S1 Episode 24 Medcaravan: [CROATIA - EN] Local solidarity partnerships for agroecology in Croatia and importance of networking

Agroecological models are primarily related to small farms, which we have a lot of in Croatia (96 % of production is related to family farms average size 3-5 ha), and to production according to ecological principles. It would be extremely hard to survive on such farming models in a world of large-scale markets where the food is just commodity. LSPA make it possible. And more than that, they are strengthening local communities who learns about food and recognises the value of agroecology farming. In this episode we are presenting solidarity eco group connected to the solidarity eco market in Pula, Croatia and we are talking with Jocelyn Parot from URGENCI about importance of networking in spreading the movement.

Searching for forgotten fruit

Modern humanity uses less and less species in its diet. Traditional Mediterranean orchards were mixed and very diverse. In addition to the main fruit species, there were also those that were mainly used for feeding birds or species that hosted predators of pests such as the olive fruit fly. And some wild species could be used to make excellent marmalades and juices. With the help of variety, every centimetre was used, on the karst where the soil is often shallow. Which fruit species have we forgotten and what is their hidden role? We asked Željko Prgomet, doctor of agronomic sciences, Croatian recognized expert in Mediterranean fruit growing, a longtime professor at the Polytechnic in Rijeka and the owner of a nursery in Rovinj.

Organic wine in Pelješac, Croatia or how to infuse the natural beauty of traditional drywall terrace vineyard in a bottle

In this episode of the podcast, we talked with Denis Bogojević Marušić, a well-known organic vine grower and winemaker and owner of the small family winery Križ on Pelješac (https://vinarijakriz.com). Denis was one of the few young people who bravely and with a lot of enthusiasm started certified organic cultivation of vines in 2008. At that time, he was the first organic winegrower in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Today, he and his family cultivate 2 ha of vineyards at the Križ and Postup location. He grows local varieties Plavac mali, Grk and a smaller amount of Rukac or Maraština, and applies the principles of biodynamics. We asked him how he combines old and modern and what are the advantages of old varieties and the traditional way of growing on dry walls in general.

S1-Episode 15 Medcaravan: [CROATIA - HR] - Imanje Usamljena golubica – stare sorte u novom kontekstu

Imanje Usamljena golubica – stare sorte u novom kontekstu

The Lonely Dove estate - traditional varieties in a new context

In this episode, we visited the Lonely Dove estate in Mala Rasinjica near Križevci, Croatia, where we talked with Branko Funtek about the ecological cultivation of traditional varieties of cereals. In a simple and accessible way, our interlocutor shared his experiences and pleasure in a specific lifestyle with organic production. In addition to the importance of preserving traditional varieties and their role in today's organic production, we also touched on other topics such as soil care and changing the approach to cultivation to reduce the effects of erosion and preserve humus. The advantage of traditional varieties is that they produce larger amounts of straw, so it is possible to mulch the soil on the spot with the remains of one crop and reduce the need for mechanized cultivation. Although in the beginning, it was a lone example, Dove is no longer alone in the development and consideration of organic production. Find out why…

S1-Episode 13 Medcaravan: [ITALY - IT] - Fattoria agriturismo La Goccia

S2 - Episode 4 SALSIFI: Re-territorializing food production: The “Young Farmers Payment” on the menu!

S2 - Episode 4 SALSIFI: Re-territorializing food production: The “Young Farmers Payment” on the menu!

The following podcast helps to understand the necessary CAP reform, to reinforce generation renewals and changes in farming technics.

The discussion starts with Isabelle and Abdenour, young goat farmers. They explain their business model elaborated within a coop system and through short supply-chains system (mainly “AMAP” and local shops).

Although they are organic farmers and that their farm is part of a logic of re-teritorialization of food production, they are not eligible for the “Young farmers payment”. It’s an important CAP subsidy that secures substantially new and young farmers when they launch their activity.

Therefore, in the second part of the podcast, we met Florent, an organic farmer (market gardening, herbal plant and honey with his wife Sylvie). He is also a board member of the regional CSA network “Réseau des AMAP Ile-de-france”. He explains how - with allies - they advocate for a more inclusive and transformative CAP reform in 2022. The goal was to encourage the regional authority, in charge of some of the CAP subsidies, to engage those public funds to promote agroecological practices and organic farms. Changes in agricultural practices will be possible with a generation renewal.

Roberta is also the first producer on the national board of Slow food. Therefore, it is both through the work on the territory where she lives and works, and in the national network, that Roberta tells us about her experience of leadership, with a sensitive and capable look at the potential of a cooperative and collectivist approach.

Roberta, contributes in our podcast journey, and restores meaning to the issue of gender, but also to the role of the leader, in the agri-food networks that we see as sustainable.

S1-Episode 4 Medcaravan: [ITALY - IT]- Italia con Francesca Ercoli - Il Salto

S1-Episode 4 Medcaravan: [ITALY - IT]- Italia con Francesca Ercoli - Il Salto

We continue with our podcast series and this time we are delighted to introduce Francesca Ercoli of the Il Salto Azienda Agricola Project.

Francesca manages to tell us not only how she and her partner managed to transform a small piece of land, in a landscape characterised by wheat monoculture, into a multifunctional agro-ecological farm that does production and training.

Her testimony makes us understand the challenge of generational clashes in the agrarian world. Francesca also succeeds in giving us an interesting insight into the complementarity between male and female and the power of complementarity in the family that practices peasant agriculture.  Certainly, Francesca, like Marta, brings to light the limits of social policies in the agrarian world, relating to motherhood and fatherhood, an essential element that is increasingly emerging to revitalise and transform our agrifood system.

The vision of leadership that this testimony gives us is accompanied by the ability to receive 'continuous feedback' with all those with whom the project continuously dialogues, grows and builds community.  In short, Francesca explains to us, among other things, the steps that lead to an agroecological community and this too seems to us an essential contribution to our discussion on Mediterranean agroecology.

S1-Episode 3 Medcaravan: [ITALY - IT]- Italia con Martina Lo Cascio

S1-Episode 3 Medcaravan: [ITALY - IT]- Italia con Martina Lo Cascio

Here is the second podcast in the series "Mediterranean agroecology for women", that is, the second of a cycle of four podcasts recorded together with women who talk to us about 4 very interesting and different agroecology projects.
Today Martina Lo Cascio speaks to us, active in the Contadinazioni collective and in the Fuori Mercato network. The story of these projects brings out important aspects of agroecology, such as solidarity between workers, access to quality food, the development of the ability to work independently from vertical and unsustainable labor systems.
When we talk about social agroecology, an essential aspect of agroecology, we also talk about this. We are therefore excited to present production, distribution, trade unionism and networking practices, which confirm that it can be done.
What emerges, even from this testimony, is a vision of leadership that tries to cleanse itself of the ego and that tries to put together, not without difficulty, technical intelligence with the emotional one. The difficulties, of course, are also of gender. It emerges from the interview that some of these come from those characteristics that the patriarchal approach to leadership has identified as aspects of authority.
Perhaps these are the same difficulties that a "feminist leadership", rather than female, as Martina specifies, can and must deconstruct. Martina also helps us to reflect on something too little discussed in our networks, intersectionality, that is, that privilege, as well as deprivation and conflict, elements to pay attention to for true sustainability, are always to be looked at through different "glasses" worn. at the same time, and which always condition us: not only the gender but the ethnic group and the socio-economic class to which we belong.
Martina works as a researcher studying the agri-food chains, the conflicts and contradictions that arise in these. Tireless, she contributes with her work of social and political activism to the existence of local and network projects that allow agroecology to lead us all towards more social justice. For all these elements, and others, that Martina's testimony brings, we invite you to listen.

S1-Episode 2 Medcaravan: [ITALY - IT] - Italia La Terra è DONNA con Marta Galimberti di Cascina Bagaggera

Deafal's contribution to this March 8th is the first of a cycle of 4 podcasts recorded together with women who tell us about 4 interesting and different agroecology projects. Their voices tell, on the one hand, how agroecology is interpreted daily through objectives and practices. On the other hand, some aspects of how the gender issue intersects in daily and professional life and presents itself in ways that break stereotypes crystallized in the rural and agri-food world.
Thanks to "Formidable Vegetable" for the song "Get together"

In the first podcast of this series, we will hear Marta Baggagera from the Cascina Baggagera project, located between Monza and Lecco. The project, as she defines it, is a "somewhat varied" agricultural and livestock farm where between 15 and 20 people work on 25 hectares. They work with goats, chickens, pigs, some fruit trees, cereals and forage. . "An organic company that has always been oriented beyond organic for some years because organic is little compared to everything that is agroecology, that is, environmental sustainability, social ethics and energy." The Cascina Baggagera is also an agritourism, which offers tastings, and a non-profit association that takes care of disabled children. The sale is almost entirely direct, for the "choice of letting the consumer live the company." In fact, as Marta says "having the consumers involved showed more and more the benefits than the negative things of this choice ”.
