#509 - Dereck Lively departs for NBA...replacement incoming?
Hello Duke fans and welcome to the Duke Basketball...Roundup? YES! With the calendar moving to April, it’s official...we are the Duke Basketball Roundup Podcast! We spend a couple of minutes going through the new name and some of the changes that are forthcoming to the show over the next week as we move to our new home on Podbean.
The main highlight of the show isn’t us however...it’s the announcement that Dereck Lively has decided to depart Duke for the NBA Draft. Jason, Sam, and Donald reflect on the year that D-Live had for the Blue Devils and how they think he will carve out a terrific NBA career. We will always have 8 blocks against UNC, and his defense and motor are going to be something that teams really want in a 5 at the next level.
After the break, with Dereck Lively leaving, Duke is looking at the transfer portal. There are 4 big men out there that are looking at new homes that Duke has either contacted or fans are loosely linking to Duke, and we go through those players and what they bring to the table. In the end, while none of them have Lively’s qualities, Duke is right to try and add them to a team that is looking like one of the best in the country to start the 2023-24 season.
We have a new Twitter account! Find us on there @DukeRoundup. We will also have some new landing pages and links coming to you over the next week, but our trusty email address stays the same: DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com. Let us know your thoughts on the new name and any other topics that we can save for an offseason day!
DBR Bites #23 - Mitchell Year 2 loading!
On DBR Bites Episode 23, we have Donald and Sam react to the news that Duke forward Mark Mitchell is returning to Durham for his sophomore season! We discuss how valuable Mitchell’s return will be to this team and what he can improve on in year 2. His return is giving potential DPOY vibes!
We also comment on where he can improve on offense, and how his leadership and motor could serve the incoming freshman class well. Needless to say, we’re excited about Mark Mitchell’s return!
We also get some late breaking news while we’re recording that Kyle Filipowski has won the Kyle Macy Award, an award given to the nation’s top freshman. Flip wins the award over Alabama’s Brandon Miller. It’s a surprise award, but Flip deserves it and we react in real time to him winning this prestigious award. He’s the 5th Blue Devil to win the award, joining Jabari Parker, Brandon Ingram, Marvin Bagley III, and Zion Williamson.
We will be back as soon as the next player announces what they’re going to do, so you should probably look for another episode tomorrow as we close out March!
#508 - Whitehead chooses NBA, McDonald's All Americans on the menu
We have our first departure to the NBA Draft, and we discuss it on Episode 508. Dariq Whitehead is leaving Duke for the NBA, and we are not surprised given his draft prognosis falling somewhere in the mid-to-late first round. We discuss what he brought to the table and where he could fit at the next level. There’s a nice discussion about the Dariq Whitehead that was expected when he arrived on Duke’s campus as well as how he evolved with the injuries he suffered in the preseason and during the regular season. We’re all in agreement that his workouts will determine where he ends up in the draft.
After the break, we discuss the McDonald’s All American games that took place last night in Houston. Duke had 3 recruits in the Boys Game - Sean Stewart, Jared McCain, and Mackenzie Mgbako - and Jadyn Donovan in the Girls Game. We break down how each of them did, and we’re pretty convinced: the future is bright for both Duke Men’s and Women’s Basketball.
We will be back in your feeds again soon once we find out some of the other guys that have yet to make a decision about their futures. Until then, send us some questions that we could react to on a future episode at DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com.
#507 - Proctor returns
On this episode of the soon-to-be-renamed and now vaguely pre-rebranded Duke Basketball Report Podcast, we're talking Tyrese Proctor's return to Duke for his sophomore campaign, Celeste Taylor's news about the same, and Duke recruits' performance in the skills events at the McDonald's All American Game festivities on Monday.
Proctor announced his return with a quick social media post, and Jason and Sam are giddy, not just because they correctly predicted that Proctor would return, but because Proctor could be the latest Duke guard to show significant improvement in his second year, with recent examples like Tre Jones, Luke Kennard, and Grayson Allen for him to look up to. Jason tells us how much these guys improved after their move to West Campus, and we speculate about the ways that Proctor will distinguish himself with a full summer working with the staff and team in Durham.
After the break, we dive into Celeste Taylor's decision to return to Duke for one last season, and we finish with Jared McCain's performance in the three-point contest and Sean Stewart's in the dunk contest, both of which were winning displays. Duke fans have a lot to look forward to this fall when the team returns.
We'll be back to talk further NBA Draft and high all-star circuit news. Stay in touch like always at dbrpodcast at gmail.com!

#504 - Stats game recap
You will have to listen to find out who won, but it was not a pretty thing. It turns that Duke's season took many different turns than what we anticipated, from the good (Kyle Filipowski 2nd team All-ACC! Tyrese Proctor's emergence!) to the new as good (mostly injuries and Jacob Grandison not hitting his threes). All that said, though, we are holding ourselves accountable to our picks, at least the ones that were easy enough to track.
After the break, we review what happened in the second round of the women's NCAA tournament, where Duke lost a heartbreaker in Cameron to Colorado. Similar to the men, it's a frustrating way to end the season, but also similar to the men, the future appears to be bright, so we eagerly await the return of Duke Basketball this fall.
Stay in touch with us throughout the offseason as Duke players make their decisions for next year, and we will be back soon.

#503 - The end of Scheyer's first season
We dive deep into how the Volunteers dismantled Duke on defense. The Blue Devils had their lowest first half scoring output of the season, and without Mark Mitchell, Duke didn't have enough playmakers to counter Tennessee's attack at either end. Turnovers returned to plague Duke in a way we thought Scheyer's squad had shored up given their performance in the first round.
All that said, we have to spend a few minutes on the officiating, which most of us were not thrilled with. It was an overly physical game, and Duke couldn't figure out how to overcome the circumstances.
After the break, we have to touch on Duke Blue Planet's feature video on Dereck Lively II and his mother and on Purdue's loss to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the tournament. We'll be back on a future episode to recap the season and speculate about all of the players' pending NBA draft decisions, but until then, stay in touch with us via email and we will talk to you again very soon.

DBR Bites #22 - We Volunteer this preview
Duke is riding high off its victory over Oral Roberts, but they are meeting a team that has been great defensively all season. Jason gives us the metrics on what Tennessee has been doing great and where they may have weaknesses. They are missing their star point guard, but they have plenty of reasons why they are still a really good team.
After he takes off, Sam and Donald continue the preview by highlighting Tennessee's season and how they've struggled in recent weeks. Sam discusses some of the other key players and gives us a warm bath on Rick Barnes and the most recent times Duke has taken on Barnes-led teams.
We will be back at some point after the game on Saturday, which is at approximately 2:40pm ET. Let's go Duke!

#502 - Making easy work of Oral Roberts
After some of the great headlines we received, we get into the good. Duke had a ton of good in this game, beginning with the defense. We spend about 10 minutes discussing how great the defense was in this game and how some players who may have had off days on offense excelled on the defensive end for the Blue Devils.
Oh don’t worry, we discuss the offense as well, with Jeremy Roach destroying everyone and Dariq Whitehead raining 3s. Duke was tremendous on the night and it led to it being a very relaxing evening for fans. We do pinpoint a couple of items that Duke could improve on as they advance in the tournament.
After the break, we dish out our favorite plays, and there were plenty to choose from. Then, we have to talk about a couple of the major upsets from Day 1, including Furman over Virginia and Princeton over Arizona.
We will be back in your feeds literally this afternoon! We have another game tomorrow against the Tennessee Volunteers, and we will preview what to expect in a Bites episode, so stay tuned!

DBR Bites #21 - Bracket Busting with Booz!
Boozer has seen more ACC basketball than just about anyone, so we discuss the teams that made the NCAA Tournament and why they collectively have a chance to once again show that the conference deserves more respect than it’s getting. We of course talk about how far Duke can go and the key to success for the Blue Devils.
We then discuss his partnership with the DraftKings Zero Right Bracket Challenge presented by Pepsi Zero Sugar, where picking the wrong teams could get you some serious cash! Most of us are already picking the wrong teams in the bracket, and in this bracket those same wrong picks can make you a winner.
We also touch a bit on Boozer’s thoughts on Jon Scheyer and the job he’s done for Duke this year. Boozer is also the proud father of two twins - Cameron and Cayden - who are two of the best high school sophomores in the country. He talks to us about what it’s been like to witness their recruiting frenzy and how they may decide on where they end up going to college. We end our time with Boozer by asking for his Final Four picks and his champion, then react to Boozer’s interview and give our favorite moments.
The DBR Podcast will be back tomorrow evening to preview our opening game in the NCAA Tournament against Oral Roberts. Get those brackets in!

#500 - Kenny Dennard returns!!
We have a nice discussion with Kenny about this year’s Duke Blue Devils team, which is a 5 seed in the East Regional and one of the popular picks to get to at least the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. We talk about what has worked well for the Blue Devils lately and the Dog gives us his bracket picks. We also get to reflect on this year’s team and the job Jon Scheyer has done in his first season as head coach. Kenny also gives some insight on what it’s like for a team that has big expectations to try and fight it out in the NIT after a season that didn’t go to plan.
We love having Kenny Dennard on, and we thank all of you for being a part of 500 full episodes of the DBR Podcast. We will be back in your feeds real soon with more content this week, so stay tuned!

DBR Bites #19 - Back in the ACC Final
So, Duke takes down Miami on this episode, and we are excited to talk about Duke's emergence on offense. It was a parade of three-pointers, free throws, assists, and huge rebounding that send Duke into the final. Miami gave Duke a ton to deal with on defense, but Duke responded in a way we have come to expect from this suddenly mature team. The Blue Devils face Virginia in the final tonight, with one more revenge opportunity from February lingering before their seeding is solidified.
We'll be back to discuss the outcome of Jon Scheyer's first ACC championship game as head coach soon after it's over. Keep those headlines and reactions coming to dbrpodcast at gmail.com!

DBR Bites 18 - It's ACC Tournament time!
The Duke Blue Devils may enter the tournament as the 4 seed, but they are arguably the tournament favorites, as they are playing their best basketball of the season. As they wait for the winner of the Pitt Panthers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, we discuss Duke’s potential path to an ACC title and what they will need to do in order to cut down the nets in Greensboro. We also look at the rest of the bracket and determine what some teams will need in order to get a place in the NCAA Tournament when it’s revealed on Sunday.
We also quickly give kudos to Jon Scheyer for being a Joe B. Hall Award finalist. The award is given to a coach in his first season, and while we don’t think Jon will win it, he absolutely deserves to be a finalist. Also, we give congrats to Daniel Jones for his $160M contract extension with the New York Giants...Danny Dimes now is Danny Dollars!!
We will be back later this week as the Blue Devils begin the tournament to recap whoever we play on Thursday!

#497 - All-ACC awards
Kyle Filipowski is the headliner for Duke, capturing Duke's fourth rookie of the year award in a six-year span. Dereck Lively II also got two nods, one for the all-defense team and the all-rookie team. Tyrese Proctor gets an all-rookie team mention, and we have a bit of quibbling to do with Jeremy Roach getting votes for most improved player and player of the year. Our biggest annoyance is that Jon Scheyer got no love for coach of the year, a travesty we explore in more depth than it probably needed.
The podcast will return this week to preview Duke's potential path to an ACC championship, but until then, stay in touch with the show at dbrpodcast at gmail.com, and we will return soon. It's March!

#494 - Physical Duke clinches perfect Cameron record
Donald was in the building, and he starts by giving his take on some of the Senior Night festivities that occurred. Cameron was at full tilt, and the passion was just as palpable as the physicality in this game. We go through some of the headlines and then get to the good from this game, featuring Jeremy Roach’s performance, Dereck Lively and Kyle Filipowski having tremendous effort on defense and on the glass, and Tyrese Proctor locking down Terquavion Smith. The game was physical, and Donald highlights just how tough this young group played.
After the break, we get into what didn’t go well for the Blue Devils in this one, from some shooting woes to a tough night moving the ball around in the offense. We close with our favorite plays, and while we don’t look ahead to that team we will face this weekend, we have a thing about hot streaks and Duke can add to one before the end of the regular season.
We’ll be back later this week with some more Bites and more content as we enter March!

DBR Bites #17 - ACC vs. FSU/Clemson
FSU called out the conference the other day, saying that “something needs to change” with regards to the current grant rights deal that runs through 2036. Clemson echoed FSU’s sentiments, with both calling for the ACC to give them more money because they draw the best TV ratings for football. Sam and Donald discuss FSU and Clemson’s desire for an unbalanced revenue sharing, with an eye on how Duke would be affect should the ACC even consider such a move.
There’s also the angle of what would happen should FSU and Clemson try to leave the ACC, and whether the conference should attempt to get out of their current deal and restructure it so that it expires earlier, giving the conference member institutions a crack at a bigger slice of the pie. It’s a fascinating conversation to help jump start your day as you await Duke’s final home game tonight!

DBR Bites #16 - How to tame the Wolfpack
Last time the two teams met up in Raleigh on January 4th, it was a terrible night for the Blue Devils. NC State has been pretty good since then, and they’re just 1 game behind Duke in the ACC standings. Still, Duke also has been pretty good of late, and it creates a matchup where Duke has to feel confident that they can produce a better outing than they did almost 2 months ago.
We also discuss the guys for the Wolfpack that destroyed Duke last time out, with DJ Burns being a point of focus alongside the very talented backcourt of Terquavion Smith and Jarkel Joiner. Duke will hopefully play with a ton of energy and intensity, with a chance to end their Cameron schedule with a perfect record.
We will have another Bites for you tomorrow before the game, so stay tuned to your feeds for that!

#493 - Duke carves up the Hokies
There were some great headlines, and we go through some of our favorites before diving into all the good that came out of this game. Jeremy Roach’s 10-10-5 game and Dereck Lively having a perfect game on offense highlights the good, but it was also Duke’s defense on Virginia Tech that made this game fun to watch. All starters in double figures meant that it was a comfortable night for Duke.
After the break, we get into the couple of things that didn’t go well last night, namely the slight reduction in production for Kyle Filipowski and from the bench. We also dish out our favorite plays.
Jason Evans was in the building last night, and while he’s on the road somewhere in the Smoky Mountains, he tells us about an interaction with TV Teddy Valentine and just how it was being in Cameron for the game. He also tells his adventurous story of getting to the game and how he almost didn’t make it to Cameron in time. We then end with giving out our Player of the Week awards.
There are two more games in the regular season for Duke, and we will be back early in the week to preview their next game against NC State. Until then, continue to send us emails at DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com!

DBR Bites #15 - Seeking revenge against VT
Jason and Sam are back to break this one down, and we have to first acknowledge that we know there has been some reporting this week about Jon Scheyer's recruiting approach and Mike Krzyzewski's retirement thoughts, but we need a full episode to dive into all of that.
What can Duke fans expect on Saturday? We're looking forward to better big man play and a full appearance by Dariq Whitehead. Virginia Tech hasn't put themselves in a good position for a tournament appearance, but they are always excited to spoil a home stretch in Cameron. Speaking of home arenas, we take a very weird detour into discussing concerts at Reynolds Coliseum.
We'll be back again soon, but in the meantime, don't forget to write to us. You know the drill.

#491 - Balanced Duke too much weight for Louisville's house of Cards
After we go through some of the great headlines we received, we move to the good, and there was a ton to cover in this game. The low number of turnovers in this ballgame is certainly a cause for celebration, and it led to incredible ball movement and a ton of assists. The team also shot pretty well and everyone was getting involved. All 5 starters in double figures and the 3 bench contributors giving a lot made this an overall good team win, our first time this season winning the 2nd game of a Saturday/Monday back-to-back.
After the break, we do shift to what needs to improve, beginning with the missed high percentage shots leading to shooting droughts. The quick start by Louisville also is discussed as we look at what didn’t go well in this game. We cap the episode with some of our favorite plays, and there were a bunch to choose from!
We will be back this week with some Bites hopefully as we get ready to host Virginia Tech this weekend. Stay in touch with us at DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com!

DBR Bites #14 - Nolan Smith returns to Cameron
Sam and Donald break down Louisville's rocky season, but we have to highlight some good developments lately for Louisville, most notably a win Saturday against competitive Clemson, whom Louisville held to an abysmal night from three. Durham native El Ellis has also been a revelation for the Cardinals this year, averaging over 18 points a game, and he is sure to be fired up to be playing back home.
We'll be back again, hopefully with the full podcast crew, to recap this one and look ahead at another long layoff before a Saturday matchup. Keep emailing us at dbrpodcast at gmail.com - we haven't decided a new name for the show, so keep those ideas coming!

DBR Bites #11 - Brey's last visit
As we dive into the Irish, we're somewhat flummoxed at their underperformance this season given their experience and prior ACC success. Freshman JJ Starling hasn't performed to expectations, having been removed from the starting lineup recently, and Notre Dame is having a hard time stopping opponents from scoring, despite a relatively slow tempo.
If you'll be at the game on Tuesday, stop into Devil's Krafthouse beforehand to say hi to Donald Wine!

#488 - Hoo hired these officials?
The headlines from this game are seemingless endless, but in addition to the officiating, we have to highlight some of Duke's successes in this game, hanging tough with a UVA team that has been the best in the conference this season, even though UVA forced a season-high 22 turnovers from the Blue Devils. We're excited to see how Duke uses its good from this game down the stretch in the ACC.
As for the bad, the podcast team are collectively hoping that this is a blip for Flip, as Duke will need him to be successful in the postseason. We have a unanimous and unlikely player of the week selection, and we will be back soon to preview the Notre Dame game on Tuesday. Until then, keep the emails coming to dbrpodcast at gmail.com!

DBR Bites #9 - Time to meet the Wahoos
Virginia has a ton of seniors and juniors that Duke fans should already be familiar with, and this preview shows that UVA continues to do what they normally do successfully: slow down the tempo while remaining incredible efficiency on offense and defense. Their Pack Line defense causes a lot of turnovers and frustration, so Duke has their work cut out for them. Experience will be a factor, and Duke will need to try and speed up the tempo to get more possessions. Sam and Donald break it all down and give fans the scoop on what Duke needs to get back on track Saturday afternoon.
We will be back this weekend to recap the game, and let’s hope Duke comes out with fire and desire.

DBR Bites #8 - Grant Hill & 9th Wonder discuss Duke and Black culture
Grant Hill, interviewed by 9th Wonder, details what it was like for him when he was recruited by teams like the Georgetown Hoyas that had way more cred in the Black community than the Duke Blue Devils. However, Hill describes how Black culture intersected with Duke Basketball and how some of the players on the team embraced the culture and hip hop music to bring the team together.
Sam and Donald break down the interview and key elements of Hill and 9th’s discussion, with Donald including some of his experiences that don’t make the interview’s final cut. It’s a great discussion to carry through the middle of the week!
We will be back tomorrow to preview the big game on Saturday against the Virginia Cavaliers.

#487 - Hurricanes humble hungover Blue Devils
Duke got humbled by the Miami Hurricanes, and it was clear from the very beginning that the energy wasn’t there. Sam Klein was in the building for the game, so we open with his observations and headlines before we get to the good.
Despite the blowout loss, there was some good things to come out of last night. Sam specifically has some positive thoughts about how Jon Scheyer did his rotations last night, and we had a 10-5-5 performance from Dereck Lively that needs to be talked about. We also get into the NET rankings and how this loss actually might have helped Duke in that all-important metric.
After the break, we get into the bad, and there’s a lot to be discussed. Donald starts with the lack of energy in the Duke uniforms on the floor and how his prediction about the game ended up becoming a harsh reality. There are several points to be made about how the team played as well as the details being largely missing on the night. We end with more talk about the NET and what Duke has to look forward to over the final 7 games of the regular season, and we actually have a couple favorite plays.
We will have a couple of DBR Bites very soon, so check your feed over the next couple of days for more Duke discussions as we get ready for UVA this weekend.

#484 - GTHC: The Preview!
Duke comes in fresh off a win against Wake Forest, but UNC enter fresh off a home loss last night to Pitt. Still, it won’t matter in the biggest rivalry in college basketball, as both these teams look to hit the ground running with a lot of energy. The preview starts with how UNC has done over the course of the season as well as the ACC. We discuss where they were at the start of the season - at the top - and how they crashed out of the top 25 to where they are now.
We get into some of the key things that UNC shows on the eye test before we discuss some of the players that Duke fans should already know. Finally, we get into the metrics and some of the intangibles that Duke will need to bring to the table to win on Saturday. Donald will be in the building with 9,314 others, and Cameron will be in top form. Can Duke ride that intensity to a win over their archrivals?

DBR Bites #7 - 2023 Duke Football schedule released!
Duke’s got a pretty loaded schedule this year, with 9 opponents on the schedule having played in bowl games last season. It starts with a Labor Day matchup against Clemson, and the schedule doesn’t get any easier from there. Notre Dame comes to town on September 30th, and the back half of the schedule has two sets of back-to-back road trips. Duke travels to Florida State and Louisville, and they have a Thursday night game at home against Wake Forest 9 days before the big game down in Chapel Hill on Veterans Day. Sam and Donald discuss the ins and outs of this schedule and make their early picks for most important game of the season.
Finally, Kyle Filipowski was named on the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 list last night. We briefly discuss this honor, which is full of upperclassmen. It’s a testament to the season that Flip has had thus far for Duke.
We’ll be back tomorrow after the Wake Forest game to recap that. Don’t forget, send your best headlines to us at DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com!

DBR Bites #6 - Welcoming Wake Forest back to town
Jason and Donald first give an update on the status of Dariq Whitehead’s injured leg. He’s not completely ruled out for tomorrow, so we discuss whether we think we’ll see the star freshman return to the court. We then get into what Wake has done since then, with a couple of tough losses and one pretty big win.
Wake had some players have some big time performances a month ago in Winston-Salem, and Duke has to shut them down. Duke’s also been shooting a lot better lately, and those trends make this an intriguing battle.
We will be back at some point after the game to provide a full recap. There’s another game later this week, but we focus for now on this big one right in front of us.

The Hokies come with the ability to force teams into not moving the ball around, and their hope is to make shots and take you out of the game. We talk about what the Hokies have done well, despite their spiraling record, and where Duke may have a mismatch. This is a bit of a revenge game after the Hokies beat Duke in last season’s ACC Tournament final, but Duke will need to put together another good shooting game from beyond the arc if they want to win. Some of those players from that game are back, but Sam and Donald discuss how Duke can walk out of there with a win.
We’ll be back very soon to recap tonight’s game. Go Duke!
