There’s no question about it. Brain studies indicate that we respond to social approval in much the same way that we respond to monetary rewards Praise feels good. Done right, this sort of praise can inspire us to keep working at challenging tasks. Process praise can also foster the most essential attitude for success — the belief that we can improve ourselves through effort.

A little bit of a French , because this is a French word. Why is it important? Being better at building a communication relationship is something we all value.

One of those days? How to change your mood..

Sometimes we just aren’t feeling it are we And we would rather feel better…

So this episode talks about ways we can change our mood. moods come and go as we know and it depends why we have landed where we are.. if we have a mental illness or a recent bereavement we have every reason to be feeling a certain way or presenting in a certain way.

But at other times we know we want to shake off a certain way of thinking and there are things we can do to help ourselves. Also want to give a nod to toxic positivity?

A bad day doesn’t mean a bad life it’s a moment Go outside , look at nature, have a nice coffee, hot chocolate or something to sooth your mind for a moment and change your state.

You are not your thoughts, it’s a passing visitor and may be unhelpful “ deliveries for neighbours in the middle of a virtual meeting” or helpful “reminder to send a friend that card “ Thoughts are random

Feeling are not facts… NLP can defiantly help with that and Timeline therapy… is worth looking into… We both can do this… so shout out if you’re interested.

So take a moment, stand up, or sit on a bench if you’re out , gaze at the sky, a leaf, your favourite picture or photo and remember how it is to feel contented.

“when that felt good”. Take an imaginary photo of that moment. Remembering how you felt, what was happening, was the sun shining? Were people laughing? What could you hear, see and feel… maybe even smell, baking bread, freshly mown grass for example.

Now in NLP we help you to Anchor this feeling to press on one of your knuckles when that contented and lovely feeling is present. Say to yourself ”I’m saving this great feeling for later” and do just that…

Everyone has these in their lives. What makes a conversation a tricky one ?  is it how you feel?

How you make it into a Greek Tragedy, a bit of Feta gets a mention, sending food back in restaurants. An example is given of Annual leave requests .

A list of tips is talked through. A major part of NLP and the study of success is how we communicate with ourselves and others. Did you know that most of our communication is done through body language? A whopping 55%! 38% is via the tone of the voice and only 7% is attributed to words. This Is not to say that words are not important…. they are.

“have you got a minute” is discussed.

Using a gentle tone, making a list beforehand, keep to the facts, don’t generalise.

Start with the Why, Your Why. The ownership and using I statements. What is that your aiming for? Your desired outcomes.

Be a good listener. For a good two way conversation. So have those Bridging conversations.

In this week’s episode Kate and Tina discuss scales and how they can be used,

How to use them is discussed, that they are not comparisons with others

How they can allow you to feel more in control of your “state” or “mood” or “thinking”  The pain scale gets a mention. As does Nits, a Banana.

So lets take a scale we know from health care you may have experienced as a patient or a practitioner . Pain scale

On a 1-10… etc.. although NLP wise it might be more helpful to speak of your levels of comfort instead of using the word pain.

On a 1-10 with one being nope no energy to do this at all and 10 being firing on all cylinders and up for it… where are you… really.

You might be saying yep I’m a 9 but acting like a 3……

So next great question to ask in either of this examples s… what would raise the score?

Can you do something to raise the score?

Because at the end of the day you… and only you really know how you’re feeling about how much energy, momentum etc you have for change.

This can also help with leading a team who may “collectively catastrophise how busy they are.A leader might say …

“So Team on a 1-10 with 1 being nothing happening give us more to do and 10 being we haven’t got time to be in this meeting.. crazy busy.”

How busy are we?

How busy do we wish to be?

How can we manage a number (score) we don’t like into a better place?

This is a great tool for life and work. And Kate and Tina talk about end of life too.

Coping with Overwhelm

So Hop on in the back and get a lift to work. In this weeks episode Kate and Tina discuss Overwhelm letting people know its ok to feel like this.  It also helps to remember that feeling overwhelmed doesn’t have to last.

Felix’ the cat, with her cat dementia pays a visit.

The negative emotions are discussed and grief. Being present . take one step at a time and Focus on the now.

Sounds easy but we know it’s a challenge.

Kate talks us through a gentle affirmation to help us feel better. You can try this for yourself.

Or Try and tune into the now and imagine your hovering like a drone above a house  and there is a lot of activity in all the other rooms or being above a forest

They explore the idea of a brain dump empty your mind on to piece of paper. Write down absolutely everything that is on your mind don't stop until you have nothing left to write down. Act as if you are a bottle that has had the cork taken out and keep going until you are for an run out of fizz. do not undertake any analysis until you have completed all the writing down.

Assign three tasks ask the most urgent which have to be completed today. In addition to these three tasks assign at least one task as important

Celebrate all the things that you did and without focusing on what you didn’t manage.  

A suggestion to listen to your favourite playlist or putting a calming music in the background of the office this will lift your mood and distract you momentarily from all the thoughts whizzing around in your head.  

Stop telling yourself that you're overwhelmed. there might be a lot to do but you are labelling yourself as feeling a certain way.

Move your body, move walk to the toilet furthest away from your office, or just walk outside round the building then back in again to give yourself some fresh air and a change of perspective

Create a “no” list. Protecting your time and space can help give you a sense of control over your schedule. Healthy boundaries are crucial for your wellbeing!

Learning as we go… is ok and so is a growth mindset.

Ask the question, why is it taking me so long? Or is there anything that “really” needs to be improved? Is it good enough? The square of control and influence we have.

Trying as a step in the right direction and neuroplasticity and not succeeding straight away is ok, that’s how we learn.
