5. Fear, Failure & Parenting Teens: Kelly Kent

5. Fear, Failure & Parenting Teens: Kelly Kent

You’re listening to Juggling Joy, a podcast for parents who know... the juggle is real. I’m your host Karen Jane DeWitt and in this episode I got to sit down with Kelly Kent, a mom of 4 teenagers. I love this interview because as a mom of a kindergartener and a toddler, I got to hear the wisdom of someone who’s ahead of me on their parenting journey.
She talks about what led to a sharp turn in her relationship with her eldest daughter, the impact of fear on their relationship, and what she would do differently if she had to do it all over again. Stick around to the end for a bonus two-minute interview with my five AND A HALF year old son, who tells me what it’ll be like to be a teenager.
Just a warning before we get started, this episode has mentions of eating disorders, self-harm, and suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health crisis, call the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988.

3. Sobriety, Tacos & Why You’re Actually Still Cool: Chuy Zarate

3. Sobriety, Tacos & Why You’re Actually Still Cool: Chuy Zarate

In today’s episode of Juggling Joy I sit down with Chuy Zarate to chat about his parenting journey both before and after sobriety. We talk quite a bit about tacos and vomit, but lucky for you, not at the same time. Also, he says I'm still cool even though I drink Starbucks and can't stay up past 9pm!
Because Chuy is a politician, we do discuss some local politics. Something that I’m working on personally is not allowing political conversations to derail me emotionally.
I believe that the political IS personal, so it makes perfect sense that these very personal topics of human rights, the health of our school systems, and where our tax money goes, trigger an emotional response. But what happens is, we let that emotion wash over us and we stop listening. We stop looking for solutions. We stop seeing the human being on the other side of the conversation. And our communities become more and more divided.
So, I’m inviting you now to join me in stretching in this way. When you get to that part of the episode, simply NOTICE how your listening changes. If you find yourself walling up, having a conversation with yourself in your mind, wanting to reach for the pause button, consider what it would be like to soften.
Disagreement is uncomfortable! But it's ok to be uncomfortable. We can learn how to BE WITH it. Because discomfort is where growth lives. It’s where understanding occurs. It’s where solutions are born.
Now that I’ve made it sound really intense, let me just say that this isn’t a super serious episode and we do laugh a lot, and I hope you do too. Thank you for being here and enjoy!
