dennis has been a witness and active participant in bonsai history as he learned from many of the greats of California Bonsai and even inherited many of their trees. Although Dennis is a second-generation Japanese American, he found himself drawn into the same line of work as many Japanese were at that time - gardening and aesthetic tree pruning. This is what ultimately drew him into bonsai and eventually a bonsai apprenticeship in Japan. Ultimately Dennis' own contributions to the art stand proud as he taught aesthetic tree pruning at Merritt College and served as president for the Golden State Bonsai Federation. Dennis also went into great detail regarding how he worked to improve GBSF during his tenure for the clubs and local scene. We hope you enjoy his many BS stories as much as we did!

The video version is available here: https://youtu.be/MpqON33Y9zg

See you in the next episode! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guest Info: Dennis Makashima is a long-time pillar of the Bay Area and the greater California bonsai scene. We are grateful for his time and for sharing his experiences! You can learn more about Dennis' life story in his upcoming autobiographical book "Mr. Omoshiori: Journal of a Sansei Baby Boomer and Bonsai Sensei". The book will come out in early 2024. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Angelica Ramirez is a bright new face in the bonsai scene. As Kevin and I learned in our interview, Angelica is a uniquely driven person with expertise in music, helicopter piloting, archery, painting, bonsai ceramics, and more recently she is set on learning bonsai to the highest degree possible. Angelica has been an apprentice at the Chicago Botanic Garden's bonsai collection and this year she is the new National Bonsai Apprentice at the US National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington, DC. 14 - Aussie Natives and Bonsai as Art with Hugh Grant

In today's interview, we had the honor of hosting Hugh Grant from Australia who came on to share his story and thoughts on the evolution of bonsai in Australia and around the World. Hugh explained how his background as an art student led him to study at Bonsai Mirai and shapes how he thinks about modern bonsai displays. Hugh also taught Ryan and Kevin about the diversity of Australian ecosystems and the native trees there which make for decent bonsai once you learn their quirks! Hope you enjoy and get as much out of this talk as we did.

04 - Apprentice Talk & Bonsai Brainstorming with Julian Tsai & Andy Bello

In the fourth episode of the Bonsai Time Podcast, Ryan shares an old interview from May of 2020 with other noteworthy bonsai apprentices, Andy Bello of the US National Bonsai & Penjing Museum and Julian Tsai of Fujikawa Kouka-en Bonsai Nursery in Japan. Parts of this interview have already been released as a pilot test for what is now the Bonsai Time Podcast, however, in today's release of the full discussion, the latter half includes a never before heard bonsai brainstorm in which Andy, Julian, and Ryan offered ideas for trees which were submitted to us by our readers.

01 - A Conversation with Dan Robinson

01 - A Conversation with Dan Robinson

In the inaugural episode of the Bonsai Bonsai Time Podcast, Kevin and I interviewed my bonsai teacher, Dan Robinson. Dan has had a long career in bonsai where he has assumed many roles. He was a founding member of the Puget Sound Bonsai Association, a pioneer in collecting American native yamadori, a trail-blazer in naturalistic bonsai, a lifelong acolyte of ancient trees, the creator of Elandan Gardens in Bremerton, WA, and the subject of the book Gnarly Branches, Ancient Trees by Will Hiltz. This history of Dan's life in bonsai and more is the subject of this interview.
See you in the next episode!
