I seriously thought I was being punk'd when Julie Dixon Jackson reached out to ask me to do a cross-over episode with her! THE host of Cut-off Genes, one of my favorite podcasts! Go listen wherever you get your podcasts!

Also, check out her private group on FB (you'll need to prove your human to join)

TW: We do talk about thoughts of suicide briefly in this episode.

This is also the final episode of 2023 and I can't believe it!

Please listen and give me your thoughts on my ideas for the 2024 season!

Adoptees at Work exists to explore how we identify with our jobs, careers, job-titles and external accomplishments. As Adoptees we have a unique set of experiences (not all the same) that can show up in our identities in ways that seem mundane and extraordinary. Our search for identity often includes a search for a career that feels like a purpose. Sometimes it’s a connection to a career that helps others (and ourselves) heal. It can also include a pursuit of security and autonomy.

I know you’ll take something new away from each episode and learn more about your work style as you listen. If you work with an adoptee or are sharing your life with one, odds are you’ll find a new way of understanding them through these conversations.

With nearly 20 years of recruiting experience in various businesses and economies I pursued certification as a career coach through PARWCC so that I could spend more time helping people understand what goes on “behind the scenes” when they’re looking for a job. I’m passionate about connecting throughlines that most people don’t see and helping humans find work that contributes to their bottom line without forcing them to give up on their heart line.

Several months into this experiment my new friends Greg Gentry and Wendy Kathleen Janet wore me down and convinced me that my listeners may want to know more about ME.

Hmm.

It seemed like a dare and I had to say yes.

Here's an episode where the questions are posed by Greg and answered by yours truly.

I hope you enjoy.

S 1. Ep. 21. Rebecca Berg, No Strings Nutrition

Rebecca came into my orbit on Instagram (you can find her as @no.strings.nutrition) and I was thrilled by her honesty about what it means to be healthy and her knowledgeable posts about how being an adopted person can play into our health!

Then Eve Sturges (of Everything's Relative with Eve Sturges) sent me an introduction to Rebecca and I knew we had to talk.

We had a fun conversation covering some deep topics about body image and the innate challenges that many may not even relate to adoption.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts.

S1. Ep. 20. Akara Skye - A career and Life of courage and Leaps

Akara was so surprised when I shared how clearly I saw her as a courageous being! Not many of us will up and move (big moves!) the way she has.

We also talked about her volunteer work with Adoption Knowledge Affiliates (AKA)- she was very humble about her accomplishments and ability to help them meet their mission!

Additionally - we discuss the AKA conference - which at the time of our talk was upcoming, and at the time of this airing has passed. Although I highly recommend you check out the organization and register for future events!

Chang-hwan Boden: Global Leader in DEI

Chang-hwan and I met through LinkedIn! They are a leader in DEI at Harvard Business Publishing. They work with leaders affiliated with Harvard Business School.

NOTE: I mentioned that I found them via Facebook, but it was LinkedIn.

We talk about seeking stability in work (and life) and continuing to grow.

I'll let them tell you more here:

Chang-hwan Boden (They/Them/Theirs)

Adoptee Liberation and Empowerment || Authentic Leadership || Storytelling || Owning Your Narrative || DEIB Strategy

Chang-hwan is a transnational and transracial Korean adoptee who proudly reclaimed their birth name through court order in 2023. In dual roles of Associate Director for NAAAP Boston's Adoptee Committee and Pride Committee, Chang-hwan is dedicated to creating spaces of inclusivity and empowerment for Asian adoptees and the LGBTQ+ community. Also serving as Global Lead of Culture and Business Transformation at Harvard Business Publishing, they champion corporate social responsibility and advocate for the moral imperative of organizations to better support marginalized groups and local communities.

Beyond their professional life, Chang-hwan's journey has been shaped by a lifelong involvement in punk and heavy music genres. Having performed nationally for over a decade, Chang-hwan is a musician who currently plays guitar in No Model, an all-Asian and adoptee-led hardcore punk band. Through music, the band fearlessly leans in to challenging conversations about the adoptee experience.

Adoptees at Work : Linda Campbell Pevac aka Emma Stevens

Linda shares her thoughts on finding yourself - and finding and following your own patterns.

Linda Campbell Pevac, aka Emma Stevens is a U.S. domestic adoptee from birth and has survived layers of trauma that have put her on multiple journeys. She developed the inner strength and courage to surmount the many struggles she faced. Her traumas were born from first being relinquished and then becoming an adoptee who struggled with being forced to wear an impossible mask of playing the part of the “good adopted child.”

Because of these past traumas, it’s her desire to be part of the movement that is dedicated to help bring forth change to the way our world views the needs and support of adopted individuals, as well as bring awareness of the exploitation that can occur by the hands of counselors, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.

Linda has an undergraduate degree in journalism and has completed Master’s level course work in psychology, specializing in Marriage, Family, and Child counseling. She has two adult children and two cat children who she adores.

You can follow her on instagram at @lindacampbellpevac or @emmastevenswriter a well as other social media outlets.

Adoptees At Work with Cindy Olson McQuay

Adoptees At Work with Cindy Olson McQuay

Cindy and I have a lot in common - not just being adoptees! Her ability to adapt and shine in varying careers and roles throughout her working life felt so familiar to me. She credits the security she felt at home in her adopted family to providing her with the security to define success on her own terms at work.

Cindy is a co-founder of Hiraeth Hope and Healing and is committed to providing one-of-a-kind healing and profound and fun retreats to adoptees, Late Discovery Adoptees (LDAs), MPE/NPEs (Misattributed Parent experience/Not Parent Expected), and Donor Conceived Persons (DCPs).

I'm Peggie Arvidson, a domestic same race adoptee placed through Catholic Charities in Newark, NJ. While I always knew I was adopted I started searching for my bio mother in my teens and finally found the family in my 50s! Professionally, I have had a number of roles but my favorite has been as a corporate recruiter and a career consultant. I'm passionate about helping people identify what makes them happy at work and I've had a hunch that our earliest lives influence that happiness.

Adoptees at Work: Robin Davis

Adoptees at Work: Robin Davis

Robin's story of being a Baby Scoop era adoptee and a young, single mom will move you deeper into understanding the ways we find our careers and continue to grow with them as we grow ourselves.

One of the things I began to ponder from this conversation is "do we adoptees pick 'problem' clients out of a desire to always make things right for other people?"

Your host (me) is Peggie Arvidson. I'm a domestic, same race adoptee who was placed through Catholic Charities in Newark NJ. I'm also a professional recruiter and career consultant on a mission to help people be happy at work, and that often requires digging under the surface to find out what happiness actually means!

At the end of the episode we talked about https://hiraethhopeandhealing.com and I hope you'll check them out.
