UUMAN Unitarian Universalist Metro Atlanta North Church

By UUMAN

We are curious and compassionate thinkers and doers. We are diverse in faith, ethnicity, history and spirituality, but aligned in our desire to make a difference for the good. We have a track record of standing on the side of love, justice, and peace. We have radical roots and a history as self-motivated spiritual people: we think for ourselves and recognize that life experience influences our beliefs more than anything.

Affirming Our Worth

Affirming Our Worth

We shouldn't HAVE to affirm our own worth, but given the silos we're forced into as citizen-consumers, sometimes it's something to consider. Our guest preacher, Lylah Lockridge, offers the example of airline perk programs as emblematic of the perceived social class we're assigned. Or, as she puts it, "Those who are unable or unwilling to pay a higher price receive no perks....If you are the last to board, you are received like the closing credits in a sad movie."

(Also, a "little secret." Belief in our inherent worth and dignity IS heaven.)

There's also the latest announcements and good news from Stewardship.

Dismantling Racism Requires Overcoming Capitalism

Dismantling Racism Requires Overcoming Capitalism

Our guest minister, the Reverend Jonathan Rogers, guides us through our process of formally committing ourselves to "dismantle racism in our selves and in our institutions." His sermon traces racism's history on our continent, and how we have historically enshrined it in our governing documents and practices, can give us some clues about its origins and causes.

But before that, you'll hear from a newly-minted member (albeit long-ish-time attendee and volunteer!) on the importance of pledging; plus our readings authored by Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt and Andrea Hawkins-Kamper.

Call the Midwives

Call the Midwives

"What does the midwife tell us to do?"

"Breathe! And then? Push!"

A tortured vocation over the centuries, fought for by women who deserve what we might call secular canonization, midwives have been around since the start of human history.

Listen and learn of its saints from the past, and how today, midwifery is there to help all of us, regardless of gender, to be kind, brave, just, merciful, and hopeful.

But first, a message from a longtime member about how beer and pizza play into one's commitment to striving for justice.

Spirituality, Health, and Healing

Spirituality, Health, and Healing

This week's episode features UUMAN's own Rev. Kim Palmer, asks us to consider how religion and spirituality are connected to health. Serious illness can be a shock to us in every way: physically, mentally, and spiritually.

How does our spirituality help us cope? How can we bring our values and beliefs to bear in the service of healing?

You'll also hear our wacky Stewardship team's sketch comedy stylings, the usual announcements, and a guided meditation focusing on lemons.

A Few of My Favorite Things

A Few of My Favorite Things

Is it possible to live with fewer material possessions? Our guest speaker, the Reverend Jeff Jones, shares how he accepted a challenge from his father, and seriously explored the topic for a year, with some surprising results. He introduces his story with his connection to UUMAN dating back the mid-1990s, when Jeff was our part-time minister (prior to his own ordination in 1998), as we conducted a search for a full time minister.

Planned Parenthood Southeast's Nalah Lewis, whose organization is UUMAN's 50/50 recipient for the month of February, is also with us to describe their healthcare mission.

Out Of This World

Out Of This World

Do we really belong here, in this world, at this moment? Bizarre as it may seem to UUs, in this service, we're presented with the backdrop of collective religious and philosophical thought on the matter, from the distant past and into the present.

It prompts this question: Who are we to argue with some of the world's most celebrated thinkers on five continents?

Then again, there's another great comeback question, per some ancient Zen snark quoted herein: "Why don't you die, so you can enjoy the rest of your life?

Love at the Center

Love at the Center

How can we place love at the center? Is Article II's proposal the way to accomplish this?

What can we learn from our own denomination's statement of "Rule and Practice" dating back to the year 1790?

Consider, too, that "the mission of the church is not to meet our needs. The mission of the church is to heal our worlds," per Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell, as quoted in this episode's call to worship. That's a tough mission statement to embrace, but it's relevant to our journey toward acceptance, or lack thereof, of Article II.

Sounds of the Season

For this podcast episode, the "Sounds" are mostly spoken rather than sung or performed instrumentally, alas, due to copyright issues with musical compositions and arrangements in a downloadable podcast. As always, the amazing music can be heard in the unedited YouTube video created from our Livestreamed services, at our YouTube channel:

What you will hear are some deservedly happy-clappy announcements--including some clever volunteer coercion!--and an original, musical meditation.

Native American Stories

These native stories shared in service, while engaging and occasionally hilarious, are individually copyright protected, some from decades past. Thus it is doubtful we'd be able to secure copyright protections any time soon, if ever. Thus these tales (one a tale of tails) cannot be included in this podcast although, as always, you can hear and see what went on by visiting our YouTube channel. So what remains for your ears this week, will be announcements and musical accompaniment. Perhaps whetting one's appetite for a longer-form episode to come the following week. (That said, you will be rewarded with just a sniff of the last tail-tale, as we bid one another to go in peace.)

Service of Remembrance

"May we remember the very best of who they were, and what they embodied. And may we embody that essence in our lives."

Due to the intensely personal nature of this service, and to potential privacy and security concerns of a downloadable podcast episode, the specific reading of names of those who've died in the last year has been cut from this particular audio. However, you will hear our tribute to those we've lost, along with a call-and-response from minister to congregation.

As always, you'll hear our typical Sunday service introductions, visitors checking in, Harvest Moon Auction information dramatically delivered by its co-chair, and bits of merriment in anticipation of a Fall Festival just about to unfold after the grown-ups emerge from the sanctuary. The poetry reading, "Making a Fist", is by Naomi Shihab Nye. Original music heard in today's podcast as musical interludes performed and composed by Music Director Alex Pietsch. Copyright 2023. The Breath of Life

The Breath of Life

Descartes said, “I think therefore I am.” Couldn’t he have said, “I breathe therefore I am”? What is the breath? What is its relationship to life? What is its relationship to the natural world? What does it connect us to?

Why might a written language such as Hebrew have only consonants and no vowels? As Reverend Dave describes, many might think that it's because it would be blasphemous to attempt to put the breath of the spirit of God on a page. One might conclude that "the wind within us is not autonomous."

Per usual, you'll also hear important messages, announcements, and musical accompaniment that are part of the Sunday UUMAN service experience. If you listen until near the end, you'll have an opportunity to participate in Tonglen breathing practice as well.

Betsy DeVos's Yacht

Betsy DeVos's Yacht

Who among us does not enjoy ridiculous, sometimes silly mishaps experienced by our political enemies? Anything wrong with having a bit of fun? Only when it keeps us from focusing on what we need to do to neutralize these enemies. With the likes of someone such as DeVos, her school privatization scheme is part of a nationwide effort to finance our public education by what, our guest speaker posits, is a deliberately cruel method.

We need to address the structural financing of American public schools--specifically, through local property taxes--and see it for what it is, an inherently unbalanced, unsustainable, dishonest and discriminatory mechanism.

Freedom, Obedience and Submission

Freedom, Obedience and Submission

Pretty much all of your big, billion-member-type world religions require fealty. Submission. Put your own personal stuff aside and obey something greater than oneself. Yeah, not us UUs, though... right?

Maybe not. Consider: Among the dances we do, of joy, and love, and yes, a dance of death, do we do a "dance of supplication"?
Is such obedience actually the path to true freedom?

Plus fidget-corner narration, superbly curated Announcements from our dedicated Worship Associate, a Zen master's guidance, and occasional auditory punctuation from those for whom the prospect of a fidget corner was insufficiently enticing.

Are We Ready For Pride?

Are We Ready For Pride?

After the announcements and comedy skits (pretty sure Rev. Dave's Top Ten List qualifies for the latter group), comes the serious question. What kind of commitment are we making to ensure the safety of those whose very lives are threatened by the right wing's culture war? How can we adequately support them, as America's individual states pass legislation and impose regulations deliberately intended to harm its own citizens?

Also, information on how to procure an "ugly yellow 'Side With Love' T-shirt. And re-framing what it means to "burst your bubble" with a new communion, intended to help everyone be free to be who they are.

With Worship Associate Sasha Greyenbuhl, and musical accompaniment by John Pruitt.

Reimagining Covenant

Reimagining Covenant

Just what is "Covenant" supposed to be, anyway? Rev. Dave notes that in 2018 UUMAN gathered to determine what shared values we had, and came up with "Love, Connection, Wonder & Awe, Courage, and Justice." And then he asks: "So what do those words mean to you? Do they mean the same to me?" And that's where we have to dig a bit deeper, so we do. Even if it means, for example, poking holes in the efficacy of the long-cherished Golden Rule.

But before the digging, there's a short skit about the Hand... no the Elbow, no the Fist-bump, no, rather, the Wave, of Friendship, which may or may not be a "freak show", that we experience in-person, in service.

The Great Stories

The Great Stories

Join us this week as lay preacher and educator extraordinaire Rollin Mathis introduces us to the first of what will become a Second Hour Adult Enrichment course this year.

Where else can you not only find the holy grail, but hear a musical jingle performed on the spot to promote its search? Also, the usual announcements, readings, and musical accompaniment.

A note about the sound--we apologize for the occasional flashes of static from wireless connections, that aren't caught by our noise filter. While hopefully not too distracting, we recognize the issue and should be able to contain this in future episodes.

Do We Hear the Cries of Lamentation?

Do We Hear the Cries of Lamentation?

"For-profit prisons. Guns. Exploited domestic and migrant workers. Children workers. Our economic system!" And that's just the literal start of a much longer list of lamentable issues brought to the foreground that we have to consider, all crying out for our attention. Do we hear those cries?

People should not have to face crisis alone. May we have the courage to resolve, and use our muscle, to nurture our spirit.

This episode also includes an appearance by Freedom University's Gabriela Solis. This organization is devoted to empowering undocumented youth and fulfilling their human right to education. Also, an appearance by three hundred thirty million gods and goddesses.

Bonus Episode: Our Past President on Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Governance

"You've now seen one, then you do one, and then after a year of being President, you get to teach one." Past President Miriam Patanian answers everything you always wanted to know about how UUMAN is governed but were (maybe!) afraid to ask. She also shares how she came to "find our tribe" here in Georgia, why she felt called to this three year tour of duty, and what it how it was to be "unchurched" as an adult, after some years of being "Christmas and Easter-type Catholics."

And, of course, some thoughts on how her experience with the Our Whole Lives program shapes her vision of the future for what we call "sex education" in the public sphere. Were her kids' experience with GA Public Schools' attempts to educate about sexual health quite as cringeworthy-slash-ignorant as one might imagine? Sorry, no spoilers here, you'll have to listen to find out.

Ingathering Water Communion

Ingathering Water Communion

"Peace, joy, love, tears, strength? It's all in there." After a summer's break, Rev. Dave Dunn and worship associate Mandi Winders lead this service to begin a new year at UUMAN, connecting one another through our annual Water Communion. Along with a wondering time story for all ages, you'll hear from four points on the compass as we recommit to ministry (thanks to our President, and current Program Council Chair), and charge the water vessel. All musical accompaniment by Alex Pietsch. "Waters of Wonder" and "The Ebb and Flow of Dreams" composed by Alex Pietsch, copyright 2023, all rights reserved.

Trickster Makes This World Go Round

Trickster Makes This World Go Round

"Balancing or taming our hungers is necessary to reduce the drain we are having on this earth, and it puts Trickster's energy in its place."

Lay speaker Donna Melcher takes us on a deep dive into the role of the Trickster, who lives among us and has been here for as long as our species has walked the earth. While it's known by many names, its constant throughout history has been to appeal to our collective and individual hunger.

Musical accompaniment, sound effects, vocal trickery, and off-mic mischief by John Pruitt. Worship associate announcements by David Kroeber.

Bonus Episode: The President Speaks Out

Bonus Episode: The President Speaks Out

"People DO find us. I've always believed that if more people knew about UUMAN, our values, our unique brand of no-dogma spirituality, that many more would come and join us." Mike Chambers shares his vision of the Board President's role in accomplishing such worthy goals, reports relatively good news about UU membership trends, and talks about his past work as VP focusing on UUMAN safety and security policies.

He also points us to some artistic endeavors to which we might wish to read, watch, and hear; and the correct pronunciation of the word "succinct."

All while bringing thirty years of experience as a technical writer to provide answers that are the embodiment of succinct.

John Banville's Quirke novels:

Mike's favorite British detective shows
Endeavour: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/shows/endeavour/#
  Dalgliesh: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/dalgliesh/s01
  Midsomer Murders: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118401/

Josh Ritter's "All Some Kind of Dream":

(which, as Mike says, could be "a UU anthem.")

Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind"

(performed as a duet at Mike and Donna's wedding, gets a mention near the end of the episode)

Lastly: Anyone know of a theater group looking for a Roswell, GA stage, with access to a dressing room (aka "the Choir room"), to rent on certain select evenings?

Expanding Liberty

Expanding Liberty

Individual liberty is sometimes criticized as selfish, a failed doctrine, failing to prioritize community. However, the recent Supreme Court decision ending abortion as an individual right, now subject to legislative control, has led many of us to take a fresh look at the value of personal liberty.

As Unitarian Universalists, can we continue to side with love and protect individual liberty? Are these two critical components in conflict with one another?

The Gift of a Flawed Father

The Gift of a Flawed Father

Merri Beth Stevens intertwines personal stories with just enough science and technology to allow us to grasp "the immense flexibility of the father's brain." Listen and learn to better understand what fathers, and father figures, do to us fellow humans (and in MB's case, how they compel us to take risks.)
Along with a road trip with a Stuckey's pecan log roll reward, instructions on how to play "Quaker", and what a father's faults and failures mean to us now.
Plus the greetings, readings, and skilled worship coordination from Greg Waggoner who had to work without a net (aka a printed "Order of Worship") this week.

Soundtracking A Life

Soundtracking A Life

Our memories are integrated with sensations of the experience: sights, smells, tastes, touch... and sounds. Our lay leader David Kroebel focuses this service on how the music we listen to creates a distinct time capsule for what is going on in one's life at the moment. In David's case, with the help of "mail-order music clubs (remember those?"), then cassette copying, and then ripping and duplicating, into the digital streaming world and intensely curated Spotify playlists. Each time, though, creating an individual time capsule appropriate for every existential crisis that might arise, every critical life event. Recalling and recollecting those memories.
Also: Guided meditation, speculation on what an hour of the Hand of Friendship might be like, and other stray ritualistic spoken bits that keep the ol' Service And More Album soundtrack a-rollin' along. Original musical piano accompaniment by Alex Pietsch. Copyright 2023. All rights reserved. Intro and outro background music by Tim Moor at Pixabay.
