#229 - The 4 Essays Every Student Needs When Applying To College.
IF YOUR CHILD IS CLASS OF 2025, s/he is SEVEN months away from applying to college. KEEP reading for my invitation.
Did you know that the University of California system once required only two essays, with a 1000 word limit? In College Essay Bootcamp 1.0 (Senior Fast Track) students completed TWO essays. In 2016, the UC application offered 8 choices and students had to choose 4 essays (aka PIQs: Personal Insight Questions) at a 350 word limit each, a total of 1400 words.
College Essay Bootcamp 2.0 re-booted in 2017, the year my first book came out. I still remember offering our first essay workshop in the living room of my cousin’s home (Thank you, Luisa). The photo here is from that very workshop.

TIP: Top Academics punches your ticket to the dance. Impact Leadership gets you admitted. TALE: When you take a look at the March Madness brackets for the NCAA Men’s and Women’s tournament, you learn that they ALL have winning records. These are the AQs: Academic Qualities. They are the best in their athletic conference, be it Pac 12, Big 10, Atlantic 10, Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big East, etc. Their stats and overall winning records earned them a ticket to the “dance.” Was it a fluke that #13 seed Yale Men’s team beat #4 seed Auburn? Or that #14 seed Oakland Men’s team beat #3 seed Kentucky (with 8 National titles)? How about my Lady Trojans headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 30 years and will face the Baylor Bears who have 3 national titles under their belt? NO. These are the best teams around the country, and each comes with the “goods” of what it takes to win. So what is the difference? How a team shows leadership, endurance, and teamwork throughout the game is critical. Their preparation, work ethic, dedication, commitment, and longevity are paramount. These are the PQs, Personal Qualities of a team. TRUTH: When applying to college, every student shows up with the same “numbers,” high school GPA, test scores, and a transcript to show the rigor of the courses you chose. These “stats” are YOUR AQs. Every fall a family comes to me and wants me to review a college essay their daughter or son drafted and give feedback before it’s submitted. 99% of the time, the essay is no bueno. By “No Bueno,” I mean, please do NOT turn this in.

#209 - What In Life Is Actually Worth The Wait?
Have you ever been to a Farmer’s Market? That’s what Mom and I did on a Saturday morning in San Diego. It was HUGE! I mean, it rivaled my favorite farmers market on Sundays in Hollywood, it goes on for blocks and blocks! There we were with no choice but to walk the entire farmers market while we waited two hours to have brunch at Morning Glory. The great advantage of having time to kill meant that we stopped and tasted everything at almost every booth. We had the best nuts, tried some cool probiotic yogurt, homemade soup, and ate the sweetest and juiciest oranges.
Today’s episode is about trying new things, expanding your mind, and asking yourself the ultimate question, what in YOUR life is worth waiting for?
To date, this day remains one of my favorite days of 2024.

#208 - What To Look For On A College “Coffee Speed Date”
You might know by now that I use sports and dating as metaphors to all things college. And although I never actually went to one of those speed dating events, I remember the episode with Miranda on “Sex And The City.”
OK, I digress. If you listened to my episode two weeks ago about how I hate inefficiency, you’ll understand why I came up with a speed date exercise for my students. Bottom line is this: with nearly 3000 4-year colleges to choose from, nobody has time to spend an hour with each potential college. That could be as many as 50 - 70 colleges.
Today, I’ll not only teach you how to go from 3000 to 50 colleges, but I’ll show you the exact exercise we use to go from 50 down to 25 - 30, before ultimately cutting it down to a final 10 - 14 colleges.
Think of it this way, you first go on a speed coffee date, before going on a lunch date and finally a dinner date. Got it?

#204 - Ken Starks saved my TEDX speech! True Story.
When I interviewed my TEDX speaking coach, Ken Starks I asked him this simple question, “What is the one tip you give to all your speakers? What does every speaker need to have?”
“Authenticity.” He paused and in that pause I thought, “Well, duh.”
But then the words that fell out of his mouth floored me, “Because they don’t know where authenticity lives within them.” Mic drop.
YESSS! OMG YESS! So true.
When I set out to interview Ken I could not have imagined the numerous parallels there are in speaking and essay writing. It’s all about storytelling, finding your voice, and excavating your authenticity.

#198 - How This Mom Supplemented Public School Counseling With Private School Advice.
Have you ever “accidentally” been on the other side of the tracks? All of a sudden you realize how the “other” side lives? I was in Kansas City recruiting for Vassar and I was at the right address, but on the wrong side (I was east instead of west or vice versa). As I finally drove up to the correct address, the guard greeted me, and as I drove past the brick buildings and manicured lawn, I found my “reserved” visitor spot. How was it that just half a mile the other way was so different?
If your child attends a public or religious school, perhaps you have wondered what goes on behind that guard shack? WELL, this parent I’m interviewing today knows a thing or two about that. Her son was enrolled in one of those elite private schools, but decided he’d rather spend high school at the local public school.
As parents, you give your children what they want and need to be happy. I get it. But this mom KNEW what she would have to do to just keep up with her son’s private school peers. With that, she enrolled Matteo in public school, but had a plan of attack to still arrive at the same happy college ending her son had always dreamed of.

If you’ve ever watched The Breakfast Club, Bad Teacher, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, or Election and thought, “Yep, that was my high school,” sit tight, this episode is for you!!
I was the quintessential rah rah gal: cheerleader, student body president, dating the triple athlete who was the ASB vice president. Yep, I was THAT girl. I loved high school. HOWEVER, when I think back to all the teachers and administrators who knew me, nobody, I mean nobody, talked to me about college.
Public schools get a bad rap. I know.
And honestly, it is for good reason. Yes, they are under-resourced and under staffed. I get it. And yet, I don’t. Because if the goal is to help students get more students to apply to college, become eligible, apply to college and be admitted, this can be done. It is not an insurmountable task. Where there is a will, there is a way. And in my opinion, helping students achieve their dreams is the reward.
Today I share the lessons from my elite private school days and how Lynwood Unified implemented one strategy to yield 70 college acceptances for their seniors in just 6 days.

My time as an admission officer at Vassar College are some of the happiest days of my career. The problem was, I hated denying more students than we could admit. It was like Sophie’s choice with each applicant.
I realized I could be and wanted to be of service to more families and help build the dreams of more students. So, I set out to become a college counselor at an elite private school in Los Angeles.
It came down to two schools where I was a finalist. The interview process at each private girls school could not have been more different. As my first introduction to the private school world, the experience was eye-opening for this public school girl.

#188 How I Doubled My Teacher Salary In One Summer
Nearly every senior was applying to 3-8 top competitive colleges and Judy and I were tasked with increasing acceptance letters to top 100 colleges. The problem was each college required 2-5 essays, so the girls’ overwhelm became our overwhelm. I spent my days and nights reading and editing essays.
Judy and I realized that the school’s college success depended on the amount of guidance they received and the focused time the girls dedicated to each application.
Our offices were old dorm rooms, connected by a bathroom turned storage space. Judy and I often joked that some of our best ideas came from impromptu meetings in the “loo.”
This is the story of how essay camp was born and how we made 60 thousand dollars by working three weeks in the summer.
