Ok my friends, let's talk about being an introvert and still building a successful practice.

When I first started my career as an advisor, I did it ALL. Everything I was "supposed to do."

🙅 going to networking events & trying to get business cards

🙅 blasting messages on Facebook to old friends / colleagues

🙅 cold calling chamber of commerce people

🙅 hitting up my alma matter on LinkedIn

🙅 telling myself “okay, you gotta ask for referrals in every meeting this week!”

… etc. etc. You name it, I did it.

And, I saw results. I mean, you throw enough spaghetti at the wall, something usually sticks.

But, I was miserable. Like, really, really burnt out.

Maybe you're here with me (burnt TF out) or maybe you're just kinda tired of the rat race of go go go every damn day.

And I learned -- for me -- that I was so burnt out because I was doing so many activities that were sapping my energy every day.

Understanding myself deeper, I started to better understand my own energy levels, what depletes me & what fills me with energy -- and THIS my friends is the key to building a successful practice.

So, here are some high level recommendations based on your energy:

If you're an extrovert, these prospecting strategies will work

  • Going to networking events
  • Asking for referrals in every meeting
  • Cold calling
  • Social prospecting / social observation
  • Partnerships with CPAs
  • Keeping 20-30 meetings each week

If you're an introvert, OR someone who wants to simply work less OR you just have less energy than other people, these are the strategies that work:

  • Using technology to get referrals instead of sheer willpower of “ask in every meeting”
  • Creating automations to get leads on repeat
  • Having 1 day off per week to recharge
  • Not feeling like you’re BOTHERING people when asking for referrals but instead getting people to refer you INBOUND leads
  • Creating an Automated Linkedin Campaign
  • Email Marketing
  • Nesting at Companies
  • DPM (dedicated prospecting meetings)

As y'all likely know, I really enjoy working.

BUT

I also really, really enjoy NOT working.

I love setting up systems to make my business run without me.

And lately, I've been really falling back in love with myself, my life, building up hobbies (post breakup life I'm being really intentional about loving myself & doing things that fill my cup).

And during the week when I would "normally" be working, I've been reading by the pool, working out, taking my doggie Cashew for a walk, having a green juice at a coffee shop, spending time with my bestie Ashley...

But....

Here's what I've noticed (and I'm curious if this will ring true for you, too)

When I'm unclear or "foggy" around HOW to bring in consistent revenue into my business... the hobbies, the time off, the spontaneous walks in the middle of the day -- they feel like GUILT, not like FREEDOM.

Over the past 7+ years, I've noticed something SHOCKING. Lack of clarity creates anxiety.

Fortunately, the opposite is also true. More clarity = less anxiety (and more money, more consistency, and more FREEDOM).

As advisors / business owners, I think that a lot of us crave freedom. But, when you don't know the "how" on creating recurring, consistent income -- the freedom feels fleeting, or stressful, or guilty.

(have you ever taken a vacation / maternity leave / a long weekend -- and kept thinking over and over and over about work?)

A few weeks ago, I was feeling really stressed about money (yes, even I sometimes feel anxious around money)!

And here's what I've observed in myself (as well as the advisors I coach) --

95% of the time, when I'm stressed about money, it's because I'm looking at the OUTCOME (# of closes on the calendar, our open inventory, submitting premium, people saying yes...) and NOT focusing on the ACTIVITIES (dialing, getting referrals, showing up daily to do your "revenue generating activities").

And THAT is why this topic is so important.

So -- let's talk about how I structure my day (p.s. these are not recommendations, I'm sharing so you can see what feels right and adopt if you'd like!)

  •  First thing I try NOT to check my phone (it's hard some days). I don't want my brain to start by relying on social media for dopamine.
  •  I walk Cashew for about 30-45 minutes and listen to a YouTube (usually Abraham Hicks, Oprah, or Andrew Huberman)
  •  I then sit and work on my HIGHEST value activities. My curent daily activities are:

Other things I do that keep my brain in OPTIMAL performance include:

  •  I don't consume any social media content until I've created mine (creation > consumtpion)
  •  I put my phone on do not disturb so I'm not distracted during my daily activities
  •  I don't check emails until later in the day
  •  I have SYSTEMS for getting leads & referrals (more on that below) -- so I am not "stressed" about leads or new meetings
  • MOST IMPORTANTLY -- I focus on all the above BEFORE answering client questions / reading emails / checking texts. This keeps me OUT of "reactive" mode, and keeps me in creation / focus mode.

Welcome back to another episode my friends!

This episode is one of my most vulnerable, because I'm sharing my story -- and holding back nothing.

A lot of times social media just shows you the highlight reel. But the struggles we go through are universal (EVERYONE has their moments) -- and those struggles are what often help build the most character, resiliance, and desire for change.

I also wanted to record this episode because I'm a very optimistic person, and sometimes my optimisim creates "selective amnesia" for myself LOL. Meaning, I go through tough times then basically just "move on" because hyper-fixating on my struggles doesn't allow for more growth.

And so we may have picked up, from a young age, that sacrifice is required for success.

This episode is one of those episodes that I feel like we ALL desperately NEED, but don’t always WANT.

It’s like the broccoli sitting at the table when the pizza is right next to it - we know it’s GOOD for us, but the pizza sounds ohhhh so much better LOL

The thing is, though, this episode is going to be so incredibly impactful when you understand this one thing.

Needy or Desperate energy is Universal Dream Repellent. 🙅 

When you feel needy or desperate, you emit the energetic vibration that is equal to the most powerful bug spray to keep your desires away.

The cool thing is, you already knew this, didn’t you?

You maybe wouldn’t have described it as “Bug Spray for your Desires” (🦟💨 lol) but you KNOW that needy energy pushes things away. 

Think of a time in your life when someone was being suuuuuuper needy with you. You just went on a first date. You enjoyed it! 

But they texted you over, and over, and over.

They kept saying things like “do you like me?!”

👎 You can feel it, can’t you? The repellant energy?

The same goes for sales.

Have you ever heard of “commission breath?”

It’s the idea that when you’re selling, you’re more motivated by getting PAID than by helping the person you’re working with.

💭 And here’s a quick story

A few years ago, I was engaging in a fairly large purchase, and the salesperson helping me was super nice at first!

When it got closer to me actually buying, and after they had spent a good amount of time working with me…

I started to get really needy energy from them.

❌ They weren’t willing to negotiate on my behalf.

❌ They texted me over and over to have me sign documents.

❌ They had swings in their emotions – up and down

And it was CLEAR that they had commission breath.

Now, I’m in sales. I GET IT. 

I am ALL about paying people when they help me.

But when someone has that needy, desperate energy….

It just makes me NOT want to work with them.

It has nothing to do with the value they provide.

Nothing to do with how hard they work for me.

✨ It’s all about the ENERGY ✨

When you understand this (which, you know on a deep level) – you can then begin to shift away from needy energy and into more abundant energy.

And the most amazing thing is that when you shift to more relaxed, calm, expectant and abundant energy…

YOUR SALES WILL GO UP 💸🤯

People LOVE working with other people who are confident and have an attitude of “I’m here to help, but I don’t NEED you”

A belief system is simply a pattern of thinking that, at some point in time, was valuable.

Unconscious mind only adopt beliefs that it believes are valuable (meaning, you’re not going to have a belief system that ONLY hurts you).

However, a lot of times, old belief systems (like, “I have to work hard to be successful” or “if I get to be successful, I’ll lose all my freedom”) keep us stuck in the same pattern of living – and in the same results.

And this is where frustration builds.

We DESIRE change.

But our unconscious mind isn’t on board (yet).

In Part 2 of the Belief Shifting series, we’re tackling the belief system…. I feel bad saying no to people.

For example, let’s say you’re a Financial Advisor and want to start working with people who have more money.

You try setting client minimums….

And then you meet someone who doesn’t meet your criteria, but you still take them on.

You say to yourself: “Ugh, but I really want to help them!”

And now you’re stuck – 

Do you hold your boundary and forsake this person who you CAN help?

Or do you take them on as a client and feel frustrated by your lack of progress?

I go deep into this belief system – and how to shift it – in this episode!

“It’s all mindset”

You hear that a LOT I’m sure, and while maybe you know it’s true on some level….

You might feel like you DO have a pretty good mindset. You’re positive, upbeat, optimistic.

You desire success.

You feel like you deserve success.

Yet….

Somewhere you’re stuck.

And, knowing that you CAN achieve success but haven’t yet is the most frustrating part.

So, what gives?

Unconscious mind does. Literally (lol).

Here are some things to understand foundationally:

  1. Unconscious mind isn’t logical

  2. Unconscious mind picks up beliefs (or patterns) from life experience that it continues to play out… unconsciously (lol)

  3. You can’t “think” your way into changing your unconscious

  4. Unconscious only does things it believes have some value (it’s not “out to get you”)

  5. Unconscious would rather you be miserable and in a “known” spot, than go into the unknown and potentially be happy

  6. In fact, unconscious isn’t concerned with your happiness at all. It’s only job is survival… and procreation.

Because of all of this, unconscious mind can create a lot of blocks for us on our road to success.

And that’s what sparked this series of podcast episodes where, together, we’ll work through some of the most common belief systems I see – and exactly how to shift them.

So instead of saying “It’s all mindset”, let’s say…

“It’s all unconscious programming you picked up when you were younger that, while it served a purpose at some point in time, it’s holding you back from your next level of success – and therefore we want to shift out of it”

(I think I need to work on my catch-phrase lol)

We are back back back again with another episode of the Scottie Taylor Jr - Success + Money + Mindset Podcast!! 

Today’s episode is ALL about hard work.

But I’m NOT going to talk about “hard work” in the way you might think.

In fact, I’m not going to encourage you to work less or not try so hard.

Instead, I’m going to share with you THREE things you MUST have in place before you use “hard work” to accomplish all of your goals.

The reason I created this episode?

I know what it’s like to be a new entrepreneur.

And I know what it’s like to grow up in a world where “hard work” is seen as the HOLY GRAIL.

In a world where the harder you work, the more successful you’re seen (and feel).

But, unfortunately, hard work ALONE isn’t the solution to a massively successful business.

But you probably already knew that already, right?

See, if hard work ALONE got people massive success, then the teachers and servers of the world would be making millions.

But that’s just not the case.

I’ve said this before and I continue to stand by it: hard work alone can get you going in business and help you hit the $100k - $150k mark  – But getting to $300k+?

Hard work ALONE won’t cut it.

Think about where you are right now in your business. 

How much money are you making, and how hard are you working? Like how many hours a day?

Let’s say you’re making $100k a year right now, and working 10-12 hours a day, 5 days a week….

If you’re here, you probably know there’s a breaking point 

If you want to DOUBLE to $200k….

You can’t work TWICE as hard, right? (and you very likely don’t WANT to).

But….

And this is a big butt…

You WANT to keep working hard (at least most entrepreneurs do).

The reason?

When you’re an entrepreneur, there are a LOT of things outside of your control.

  • You can’t control if someone picks up the phone when you call

  • You can’t control who sees your content when you post it

  • Heck, you can’t even control someone saying YES! 

Virtually nothing is inside of your control, which can create a lot of stress.

But, there is ONE thing that is absolutely under your control.

How hard you work.

How many hours you put in, how determined you are, how much effort you exert.

And in a world of uncertainty, knowing that YOU can control something - namely, yourself - adds a level of “okay, I got this - I can do this!

Now that we’ve laid the foundation, here’s where my message comes in.

Because hard work is within your control, a lot of entrepreneurs tell me that they are WILLING to work hard… to get to that next level.

But, if hard work ALONE can’t get you there, then what’s the missing ingredient?

Ep 72 - If you’re not getting inbound leads, your business is broken. Here’s why (& how to fix it!)

If you’re a Financial Advisor and want to build a sustainable, fun, and profitable AF business, you need to be getting inbound leads. 

Period.

Why?

Well, aside from the obvious “It would make my life easier” answer…

😰 The real answer is that because 90% of the “hustling” you’re doing is around prospecting / getting more leads. 

🔥 And if you can learn how to get inbound leads, your entire business will transform.

And here’s where this revelation came from.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been meditating on and thinking about my prospecting system.

I’ve been an advisor for the past 6 years. 

In my first 2 years, I was HUSTLING. I had no strategy, no systems – I just had a strong AF desire to make this career work, and a goal of $250k of revenue.

After hitting that goal in my second year and being burnt TF out, I knew there had to be a different way to continue growing.

I hit $250k, but I wanted to make $500k. And I definitely could NOT work 2x as hard (I was already working 6-7 days a week).

When it comes to being an advisor, I think about business in two segments: 

  1. Lead generation (dials, referrals, cold calling, etc. etc.)  and
  2. The client flow (meeting clients & taking them to action).

The client flow, I’ve learned, is the easiest part of the business to automate and streamline. You can hire people, delegate tasks, and make that part of the business streamlined AF.

The front end, though, is where I (and a lot of advisors) got tripped up.

When I looked back to 2018 and 2019…I realized something shocking.

90% of the reason I was “hustling” so hard was because I was constantly trying to meet enough people to talk to & schedule FactFinders with. 

The “hustling” looked something like this:

🚫 I spent HOURS on LinkedIn adding & messaging people

🚫 I would cold call and cold email for hours

🚫 I was on Facebook messaging old friends and coworkers and inviting them to a conversation.

🚫 I spent tons of time researching ways to get referred business – either through building feeds lists or emailing clients for introductions

🚫 Because I wasn’t getting tee’d up referrals, I had to email / call / text people multiple times to get them on the calendar.

Then, I had a realization. 

If I could figure out how to create a SYSTEM for my prospecting and generate INBOUND leads….

90% of the work I was doing would disappear 🥵🥵🥵

And that felt juicy AF.

And now? When I get an inbound lead, the client typically emails me, my assistant responds with a link to my calendar, and boom. Booked.

The fking easiest sh*t ever.

  • Build up $1m into my investment account. My goal is to save $30k/mo // 

    • 80k revenue // 25k taxes // spend 25k // save 30k

What does going all in on my business look like?

6-12mo Goals as of July 30, 2023

By January 2024, 16 advisors per month -- $80k/mo into FAA at $5k average price per person

7 PIF August / Sept

To get there, I will:

1) Sign up for a coach / VIP day / Mastermind

2) Perfect my lead gen system, funnels, email sequences, LinkedIn, cold email, and social media content creation

3) Have these systems lead advisors to live webinars, recorded webinars, "explore FAA" page, and ultimately lead to FAA (singular focus). Start closing in DM's / through emails / on live webinars (eventually step away from sales calls -- but also okay to still answer questions directly)

4) Based on FB Ads / Content Creation / Emails >> Get 16 advisors to sign up in one month - hit my first $80k month!! By January 2024.

5) Hit 16(+) advisors per month ($80k+/mo) consistently for 3 months (consistency of revenue, work through any kinks that come up, build my raving fan base, gather more testimonials, etc.)

6) Once the audience is built & revenue is consistent, expand into more ways to capture revenue. Additional programs, masterminds, VIP days, etc. -- Essentially, become a full fledged online entrepreneur.

Timeline:

  • August 2023: Hire coach

  • October 2023: Start selling in the DMs / transition away from sales calls

  • December 2023: 16 advisors in ONE MONTH into FAA!

  • January - March 2024: Maintain 16 advisors / month

  • April 2024: Expand into more ways to make money with my audience!

This level of detail is UNHEARD of to provide in a podcast, but I felt inspired to just share it ALL with you this time!

So there’s this saying that one of my spiritual teachers (Abraham Hicks) says that I freaking LOVE.

And I was having a conversation with a client of mine, and the topic came up and I just felt super compelled to share it with all of you today.

The Vibe: Plug in the (fking) vacuum before you vacuum the rug!

I’ll explain.

When you are feeling insecure, lacking confidence, or feeling like something won’t work…

And you take ACTION from this place of insecurity….

Nothing happens.

It’s like trying to vacuum the rug, but not plugging in the vacuum first.

It’s a whooooole lot of effort, but virtually no results.

I get it though, this is very different from what a LOT of people will tell you.

We learn from a young age to work harder, put in more effort, more energy, and just keep going. 😖

Virtually no one talks about getting your energy right FIRST before taking action.

If you’re skeptical, that’s ok!

But I’d encourage you to look around. How many people do you know that work so. damn. hard… but have very little to show for it?

How many people out there do you see sweating, efforting, trying – but they don’t have the money, the success, or the freedom they truly desire?

If hard work were the ONLY path to success, then the people working the hardest (teachers, servers, etc.) would be millionaires. But that’s just not the case.

The hack that wealthy & successful people know is that your ENERGY is always more important than your action. 👏

Not everyone would necessarily say it like that, but if you were to ask a millionaire – before you made your money, did you believe you would become a millionaire

I’d BET that they would say “YES” 💸

So here’s my reminder for you today.

✨ Energy > Action. Always. ✨

Before you pick up the phone, make the calls, send the emails, meet with the clients…

First get yourself revved up. Convince yourself that good shit is happening FOR you.

And when you believe it? Good shit WILL happen for you.

Today, I was thinking to myself… What actually holds people back from doubling their revenue and building the financial planning practice of their dreams?

And after meditating and journaling about it for a while, I realized that there are two main things I’ve seen.

Now, there are many things that might be holding you back, but based on coaching over 80+ advisors over the past 3 years and being one myself for the last 6+ years, there are two things that I’ve seen consistently that create a LOT of “stuckness.”

The “stuckness” usually sounds a little like this:

👉 You’re 3-7 years into your business.

👉 You know you have the ability and capacity to do big things in this career. 

👉 You’re smart, have studied up on planning. Maybe you’ve even gotten some certifications (CFP, CLU, RICP, etc.).

👉 But, you’re not at your potential (yet). 😖

👉 Your income has gone up each year, but only gradually.

👉 You’re good at building relationships, closing clients, and overall you enjoy the career…. But you just haven’t really broken through to that next level.

You realize that there’s one area of your business that’s likely holding you back, but you’re just not sure how to fix it.

And you probably already know what that one thing is.

Prospecting. Aka: generating leads.💸

And so, after years of experience, here are the two things I see that hold back advisors from their next level:

1️⃣ Meeting with anyone / taking joint work down meetings

and…

2️⃣ Keep getting referred laterally, not up (no strategy for prospecting up)

If you’re over 1+ year in the business, you likely already know this: 

If you want to make more money without working more hours – the fastest and most effective way to do this is to prospect UP (aka: meet people who have more money).

I know, it’s easy to write here, but harder to do in action.

Here’s what I see SO many advisors get stuck (and there is where things become a catch 22):

👉 You say “yes” to joint work down meetings – I mean, why not?! It’s a meeting scheduled on your calendar without having to do any work!

👉 Because you take these joint work down meetings, you don’t feel the pressure to prospect as much.

👉 Because you don’t feel any pressure, you haven’t researched / created a strategy for prospecting up.

👉 And if you don’t have a proven strategy for prospecting, you don’t have your own leads coming in.

👉 BUT, you still need people to talk to, right? So then you keep accepting joint work down meetings.

And on and on the cycle goes.😵‍💫

Suddenly you realize – you’re doing 100% of the work, getting 50% of the case, AND you don’t have a prospecting system to get out of this situation.

Ciao from Sorrento, Italy! I am super excited to share the newest episode of the Scottie Taylor Jr Podcast – Hitting Your “Next Level” Won’t Eliminate Your Anxiety. But This Will

As I write this, I’m overlooking the Almalfi coast - which is freaking BEAUTIFUL!! I am feeling alllll sorts of gratitude, but of course, there is still a small part of me that feels anxious about life & business.

And so, as I was brainstorming content for this episode, something came through for me – and I’m REALLY excited to share this episode and thoughts with you.

If you’re anything like me, you likely want to make more money.

And when we think about making more money – we want it for one reason only. We think that when we have it, we’ll feel better. 

Making more money, for most, comes down to one of three things: security, freedom, and fun. 

And for the longest time, I used to think that once I had a certain amount of money, things would just be easy. Like, my anxiety would go away, I’d be able to live in the moment, and I wouldn’t be stressed out at all anymore.

Well, hate to say it, making more money did NOT eliminate my anxiety, but it did change it. 

So – back to my point. 

This morning, Joe and I took a trip to Positano, about a 40 minute drive from where we are in Sorrento. We spent the morning walking around, exploring, and just soaking it all in.

And I had a brief thought…. “If I had $10m in the bank right now, man oh man I wouldn’t be stressed at all! I could totally just enjoy the moment and not worry about finances”

I’m guessing some of you have thought something similar, or am I alone here?!

And that thought sparked another thought, which went something like this:

How can I create a life where I’m not stressed or anxious about money or my business????

Through experience, I’ve realized that there’s no magical financial number that - once you hit it - you’ll feel “secure.”

There are millionaires that still feel stressed and anxious about money. 

If making it to a certain level doesn’t allow for stress to disappear, then how the f*ck do we finally eliminate stress & anxiety around our business?

After a LOT of trial and error, here is my solution to feeling virtually stress free in business – and finally be able to live in the present moment.

Step 1: Set up a lead generation system, one that’s PROVEN to work

I go DEEP into this in the episode, but here’s the short and sweet of it. If you have a system to bring in new people every single day, then your entire business will continue to work.

The MAIN reason I would stress, hustle, and worry is because I didn’t know if I had enough leads coming in – and therefore enough money coming in.

Once I solved this (and I share how I am going about it in my business currently) – I actually feel like I can relax, enjoy myself, and KNOW that people are going to come in the door every day.

Step 2: Trust & believe in your system, and surrender to the process you created (aka: let TF go of control!!!!!!!!!!!)

This might seem super simple at first, but something I am constantly doing is letting TF go of control!!! 

Years and years of being taught that “hard work = success” has created patterns of behavior in my life – and the biggest one is that I feel like I have to show up in order to make money.

Letting go of this belief system – and trusting in my process - has been such a beautiful challenge for me, but one that is insanely rewarding.

Welcome back to another episode of the STJ Podcast!

In today's episode, I'm going to break down EXACTLY how I grew my coaching revenue from $6k in February to $39k in June (a 550% increase)!

From February to June, my revenue grew by +550% -- which is kind of insane.

Here are my exact revenue numbers month by month:

February: $6,240

March $12,938

April: $20,320

May: $28,108

June: $39,104

Now that the context is there, here's the strategy I used to grow so quickly.

I created a robust -- yet simple to execute -- strategy to get leads.

And this is EXACTLY what I teach inside of my digital coaching program, The Financial Advisor Academy

Here are the strategies I used to get TONS of leads - book sales calls, and ultimately close a LOT of business.

1) I clearly identified my target market, got hyper specific on my ideal avatar, and doubled down on solving ONE problem.

2) I used LinkedIn to bring in new leads.

3) I created a hyper targeted email campaign

4) I started posting on social media (mostly LinkedIn) to brand myself as an expert

5) I reached out directly to offices to offer free speaking events

6) I hired a CRM manager


And when I implemented these strategies? There have been CONSISTENT leads coming in the door.

And now that the "leads" part of the equation has been cracked, I simply worked on improving my sales call process (conversion %).

Next up? I'm working on how to scale my sales call process so I can start selling to more people without having to show up on a Zoom call.
