Episode 30 - Exploring What Are Escaping From In Life and Work As A Manager and Supervisor

Episode 30 - Exploring What Are Escaping From In Life and Work As A Manager and Supervisor

Hi,

Managers and Supervisors

How's it going?

In this podcast episode, we'll explore lifescaping and what may hold us back from achieving our goals.

A few things Patti shared:

Think about your life right now. Are you creating the life you want, or going through the motions, or living a life for everyone else but what you want?

What are you escaping from in Life and Work?

What's in your life you need to remove or change to create harmony?

Make a list of the things that you want to remove from your life.

List things you want in life to create to achieve harmony and balance.

Think about what you want and the steps you will take to improve your life.

Start slowly removing the things blocking you from achieving your goals and adding the things that will help you change your circumstances to achieve them.

Once you start implementing the action steps, you will feel the shift from being trapped to a sense of peace and freedom to be you.

What are you waiting for?

Episode 29 - Exploring Why to Use Affirmations as a Manager and Supervisor

Episode 29 - Exploring Why to Use Affirmations as a Manager and Supervisor

Hi,

How's it going?

I am Patti Oskvarek from Coaching for Inspiration with Patti, a Work-Life Balance and Leadership coach, Reiki Master, Blogger, and Podcaster.

I help managers and supervisors to become better leaders and live a more purposeful, balanced life outside of work.

Today, I wanted to share about Affirmations.

When I worked as a Manager and Supervisor, there were days I needed encouragement, a boost of confidence, or meaningful inspiration when all around me was in chaos. I would recite affirmations to help me get through the day.

I would write affirmations on yellow sticky notes and put them on my steering wheel, computer, or bathroom mirror. To help get me motivated for the day. When I took a break, I would listen to affirmations as I took a walk.

Affirmations helped me refocus some positive thoughts and get the negative thoughts out of my head to reframe those thoughts into good ones.

Some people think Affirmations are woo-woo. However, I don't see it that way. It can shift your mindset if you want it bad enough. If you are dealing with the daily grind and have constant interruptions or coworkers trying to discredit you, having positive words and thoughts is good to keep you stable, inspired, and focused.

Have there been times when you needed some inspiration, reassurance, or encouragement during your work day?

I use affirmations in my coaching style by giving clients affirmations during coaching sessions to keep them focused on their goals.

While in a coaching session, I may use my Work-Life Balance Affirmation cards that I created during the coaching session and pull a card; the expression on their faces is priceless because the card is what they need to hear to inspire them.

Clients use them, and they recite the affirmation daily and weekly. It reminds them of their wants and keeps them focused on the end goal.

I created the Work-Life Balance affirmation cards to inspire and encourage; read and repeat them throughout the day. Post them around your home, work area, or in your vehicle. They are pocket-sized, which makes them easy to carry around with you.

How to use the Work-Life Balance Affirmation Cards:

Shuffle and randomly select a card, reflect on it, and repeat the affirmation throughout the day. Or choose a card for the day you would like to focus on and have in your life.

Episode 28 - Exploring How to Deal with Words Left Unsaid

Episode 28 - Exploring How to Deal with Words Left Unsaid

In this podcast episode, we will explore dealing with unsaid words.

I am sure we all had a life situation where we wished we told someone how we truly felt.

How many of us have been ghosted sometime in our life?

It may have been a relationship, a job offer, a promotion, a networking acquaintance, a promise, or a business deal.

Did you want to know the reason why?

How do you get over it and move on?

Recite positive affirmations for healing and to eliminate negative thoughts.

Create a gratitude journal. Every day in the journal, write one to three things you are grateful for daily.

Be aware of your emotions and feelings; take time to feel them — work on halting the complaining, constantly talking about it, and overthinking the situation.

Spend time with positive, happy, and motivated people.

Pick your battles. Sometimes, chasing the person may cause more damage to you. If the recipient doesn't want to hear from you, they won't respond. Start focusing on what you want in life; you are worth more.

Hire a life or leadership coach or therapist to help you overcome the hurt and disappointment.

Episode 27 Exploring Holiday Time for a Manager and Supervisor at Work

Episode 27 Exploring Holiday Time for a Manager and Supervisor at Work

Hi, Managers and Supervisors

How's it going?

Holiday Time is coming. Are you prepared as a Manager and Supervisor?

For a manager and supervisor, this can be a stressful time keeping the business running at maximum speed or at all.

Holidays have a lot of personal stress and often affect the work environment. What do I mean? It can be distracting and can lower productivity in the workplace. Some people become less productive at work during the holiday season and lose motivation. Productivity may be lower because managers and staff are on leave from the office, and workflow slows down.

What are some ways to prepare and ease the anxiety for you and your staff?

  1. Do you rotate Holiday leave time with the staff? If someone takes off one Holiday, they work the other Holidays. Then, they take another Holiday the following year but not the one they got the previous year.
  2. Or does the team sit down and determine together what Holidays they get off?
  3. What about you? Do you take time off during the holidays? Do you plan to take time off and not just physically be there but mentally and emotionally as well?

Preparing well in advance with your staff who is taking time off and what holidays you are taking off - gives everyone a sense of commitment and understanding, and everyone can prepare with their family and friends.

Time to reflect: What is your Holiday Leave Time plan for you and your employees?

Today's podcast Affirmation

I am prepared for the Holidays at work!

Question: Do you feel that work and personal life compete with your attention?

Episode 26 - Exploring Active Listening as a Manager and Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

Episode 26 - Exploring Active Listening as a Manager and Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors

How's it going?

As a manager and supervisor, sometimes in our work-life moments, we want to be left alone and don't want to listen to others at work, yet the other person needs to be heard and understood. We may be tired, exhausted, have deadlines, and want to avoid dealing with one more interruption or problem.

In this podcast episode we will explore active listening techniques as a way of helping to improve leadership skills.

As a manager or supervisor, active listening helps build a healthy working relationship with your boss, co-workers, employees, clients, and customers. Becoming deeply aware of and working on the skill of listening may enhance communication with others in the workplace and your personal life.

Active Listening Techniques to Explore:

Be silent when others are speaking

Keep an open mind

Be aware of your body language

Watch the other person's body language

Listen for keywords to understand

Ask short, direct questions to understand

Paraphrase what was said and ask if you understood correctly

Episode 25 Exploring the Feelings of Working in a Toxic Workplace as a Manager and Supervisor

Episode 25 Exploring the Feelings of Working in a Toxic Workplace as a Manager and Supervisor

In this podcast episode, we explore the feelings of working in a toxic workplace as a manager and supervisor.

Are we responsible for other's attitudes and responses toward us and others?

It depends on how we treat people and ourselves. If we are abrupt, condescending, and demanding, we may be responsible for how people respond and react to that behavior towards them.

How do you feel or respond to a boss, co-worker, peers, and others in the workplace or outside of work who are rude, unkind, or harsh in their tone with you?

What are the effects of working in a toxic environment?

Empathy without boundaries doesn't work and can be self-destructive and disruptive to the workplace.

Are our actions contributing to a positive, negative, or neutral outcome in the workplace environment energy?

What are the results of working in a cohesive, collaborative, supportive environment?

Today's podcast Affirmation

I choose to let go of what I can't control!

Episode 24 Exploring Reversing Rude Behavior in Meetings from Chaos to Calm

Episode 24 Exploring Reversing Rude Behavior in Meetings from Chaos to Calm

As Managers or Supervisors, having efficient and effective meetings is crucial to running a successful business. Group meetings that aren't productive waste valuable time and cost the company money.

Have you ever been in a meeting where at least one person or all attendees have nothing positive to say about anything?

What happened to common courtesy, collaboration, and respectfulness towards each other?

How can we change the behavior in meetings?

It takes one person at a time, starting with Managers and Supervisors, to lead by example and reverse this unprofessional behavior.

A set code of conduct and behavior etiquette is essential to successful meetings. Being courteous and respectful allows everyone to speak, be heard, participate, and engage, which is when great results will happen. Be organized and prepared. As Managers and Supervisors, we lead by example; if we are focused and engaged, our employees will be too.

Q&A 1 Bonus: Questions and Answers about Exploring Life and Work with Patti

Q&A 1 Bonus: Questions and Answers about Exploring Life and Work with Patti

In this bonus podcast episode, I wanted to answer these questions a listener asked me.

Why do you ask questions and sometimes not give tips or solutions to the discussed topics?

Why are the podcast episodes 5 -6 minutes?

This podcast is for Managers and Supervisors to self-reflect and explore within themselves on topics I discuss and to come up with solutions they already know the answer to and for self-awareness of themselves as leaders and become better people at work and home.

The podcast episodes are 5 - 6 minutes because the audience I serve works longer hours and only has a few moments to listen.

As a leadership and work-life balance coach, I am committed to helping managers, supervisors, and others become better leaders and live a more purposeful, balanced life outside of work. I do this for the listeners to explore themselves, situations, and topics that happen as a Manager and Supervisor that they may not be able to discuss with others or behaving in that affect their teams and family.

I talk about topics people are scared to discuss but want help with. Years ago, it was acceptable, but it is not now.

I've had listeners comment that when they have listened to some of the topics I discussed, they lived it, and that is why they left the corporate environment and went out on their own.

Thank you for the questions and for letting me clarify the format of these podcast and why coaching helps others open up awareness and discussion of these complex topics.

Episode 23 Exploring The Feelings Of Aloneness As A Manager or Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

Episode 23 Exploring The Feelings Of Aloneness As A Manager or Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

In this podcast episode, we will explore the feeling of aloneness as a Manager and Supervisor.

Have you ever felt that as a leader or business owner, you are isolated and not having anyone to talk to about work situations?

I think we have all been there. Our decisions are sometimes tough and tax our minds, body, and soul. The relationships within the workplace, at times, are brutal.

It reminds me of the TV Show Alone. This show is about ten survival experts put in a remote area at least 10 miles away from each other to fend for themselves with ten survival items, some clothes, and live off the land.

How does this compare to your work life?

Are there days when you want to hit a button and go home and never go back?

Days of being a manager and supervisor can be overwhelming, especially when you have no support or lack of trust in others in the workplace due to betrayal, unrealistic expectations, or harsh criticism.

What actions have you implemented to combat the feeling of aloneness in the workplace?

If you are struggling with the daily grind and feel alone, a leadership, life or business coach like me will help you work through those everyday challenges to continue moving forward to where you want to be.

Episode 22 - Exploring Effects of Bad Attitudes in the Workplace from Chaos to Calm

Episode 22 - Exploring Effects of Bad Attitudes in the Workplace from Chaos to Calm

In this podcast episode will explore the effects of bad attitudes in the workplace.

One day, my husband and I were at Walmart and saw this quote on a T-shirt. I used to be a people person; then people ruined it! ~ unknown.

I held up the T-shirt and told my husband; I am buying this. As a leadership and work-life balance coach, I encourage people not to feel this way.

So why did I want to buy the T-Shirt?

Have you ever felt this way?

Do you believe that other people around you at work can jade your perspective toward others, and you start to feel like the T-shirt quote?

Here are some Self-Reflection Questions About Daily Interactions:

  • Why is everything about who can "one up" each other? How can this change in my leadership style?
  • Why is "knowledge power"? How can I share more?
  • What happened to being genuinely happy for a coworker and recognizing their accomplishments? How and when can I start recognizing others?
  • Why is being so "busy" acceptable and "ignoring" family okay? How can I improve spending time with my family and friends?
  • When will these interactions change within my Leadership?

What kind of leadership legacy do you want to leave behind?

It would be so amazing if this T-shirt is no longer valid in the workplace, and people feel safe at work and are inspired and encouraged to be their best with continual support. So let's make it happen one day at a time!

Episode 18 - Exploring Why Do We Avoid Doing What We Truly Want In Life and Work From Chaos to Calm (Video)

As Managers and Supervisors, we set the tone of the workplace environment. Our actions, thoughts, goals, and interactions towards ourselves and others contribute to our staff, customers, and if we want to come to work. It spills everywhere if we are unhappy at home or work. I know in the past, I felt unappreciated and showed signs of a lack of respect at work. I didn't want to be at work, and the energy around the office changed from exciting to unbearable. We all have moments like that and push through them. Why do we avoid doing what we truly want in life and work? Is it because we are afraid of what others think? What if we all lived as we wanted and did the work we truly love? What would the world look like if this was the case? Would we be happy, peaceful, thoughtful, meaningful, and kind? What if we held our tongues and didn't say all the negative things in our heads and to others? How would that change our relationships at work and home? What would the work environment look like, and would that change the work environment and how? Why do negative thoughts and reactions creep in first instead of happy, positive, loving actions? What triggers us to think negatively and say rude, unkind words to the people around us? Or consider the worse in others at work instead of the good? Why do co-workers, the boss, and staff treat each other unkind instead of encouraging each other? What would the work environment look like if kindness came into the workplace? Would people want to go to work and feel safe? What are happiness at work and home? Is that what we strive for in life, to be happy, but instead, we have chaos, drama, and people mad at us or around us? What happened to peace, calm, and love? What is holding us back from the life we want? Figuring out what is holding you back from enjoying your life is vital. Being brave and confronting it will end your daily life of constant worry, anxiety, and unhappiness. What do we need to remove or change to create harmony? What action steps will you take to change your life for the better? Once you start the action steps, you will feel the shift from being trapped and avoiding to a sense of peace and freedom. Episode 17 - Exploring Whether Perfection Equals Being An Outstanding Manager or Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Episode 17 - Exploring Whether Perfection Equals Being An Outstanding Manager or Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors, How's it going?

In this podcast episode, we will explore whether perfection equals being an outstanding Manager or Supervisor.

In the business setting, we have been conditioned in the business world to be perfect, which is totally the opposite of imperfect. Everything is about image and how to place yourself to get to the top.

But lately, I've heard a lot about perfection, and it is okay to be imperfect, but in the business world, imperfection is something people don't strive for; they strive for the appearance of perfectionism.

We are taught we need to do this and to do that, and everything is based on perception. We've been groomed on how to dress and act, and people capitalize on our mistakes to climb up the corporate ladder. Mistakes are challenging because we need to be perfect. We can't make mistakes and take risks because errors could happen, so how do people learn if they are scared to make mistakes? Some people won't take risks or get out of the norm. After all, they are afraid that if they take risks, their mistakes will be out there, and someone else will gain because they made a mistake.

So how do we change this? How do we let people be imperfect so they can learn and grow from those experiences of failure?

We have all met someone who appears to have it all together and comes across as having a perfect life. They post all this fun and fabulous stuff on Facebook about their life. They have a great career, a huge house, a brand new car, and a loving home life from appearances, then, later on, you find out it was all a show.

What about a leader that appears to be perfect?

Is anyone really perfect? Hell no, we all have quirks, habits, and personalities that may sometimes rub someone the wrong way, and we make mistakes; that is what a human does.

Do you respect someone who looks and acts perfect, or do you question their motives?

Who do you respect more, someone who is a hot mess but holds it all together or a fake perfect person always looking to make a great impression?

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you should scatter all your dirty laundry at work and not do your job correctly quite the opposite. However, when someone comes across as always perfect and doesn't admit to making mistakes, it leaves suspicion and a lack of trust. It is hard to build lasting relationships by not showing your human side. You may be called a fair-weather person and much more.

Good leaders admit they are not perfect and make mistakes while genuinely caring about how their actions affect others. They strive to do an excellent job for the company, their superiors, staff, coworkers, and customers. They admit their mistakes, learn from them, and seek not to repeat them.

What are your thoughts on whether perfection equals an outstanding manager or supervisor?

Episode 16 - Exploring Conquering the What Ifs Syndrome of Hiring as a Manager and Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

Episode 16 - Exploring Conquering the What Ifs Syndrome of Hiring as a Manager and Supervisor from Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors - How's it going?

In this podcast episode, we are going to explore the hiring process. The hiring process may cause anxiety and overwhelm, especially if you are overthinking the What Ifs.

Let's explore this scenario -

It is time to hire – A valuable team member who has taken another position, and it is time to start the hiring process for their job. You think you won't be able to find someone else who could bring as much value to the workplace or be a nightmare of "The What Ifs."

As a Manager and Supervisor, hiring can be challenging and stressful at the same time. As a result, thoughts run through your head of "The What ifs."

What if's – I choose the wrong person for the position. They have interviewed well and know what to say, but they are not coachable or have a toxic attitude towards customers, coworkers, and me when they come in.

Yes, hiring someone may be stressful for you, your team, and the interviewee. Wanting to make the right decision can, at times, overtake you. Relax, pause and take time to clear your mind to reason. You can make the final decision in a few days.

List the pros and cons of the top two candidates. What did they communicate from the interview and resume (CV), and what strengths does the team want and need from the potential candidate to make the team unit more substantial and efficient? What expertise does this candidate bring that can help the team succeed?

Things to consider in the hiring process:

  • Have a least one team member in the interview.
  • How about bringing back the two top candidates for a second interview and having them interact with your team?
  • Have team members review the job duties and discuss with them an average day. Candidates feel at ease with team members and may open up more.
  • After their interaction with the candidate, have the candidate meet with you again informally to ask questions they may have. Putting this into action will tell you a lot the more relaxed they are, and you will get more of a feel of their personality.
  • Later after the top two candidates have come back for the second interview and met with staff, ask the staff what their thoughts are. Remember, they have to work with this person. Their opinions are priceless because they could save a lot of damage to you and the team in the end, and this is where trust and honesty come into play. Do they feel comfortable telling you how they think? Do they feel safe expressing their opinions?
  • Now you have the ultimate decision and are responsible for it. The team will understand and respect your decision if you have communicated well with your team. Your employees must know that you appreciate their feedback and respect their perspectives.
  • Some employees may feel more comfortable giving feedback privately, and sometimes the team may want a group meeting to share their thoughts with you. That is where you know you have a team that cares about the job and the work environment and you as their leader.

It is rare in a workplace to have this hiring practice and employees' honest feedback. As a manager or supervisor, you want to strive for this kind of teamwork and work environment.

Episode 15 - Exploring How To Keep Your Team Engaged as a Manager and Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Episode 15 - Exploring How To Keep Your Team Engaged as a Manager and Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Today I will explore how to keep your team focused and engaged as a Manager and Supervisor.

Employees make decisions and actions daily that can affect workplace morale, customers, the organization, and profits.

How are you and your team engaging in work?

Is there good engagement between you and your employees?

Do you enjoy the workplace atmosphere? Do they?

What is the key to keeping employees focused and engaged in their work?

  • Start with talking to your employees, getting to know them, and showing interest in them. Ask them how they are doing. Let them speak and listen to them. Provide some open dialogue throughout the conversation. Look at them while they are talking. Be present instead of thinking about other things.
  • Spend time learning about your employees. What are their backgrounds, interests, and values?
  • Provide on-the-job training to help them to succeed. Find their learning style, such as visual, hearing, reading a manual or procedures, hands-on learning, etc.
  • Give employees opportunities to grow in personal development. Employees who develop their work skills and a creative mindset will more likely stay and promote within the company.
  • Give employees special projects and assignments outside their regular duties when they have asked for something else. Employees who are satisfied and learning new things are much more engaged and focused at work.
  • Coach employees with encouragement and act on their suggestions if possible.
  • Encourage employees to network within the company.
  • Have employees participate in the hiring process and have the whole team meet potential candidates. Is this candidate someone who will work well with the team? Get their feedback and perspective. They have to work with this person just as much as you do.
  • Provide some recognition to the hard-working employees and the ones who complete their projects within the target timeframes. And show your appreciation for their accomplishments. Say "thank you" and give them praise for their excellent work.
  • Encourage employees to take breaks to help them get refocused and inspired. Stepping away for a few minutes rejuvenates people.
  • Set clear expectations and make sure your employees understand what expectations. Be clear and direct about workplace goals and objectives. Put the expectation in writing and follow up with the employee on their progress. They may struggle and need guidance to find another way to complete the task. Break down tasks into small achievable steps. This way, they will feel safe and start working on things.

Employees stay with leaders who show interest in them. They are more engaged and focused when they feel appreciated, making a difference and giving credit for their contributions. When a manager and supervisor reflect gratitude towards their employees, everyone will want to come to work each day and give their all!

Episode 14 - Exploring Staying Positive In A Unfavorable Work Environment As A Manager and Supervisor From Chaos To Calm

Episode 14 - Exploring Staying Positive In A Unfavorable Work Environment As A Manager and Supervisor From Chaos To Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors. How's it going?

Today I am going to explore staying positive in an unfavorable work environment.

When you are a manager and supervisor, you get harsh treatment and judgment from your superiors and subordinates. The top tells you to do things your employees don't want to do, and you are stuck in the middle and have to enforce it.

How do you stay upbeat when continually being pushed down by others?

I understand how easy it is to get sucked into negativity, drama, or a bad attitude when in a toxic work environment. Some people want to pull you into their emotional drama—rude comments about others, sarcastic undertones, and the energy vampires who want to drag everyone else down with them. But unfortunately, people don't even realize that they have a negative attitude because it has become a habit and spills into their personal lives.

Self-reflect are you personally responsible for the drama since you are in charge of your area? If yes, how can you change it?

When working in a toxic environment, people may start to take everything personally because of the feeling of being verbally attacked, one-upping, taken advantage of, or pointing out mistakes or faults, especially if peers want to move higher in management. They will do anything to make you look bad if they feel you are a threat. As time goes on, it takes a toll on people's emotions, values, and self-worth.

We all contribute to the workplace vibe in some way or another by how we interact and communicate our thoughts, instructions, crucial feedback, praise, and dealing with backstabbing, betrayal, and interpersonal relationships.

This situation is one of the biggest challenges people face when working with others.

However, there is hope.

What are some strategies to help you stay positive?

  1. When your peer is causing conflict, think about the best way to handle this situation. What are their motives? Should you walk away and not engage and excuse yourself from the conversation? How will it appear if you walk away or stay and engage? Is this person setting you up to react unfavorably in front of others? If you react and respond unfavorably, is it worth the consequences? If it is an employee, you will need to engage in private after both of you have had time to self-reflect on the situation and calm down the heated emotions—Journal how you are feeling and brainstorm solutions to resolve the conflict or crisis. Keep your journal in a locked, safe place.
  2. When there are unkind remarks about someone else, say something nice about that person. This action tends to halt the conversation.
  3. Listen to uplifting music, recite positive affirmations and go for a walk to get clarity.

Be the person you want to be around. Focus on what you want in your life and remove the thoughts of what you don't—set goals for how you will change your situation and put them into action. Hire a leadership and life coach to help you get where you want to be. ~ Patti

Episode 13 - Exploring Changing The Feeling of Dread At Work To Excitement Again From Chaos To Calm

Episode 13 - Exploring Changing The Feeling of Dread At Work To Excitement Again From Chaos To Calm

This podcast episode will discuss and reflect on changing the feeling of dread at work to excitement again.

Hi, Managers and Supervisors. How's it going?

Do you remember the days you were excited to get up and work?

You loved having this career and learning new things. You lit up the office with your enthusiasm. You were like a sponge; you soaked up all the knowledge you could get.

When did everything at work change from excitement to dread?

Was it a slow fade over time?

How did it happen?

What changed in you, and when did you start to dread going into the office?

Was there disappointment or being set up for failure?

A new boss, was there unethical people getting promoted?

A shift in the company vision or goals?

Unreasonable workload?

Have the work duties changed?

Too many ridiculous meetings?

Too many emails to answer?

Are the work schedule boundaries blurred?

We all have been here at some time or another with a job. We want something more challenging and exciting if you feel like this; maybe it is time for a new direction in your career path.

As managers or supervisors, we must realize that our employees also get to this point of dread when they no longer feel challenged or excited to come to work. We need to look for those signs that they are bored and the job is not lighting them up anymore.

What can you do to help them enjoy work again?

Has something changed in the work environment? If so, what is it? What's the true undercurrent causing the dread? Is there a solution?

A leader's words, actions, and deeds set the path for how the team interacts with you, the team, and customers, contributing to the energy and flow of the work environment.

Are you leading by your emotions, your staff's emotions, company policies, or critical thinking?

How is your attitude at work affecting those around you and yourself?

You know what you want and what you don't want. So what is holding you in a job that you feel bored and on the road to nowhere? What can you do to change this back to feeling excited again? Do you have a mentor or coach helping you to succeed and promote within your company?

How is your employee's attitude at work?

What's holding them back in their job performances?

Are you mentoring and coaching them to succeed?

What could make you feel alive again in your work situation?

Reflect on all these questions and think about what are some solutions for you. You know something needs to give, but the only way it will change is if you put it into action.

Episode 12 - Exploring How To Say No When Overcommitted From Chaos To Calm

Episode 12 - Exploring How To Say No When Overcommitted From Chaos To Calm

Exploring How to Say No When Overcommitted From Chaos To Calm

How do we truly have a balanced life?

Between running a business or having a demanding career,

family time, alone time with spouse, volunteering, hobbies,

taking a vacation and all other promised commitments.

We get pulled in many different directions, sometimes

bringing us to our breaking point. Being overwhelmed

can create the appearance that someone wants you to

do something for them, and you feel obligated to do it,

and you are already overbooked and can't do one more

thing.

What are the signs it is time to say no?

  • feel stress, anxiety, and panic.
  • You don't want to do it.
  • It is not something you enjoy
  • You're the go-to person.
  • You can't get what you already promised completed
  • by the deadline dates.
  • You feel if you say no to that person, they won't like you,
  • or worse, your boss will be disappointed and punish you somehow.

Do any of these statements describe your situation?

If yes, are you ready to start saying no?

Action Steps:

  • Make a list of all your obligations.
  • Checkmark the ones you enjoy doing.
  • Circle the ones you don't.
  • The commitments you don't want, slowly start
  • removing them from your life.

Take one step at a time and say no to things you

don't have time for or don't want to do. When you

start saying no, it will feel uncomfortable at the start;

however, you will be set free to enjoy being you.

Today's Podcast Affirmation:

I say "NO" easily!

Episode 10 - Exploring Good Boundaries In The Workplace as a Manager and Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Episode 10 - Exploring Good Boundaries In The Workplace as a Manager and Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors. How's it going?

In today's podcast episode, we explore having good boundaries in the workplace.

Have you ever worked with someone who has no sense of boundaries?

What do I mean?

Here's an example:

Someone who asks you personal things or wants you to do something for them is entirely out of line, sarcastic, embarrassing, and takes advantage? They have no filter or common sense that it is not appropriate.

It could be your boss, a co-worker, or an employee.

How do you handle these situations without feeling rude, resentful, or used?

Here's an example of setting boundaries with a person with no filter or asking things that are none of their business

I've worked with people who would say what they were thinking without stopping and pausing before speaking. There was no holding back if the words were unkind, insensitive, rude, pushy, harsh, gossip, or nosy.

I remember working with a person that loved to gossip about everyone at work. She would come into my office and start talking about others or trying to get information out of me. I would say I am swamped right now or change the subject or stand up and tell her I have to go. Finally, she stopped coming into my office to gossip.

What if someone is harsh, unkind, rude, and pushy to you? Ask them - how you are doing or what's going on. You would be surprised how that can change the conversation from hostile to civil. Stating what's going on gives them a chance to explain how they feel about their situation or problem.

Here's an example of someone that takes advantage - the Doer and Slacker

The doer personality will sometimes take on your people's work without recognizing that the slacker is pawning it off. Especially when a project is close to a deadline in a team environment, the Doer will step in to finish the project on time.

How does a Doer get the slacker to complete their part of the project? By not rescuing them. Let the project deadline go over, and don't protect the slacker, the uncompleted task assigned to the slacker, and everyone knows it. If the slacker is accountable for their actions, they will have to start stepping up to complete their part when everyone doesn't let them get away with it. Keeping up with the boundary of not doing the slacker work is necessary to change the behavior and for the boss to become aware. Remember, it is not your responsibility for that person's lack of completion. You are responsible for yourself and you alone; this is a complex concept for the Doer, but setting the boundary of not covering and doing all the work will stop being taken advantage of and give you more time to do the things you enjoy.

As a manager or supervisor, there are times when employees push the boundaries, asking you things you can't discuss and communicating to them that you can't comment on this.

What are some boundary techniques you use at work?

Episode 9 - Exploring Journaling For Managers and Supervisors From Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors, How's it going?

In today's podcast episode, we will be exploring the technique of journaling in the workplace as a manager and supervisor and how it may help keep you in the proper perspective during challenging situations.

Journaling may work out specific problems, generate ideas, and brainstorm. Writing down thoughts, ideas, and emotions can help release tension and encourage creative thinking. This writing can help develop new ideas for products and services and improve customer service techniques. Focusing on the concept, process, or development through journaling may challenge you to discover creative solutions.

Journaling Questions:

  1. What happens if you react right now or at this moment?
  2. What will happen if you decide not to respond?
  3. What are the benefits of walking away and taking time to reflect before handling the situation?
  4. How can you handle this situation calmly?
  5. How will you overcome obstacles in the way?
  6. After you have time to reflect, how will you respond?
  7. What are your action steps now?

Episode 8 - Exploring Building Self-Confidence in a Work Environment that Tears You Down From Chaos to Calm

Episode 8 - Exploring Building Self-Confidence in a Work Environment that Tears You Down From Chaos to Calm

In this podcast, I talk about the real things that most people are afraid to talk about as a manager and supervisor.

Why is that? Fear.

If not discussed, how will change happen?

As good managers and supervisors, our job is to lift employees' to their highest potential, encourage them, build their self-confidence and help them succeed in what they do at work.

What if the work culture doesn't support this type of leadership philosophy?

Do it anyway. You and your employees need and want to be encouraged to flourish.

But who inspires and uplifts the manager and supervisor?

(Yourself) and sometimes your staff will inspire you on difficult days.

The area you manage will prosper compared to the work culture that tears others down around you.

How do you build self-confidence when others tear you down in the workplace?

  • Recite Affirmations throughout the day.
  • Take a break and get away from the office for a few minutes.
  • Take a walk to clear your mind.
  • Listen to some calming music.

Remember that people unhappy with themselves will tear down others, thinking they look good. But, instead, they don't look good at all. When someone is verbally mean to you, step back and remember this. What is driving them to act unkind or controlling?

Some people think that tearing down others makes them look better than others. But unfortunately, they are too busy clawing their way to the top to care about how they make others feel.

Say your boss gives you a project, and they take it back because you aren't doing it the way they would. Again, it is their control issues that are surfacing. I understand this can hurt, primarily if you work very hard on the project. Reflect on what you can do in the future, so this doesn't happen again? Ask questions on their thought process of what they want from this project. Occasionally update them on the project and how it is going. If you are silent and not updating, they may assume you are not as far ahead as you are.

You are in a management meeting and asked for your opinion. A coworker disagrees with you wanting to show they are better than you to your boss while trying to provoke you to get upset react unprofessionally towards them. Before responding, reflect on this person who wants you to react unfavorably. Breathe. If a response is expected, calmly say why this is your opinion and why it will work without lashing out at the coworker.

Make a difference in your workplace by being compassionate, empathic, a good mentor, honest, straightforward, and kind. The workplace needs more of this kind of leadership than destroying each other's self-confidence and reputation; creating a cohesive workplace and lifting people will help change the workplace from chaos to calm.

Episode 7 - Exploring The Feeling of Being Unheard and Underappreciated at Work From Chaos to Calm

Episode 7 - Exploring The Feeling of Being Unheard and Underappreciated at Work From Chaos to Calm

In this podcast episode, we will explore the feeling of being unheard and underappreciated at work?

This topic is for anyone who feels that they are not recognized or appreciated. As a manager and supervisor, this is a daily occurrence stuck in the middle between top management and employees and getting crap from both sides. So every day, you push down resentment, disappointment, words, anger, and chaos within yourself and others.

One of these days, it will bubble over, and the dragon will explode with harsh words and actions.

You are to pretend everything is great when you don't believe it yourself in the decisions made from above, but you have to enforce and ensure it is completed and done that way. You have to convince employees to change how they do things when they disagree and don't want to.

When you speak up with your concerns, you are ignored and labeled as trouble-makers or uncooperative. The yes people promote and get recognition for your work. You are the doer and get things done but not acknowledged for all your accomplishments.

Your boss has promised you a promotion numerous times, but it doesn't happen, and eventually, a yes person gets the position and over you.

How heartbreaking is that?

You're so good at your job your boss doesn't want you to move up they keep you stuck in a dead-end job or career.

Being ethical may get you passed over for a promotion.

Why is that?

Do employers want honorable people or not?

Isn't it better to be an honest person than not?

I'm lost for words because this is really happening, people.

Keeping your mouth shut is expected, and nodding your head in agreement is the norm instead of working together to make things better and sharing ideas and processes to streamline.

Keeping mouths shut and agreeing is causing chaos, resentment, overload, anxiety, and burnout in the workplace because things aren't getting done correctly and efficiently.

How can this change?

How many of you out there has a boss you can sit down with and say; this isn't working; the staff is frustrated and on overload? If you do. Show some appreciation to them every once in a while. They need encouragement to keep pushing on with a thankless job. These people want to make a difference and want to do what is right, and they do open their mouths and disagree at times, even when rejected and not appreciated.

When people feel appreciated, heard, and can express their ideas, they might go the extra mile to speak up and change the environment from chaos to calm.

Today's podcast Affirmation

I am heard and appreciated!

Episode 6 - Exploring The Power of Pausing, Reflecting Before Responding From Chaos to Calm

Episode 6 - Exploring The Power of Pausing, Reflecting Before Responding From Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors. How's it going?

In this podcast episode, I will be discussing the Technique of pausing before reacting or responding as a Manager or Supervisor.

Have you ever responded from a knee-jerk reaction and wished you hadn't?

Have you considered stopping, pausing, and reflecting before reacting as a manager and supervisor when in the middle of chaos?

I know this can be difficult at times, especially when in the middle of a crisis. However, in leadership, we're geared to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

When taking a pause and time to reflect, we won't jump immediately to the wrong conclusion or react unfavorably or lash out.

Many times in my career, I didn't pause and reflect before responding, and I regretted it because it went from calm to chaos by my knee-jerk reaction. Have you done that as well?

Think about all the times you reacted harshly or over the top.

How did that work for you?

Probably not good for you looking like an ass or for the person or people around you.

Do you wish you could go back in time and change your response?

Using the pause, reflecting before responding can help you not regret your reaction if used at that moment.

When at work and someone is rude to you and disagrees. Pause for three to five seconds before responding. Pausing will allow you time to reframe your response or decide not to react and change the situation from the emotions of chaos to calm.

Have you ever received an email at work that put you into a rage?

Pause, Reflect and Don't send the email response right away. You may regret it and could damage your career or reputation!

I think everyone has sent an email they regretted sending or replying some time or another.

What if you do receive a nasty passive/aggressive email?

Before responding to the email:

  1. Write out your reply.
  2. Please don't send it and walk away.
  3. If possible, sleep on it.
  4. Rewrite the email response when you have calmed down.
  5. Have someone else read it to help tone down the language before hitting the send button.
Here's A Quote To Remember: "Anger doesn't solve anything. It builds nothing, but it can destroy everything". - author unknown

Don't get me wrong, as a manager or supervisor. You have to be direct with employees to inspire them to improve their work performance. We can't ignore the situation and let it continue. Have a plan on how to address it. Write it out and practice what and how to say it. There are also times when you need to respond immediately and make a quick decision. When possible, take the opportunity to pause and reflect.

What is happening around you?

It may change your approach and captivate a great solution.

How can you practice pausing and reflecting into your leadership routine and have it become a habit?

Here are some Self Reflection Questions to Ponder or Journal about:

What are your thoughts about pausing and reflecting?

How will you incorporate it into your leadership style?

Episode 5 - Exploring The Management Philosophy - You've Got A Pulse, You've Got the Job From Chaos to Calm

Episode 5 - Exploring The Management Philosophy - You've Got A Pulse, You've Got the Job From Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors. How's it going?
In this podcast episode, I will be discussing hiring staff and why it is not a good idea to hire someone with the Management Philosophy - If You've Got A Pulse - You've Got The Job!
I was at an appointment almost a year ago, and the doctor told me that they were desperate to hire someone quickly. She said if they got a pulse, they got the job. We both laughed. She said we need another body in here as soon as possible. I responded, Sometimes, that doesn't always work out because they may not be the right fit or have a good work ethic. The funny thing is my husband was talking to me a couple of months before that and suggested that I should write a blog post for "You've Got A Pulse, You Got the Job!"
I guess God and the universe were telling me it was time to discuss this topic. So I did write a blog post about this topic back then, and I wanted to share it on the podcast because, as a manager or supervisor, I feel this is not a good leadership practice.
Lowering the hiring standards is not the answer!
Take some time in the hiring process to get to know the candidate. Then, review the resume and job application.
Does this person change jobs every few months? If so, why? Are they promoting or some other reason listed? If not listed, ask the candidate.
What kind of positions have they done in the past? Is it equal to the job qualifications?
Have specific questions about the job in the interview for the candidate to answer. Were the answers clear and concise, and right? After the interview, call the candidate's references. Have specific questions about attendance, team player, customer service, and work performance.
If references check out with positive recommendations to the questions answered, ask the candidate to come back and meet your staff if this is allowable in your company.
Have the candidate engage with the team and see what the job duties entail.
Remember, the employees have a vested interest because they have to work with this person. If you have an open, honest relationship with your employees, they will give you their opinion. Ultimately you have the final answer on who to hire and who not to hire.
Spending a little time checking out the candidate may save you, your staff, and customers frustration and protect the company's bottom-line on training and hiring the wrong person.
Here are some Self Reflection Questions to Ponder or Journal about:
What have been my hiring experiences in the past?
What worked well and what didn't?
What suggestions from this podcast will I incorporate into my hiring process?

Episode 4 - Exploring How To Respond To Unprofessionalism From Chaos to Calm

Episode 4 - Exploring How To Respond To Unprofessionalism From Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors. How's it going?

Sometimes in our careers, we have all worked with someone unprofessional. They may come across like they don't care, don't even know how to behave in a professional setting, or even realize their behavior is unprofessional.

How do most people usually respond? Avoidance!  They would rather avoid the situation instead of addressing the unprofessionalism.

Why?

Because it is uncomfortable. Whether new or experienced, many managers and supervisors shy away from confrontation, thinking that the behavior will go away or disappear. However, in most cases, the behavior gets worse when it's not dealt with and continues.

Is there a way to help or mentor them?

Yes, of course, there is, by addressing the behavior. However, people can't change if they don't know their behavior is displeasing.

Calmly explain to the unprofessional person how to be treated with respect. Give some examples of what is respectful and courteous.

Here are some Self Reflections to Ponder or Journal about: 1. What were some of your experiences dealing with unprofessionalism?

2. What did you learn from these experiences?

Today's podcast Affirmation

I recognize the beauty around me, even when I am in the presence of unprofessionalism.

Episode 3 - Exploring The Pressure of Perfection on Managers and Supervisors From Chaos to Calm

Episode 3 - Exploring The Pressure of Perfection on Managers and Supervisors From Chaos to Calm

Hi, Managers and Supervisors. How's it going?

In this podcast episode, I will talk about the pressures of perfection on managers and supervisors.

As Managers and Supervisors, we put a lot of expectations on ourselves as well as others.

So why do we feel we have to be perfect?

Are we putting those expectations on ourselves, or do people expect us to be perfect with our attitude, appearance, decisions, and performance?

It appears that perfection is expected and pressured onto Managers and Supervisors, which trickles down to the employees — the appearance of being perfect and pointing out other people's mistakes and faults accompanied by harsh judgment has become the norm in workplaces. In this type of environment, there is a lack of focus, creativity, and willingness to try new things. As a result, people don't grow, nor do the products, services, and revenue.

It's okay to make mistakes as long as we learn from them and not continually repeat them. How feedback is delivered can make or break a person, whether at work, home, volunteering, or among friends. Too much nitpicking and micromanaging is why good employees leave.

A good leader will let employees try new and different processes, especially if the current approach isn't working, outdated, or becoming mundane. Listening is essential to know what is working and what is not. Being approachable and welcoming is the first step to building trust, hearing what people feel and new ideas, and realizing that mistakes happen. Finally, good leaders are flexible — having a crucial conversation on what happened and working together on how to fix the situation—talking about what worked and what didn't and coming up with a plan to make it better with an agreeable resolution.

What if you are a manager or supervisor who doesn't like conflict?

Overcoming the fear of conflict will reduce anxiety, strengthen courage, and promotes better communication skills. Start by responding to emails, voicemails, and texts, even short and the point. Something is better than nothing. Meet with employees, listen, and be engaged. As you address complex situations, it does get easier as time goes on. Communication skills are an essential part of becoming a better leader.

Managers and Supervisors are the hardest on themselves. When projects fail, they take it to heart and feel awful and embarrassed.

Here are some Self-Reflect Questions to ponder when a mistake or failure happens.

What did I learn?

What will I do differently next time?

What areas do I need to improve?

What did I learn about myself, customers, clients, superiors, and employees from this experience?

An Affirmation to recite to get you through during or after a mistake or failure:

I will not let mistakes from the past carry on into today.

Pretty much everyone wants to do a good job and wants to please their superiors, customers, employees, and clients. So when mistakes happen, knowledging them by taking action steps to rectify them. By doing this, it will reflect, you are an honest person with integrity. This imperfect world sure does need more managers and supervisors like this. Letting go of perfection and being authentic changes the workplace from chaos to calm.

Episode 2 - Exploring Self-Talk and Emotions of the Manager and Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Episode 2 - Exploring Self-Talk and Emotions of the Manager and Supervisor From Chaos to Calm

Today, we will explore self-talk and emotions as a manager or supervisor when everything seems not to be going right in the workday, from employees to yourself, and how to change the chaos to calm.

Have you ever felt so underappreciated at work? You try so hard, and it just doesn't seem to go as you planned. Others don't seem to get the big picture no matter how many times you think you communicated it. You feel like everyone doesn't seem to care. So why don't they get it?

It can be chaotic to a Manager or Supervisor; heightened emotions and frustration levels escalate towards others.

I felt this way many times.  Thinking I was communicating clearly and later realizing that was not the case.  How does the communication style change from chaotic to calm?

Here are some possible questions that may be going through your mind during these times of frustration:

  • Did I communicate what I wanted correctly?
  • I feel I didn't handle my disappointment and frustration very well?
  • How, as a supervisor, do I handle this situation in a calm manner?
  • What happened to people's passion for their work or careers?
  • Have people lost their sense of purpose?
  • Why are so many people just going through the motions towards their jobs?
  • Is there no sense of pride anymore?
  • What happened?

Stop, take a deep breath, and pause.

What positive affirmations can you recite to shift your perspective towards yourself and others to communicate better?

How about reciting these affirmations to get you started and through the day?

I am a good communicator!

I am a confident leader!

When you believe you can make a shift, you usually do!

Being a manager or supervisor, you may have encounter situations throughout your day and get very frustrated. However, I believe most people are not doing what they want to be doing. They may have outgrown the job and may not be pursuing their true calling or career path in life. So they dread getting up every day to a job that brings no satisfaction or purpose in life.  If so, they would love to get up every morning and be excited to go to work every day instead of hitting that snooze button numerous times and dragging themselves out of bed with no purpose or passion.

Getting to know the person you are talking to, their learning style, and personality traits is a good start in connecting and communicating better.

How can you help bring some spark back in the workplace and assist your employees in igniting some passion for their job?

  • Ask the employee is there a project, task, or something they would like to learn within your department.  Could you give, teach or mentor them on a particular project?  Some employees don't want to learn anything new; they want to do their job and go home.  That's okay by asking the employee you know if they do or don't want to learn something new.
  • Talk with them about what aspects they like about their job, and this will give you some ideas for future tasks or assignments to give them in the future.
  • Listen to them talk about their aspirations in life.
  • Help them set attainable work goals.
  • Schedule training classes with them for self-development or new skills they would like to learn.
  • Delegate different job assignments to them. Get their feedback on what they liked and what they didn't like about the work.
  • Give them some variety in their job duties, so they don't become complacent and unhappy.

Episode 1 - Exploring How to Stop Ignoring The Hard Stuff and Go From Chaos to Calm

Episode 1 - Exploring How to Stop Ignoring The Hard Stuff and Go From Chaos to Calm

In this episode, I will discuss - How to Stop Ignoring the Hard Stuff and Go from Chaos to Calm. Have you ever had something to do at work, and you didn't want to do it? There are things as a manager or supervisor you don't want to do, but it is an essential part of the job.  You know what I mean, and not addressing it can cause more havoc in the workplace. Let me give you some examples: Not having crucial conversations with an employee about poor performance Prolonging a discussion with the team about not making goals An email you are told to write by your boss Calling back an angry customer or client Not participating or wanting to go to mandatory leadership meetings Delivering bad news, for example, no bonus, no raises, or possible layoffs within the company I am sure all of us at one time or another has put something off that might be uncomfortable or didn't want to do but was loading us down with it continually there, whether in worry, thought, or others depending on it. Wouldn't it make life and work more enjoyable if it was no longer in front of us but completed? Getting it completed takes off a heavy burden, and then you can focus on the other things you want to do. One of the ways to tackle the hard stuff is to do it first thing in the morning and get it out of the way.  If it is a massive project, break it down into tasks. Then, as you complete a portion of the project, you will feel like you are moving forward on getting it done. Checking that section off your to-do list, spreadsheet, or Trello board feels like an achievement and inspiration. Putting off the hard stuff or undesirable tasks doesn't contribute to becoming successful. However, once finished, you can move on to more enjoyable tasks and have a great sense of accomplishment. How to Break Free of Ignoring the Hard Stuff: Identify it is happening and Recognize it and decide to Focus on the task until completed Celebrate when finished Take control of all distractions such as responding immediately to email notifications, incoming voice mail messages, texts, instant messages, social media notifications. Set specific times and limits for these activities. Block off your calendar for the task.  Concentrate by tuning out or turning off all distractions and commit to that particular task. If working in the office, let others know you are working on something with a deadline or need to finish with no distractions if they could wait on questions.  By blocking the time on your digital calendar can help with limiting distractions. Halt any negative self-talk and replace these thoughts with positive Affirmations. I get things done!  By telling yourself, I can do this, and pray for strength to continue and remove all obstacles in the way; it will inspire you to keep going.  There were many times I would be sitting at my desk and thinking I can't do this, and I would pray, journal, and recite positive affirmations to get me through the task, situation, or sh*t storm happening around me. Sometimes getting started is the hardest, but the rewards are endless. First, setting your goal, coming up with a plan of action, and the most important thing is putting the plan into action. Here are some Self Reflections to ponder: What are some key factors which are enabling you to put off the hard stuff? What have you been putting off? How will it change your circumstances by getting them completed? Until next time!
