114. What are you grateful for?

114. What are you grateful for?

Things move extraordinarily fast this time of year and I'm offering today's episode as a soft reminder to take a gratitude pause.

A pause to appreciate how far you've come this year and for the simple things in life, which in my opinion, are the grandest.

Research shows that practicing gratitude, not just saying it, but expressing it can change your brain.

By expressing gratitude, your brain releases serotonin and dopamine which are responsible for your feel good emotions and enhance your mood almost immediately. Research shows that the simple act of writing things down can improve optimism and self esteem.

So for this month's episode, I've compiled a series of quotes from podcast guests, family, and friends who share what they're grateful for.

When they asked me what they should say I asked them to just share what's on their hearts.

In the beginning of November, I had the incredible opportunity to be a part of Julie Ryan's Angelic Attendant Training. Julie was my podcast guest last month (episode link here) and I've been listening to her podcast Ask Julie Ryan for some time. I was led to her work and wanted to learn more.

To say that the training was the best decision I've ever made is an understatement. I learned so much and was so energized that I didn't sleep for the entire weekend that I was there. We were the first in-person class and it was so successful that Julie will continue to offer the training in person.

I met so many incredible people and featured a handful in today's show, including Julie.

Typically, I round up the show with the "Top 3" takeaways. With today's episode, I challenge you to think of three things that you're grateful for and I bet you can come up with more than three.

And repeat this exercise every night before falling asleep. Try it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that.

Now that's really something.

Listen in to this episode and lean in to the feeling of gratitude.

109. How to Eliminate Self-Sabotage for Life Success

Dr. Philip Agrios is a Business Breakthrough Specialist, international speaker, and bestselling author who works with businesspeople worldwide to move from self-sabotage to self-made success. He guides people on how to quickly uncover a trait that we are all born with, which is the Inborn Sabotaging Trait. He discovered it over 30 years ago and has worked with thousands and thousands of people from all walks of life and ages.

Phil's personal journey is the story within all of us. In other words, he allowed his inner saboteur to hold him back professionally and personally. Within his work for a true solution, Phil discovered the precise predictable cycles that occur naturally everywhere he looked: Self-sabotage was an integral part of it and he slowly learned what to do to help himself and now he shares this with us so that we too can break out of our destructive “habit-loops.”

106. Dr. Jennie Byrne on How to Work Smart & Combat Zoom Fatigue

Dr. Jennie Byrne is a trained physician, psychiatrist, and neuroscientist who published "Work Smart: Use Your Brain & Behavior to Master the Future of Work" which is about the workplace and how we can use an understanding of our brains and behavior to make it better now.

Dr. Jennie's research came about during the pandemic as we were trying to figure things out. The technical term for zoom fatigue is video conferencing fatigue and it's a real phenomenon. The research shows that our brain is basically in a high state of alert and that our brain resources are being drained to try to navigate a highly unnatural environment.

In this episode we also talk about the importance of taking care of ourselves so that we don't experience empathy fatigue.

And at the end, we have some fun talking about how emojis turn on our brains the same way facial expressions do.

104. Dave Raymond: Can Fun Save Your Life?

This episode is part two of a two part series with Dave Raymond, who created the loving, fun and playful personality of The Philly Phanatic, the Philadelphia Phillies mascot, the best mascot, ever!

Dave Raymond is an international keynote speaker who has dedicated his life to studying methods that lead to long-term sustainable happiness. His work is focused on The Power of Fun, which is the title of his book and his life. Dave has taught countless others to ask themselves the question: How can fun save your life?

In this episode, Dave reminds us that The Philly Phanatic is a unifier with a vitally important lesson: we are more in common than we’re not; when we surround ourselves with the things that we love, and we share them, we’re going to learn about the people we don’t know about. Dave reminds us that having fun is simple solution to a really complex problem.

Dave leans in to the power and importance of having fun and reminds us that if we practice, and work hard at it, we'll realize that no matter how difficult life can be, we CAN get over it. Keep having fun over and over; we all have resilience.

One of my final questions was asking Dave how he survived the hot summer days in the furry costume. He shares that the years wearing the costume were just an elixir for a healthy life overall, both physically and mentally.

To continue the conversation with Dave, visit his website Dave Raymond speaks.com and while you're there, be sure to sign up for The Power of Fun Newsletter which visits your inbox only once per month and in perfect timing to set you up for a fun weekend.

87. Organizing Your Life to Spark Joy

Amanda Jefferson  is one of the world's first KonMari consultants.

She recently landed a spot on the TEDx stage where she challenged us to ruffle some feathers and declare the difference between what we "should" have in our closets as opposed to our must haves.

It's much more than cleaning out your space. It's about recognizing the ways we hold ourselves back starting with the things we have hanging in our closets and moving on from there.

Taking notice that we deserve to be surrounded by, and are worthy of, having everything (and everyone) that sparks joy, down to the socks we put on our feet.

In other words, it's a mindset shift. Shifting from doing something you were told to do to something else because intuitively, you know what lights you up. So, how do you let go? The closet is a great place to start.

83. Calm Your Vagus Nerve for Anxiety

Ellyn Ito is the CEO and Co-Founder of Innerstill.  As a serial entrepreneur, Ellyn is on a mission to help us manage our anxiety by bringing attention to the vagus nerve.

If you've never heard of it, look out because you will now notice it everywhere. The vagus nerve is the longest collection of nerves that run from our brain to our abdomen and is responsible for our mood, digestion, and heart rate to name a few.

When we're in a state of stress, it gets activated and this stress state brings on feelings of anxiety, our muscles tense, and our heart beats faster.

The work that Ellyn and her company are doing helps inspire our bodies to heal from within and I truly feel that this is the right time, right place moments.

68. You are HERE

68. You are HERE

Everyone deserves happiness and I think the hardest part of life is simply believing that we deserve it.

And sometimes it's easier to list things that we're unhappy about rather than list things that make us genuinely happy.

My podcast guest today, Jule Kim and I discuss this very tough question and how it takes time to figure it out.

We have to understand where we are in life before we can move forward.
