"Aiight, The Election Is Over. What Comes Next?" Featuring Morgan Harper and Cam Harris

This special episode of Columbus Can't Wait was recorded just two weeks after the mid-term elections. Now that the dust has settled and the results are in, we know that the house has flipped, Georgia is headed to another runoff, the GOP ran the table in Ohio, Democrats kept the senate, the Red Wave was more like a splash, Pelosi is stepping down and Trump is Running again.

But what does that really mean in the grand scheme of things? On this special edition episode of CCW, we were joined by Morgan Harper and Cam Harris to really break down the election, the Ohio Senate race (Tim Ryan's AND Sherrod Brown's), House Leadership, rising stars in the Ohio Democratic party, Trump 🙃, and alot more.

The election was not a finish line--it was a starting point. There is A LOT of work to do if we are going to keep our democracy. And as always, remember that you either do politics or politics are going to do you.

S3E2: The Our Bar Episode W/ Marlon Anthony

In this week's episode, we talked to Our Bar's Marlon Anthony about what happened to Columbus' favorite watering hole. The Olde Towne East neighborhood bar and lounge—named aptly as a space for the city's Black residents, but fully accepting of the wider community—quickly became a city gem since opening in 2019. But you couldn't tell that from how Our Bar was forced to close. The story behind Our Bar's "closing" is unfortunately nothing new for Black spaces, and reflective of the challenges Black folks face just by existing where they historically have for decades, but are apparently no longer welcome. Welcome back to Columbus Can't Wait! We are in the lab again, kicking off Season 3 with friend of the show Kaleem Musa! Kaleem is a newly elected member of the Near East Area Commission who sets the season off with an energizing conversation on what’s necessary for Black spaces to thrive.

This season is focused on Black voters, the spaces they congregate in, and how those spaces are impacted by policy. When electoral candidates campaign for Black votes, many segments of the community are left out of the conversation. Season 3 explores the Black community’s other gathering spaces—from the barbershop, salon, local bar, and more.

S2 Finale: State Rep. Erica Crawley

S2 Finale: State Rep. Erica Crawley

In our final episode of the season, we interviewed the incredibly inspiring State Representative Erica Crawley. Representative Crawley is currently serving Ohio House District 26 and is actively seeking the appointment to the Franklin County Board of Commissioners. This appointment will be announced next week on June 24th, 2021 at 6pm ET. Representative Crawley would become the first Black woman ever to serve in such a position in Franklin County and she has our full support for this critically important position. We encourage you to learn more about her in this episode.

While serving in the minority in a Republican-controlled legislature, Rep Crawley has been successful in getting several pieces of bipartisan legislation signed into law by the Governor. She is the highest-ranking Democrat member on the House finance committee, currently negotiating a state operating biennium budget of more than $74 billion. She recently brought over $2.3 million back to the 26th District and several million to Franklin County more broadly. These resources were for programs such as Franklin County’s Step Up To Quality (childcare) and partnerships with organizations that work on issues surrounding affordable housing, serving the unhoused and differently-abled, after school programs, and maternal and infant health, to name a few.

S2E8: Morgan Harper

S2E8: Morgan Harper

This week we welcome back friend of the show, and former grassroots congressional candidate, Morgan Harper. Morgan has been a fierce advocate for addressing police violence in Columbus and has used her social media platform to draw national attention to the police murders of Casey Goodson Jr., Andre Hill and Ma'Khia Bryant. Reimagining public safety was a focus of her 2020 congressional platform in which she offered the following reforms and community-based solutions:

Empower Citizens and Communities

  • Federally-fund community-based violence interrupters, community members called before the police, particularly in cases of mental health episodes
  • Mandate civilian review boards to oversee incidents of police violence
  • Federally-fund community mental health centers

End Violent Policing

  • Eliminate Qualified Immunity by clarifying the true intent of Section 1983 and protecting 4th Amendment rights
  • Mandate standardized nationwide police training around deescalation
  • End the 1033 Program that provides military weapons and machinery to local police departments
  • Require departments to dismiss officers who kill unarmed civilians

Increase Transparency and Accountability

  • Require independent investigations and prosecutions of all police killings
  • Report all incidents of excessive police force to a federal database
